An Oakville cemetery is once again facing calls to remove a monument that pays tribute to a Ukrainian unit that was recently thrust into the spotlight when controversy erupted over a decision to honour one of its veterans in the House of Commons. The monument in question is located within West Oak Memorial Gardens, a 100-acre cemetery at 1280 Dundas St. W. that is owned and operated by St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery. In 1988, a large statue commemorating what is known as the First Ukrainian Division of the Ukrainian National Army was erected at the burial ground, which is the largest Ukrainian cemetery in Canada. Yaroslav Hunka, the 98-year-old Ukrainian man at the centre of this controversy, served in that military unit, which was founded in 1943 and is also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division and the SS 14th Waffen Division. This unit was a Second World War Nazi German military formation made up of mostly Ukrainian volunteers and fought in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, and the former Yugoslavia. It was disbanded in 1945.

New York Central Hudson 4-6-4- No. 5276, class J-1 -d is seen accelerating C.P.R. train No. 712 one mile east of Oakville station in July 1947. These interesting locomotives were pooled with C.P.R. and Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo power for the Toronto to Buffalo runs. For many years the NYC engines supplied for this service were 4-6-2 "Pacifies" but around 1937 the more powerful 4-6-4 "Hudsons" supplemented. Both types came from the East Buffalo roundhouse power pool and almost any "Hudson" could be seen running into Toronto, even the pioneer "Hudson" No. 5200.

Control cab 252 leading an empty stock working past Oakville on Saturday, July 6th, 2013. GO recently increased service to a half-hourly service during the day. The eastbound service starts at 10am and the westbound service around noon, as a result there are a couple of westbound ECS workings that run non-stop to Aldershot.

"FRESH AIR, WORK AND PLAY USHERS HEALTH BACK FOR CONVALESCING SOLDIERS," Toronto Star. September 29, 1943. Page 8. ---- ON THEIR 22-ACRE FARM, convalescing soldiers at the Oakville Casualty retraining centre grow much of their own fruit and vegetables, as well as provide produce for Chorley Park hospital at Toronto and the military hospital at Hamilten. Pte. Bill Rad ford. Hamilton, displaying a branch of juicy grapes here, says the vineyard is a favorite wurking spot for him and his chuma,
IT'S HARVEST TIME NOW on the casualty retraining centre's hospital farm. Major LG Brayley, OC states that the farm work is one of the finest forms of exercise for the convalescing soldiers and is enjoyed by the youths, Sapper Alf Dormer, lslington, left, and Pte. Ran Pyle. Dunnville, admire some of the squash which they have tended since summer
"OFFICIAL" TEAMSTER for the centre's farm is Private Gordon Bell, Orillia, who fell heir to the teamster's job because he has spent most of his life on a farm in western Canada. Two horses, as well as plows, disks, harrows and other implements are a part of the centre's equipment. Private Bell is disking down the mid after his fellow convalescents had harvested a bumper crop of potatoes.
WORK, PLAY, EXERCISE all stop when the time comes for mail parade. And when the sergeant repeats those fateful words: "That's all this morning boys," the soldiers move off reluctantly. The Oakville Casualty Retraining Centre for soldiers past the need of hospital care is the fist of its type in Canada. Fresh air, sunshine and good food restore the health to youths recovering from operations and illness.

Turnbull Wine Cellars, Oakville (No. 7)
At the Northern boundary of the Oakville appellation and alongside our estate winery, this nearly flat, gentle Eastern slope site features bale loam clay soils. The vineyard is generous and gentle for Sauvignon Blanc grapes, with a balanced crop load and slow, even ripening period during the growing season with a longer hang time. Our Josephine and Classic Sauvignon Blancs are crafted from this site. The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit that we grow here, which makes its way into our red wine blends, showcases strawberry and red cherry notes.
