safehalton May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples. This day, also known as Red Dress Day is recognized as part of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Week of Action.

On this day, and during this week, we honour and remember all missing and murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people.

The dresses are empty, to symbolize the missing and murdered persons who should be wearing them.

Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada.

safehalton Happy Juneteenth everyone! Today we celebrate the day when the last enslaved African Americans were finally freed in Texas on June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day is a reminder of the long and difficult journey towards freedom and equality for all. It is important to recognize and honor the contributions and sacrifices of those who fought for their rights and the rights of future generations. Let us continue to educate ourselves and others about the history and significance of Juneteenth and work towards a more just and equitable society.

THIS WOMAN I KNOW, her name is Farrah.  She is a queer muslim woman, an educator, a counsellor, and an advocate on issues of gender based violence, equity and pleasure.  

Farrah works daily with survivors of sexual violence at Ryerson University.  She provides support, accompaniment, advocacy, education and referrals in this line of work and everyday she faces is different. Farrah also is a feminst mentor and “femtors” young feminist groups including We Give Consent, Project Slut and femifesto. With femifesto they researched and created Use the Right Words: Media Reporting on Sexual Violence for journalists that was launched prior to Ghomeshi trial. She believes the mainstream media can be more responsible in its representations of survivors and marginalized communities.  

Having women, specifically women of colour, in the violence against women field who believed in her voice, championed her work and opened doors for her had a profound impact on Farrah. She believes strongly in feminist mentoring, as a way to skill share and create meaningful opportunities for young women in the city. She loves learning with and from young women and what their visions are for a safer world.
