A lot of us with ADHD are familiar with the concept of time blindness, but for anyone who isn't: it's a neurological inability to have a consistent sense of the passage of time. If you put me in an empty room, gave me a button and told me to press it when I think it's been 15 minutes, I might press it after..... idk, anywhere between 3 minutes and 2 hours? And if we repeated it the next day the result would probably be wildly different!
But something I've only seen mentioned in one (1) Reddit post, which took some extensive digging to find, is the same effect extending to ALL things measured in numbers. Distance, weight, length, height, amount, space, volume, percentage... For me, small numbers are a bit easier, I could approximate a centimetre probably, but a metre would be much harder and 10 or 100 would likely miss the mark by a lot. Also, anything that can't be easily measured with a ruler or a measuring tape (like weight or volume) is even harder since I don't encounter reference points (like a 1kg hand weight) for those as frequently as I see visual representations of specific lengths.
It's not dyscalculia or anything like that, I'm decent at math (and the OP of the Reddit post was a math major) and I have no other difficulties with numbers, it's just a disconnect in translating real life experiences like sensory input into numbers (and possibly also inconsistent processing of sensory input? Like how the same sound volume is okay one day but hurts my ears the next?), which I think is basically the same thing as what happens with time blindness. For now I've been calling it "measurement blindness" since I've never seen a name for it anywhere, but maybe "quantity blindness" could also work?
I've talked to other people with time blindness to see if they experience this too, but so far none of them have known what I'm talking about. I'd really like to know how many of us are out there and if anyone knows literally anything actually scientific about this very inconvenient phenomenon!
Tl;dr: bc I am wordy:
It's like time blindness but for all things measured in numbers
Not dyscalculia or caused by it
Pretty much never seen it talked about anywhere
Please tell me if it sounds familiar and/or you know something about it, thank
#adhd#time blindness#let me tell you it gets real fucking awkward every time someone asks for my estimate on anything numbers based#like 'hey kuura how far would you say the store is? like a km maybe one and a half?'#and i'm like buddy you'd get a better answer from a toddler than me#and even if i took a precisely 1km walk every day#it would feel like a different distance every fucking time#especially if the route was always different#nd things

I was talking to an idiot and I need validation.
#superman#clark kent#kal el#comics#dc comics#smallville#martha kent#jon kent#ma kent#pa kent#im gonna rant now. this isnt at you its at the dumb fuck who was commenting on my comment on tiktok.#YES! why the fuck wouldn't he be! he was ADOPTED to be adopted you gotta have the right paperwork in order. the person im mad at LITERALLY#SAID Clark was in an orphanage... lets put our thinking caps! if he was in an orphanage Ma and Pa gave him to the state and yk what! i bet#they thought he was an abandoned baby! no one knew he was an alien. if they didnt he would have been in a govt lab! and in a comic i read ma#and pa thought he was a nasa experiment! yk how they put dogs and moneys in orbit? they thought they did that with a baby! so they took him#ok ok ok then the person i was debating said ma and pa were CRIMINALS!!!!! THEY JUST SAID CLARK WAS IN AN ORPHANAGE!#SO MA AND PA FOUND A BABY. TURNED HIM OVER TO THE AUTHORITIES AND AFTER IT WAS PROVEN THAT HE HAD NO FAMILY THEY ADOPTED HIM!#all of that is legal! they made it sound like ma snuck into a house a stole a child! put some respect on the Kents!#and for why we were debating. he had to have been assigned an ID/ss number/citizen ship because he was to the govt an abandoned BABY#they made it sound like Clark was a 20 year old! he was at best a toddler. he didnt need to take a citizenship test or anything cus HE WAS A#BABY! he was just issued citizenship cus to the govt he was an abandoned baby in the usa WHERE EISE WOULD HE HAVE BEEN FROM!#cus i cant stress this enough NO ONE KNEW HE WAS AN ALIEN! (except maybe ma and pa)#the govt gave an abandoned baby in Kansas an us id cus THEY HAD NO REASON TO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE BABY FOUND IN A FEILD IN KANSAS WASN'T#BORN IN THE USA! and with all the paperwork they did on him they gave him us citizen rights like THE RIGHT TO VOTE#there are a million possibilities for why a baby would be abandoned in a feild in Kansas and it would take awhile to aliens#this is what i think the govt thought 'ok baby abandoned in a feild of a local couple. no family to be found. a young mother probably got#pregnant and didn't want to baby so she left it where a couple who couldn't have children could find them. oh look the couple wants to adopt#let them take the baby.' babys being abandoned was so common that safe haven laws were made to give mothers who didnt want their infants a#safe place to drop their kid off (usually a special box at a fire department or hospital)

The two most recent comfort characters of mine have been Smoon from the fnafsb Dadcare AU by @dad-sun-and-moon and Bandana Waddle Dee from the Kirby series (of course Kirby is beloved to me as well, but I wanted to draw Bandee here).
So here's Bandee helping Smoon deal with a pest.
#aside from these two I have a good number of other comfort characters. both my ocs and from popular media.#my first comfort character was probably Woody from Toy Story back when I was a toddler.#comfort character#fnaf sun and moon dad au#fan art#bandana waddle dee#kirby bandana dee

Omgcp characters as things my toddlers have said and done in the daycare I work at
Bitty: *wakes up from nap with his shirt halfway off, a shoe in one hand and a set of measuring cups in the other*
Jack: “Goose!!” *starts jumping up and down while giggling*
Shitty: *starts lecturing his friends unintelligibly, but it’s definitely a lecture*
Ransom: *only wants to hold hand with his bestie in the hallway, cries if he cant*
Holster: *hugs his best friend so hard, they both topple over and start crying, but they’re still hugging*
Lardo: *quietly orders her friends around while shoving fistfuls of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in her mouth*
Dex: *literally only plays with the singing tool set*
Nursey: *rolls into the classroom wearing some cool ass shades, but promptly trips over the ball he couldn’t see*
Chowder: *Happy Tappies at the thought of getting to run around with his friends*
Bonus:
Tango: *asks “why?” Anytime I ask him to do something*

So I have a ton of panels saved of Samon, for obvious reasons.
I’m pretty indifferent to Hajime but god, this panel is my favorite of him.
It’s too funny, the smoking, the walk, kenshirou calling him a yankee. It’s all *chef’s kiss*

you know what, 8 yr old me being absolutely obsessed with the sickening relationship between faramir and denethor, then going crazy over sherlock & mycroft, only to end up here, luxuriating in the cringe of all cringe - thinking all day long about the complexities of washington's relationships with lafayette vs hamilton vs laurens - makes a lot of sense. one hint of paternal-ish angst and i salivate like a dog i guess.
#that's right i am outing myself as both a lotr and a past bbc sherlock fan#why is this genuinely making me feel vulnerable lmfao#chat i am feeling the urge to cram amrev into lotr like a toddler cramming a triangle into a circle hole someone stop me#lotr#amrev#alexander hamilton#george washington#george washingdad#amrev fandom#hamilton#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#mycroft holmes#faramir#faramir is still my number one in lotr i love him so much

me: going about my business
my brain: yeah but what would those piece of shit abusers think about you right now?? what would they judge you for? what kind of flaw would they point out?? would they approve anything about you?? how about you think about THAT for the next hour???
#its like being worried what the worst people on earth might think if they saw you#like who even cares their sins outnumber yours by millions#their opinions are worse than worthless they're self serving and manipulative and controlling#not to mention biased stupid unsourced bigoted shallow and incorrect#i should be thrilled they would think low of me#and yet my brain is like 'BUT WOULD THEY LIKE ME NOW???'#of course they wouldn't#they didn't like you when you were a toddler and they wont like you until the day they die lol#we don't need to be liked by monsters#we need to stay away from them#ugh#growing up around this kind of scrutiny really does a number on the brain

the other thing cats do is actually, more frequently than you would expect, kill babies. they lay on them because they're warm, but the weight of the cat prevents the baby from inhaling and causes asphyxiation.
#i think cats actually kill more infants than dogs do#but i do not have official numbers#this is more speculation based on how people assess risk#people are just more careful around dogs when a baby is small#but dogs definitely kill more toddlers and up#anyway sorry for this not so fun fact but it seemed worth mentioning

Valuable works of art steeped in history are often hung in pride of place above a mantlepiece or on the walls of a grand entrance hall. But not so this 400-year-old hidden treasure, which spent decades out of sight, behind the door of a Surrey cottage, before being stumbled upon by an antiques expert during a house clearance of a late collector.
...
Chris Kirkham, associate director at Hansons London spotted the painting while visiting the property, which was owned by a man, who has not been named, who collected paintings as a hobby. Kirkham commented that he ‘was surprised to find such a compelling portrait hidden away.’
He explained that the painting was likely to have been influenced by the Baroque artists Van Dyck and Reubens. Bearing the name Adriaen Verkins, possibly Dutch, the painting is dated 1626, when Charles I (1600-1649) was king of England, Scotland and Ireland. He lavished money on the arts and invited artists such as Van Dyck and Rubens to work in England.
(Note on the article: The subject of the painting is said to be a girl, and the name in the corner the artist's. However, the title reads "Adrian Verkins at age 1"; the sitter is presumably a little boy named Adrian. A quick internet search shows the grave of an Adrian Verkins in the Netherlands from 1704.)
#people see a dress and go Girl Wear Dress#even though toddlers of both sexes wore dresses as recently as the 20th century#and like even if you don't read Latin that inscription isn't that hard to figure out#what artist writes their own name across the top of a painting#the item on a chain is probably a pacifier or teething toy#portraiture#art history#17th century#other articles have stuff like 'a child around two years old' like THE NUMBER ONE IS RIGHT ON THE PAINTING
