"These Old Scientists" was a gem of an episode and an instant top 10 of my all-time favourite episodes.
I also do have a few thoughts about it!!
So in the SNW era, red/maroon is usually for red shirts/security officers, notoriously known for dying faster than carnival goldfish. In the LWD era red shirts are for the command division, meaning that Pike the entire time probably thought that Mariner and Boimler were just red shirts.
Which is so funny to think about, these two capable command division ensigns getting mistaken for being in the worst career path of Starfleet at the time.
What also was quite fun was the constant making fun of Mariner and Boimler's constant casual and very specific references in their conversation. And Boimler's failings in keeping future events to himself through these references.
My favourite part however was when Boimler basically insinuated that comphet Spock was just a fad and that Spock and Chapel are doomed to fail. I love Ethan Peck and Jess Bush but I cannot stand Spock and Chapel together it just feels weird and wrong.
Mariner being obsessed with Nyota Uhura was also so valid, Uhura is so cool and one of my favourite characters I too would only care about her.
OOH- and the fact that Boimler called the Enterprise out on their xenophobia when talking about the Orions was so iconic. Defending his friends and their backgrounds/cultures is such a Boimler thing to do.
All in all- 10/10 episode. I have been waiting for this episode ever since it was first announced and this episode was the only reason I started to watch SNW. I was not disappointed!!

I really hate how SNW is ruining iconic characters like Christopher "I'll never get used to a woman on the bridge" Pike, Nyota "Captain I'm frightened" Uhura, Christine "I'm in love with you Mr Spock. That's it, that's my whole personality" Chapel and Joseph "I had five minutes of screen time because they needed a doctor and Bones was busy" M'Benga. I also hate how they made Spock date women when in ToS he is clearly gay because my headcanon says so.
#i feel a little sarcasm there#confession 992#star-trek-fandom-confessions#star trek#strange new worlds#critical confession#christopher pike#nyota uhura#christine chapel#joseph m'benga#spock

Leia Organa vs. Nyota Uhura
Remember: don't vote on "who would win in a fight", but on "who, when given a task that fits her skillset and talents, would do that task better: more comprehensively, faster, with more pizzazz, with less collateral, etc."
Endorsements! "What is she good at?"
Leia Organa, Star Wars: everything. y'all know her. but to be clear in her very first scene she lies directly to vader's face without blinking. then iconically takes charge of her own rescue missions bc luke and han are useless. then she outlives that main trio, is a force user, senator, general, and everyone loves her.
Nyota Uhura, Star Trek: Her special talents lie in communicating and translating; she speaks a lot of languages and has an intuitive understanding of speech - and music too! She is a good singer, and this ability helps her not just bring joy to her friends and crewmates but also save the day! She's an excellent leader and teacher too.

Do you have a list of star trek muses you write? :))
I thought they were in my muses list but I guess I have to update it.
James T. Kirk - fc Chris Pine until I find icons of Paul Wesley as Kirk (I don’t want TVD icons i have complex feelings towards that show)
Nyota Uhura - fc Celia Rose Gooding
Spock - fc Ethan Peck
Christopher Pike - fc Anson Mount
You have to blame @thecavclry for that.

Still hilarious how in the first Kelvin movie, literally nobody in the Enterprise crew is competent at their job until TOS cremates start rolling in all on the same day.
It starts with Sulu being in the seat because the actual pilot is on sick leave.
Then, the communication officer going "I can't tell Vulcan from Romulan" (hello, how did you ever do you job??) replaced on the spot by Nyota "I speak all three dialects" Uhura.
Meanwhile Bones get chief medical because the previous one is KIA
Following, iconic Pavel "I can do zat!" Chekov running through the whole ship to get to the beam controls because apparently the current operator can't teleport two people moving linearly.
Removing Spock from command to prevent him from making mistakes becomes an actual plot point
And Scotty is aboard for a whole of five minutes before being named chief engineer, I guess the post was just left vacant
Honestly, how did Pike ever got anything done

top 5 star trek characters go
NOW i can go insane. obviously una and spock are number one but
1. j. mia colt and josé tyler. yes, i'm putting them both in the same spot. yes, they are basically just my ocs at this point. no, i don't care :) until snw acknowledges their existence they are MINE!!!
2. christopher pike. the man, the myth, the legend. he started it all and i love him <333
3. nyota uhura. do i even need?? to explain??? she's an icon.
4. erica ortegas. my favorite thing to come out of snw. she fits all my tyler hcs so WELL that it is enough of a compromise for me to be satisfied. i also like that her name is a callback to him period :'))
5. ash tyler. this might be controversial. i literally do not care. i can go into Great Detail on how wrong the show/fandom did him.
and a bonus bc i feel i am focusing on one era of the franchise too much: janeway and data/spot (do not separate them) 💖
#me when i dont include evan like im a monster. but he is Fully my oc. fully.#NOT MY FAULT HE DIED. NOT MY FAULT AT ALL

Are there any headcanons anywhere for why Uhura is in yellow in the Corbomite Maneuver? I think she was also in yellow in another episode too?
--
Bones is so iconic for ignoring the red alert. "Finally finished your physical" - how many times has he tried to get through that and been interrupted? XD
--
Jim walking down the corridor with his towel and top slung over his shoulders! Hardly proper uniform! :P
--
We all know "it gives me emotional security" but GOD, it still hits every time! This line really gives off "recently got together" vibes...
--
Bones and Kirk's little "I never say that" "I could have sworn you did".
And Kirk's side-eye at McCoy when Rand comes in with the food, knowing he's probably the cause, and his disappointment with the salad XD ... Though it does hit a little different when you factor Tarsus in...
--
I hate this 'females are different' type talk, but also McCoy's "what the matter Jim, don't you trust yourself?" and Jim's pause... Idk just makes me think of The Enemy Within and Dagger of the Mind where he wasn't himself but did assault Rand and Noel. And especially how he and Janice both had to just carry on after that.
--
McCoy batting for Bailey even when they have 3 minutes left 😅
--
The way Kirk looks like he's going to cry after he tries his bluff and looks over to Spock to see if it's changed anything and Spock shakes his head, but says "however it was well-played" and that earns a smile from Jim ❤️❤️
--
The way they're all coming together at the end 🥰😭 Bones and Jim's "sorry". Nyota and Scotty coming behind them. Sulu continuing to count down.
--
Bones telling Spock he'd love to teach him poker! I need that fic...
--
I told myself I wouldn't comment on every little thing, but Rand's hot coffee trick! I love her!
--
Jim's lack of hesitation in going after the alien vessel to help it. I love himmmmmmm. And Spock's "Captain, request permission to-"... I kind of want to headcanons this is the episode just after they get together actually
--
I always wonder what happened to Bailey in the end. It's such a sudden ending, almost, and it's definitely a big decision to just make like that!
