I’m super sorry for skipping two prompts for the Stancest Summer and posting this one a few days late 🙇‍♀️ One of them is smut, which I am super shu about and still working on. The other I just got too busy to draw.

But I wanted to post this one, even if it’s past its due date because this one means alot to me.

So the final prompt for @5summersofstancest was “A Tight-Knit Family” and I dedicate this piece to @donethedevilspedicure. I have been in the Stancest Fandom for a little over 5 years. Maybe more. I’ve seen people come and go and I adored everyone that I could. But it’s a very special thing when you make a close friend in a fandom. I am very glad that I took the time to find a lost Akuroku fic for a certain someone within the Stancest server as a challenge. I never imagined we would get as close as we are now a year later.

The Stancest fandom is a fandom family I am happy to be a part of, no matter how many people I see pass by. And I am especially thankful that it helped awkward little me make a good friend. From making fanart for you, giving you a 2.0 avatar remake, you tuning into my random discord gaming streams and listening to me talk about random shit. I enjoyed it all and more. May we have more years of friendship, Devil.

And I hope other people in the fandom can make a good friend like I have. Here’s to our Grunkles! Until next Summer!

talking to a friend about getting back into art and i think the #1 most important piece of art advice i could ever get or give is just "figure out what is FUN to you"

like i think there is sooooo much emphasis on how to build SKILL in art but a lot of it really treats art like a job or like video game grinding, like it's this thankless job that you have to work at in order to reach a Threshold and i know it's not EASY to make yourself have fun but like

imo a solid 70% of the reason i create art is because the Act of Drawing is fun to me. it's fun problem-solving and planning and putting down lines and playing with colors and tools. it's fun to depict little scenes in my head or to create outfits or to find ways to fill the canvas. never forget that creating can be fun. sometimes it's hard and sometimes you have to battle through your own blockades to get there but the ultimate goal should always be to ENJOY it, to find what you enjoy doing and then do it forever. improvement will follow enjoyment.

i think especially with all the debate about ML image generation it's more important than ever to embrace FUN. if you're only focused on the end result it's so easy to get in your own head- to think about what doesn't look good or what skills you don't have yet or to compare yourself to other artists. but photography didn't kill the art of drawing and AI won't either because, simply put, there will always be people who want to do the physical act of making art because it's fun to do! using paints and markers, splashing colors around, doing shitty pen doodles, using the symmetry tool in your art program to do abstract mandalas that are just squiggles formed into patterns. do art like you're 5 and you've been handed markers to pass the time. do art like you're bored in class and you're keeping your brain entertained by drawing stick figure comics in the margins. do art like an absent thing, do art because it satisfies your brain. the goal is not to make something beautiful and perfect, the goal is to make something because your hands need to make and your body needs to make.

#i know and love so many people who have intense anxiety about their ability to create art and who are so hard on themselves about the result #and i think that's a REALLY easy thing to feel because creating is also vulnerable & physically difficult and there is SOOOO much to master #but i think for me the people who churn out 300 colored pencil front facing hands behind their backs oc doodles on lined notebook paper-#are the ones with the right idea. they're the ones i aspire to be like #i'm not saying i never struggle either bc tbh #as someone with depression and adhd there are times where the Act of Having Fun is simply not possible #sometimes i CAN'T enjoy things because my ability to feel joy is locked behind a barrier of my mental illness #so i don't think it's an Easy thing to do by far and I don't think you can just Magically Make Yourself Happy And Having Fun #but i DO think that experimenting in a low-stakes low-pressure manner until you find something that clicks in your brain helps #doing things for the sake of doing them is the only way to figure out which ones WILL be fun to you #not all of them will. some things will feel like a slog #but i think you have to look for the passion before you're able to face the slog #if you jump right into the parts that are Hard and Challenge Your Limits it's easy to spin your wheels and get stuck #but if you focus on the super small stakes and the things that are thoughtless and focused more on Sensation-#the sensory experience of mixing paint or the scratch of pencil on paper or the smooth way a specific pen makes lines-#then you can lose yourself in the physical aspect of it FIRST #and then once you've started really ENJOYING those sensations you can start learning new ways to use them #because now you have the drive to want to do more #now you have the desire to find new ways to apply this thing you like doing #long post #even longer tags #art #drawing #artists #art advice

#this is less contrived than it looks-- I only pulled the pencil bag out and re-adjusted the sketchbooks slightly #throwing the old (brown) sketchbook down on top of the new one next to my bag just made me go 'oohhhohooh!!!' lmao #IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER #anyway I'm at the end of the current sketchbook so I'm gonna give an old favorite a go #handbook travelogue used to be my go-to but then we moved away from the local store that sold them #and they were a little more expensive to order online so I haven't had one in like... five years?#NOW I'm curious to see how I'm gonna feel because I KNOW I like this sketchbook obviously #but also I've gotten really used to the soft cover and cheap paper (gluing misc stuff in there; taking pages out if I need to make space)#and the wrap-around cover (not the tie which is tbh annoying but the flap which I usually have a pen clipped to...)#WE'LL SEE. I've definitely missed having better paper #and I'm hoping something a little easier to quickly deploy without flaps and cords just kind of in the way will make me use it more #of course if I could find LOOSE!! paper that I actually LIKED maybe I could make my own that covers ALL my desires BUT ALAS #about me

#my art #artists on tumblr #the legend of korra #original characters #I have not figured out a tag system yet so for now this is all they’re getting #their names are liba and abyan and I’m very much obsessed :)#they’re the children of two of our other newest OCs. Himman and Summiya #the latter of whom just happens to be Zaheer’s older sister #but he ran away from home years before these two were born so he most likely isn’t even aware of their existence #I mean. I’m sure he suspects his sisters had children. but that’s the extent of what he knows #anyway #quite a few headcanons came to mind as I was drawing so I’m gonna type them out while I can still function #(haven’t slept for two nights in a row. I’m starting to doubt whether I’m actually alive or not)#Liba is older by about a year but once they grow up a little it’s barely noticeable and people assume they’re twins #over time they stop bothering to correct them because really. they’re so close they might as well be #they were both burn with port wine stain birthmarks on their faces. much to their mother’s dismay #she has a whole perfectionism complex and needed her children to reflect that to maintain the family image #thus they were taught how to hide the marks early on. but the powder makes them constantly sneeze #liba is very self conscious about it bc of what her mother put in her head. Abyan less so bc while he’s expected to be perfect #his future doesn’t depend on his looks. he always tries to comfort his sister whenever she spirals too deep. no matter that she’s older #when no one is around to hear he calls her Lili <3 it annoyed her at first so she dubbed him Yanyan in retaliation #but over time they both grew to love the nicknames and now use them unironically #they’re the ultimate partners in crime. their goal? gaining as much freedom from their mother as possible #and sooner or later they will manage to do so permanently. which will make Summiya fall apart. but that is currently Kat’s domain #speaking of. hi Kat. I know you’ve already seen this in pencil but look! I coloured them!!#the birthmarks were both kinda annoying and rather fun to do. maybe I’ll change them later. I was too tired to look at refs so I improvised #and there’s no detail in clothing since again. 0 energy whatsoever. but once I refine their full body designs I shall go all out #that reminds me I need to go collect my new sketchbook. might do it on the way home from the store #okay I’m getting distracted. is this my very unsubtle way of trying to influence Kat to write that Summiya fic?#maybe. maybe not. you can’t prove anything 😁

Decided I want to learn to draw trains so I downloaded a free drawing app and a picture of a train so I could trace it and get used to the motions and shapes :)

so I've been saving up for a while to get myself this art kit for my bday present to myself, it's not huge but yeah anyway it came in stock so I bought it!!

it's multimedia and an artist teaches you through a workbook how they use the mediums together. ive started it, it's weird cause I'm pretty staunchly self taught, I never look up tutorials ever so I feel weird reading about how something works lol (even tho the tutorial part is barely a tute, it's mostly guiding you through messing around with the materials and how they work together)

anyway. point of this is im being tricked into using watercolour, my biggest fear in art, and it's going okay! I feel nervous with it though. esp since I'm still trying to just figure it out myself and the booklet doesn't teach you how to actually use it, so I'm playing it by ear. but part of why I avoided it was bc it seemed like a medium very resistant to like, just fucking around until you get something that works. but whatever. I'm gonna fuck around! and I'm having fun with it!

A character reference sheet sort of thing for the main character of the Poll Adventures, drawn more in my usual style (taking a picture of messy pencil sketches then coloring it digitally lol) rather than the cutesy ms paint style of the daily poll images .. there he is.. the adventure boy..

I forget how much I dislike coloring lol #I think if I did Neat Digital Art Lines that you can color in with the fill bucket tool it would be different but #since I can only really draw on phyiscal paper with a pencil and then just put that on the computer the lines are all too #messy for that to work. So I basically have to color it all coloring book style which is tedious #Honeslty I really like... physical art. like sculptures. and I like pencil and pen sketching . But I really dont like #most digital art at all. The exception is in MS paint for some reason. I think because I can use the bucket fill tool lol #and the pixelly lines give it some texture still. My main problem with digitial art lines is that they don't look like pencil on paper they #'re too “clean” like no scratchy messy texture looking stuff. Which I know you can use different brushes. I've tried. it just doesnt #have the same feel to it. ANYWAY.. Definitely need to practice more hjbjhb.. my anatomy and drawing fabrics and stuff #has gotten much more wonky than it used to be I think. but I've just been focusing so much more on writing #than drawing. Or only drawing the occasional sketch that goes along with writing (like worldbuilding stuff)#aside from Ms paint stuff I probably haven't really DRAWN like a full body sketch or face #or anything like that in maybe a year or more. yoink #OH ALSO i know his boots are different now because the poll voted to give him new boots ghjhbjb #I drew this before then. I actually thought more people would vote for the coat ToT #I wanted to draw him in a cool robe or something and have that be an addition to his outfit #instead just the shoes change. which aren't even visible in all drawings :(#A little purple outer coat. his favorite color. But alas.#And yeah the string that laces up his main tunic coat thing is technically like a tan yellowy sort of color but I usually #just draw it as black because it's easiest. especially with ms paint and doing really thin lines #also his hair is a little ridiculous and doesn't translate well from chibi type image to realistic but I tried gh.. the bangs lol...
