The groom: *turns to his bride, attempting to coax her into continuing the wedding*

The groom: Love… I promise that will never happen again. A-and we've been together for five years—you're not going to throw all that away over one misunderstanding, right?

The bride: *looks at him, clearly disappointed*

The bride: I think you forgot… I was raised in this church, where I learned to be confident in myself and not let anyone trample on me or my principles. So, wasting five years of our relationship means nothing to me.

MC: Well, the bride has decided.

The groom: You will regret this-

MC: I would be careful with your words, child. If anything happens to this woman, I will have every nun in this church on your trail. And believe me, the women of this church are like those in the Bible—confident and merciless when angered.

The groom: ...

His family: ...

Raphael: *impressed*

Michael: *chuckles* That's right.

Simeon: Michael, do you think we can visit him?

Michael: ...

Simeon: Michael?

Michael: ...

Michael: No, we can't.

Raphael: Why not?

Michael: The prince of Devildom will take an interest in him.

SPOILERS FOR THE NEWER LESSONS IN NIGHTBRINGER - careful fellow followers of this blog <3

i love the current lessons so much actually because there is honestly so much underlying angst / potential for it! i doubt the devs will go that deeply into that direction and i don’t think it would translate well within the game anyway but just imagine mc getting more and more concerned about their own powers that also shape their relationship with everyone else… sure everyone loves mc but dia/barb and solomon have entire realms to protect and therefore wish to have mc on their side if push comes to shove (which has been a recurring topic in nb)… mc getting increasingly insecure / afraid that they’ll be seen as a tool / weapon first instead of a friend… i mean especially after being used as bait??? solomon showing his shady side again??? AAAH!!! THINK OF ALL THE POSSIBILITIES!!!

also i love that we're given the option to be mad that the people mc loves are being used as "bait" to draw out their power. obey me has been very passive about how mc responds to situations sometimes that them being mad is a great thing!!

re: angst, yeah, i get you, they haven't really hit the mark on really leaning into angst yet, and although i doubt they'll hit this one, i still have high hopes about how it's going to conclude or how they'll handle the situation (the fact that they got teleported to babel + michael's texts to simeon makes me think raphael is FINALLY going to burst and let out all the emotions he's been bottling for literal millenia)

SPEAKING OF RAPHAEL. again, i love that tlhe's the side character focus on a season with the underlying fact of simeon's transformation to a demon - his reactions and avoidance of the situation, even though he's already made aware of it by michael, coupled with the fact that he still has hidden guilt over what happened during the celestial war....... MANNNNN IM SOO EXCITED FOR RAPHAEL DEVELOPMENT AND EXPOSITION..... hopefully this means mephisto and thirteen will also have their own time in the spotlight soon regarding glimpses of their backstories and developing realtionship with the cast (and mc in particular)

ON A SIDE NOTE. anyone else catch how barb reacts after solomon and mc chooses to keep the reason for mc's growing power a secret??? yeahhhhh he defo knows. dude raised solomon and is the demon of time, of course he'd know. knowing him, he probably just wants to see how it plays out, considering he's powerful enough to mitigate any real catastrophe from actually happening (hellooo he was literally contingency plan number 1 from the sf final) love the thought of him just going. heh. this'll be fun to watch :>

Heads up, talking about Lesson 55 and the new Raphael stuff!

Sooooo. With the new lesson 55, I'm doubling down on my Sloth! sin Raphael. Him panicking about Simeon potentially becoming a demon to the point of self isolating and running away really only feels like he's trying to bury his head in the sand. Raphael already knew this was a possiblity from Michael, and still freaked out.

Raphael and Belphie are sooo similar. They hate change, and the thought of it makes them terrified. Belphie couldn't take the change of becoming a demon and losing Lilith, which led to him blaming humans just because he needed someone to blame. Raphael doesn't have anyone else in the Celestial Realm, Michael just seems to use him as an errand boy, and Simeon is his last friend from "the old days". Raphael just wants things to go back to the way it used to be, and he doesn't want to lose anyone else.

I'm excited to see where they take him, since Raphael is so clearly struggling, and has been since season 4 of the OG game.

I wanna write about the characters sins and how it relates to their characters and their relationships with MC... Already did Diavolo, but I think I want to write Raphael next, or Luke.

Luke is envy in his cards, and I think it's a good choice, but pride and greed are also there and I'm not sure which to choose... I think greed is best to parallel his relationship with Barbatos and the way he interacts with MC. He's greedy with Michael and MC's attention and actively competes with Mammon for MC's attention, and his baking is a way to get Michael to acknowledge him. His greed is less of a material wealth and more about the approval of people he admires.

For Raphael, his sin is absolutely sloth. He's so resistant to change, not lazy, but he wants his old world back. He was willing to stay in a dream he wouldn't wake up from to have the brothers back in the Celestial realm.

MC: I doubt I’ve done anything truly remarkable in the past, Mother Superior.

MC: And if I’m being honest, even as a priest, I may one day find myself at the gates of hell.

Mother Superior: *knocks his forehead with her rosary*

MC: Mother Superior!

Mother Superior: If I die and do not see you in heaven, I will curse you and your soul for all eternity.

MC: ...

MC: Yes, Mother Superior.

Raphael: Why would he say that?

Simeon: Is he uncertain about his faith?

Michael: No. What he doesn't trust is his patience.

Raphael: Patience?

Michael: You see... MC used to have a fiery temper during his teenage years. He was the type to question the morals of those around him.

Simeon: Then... how come he's a priest now?

Michael: It’s a long story, but the short version is that a seminarian told him that being a servant of God makes you superior to everyone else. He was enraged.

Raphael and Simeon: ...

Simeon: That's-

Michael: In reality, he became a priest out of spite and to gain the power to call out people’s hypocrisy.

Raphael: ...

Raphael: I want to visit this person.

The day the brothers fell, Raphael couldn't accept it. Every day after, he thought, would be the day they saw the error of their ways and begged Father to let them come back. And in His graciousness, of course he would forgive them. But the time stretched on and on, and still there was no word of them returning. There were rumors, though, of Lucifer ingratiating himself with the Demon Prince, and that was when Raphael knew something was wrong. So he did what any angel in distress was supposed to do and went to his Father.

He bowed before the throne in a room that floated between existence and nonexistence. The floor beneath him held so long as he believed it would. He spoke no words, but he was understood all the same. Father was silent for a long time, but Raphael dared not prompt him. Finally, he heard an answer. Pray. He didn't understand, but instructions from the Father rarely made sense in the moment. He thanked him and left.

Every moment he thought about the brothers, he prayed. He knelt, bowed his head, and clasped his hands like he was taught. The other angels surely noticed, but he knew they would never question someone of his rank. So he prayed until the knees of his robes were dirty. He begged for their safe return, for the demons to release their hellish claws, for their smiling faces to be seen in the heavens again.

He wasn't sure how long it had been since he started praying. It had been a long time, made longer by the endless stains on his robes and the bruises on his knees. Even his angelic patience had begun to wear thin. He finally requested another audience with the Father.

Knelt again before the throne, the light surrounding him somehow seemed brighter than before. He asked again what the Father would have him do. He received another answer, quicker than the last time. Pray.

The fault must be with him, he thought as he left the throne room. The Father could not be wrong. He must not be trying hard enough.

So he prayed whenever he was awake. Often he knelt and prayed properly, but sometimes now he was forced to only close his eyes and appeal on their behalf. He slept fitfully, waking in a sweat. Even the constant sunlight of the Celestial Realm could not rid his mind of the nightmare that if the brothers did not return, it could be his fault. Just before he fell asleep and the moment he woke up, his bleary mind sent a wordless plea to the Lord. He prayed for white robes and for seraphim with stern faces and for lost lovers.

And still, it was not enough. He was hardly aware of the time that passed in the human world, only how it would correspond to the time in the Devildom. He wondered how they were faring, if Lucifer thought his decision had been worth it. If one of them ever saw a golden spear and thought of him.

Before he knew it, he was prostrating himself in the throne room again. The light was hurting his eyes, and he swore he was sinking into the ground. His chest heaved as he gave himself up again. Tears dripped down, from the light or his own tortured mind, he couldn't tell. Again, an answer pierced his mind. Pray.

He followed the habits of his father's chosen people. The angels watched as Raphael tore his robes, took ashes from the ever-burning braziers and heaped them on his head. One of the realm's finest soldiers, reduced to weeping across soot-stained cheeks. He shambled barefoot across the cobblestone streets with only one thought in his mind. He prayed now with more tears than words, wails sent to the sky in a heart-rending hope.

Images of the brothers filled his mind still. They were happy, just like they had always been. Until the moment they weren't. Until he had seen the steel in Lucifer's eyes as the ends of his feathers started to darken. Raphael's chest tightened, so suddenly he dropped to his knees. He felt the presence of his father descending and the breath left his lungs in a moment. His hands grasped around blindly until they found a ragged piece of torn fabric from his robes, and he quickly pulled it to his face to shield his eyes from the light.

God, the light. It consumed him, it burned him, it saw everything. A hundred years passed; time stood utterly still. His veins burst and healed instantly. The crevices of his mind were laid bare in the moment.

All at once, the hold released. His lungs swelled with air and the veil slowly slid from his face. As blood from some unknown wound dripped onto his face, the angel finally understood.

Some things just couldn't be saved.
