I don't know about the book, but show Hawk is such a good main character and that is because of how complex and real he is. So it annoys me when people try to act like he's not complex and they try to view him through the most dense lense possible. It's more complicated than just "he's hurt Tim so therefore he's evil and deserves nothing good." You're not supposed to watch this show and walk away with the impression that Hawk is the bad guy. Because Hawk IS NOT the bad guy. That becomes even more obvious if you have read any of the interviews from the cast/creators where they discuss Hawk's character.

Hawk is a man with layers, both good and bad, just like the rest of us and just like the rest of these characters. He's definitely not a saint and YES his tactics aren't kind and they need work, but people need to stop acting like he's not also a victim who is just trying his best to survive and protect not only himself, but the people he loves too (because yes, even if you guys don't think it looks like it, he does the stuff he does to protect others too, not just himself. But that's a post for another day).

You can criticize the WAY in which he goes about protecting himself and others and recognize that it's harsh and mean without completely disregarding WHY he even needs to protect himself to begin with and erase him being a victim too. I highly recommend you guys read some more of Matt's interviews because he has given some wonderful insight into Hawk as a character.

Everyone is the hero of their own story, and someone who seems evil to you is actually doing their best from their own perspective. If you could walk a mile in their shoes, you'd understand. There is no such thing as evil.

My understanding of evil, in my twenties: Look, it's basically just tribalism. We are all necessarily thrust into competition with one another. There are always going to be winners and losers. Whining about evil is just being upset that you lost the game.

Yes, people do need to take accountability for the partners they choose to date, at least to some extent. And no, this doesn't apply to abusive relationships, that situation is entirely different.

I'm talking about white people who date other white people who are openly racist. I'm talking about "allies" who date other people who are openly homophobic and transphobic. I'm talking about liberal women who date very conservative men. And seeing bigotry as nothing more than a "political issue."

Of course, it's different if your partner lies and actively hides their political views from you. But if your partner is openly voting for people like Trump, openly supporting conservative politicians, openly hating/harming minority groups, then you should leave them. And you should be held accountable if you to choose to stay with someone like that.
