Bird in the Hand

When Ollie shows up at Roy’s doorstep on a cold January morning, a duffel bag in one hand and a hangdog expression on his face, Roy isn’t surprised. It’s not unusual for Ollie to drop off the grid for a month or two only to reappear with a suitcase of gaudy souvenirs and a long, rambling story that might or might not be entirely true. Sometimes a new scar or two. It’s just what Ollie does, what he’s always done. (The difference is that Roy used to go with him.) Roy lets him in, because of course he does. It’s Ollie on his doorstep. (He tries to ignore that smug little voice in his head that says, see, if I hold out long enough, he comes to me.) He’s expecting the useless keychain and the ugly Metropolis-themed shirt, the blustery concern about how well Roy’s leg is healing, the improbable story about brain-sucking aliens. What he doesn’t expect is for Ollie to pass him a tattered letter in a well-worn envelope. The furtive, wounded look that Ollie gives him when he says, “Speedy, I need your help.” He doesn’t expect to learn that Ollie has a son.

Not exactly a summary, but it's what I imagine I'd post as the summary. It's a things-go-slightly-differently AU, where Ollie gets some letter telling him about Connor (I can't decide which continuity to go with in terms of whether or not he already knows), and goes straight to Roy's doorstep. Set sometime in the year after Snowbirds (probably a bit after GL #100, in which Roy breaks his leg), because there are not nearly enough comics exploring Roy and Ollie's relationship during this period.

Ollie sees it as a family road trip, an excuse to spend time with Roy (to make things right with him), but he's also grappling with Connor's existence and coming to (belated) terms with his own fatherhood. Roy sees it as a quest for his own replacement, the son who will fill the holes Roy could never fill. Neither of them say what they really mean.

And then road trip shenanigans. And lots of feelings.

so on the subject of the "Crowley is secretly Revaan/Laverne/Levin/please Twst give us his name" theory, I think my feelings are best summed up as "I don't really buy it, but it's funny". like, in all seriousness, I'm not opposed to it; I have enjoyed the writing in Twst so far and I'm willing to trust that whatever happens will, you know, make sense and not be terrible. but I'm just not really convinced by the current evidence! maybe that'll change once we learn more, we'll see!

with that said, may I propose a few alternate theories about the possible Crowley/Revaan connection:

New AU idea:

Sirius and Regulus are the new kids in school (Muggle AU) and no one knows anything about their past but there are rumours that Sirius has full custody of Regulus and that they live alone - the rumours vary between "they live in a cardboard box" and "they have a whole batchelor pad mansion" type place.

Then, there's Remus who doesn't have any friends and doesn't really want them. He sort of talks to James because they were childhood friends but drifted apart in highschool, sometimes James will ask him to go to parties with him (because James wishes they were closer friends again) and Remus always agrees because he feels he owes it to James because he thinks the reason they drifted was his fault. So whenever he goes to these parties, he always reads a book in the corner and just doesn't interact with anyone ever.

Meanwhile, James always goes with Peter and he tries to talk to Remus but he has a feeling Remus doesn't really like him anymore and he's really insecure about it. He just assumes the reason they drifted apart was because he was too loud for Remus. So, he spends most of the parties they go to with Peter getting drunk.

But then. One day, the Black Brothers show up at a party and everyone is so interested to see if they can get anything out of them whilst they're drunk because they're so mysterious. However, what they don't know is that when Regulus and Sirius get drunk, they don't just spew their secrets to the whole world, they dance. So. They end up dancing on the table together (and look really sexy whilst doing it). And James walks into the room and his eyes land on Regulus and that's it. He has to find out more about this mysterious guy, he just has to know his favourite colour and his favourite songs, his hobbies and his least favourite food. Regulus meets his eye too and just thinks "bet", because he knows he's sexy and he knows he can pull that.

Then, there's Remus who is just trying to read his book in peace, but then there's this loud guy dancing on the table, stomping his army boots and belting Queen lyrics so loud he thinks his eardrums will burst. So, he slams his book shut, looks up, and he sees Sirius and realises Sirius is already watching him, Sirius was just trying to get his attention because whilst everyone else in the room was already looking at him, the quiet boy in the corner was too busy staring at a book. Remus doesn't like Sirius, he thinks he's hot, but he hates the way he saunters through the school halls as if he owns the place. He hates that Sirius can speak to James at school so easily even though they barely know each other and Remus has known James for years. But at the same time, Sirius has a room full of people to look at, and he's looking at Remus. People don't usually notice Remus, so he's intrigued.

Sirius, on the other hand, finds Remus just as mysterious as Remus finds Sirius. He wants to know all about this boy who comes to parties only to sit in the corner all night and not talk to anyone. He wants to know all about the boy who sits in front of him in history and dutifully scribbles down all the notes. He wants to know all about the boy who always seems to be angry at him, even though they've never spoken before.

Edit: Soooooo I'm writing it.. but don't expect it until at least next year 🙃

it isn't a secret that tsukishima kei struggles with intimacy. in all of his relationships, he likes to take it slow. if it's too fast for his liking, he'd pull the brakes immediately. he's scared, he's uncomfortable, he hates it. that's probably why none of them work out in the end.

then tsukishima meets you, and for once everything becomes so natural. his hand may be sweaty, but it fits perfectly with yours. his heart may be racing, but he feels at home with your arms around him. his mind may blank out, but he knows that he could spend all his waking hours having your lips on his. it's foreign, but it's welcomed.

he was only supposed to walk you back home after your date and yet, tsukishima finds himself caught in a heated kiss with you at your door. he's wanting to be closer to you, and even though he's literally pressing up against you, it's not enough. you've gotten him so whipped for you and he doesn't even know how.

"um, would you like to... come in?" you ask when you pull away, your cheeks a gorgeous shade of red. his instincts are yelling at him again to come up with an excuse, run and never contact you again, reasoning with him that he isn't ready. maybe he isn't. however, this time he silences all the noise in his head, because one thing's for sure: he wants you.

kei doesn't believe in soulmates. it's an absurd idea, and he can't wrap his head around it. despite that though, when your clothes lay on the floor and you're coming undone together, he thinks that maybe, just maybe, this was exactly meant to be from the start.
