Listen my fellow gremlins: Disclosure I am not autistic but on the few occasions someone has pointed out that forsaken puzzle piece I’ve had to explain [insert schpiel I can replace with ~the whole shebang~]. Not from my own perspective but amplifying other voices from the autistic community. I’ve seen essays and articles but quite frankly next time I’m just holding up a screenshot of this post.

The below is how I’ve addressed confrontations or discussions on this issue as A NON-AUTISTIC PERSON!! I’m 10000% open to criticism on how to better handle this if I even should, but I’m sharing what has worked best for me so far:

From my very little experience, but experienced nonetheless, a lot of people IGNORE how harmful the puzzle piece symbol is partially because of this creepy infantilization of autism (typically older generations like Gen X and Boomers).

The thought processes I’ve had to address and how to prepare:

“How can it be that bad it’s just a puzzle piece?” (they think children’s game — however illogical they can’t get over the not-a-threat vibe for some reason) : literally use the phrases “missing a piece” and “implying that someone is not a whole human” and “a frankly creepy and weird mindset.” With most people it stops here and they’re a firm ally against autism speaks.

“Autistic people can’t speak for themselves” (which goes back to ableism and sometimes the infantilization creating this illogical circle you have to break): if this is a non-malicious-ignorance issue, receipts are always good or a basic polite reminder that autism does not make you incapable of having and being able to voice your needs, exercise your rights, or self advocate (beyond the struggle of dealing with prejudiced people). literally show them resources or even well-known people if you have to if you are at the this-individual-is-dehumanizing-a-whole-demographic stage. Eternal patience be upon you 🙏

“This is just a new ‘woke agenda’.”They think you’re trying to pick a fight and them feeling personally attacked (even though they definitely are not being attacked 😑) shuts them down from listening. This one is really tricky and generally I would not talk to these kind of people unless you have to…or you may just be looking for a thrill idk. This may sound bad but honestly?? Go for the helping your fellow neighbor route. Vocabulary/diction is king here. Keep in mind that this should have the tone that you are in their side! You are helping them and have their best interest in mind (even though you might want to punch them in the face by this point 😩). Staying calm, constantly keeping track of your facial expressions, appearing open, and seeming invested in helping them are key. AGAIN: this is both difficult and an unhealthy situation so I would NEVER recommend getting into it with these types of people. But firsthand I know that sometimes there is no choice (not for educating in autism speaks but everyone has a family, y’all feel me?)

They cannot fathom that the desire to burn autism speaks to the ground change a harmful stereotype and proclaim that yes, people with autism are self-aware and are in fact humans who have the right to be treated with basic human dignity, is coming directly from autistic people. Like they are the ones writing articles, making posts, and telling their peers about it. Imagine that. This being said these people are often ignorant but not maliciously so and tend to be far more open. Receipts. Show them examples they are everywhere. You can probably look up “autism speaks” on any social media platform for a multitude of brief, enraged, and intelligent examples.

ngl I thought the puzzle piece as an autistic symbol meant like. I am a vital puzzle piece to your society. humans would never have invented half the things they did without us. you're telling me it means I'm missing something?? buddy. listen. listen to me reeeeaal closely. no human has all the pieces to humanity. no one. no one has all the features enables no one has all the strengths weaknesses or quirks. no one has a whole puzzle. we make the freaking complete picture together. that's the freaking point.

It saddens me that Helen of SPARTA is mostly known as Helen of TROY. As if she wasn't born, raised, and most likely, died in Sparta. Yes, she was of TROY for a while...But she was able to go back home to where she WANTED TO BE.

Ambessa when it comes to Maddy: she does bring her up to Caitlyn but quickly drops it because although she's noticed Maddy around, she's also noticed that she isn't quite that distracting and is therefore not a threat.

Ambessa when it comes to Vi, who she's never met, yet somehow already knows that Caitlyn is in love with and sees her as an immediate threat that needs to be eliminated asap because Vi is the real distraction for Caitlyn.

My POINT IS... EVERYONE knows Caitlyn is in love with Vi.

Caitlyn doesn't even try to hide it. She made "a scene". I mean come on, you're telling me Maddy didn't figure it out here? And if Maddie knows, then every enforcer knows basically, every council member knew... everyone KNOWS

It's annoying how many Glinda fans, specifically a certain type, act condescending towards people criticizing Glinda's actions and her as a character, calling her out for how she operates in a way that benefits her by saying "Oh, these people don't know anything, they haven't seen Act II or read the books." But when they are told that both forms of media have been seen, they still get in their feelings, especially towards black and other poc fans who, when discussing Glinda, talk about how she feels very reflective of white feminism, respectability politics and performance activism (which she is), something that they know probably what it's like to be around people like that from personal experience. Just because you like a character, especially one who does bad things, doesn't mean you get to be rude to others or downplay their intelligence when they call these actions out. Glinda is often infantilized a lot in this fandom, from what I've gathered, even though (speaking from a movie standpoint) she literally sings about how she understands the way her society works and how she uses those rules to her advantage. There are many things that Glinda does that are fake and catty, and there's nothing wrong with calling that out. Also, another thing, yes some people haven't seen the musical (in person or in full) whether it not being available or just lack of interest, but there are ways to still learn about Act II before the second half of the movie comes out, whether through a quick Google search or just watching bootleg recordings of the musical on YouTube, people can learn, but you acting pretentious and downright hostile probably makes them want to avoid this fandom as a whole. Then you wonder why no one wants to engage with Wicked. You can like her as a character, all good and well as even I can find myself drawn to her, but let's not let your enjoyment of her cloud your judgment and having you lash out at people, because that's really uncalled for.

"they were literally foreshadowing her death the entire season" let me introduce you to the concept of a red herring. she tells lilly she isnt lee and shes right. the narrative was forcing her down that path, a path she saw as an inevitable fate waiting to take her too, but its a narrative broken by aj, who is also his own person and not S1 clem

"it happened to lee, and itll happen to you" lilly tells clem she'll die protecting aj from some mistake he makes, when in reality his defiance of her will is what saves her life after she had already accepted her fate. he breaks clem free from the lee cycle and they get their relatively happy ending. good for them

in s3ep2, eleanor tells mrs. hudson she doesnt come from privilege, which mrs. hudson immediately denies. but i think its SOOO telling of eleanor's character! she sees herself as a woman in a world full of men, which she is, but she completely ignores the class and racial divides she obviously benefits from. she claims she has no privilege to mrs. hudson, who comes from no money and works as a chambermaid to woodes rodgers, leaving behind her beloved children to make sure eleanor has clean clothes and to empty her chamberpot. eleanor had power on nassau, power she wielded for her own benefit and to the severe detriment of others. obviously she experienced misogyny, but she was never forced into poverty, never forced into sex work, never forced into service of any kind, because her father was wealthy and she was born into a higher class. her experiences of misogyny and oppression are vastly different than mrs. hudson's. but for her to tell a chambermaid she experienced no privilege? it's laughably untrue. eleanor oversaw and directly profitted from the trade of hundreds if not thousands of slaves on nassau, was raised by "chattel property of the guthrie estate" mr. scott, who is never even given a name in his own tongue (on screen, at least), never showed kindness to anyone but those who put money in her pocket because she was born with that money and that trade empire already in the guthrie name. she had to fight to get it, and fight she did, but the fact that those things were so close to her reach just by virtue of the circumstances of her birth? that's privilege, whether or not she sees it that way
