I was thinking about the themes of One Piece, and what differentiated out characters we see as good versus bad, especially in a work that takes a really accepting view of different moral standpoints and values (Coby and SWORDS's justice is very different from Sabo and the RA's justice but they are both presented as good guys we'd want to root for).

So like, why do we root for Luffy following his dream to be Pirate King, but not Teach?

What about hating Crocodile who wanted to create an ideal society free of the WG but not the RA who want something similar for whole the world?

Big Mom who wants to create a place where all sentient are equal and get along versus Koala and/or Otohime who dream of that same thing for humans and fishmen?

I mean the obvious answer is that protagonists and their allies tend to be likeable - they are usually drawn prettier, have less kick the dog moments, and we get more time with them as an audience. They have to be on some level, or no one would read the manga.

But from an in-story perspective, I think its a an under looked facet of Luffy's character, for him chasing his dream is more important than obtaining it. It's why he turns down Rayleigh straight up offering to tell him where Laugh Tale is, and what is on it. What is important to Luffy isn't so much becoming Pirate King, it is being free, having fun, sailing with his friends on the journey to be Pirate King.

It's why he helps Vivi in Alabasta, Cricket in Skypiea, Shirahoshi in Fishmen Island, and the Wano crew in uhh Wano (the journey wouldn't be fun if he'd abandoned his friends to do it)

It's why he takes dangerous detours to places like Little Garden or Sky Island or Punk Hazard(the journey wouldn't be fun if he didn't get to explore)

It's why he risks his life against Arlong for Nami and declares the entire world his enemy for Robin and literally threatens to starve to death to get Sanji back ( the journey wouldn't be fun if he can't do it with his crew by his side)

All of this is why, Luffy isn't afraid of dying either. He can die at any point on his journey to being Pirate King, and feel no regret because the journey itself was the important part.

Compare this to two other D.'s Law and Blackbeard.

Law's also relentlessly pursuing his dream when we meet him (stop Doflamingo to avenge Cora), and he is miserable.

Law in trying to achieve his dream whatever the cost keeps putting himself in situations he hates.

He leaves his beloved crew behind because the mission is basically a suicide run. He cozies up to the Government he hates and hands his heart over to a morally bankrupt mad scientist he's obviously disgusted by. He plans to get Doflamingo in trouble with Kaido, which mean 1) he likely won't get to punch out Mingo himself, 2) there is a high probability of civilians getting caught in the crossfire/dying horribly.

This journey sucks. If Law had died during any point of this he would have been the world's most pissed off ghost.

It's Luffy and the Strawhats busting in and transforming that journey that puts Law on the path to success with his dream and with not being so goddamn miserable.

Like screw Caesar, let;s have Luffy kick his ass and then you fix the children he was experimenting on. Screw playing nice with the government, do what you want and call us your allies instead. Screw Doflamingo, you and Luffy go beat him up and the rest of us will pull his government/crime family down around his ears.

And it works! Law's grumpy and annoyed and cursing Luffy out, but he tells Mingo he believes Luffy can pull out a miracle and looks more at peace watching Doflamingo and Luffy brawl - knowing that he'll die or succeed with his ally/friend - than he ever did with his fool-proof plan.

The journey before destination thing is also why Blackbeard feels like a special type of evil in OP despite there being technically worse/more evil villains, because Blackbeard always prioritizes his dream over how he gets it.

He'll stay in the shadows for 20 years to increase his chances of success (wouldn't it have been more fun to be a captain like he obviously wants?)

He'll kill his crewmate, turn his commander in for a reward, then kill his captain (wouldn't it have been more fun to stay friends, he never indicates he hates/dislikes them?)

He invites strong people - and strong seems to be the only criteria - to join his crew, though tbh their personalities often suck. I don't recall any panel of his crew just hanging out or joking around which even Baroque Works, Buggy's crew, and Kaido's Beast Pirates get (wouldn't it have been more fun to recruit people he can befriend, not just people he can use)

Like obviously Blackbeard feels like the antithesis of Luffy - even though they are both all about chasing their dreams. Luffy's all about the chasing, and Blackbeard only cares about the results.

This is my first time writing Zoro, I tried my best to capture his character but he is not the romantic type haha.

After returning from Whole Cake Island after saving Sanji, you worked as a geisha woman in disguise with Robin in Wano. "I believe Zoro wishes to see you again," Robin said with a smile. You felt the skin on your cheek burn. "W-We have to focus on taking Kaido down…I—" you stopped yourself, knowing that arguing with someone as intellectual as Robin would be a waste of time. "I'll cover up for you, just go and greet him. Besides, he might have collected some valuable information on our customers."

"When you put it like that, I'll go." You say, sneaking out of the house. You feel your stomach growl and decide to take a quick trip to Sanji's new food stand. On your way, you freeze as you hear Zoro talking to Sanji. "Don't you want to see Y/n-swan? She looked gorgeous in her geisha outfit." Sanji drooled. Zoro turned around, blushing, feeling a bit embarrassed. Sanji noticed Zoro's blushing and asked him again if he didn't want to see you. Zoro hesitated for a moment before saying no. You overhear this conversation and feel your heart break into a million pieces. You had been so excited to see Zoro, but now it seemed he didn't want to see you.

Sanji looked at him with confusion. "Why not? I thought you liked her," he said. "I do like her, but I don't want to put her in danger," Zoro explained. "I'm not strong enough to protect her yet. I need to get stronger first." Sanji nodded, understanding Zoro's concerns. "I see what you mean," he said. "But you know, Y/n-Swan is a strong person, too. Maybe you could talk to her about it and see what she thinks." Zoro thought about it for a moment, but he wasn't sure if he was ready to talk to you about his feelings. He knew that you deserved someone strong by your side, but he didn't want to lead you on or hurt you in any way.

He knew that he had to become stronger so that he could protect you and be with you, as the crew had many enemies. He would train harder than ever to become the world's strongest swordsman. He knew it would be a long journey, but he was willing to do whatever it took. The scar on your leg from defending him against Mihawk after their first battle still haunts him.

You quietly walked away, tears streaming down your face. You had been so excited to see Zoro, but now it seemed he didn't want to see you. You didn't hear Zoro's confession to Sanji about his feelings for you, as you had already left.

After your Captain's victory over Kaido, Wano hosted a big banquet party to celebrate their new freedom. You sat next to Nami, confiding in her. Nami listened patiently, his eyes wide with empathy. "Don't worry, Y/n. That idiot loves you. He just doesn't know how to show it sometimes." You smile as you find comfort in Nami's words. You feel a tap on your shoulder and turn around to see Mr. Kuyama standing there. He was one of your clients during your undercover job as a geisha woman.

He looked at you with admiration and said, "Y/n-chan, you are the most beautiful geisha I have ever seen. I would be honoured if you would consider marrying me." You felt flattered but didn't know how to respond. Nami stared at you in disbelief; there was no way you were going to leave the crew for a marriage. However, if you marry him, you'll be the richest woman in Wano. Nami drooled over the thought of the money your kind heart would gift her. Before she could say anything, Zoro noticed the man's advances and felt a burning sensation in his chest. His grip tightened around his sake bottle as he struggled to contain his rage.He couldn't bear the thought of you being with anyone else but him. Feeling the tension, Luffy stretched his arm, dragged you to him, and stuffed your mount with meat, hoping to help Zoro by observing the situation from a distance. The Captain facepalm himself when he sees Zoro walking up to Kuyama, grabbing his shirt. "Hey, back off. She is not available for marriage." He said between his teeth. "M-My a-apologies Zoro-San", the poor man managed to stutter out before running away. You could swear that he wetted himself a bit.

Zoro turns around and sees your disapproved face, he could tell he messed up. He left in embarrassment, knowing that you'd confront him anytime soon. It'd be better for the two of you to talk in private. You left Luffy's side to follow Zoro, knowing he'd probably want to choose the meeting spot.

You spotted Zoro standing alone outside, staring at the stars. With hesitant yet determined footsteps, you approached him, letting out a heavy sigh. "Zoro," you started, gently yet firm. "Zoro, what happened earlier?"

He turned to face you, his expression guarded as he pretended not to know what you were talking about. "Nothing," he replied sharply, his tone short. Your frustration grew as he dodged her question. "Zoro, please," you urged, her voice tinged with urgency. "I saw how you reacted. Please tell me what's bothering you."

"I just couldn't bear to see you… with him," he mumbled. "Huh?" you said in confusion. "I just couldn't bear to see you with him, okay!" His honest admission softened your heart. You closed the distance between you and gently touched his arm, offering him silent comfort.

"I see, I didn't know as I thought you didn't want to see me." Zoro is now the confused one. "What are you talking about?"

"I overheard you talking to Sanji about not wanting to see me," you mutter, looking down. He gently lifts your chin to look you in the eyes. "It's not that I don't want to see you. Hell, I would rather spend time with you than training. I just wish I was strong enough to protect you. I don't want anyone else to take you away from me." You smiled, feeling a sense of ease by his confession. "You don't have to protect me, Zoro. Just love me."

With those words, Zoro pulled you into his arms and gently kissed you. The rest of the world melted away as you lost yourselves in the moment.

As you pulled away from each other, Zoro looked at you with a newfound sense of confidence. "I'll always protect you, Y/n. No matter what." Since that day, the two of you have been inseparable.

Now that I've been thinking about Kusuke more, I think I can better articulate what makes Kusuke different from Makoto.

My latest understanding is that while Makoto doesn't think he's doing anything wrong and wants to escalate his involvement with his sister, there's a lot of evidence that Kusuke is actually trying to END his weird fascination with his brother and shift to a normal sibling relationship.

To support this theory, I'm gonna roughly describe Kusuke's appearances / timeline and what I think his motivations were.

Obviously this all starts when Kusuo is born. Pretty normal sibling rivalry for a while, though it escalates as they both get older and stronger and their parents don't stop them.

Kusuke creates the limiters. One limiter was supposed to stop Saiki's powers while inserted, and the other one was to keep Kusuo hostage for their games. I believe Kusuke thought that by suppressing Kusuo's powers, he could establish the "proper" hierarchy of older brother beating younger brother. But it wouldn't be a complete win for him without beating Saiki at full power, so the second limiter ensures Saiki will still compete with him. Kusuke's trying to get better at games and fighting, so he's thinking that if he can beat Kusuo with the limiter in, then he just has to train until he can beat Kusuo with the limiter out.

Up till this point, there's no evidence that there was any sexual component going on. And conveniently, right as he would be hitting puberty, Kusuke high-tailed it to Cambridge. At this time he still thought that by working with other scientists, they could figure out how to completely remove Kusuo's powers.

After that, Kusuke doesn't make an appearance until Kusuo goes to him about the broken limiter. He's left cameras all over the Saiki house which is bizarre and wrong, but to be slightly fair to him, he grew up without any privacy due to Telepathy, so it kinda makes sense. And technically if something went wrong with Kusuo, Kusuke is the only person who could help, so it would make sense that he should keep an eye on things. Still fucked, but he's not exactly an ethical guy overall.

Once Kusuo needs his help, Kusuke tests to see if he can finally beat Kusuo conclusively. He hasn't done this since he left Japan, and it's actually entirely possible that this is the first time that he ever reacted like that to a loss. Still, despite apparently having the best time of his life, he's annoyed enough by the next morning to bully Nendo and Kaido for no reason. Perhaps he realized that his excitement was messed up??

After this, Kusuke doesn't show up again for a while, except to warn Kusuo and their parents that there was a defective part in the limiter. The fact that Kusuo accidentally screwed up the past and met the WWIII AU Dr. Kusuke isn't technically Kusuke's fault and was definitely not his intention.

Almost every single Kusuke appearance after this point is directly related to The Final Game, in which Kusuke will defeat Kusuo in a super epic battle and then cement his dominance forever (and destroy the rivalry / humiliation kink potential) by slam-dunking the power deleter into Kusuo's brain.

Kusuke's next appearance is scamming his grandpa. Not very nice, but I think he was actually testing how much his grandpa loves him before moving in with his grandparents and launching his "elderly robot gang" plan of attack on Kusuo. Notice that his grandmother, who Kusuke likes better and brings gifts for, doesn't get put in a robot suit later on, she gets eternal youth like she wanted (well, at least Kusuke's best shot at it). But Grandpa was definitely going to be used against Kusuo as a hostage and to Kusuke it's justified because his Grandpa doesn't love him.

The elderly robot gang plan is revealed and fails, so Kusuke has to think of some other way to defeat Kusuo in a super cool matter.

In the next new year's chapter, both Kusuke and Teruhashi show up at the Saiki household. It's not clear why Kusuke showed up (perhaps he just wanted to hang out with his family and mess with Kuniharu), but he does seem to test whether Teruhashi could be good hostage material - the grandpa plan failed and we know he later recruits Toritsuka. Luckily for Teruhashi, she's able to prove that she is NOT to be messed with, so that's another angle that's been shut down.

Next Kusuke sends the birthday bomb trials. This is explicitly to measure Kusuo's strength as Kusuke comes up with the perfect counter weapons. He's not trying to kill Kusuo after all, and later he actually gets nervous that the cat tank blast might be too powerful.

Then there's the KochiKame parody chapter, where Kusuke has a little fun getting Kuniharu his job back. No attempts to mess with Kusuo in this one and they interact super normally.

Then Warp the robot cat debuts. Since roboticizing humans didn't work for him, it seems Kusuke is going all-in on developing robots with as much functionality stuffed into them as possible. While Warp also serves as a gift for Kurumi, I think its also a step towards developing Kusuomega.

Ok there's also a chapter where Kusuke tries to get his grandma to divorce his grandpa. Just Kusuke being an asshole lol.

Kusuomega appears!! Since Kusuke's original plan was to throw a bunch of robot old people at Kusuo, it makes sense to test whether throwing a bunch of normal robots at Kusuo would work. Yeah, making Kusuomega lick his shoes is fucking bizarre and making him "fully featured" is also messed up. But Kusuke does also have to prove that he's willing and able to make Kusuomega do freaky shit at Kusuo's school to "properly motivate" Kusuo to fight back at full power. Kusuke puts a lot of effort into ensuring Kusuo doesn't half-ass their games and fights, going all the way back to the installation of the limiters.

Kusuomega was easily defeated, but instead of making more robots, Kusuke realizes he can use Toritsuka as both a weapon and a hostage. He immediately gets to work on that.

Then the cat tank arc, The Final Game. Kusuke was going to win Once And For All.

Except he didn't. Still, he gives Kusuo the option of whether to use the power deleter or not, without the leverage of publicizing his powers. Kusuke has accepted that he can't beat Kusuo, and that he's never going to get another chance to beat him full strength, because he knows Kusuo is going to use that power deleter. This is the ultimate sacrifice for Kusuke, since Kusuo's powers are his one interest and passion in life.

From then on, Kusuke is completely cooperative, helping Kusuo with the volcano problem and giving him genuine advice in trying to prevent his powers from returning. Naturally he gets a little excited at the prospect that Kusuo's powers might be back, but he does respect Kusuo's attempts to deny them back out of existence, setting up Kuniharu to fight the meteor instead of insisting Kusuo do it, even if this might mean they all die.

So in summary, it seems like:

Normal sibling rivalry -> limiters to try to end sibling rivalry -> escape to England -> Kusuo shows up so Kusuke tries to beat him for the first time in years and gets off on the loss -> Kusuke works towards a final conclusive game where he can win and then delete Kusuo's powers

While Kusuke justifies it as older siblings should always be superior to younger siblings, he clearly senses there's something wrong about their dynamic and he works hard to "fix" it in the only way he knows how: with an overwhelming win. And when even his biggest efforts fail, he accepts that he'll never win this way and lets go of their rivalry, shifting into a more normal sibling relationship. And Kusuo recognizes that and even seeks his help with the volcano for the first time.

So while their situation is definitely fucked for most of the series and Kusuke definitely did pretty much everything wrong... Things aren't QUITE as bad as they seem and it looks like the "bro-con" issue is gone by the end of canon.

Which sets Kusuke pretty far from Makoto, imo, who never recognizes for a second that his attraction is problematic and that even if that wasn't his sister, he should never treat another person that way.

Anyways, I figured it might be helpful to explain my thinking on Kusuke in more detail like this, so hopefully this was interesting and makes sense!

“Good grief. Finally we can eat a proper meal,” grumbled Gotou who sat beside Isshin as he threw a piece of torimotsu into his mouth, before chugging an entire glass of non-alcoholic beer in one gulp.

Haruka fully understood the feelings of Gotou, to have said that.

Ever since they had arrived in Yamanashi, spiritual cases had kept on coming one after another that they hadn’t been able to eat well.

Even when they had been staying at the hotel, they had only eaten onigiri or sandwiches from the convenience store thanks to the case that had suddenly happened.

It was only when they were about to head home that they eventually visited a restaurant called Yasohachian along the Koshu Kaido road, and had the chance to eat hoto like this.

Feeling content, Haruka shifted her chopsticks, but when she turned to her side, she found Yakumo staring at the pot full of hoto with a sour expression.

His food remained the way they had been served, yet to be touched at all.

“You’re not eating?” asked Haruka.

Yakumo lifted his eyebrow. “Must be nice for all of you to be so carefree,” he said, sighing.

What could be making him so displeased?

“Hoto is essentially a home-cooked dish,” he said, crossing his arms.

“I know.”

“In that case, you should understand how unnatural this hoto is,“ Yakumo glanced at the pot.

“Unnatural in what way?”

“What kind of home-cooked dish would be served in small single-portion pots?”

“That’s…”

Having mentioned that, it was true. A typical household wouldn’t have any single-portion sized pots such as these.

“Hoto should’ve been cooked in a large pot, and then divided into bowls to be served. Serving it in a small iron pot like this is just for show,” said Yakumo blatantly.

“Don’t say unnecessary things. As long as it’s tasty, serving it in any container won’t make a difference.”

“Well, that’s not surprising. A bear with damaged taste buds such as Gotou-san will never understand,” Yakumo immediately replied.

“What did you say–?!”

Isshin calmed Gotou, whose blood began to boil, saying, “Enough, enough.”

“He may be giving all sorts of excuses, but Yakumo simply can’t handle hot food,” said Isshin, throwing a gaze full of smiles towards Yakumo.

What. So that’s how it is.

For Yakumo who was unable to eat hot food, iron pots were his natural enemy as they preserved the heat circulating within the food.

Despite all the arrogant talk, he merely couldn’t eat yet as the food was still hot.

“Can’t eat because of the heat? That’s cute of you,” Gotou said mockingly.

“No. This has nothing to do with heat. I’m talking about the culture surrounding food here.”

“In that case, go ahead and try eating,”

Gotou’s clapback made Yakumo frown and went silent.

How unusual for Yakumo to become like this, who normally would always get back at Gotou.

His figure seemed so adorable that Haruka laughed without realising.

Yakumo’s glare instantly landed at her.

“All of you are so noisy. Just eat already, no? Eat—” said Yakumo in annoyance, lifting up his chopsticks, but his movement stopped.

Haruka knew he was forcing himself.

“What’s wrong? You’re not eating?” said Gotou, riling him up to get back at Yakumo’s treatment of him thus far.

“I’m eating even without you telling me,” Yakumo glared at Gotou, picking up the thick hoto noodles with his chopsticks.

Gazing sharply at the steaming hot noodles for a moment, he made his resolve and put it into his mouth.

The next second—

While Yakumo hadn’t yelled that it was hot, he immediately drank a glass of water to finish, after which he opened his mouth and stuck out his tongue whilst panting. “Hah, hah.”

Clutching his stomach, Gotou laughed out loud.

Isshin grumbled, “This is all because you were being stubborn,” as he wiped the table that Yakumo dirtied.

For a while, Haruka was able to hold back, but it wasn’t long until she burst into laughter as well.

Yakumo glared at her.

Haruka cleared her throat and tried to suppress her laugh.

“Don’t eat directly out of the iron pot like that,” said Haruka, moving the hoto from Yakumo’s pot into a bowl.

Even so, Yakumo still didn’t touch the hoto.

“What now? You want Haruka-chan to blow on the food and feed it to you?” teased Gotou.

Haruka’s face burned from embarrassment. Blowing on them would be fine, but not with feeding.

Realising she was imagining the idea put Haruka at a loss on what face she should make, so she turned her face away.

Huh?

It was at that moment Haruka realised that at the inner part of the tatami room where they were dining, hung a parchment scroll with a piece of painting stuck on it.

She wouldn’t have cared if it was any ordinary painting, but that painting in particular really caught her attention.

“What is it?” asked Isshin.

“That painting—” said Haruka, pointing at the parchment scroll so that everyone’s gaze were all focused there.

Depicted there were two men standing with their backs against each other.

One of the men appeared to be a samurai; carrying a sword on his waist while wearing a stern expression on his face.

The other person was a man clad in white kimono, holding a kongozue, his head lowered with a hint of sadness on his face.

And—

The man in the white kimono had eyes as red as blood.

Perhaps he was the same man that was in the painting they had seen in the sake factory.

“A curious painting, isn’t it?” said the middle-aged restaurant owner, who came to bring some tea.

“Ah, yes.”

“That painting has been handed down for generations. The samurai person’s name was Naitou Hayato. Well, he’s more known as Hijikata Toshizou of Shinsengumi.”

Haruka was stunned at the unexpected mention of a historical figure. “Hijikata Toshizou came to this place before?”

Yakumo sighed in disbelief. “You know nothing, do you.”

“My bad.”

“After the Battle of Toba—Fushimi, Shinsengumi was renamed as the Kouyou Chinbutai, and fought against the Imperial forces in Katsunuma.”

“I see...”

Haruka had no idea.

“According to the legend that was passed down, on his way to Katsunuma, Hijikata Toshizou visited our restaurant. This painting was painted at that time,” the restaurant owner said proudly while serving the tea before leaving.

This trip to Yamanashi had all started because of the painting of the man wearing a white kimono with two red eyes. Haruka never would have guessed that they would encounter a different painting depicting the same person.

Furthermore, he had been painted alongside Hijikata Toshizou, a notable person in history.

This felt like it was fated.

If the person in white kimono had been Yakumo’s ancestor, that would mean Yakumo had some connection to Hijikata Toshizou.

Thinking about it brought Haruka into a sense of wonder.

“How remarkably interesting. Perhaps we could find out more if we look into it in more detail,” said Isshin.

Gotou made a blatantly displeased look.

“Don’t be joking. We’re all the way here and you still want to go around?”

“Well, that’s true. Why don’t we go again next time to look into it?”

Haruka agreed with Isshin’s suggestion.

It would be interesting to come again next time to look into the man in white kimono that might have been Yakumo’s ancestor, with no spiritual case involved.

“Hey, Yakumo-kun. Let’s look into it,” said Haruka, hoping for Yakumo’s approval, but Yakumo responded with a sullen expression.

“That’s not necessary.”

“Why?”

“I don’t care who that person is. Just that…”

“What?”

“Despite living in a more difficult time than today, he accepted his fate nonetheless. Knowing that alone is enough for me.”

Yakumo’s words touched Haruka’s heart.

Based on what they had heard in the sake factory, this man had been a purification expert. He wouldn’t have been able to do it if he hadn’t accepted his own fate.

From Yakumo’s perspective, who had been suffering because of his red left eye, simply knowing that fact could become a support for him.

“Right—” Haruka nodded lightly.

“Well, looking into it or not, I’d like to come here without any spiritual case,” Isshin said cheerfully to wash away the gloomy atmosphere.

“You’re right,” Haruka replied with a smile.

As their trip this time had been overtaken by spiritual cases, even now she hadn’t really felt like she had come to Yamanashi. Next time, she should come without such matters weighing her down and take her time in doing so.

Surely it’ll be fun—thought Haruka, wallowing in emotion as she looked out the window.

The sight of Mount Fuji accompanied by the setting sun signified the end of their trip.

Sanji transitions to a woman living her best life with her crew. The vinsmokes find out the typical reactions indifference (They're kind of like kaido. Yeah, they're terrible, abusive, neglectful but they're not transphobic Jud is but the siblings are not).

Her sister is upset that she never got to spend time with sanji as sister.

Ichiji doesn't like that she looks so much like their mother it makes his feel something he doesn't know what it is happiness sadness maybe both but not enough to truly care about his sister.

yonji feelings are complicated. He's really angry, really angry. Looking at her bounty just makes him scowl she looks so nice and pretty. She also looks so happy and free not worried about judgment or slander from family and peers he hates it. He hates this weird feeling and he hates sanji. She's happy and living her life with her loving and accepting crew and he's stuck at home unable to open up about anything without backlash

( the weird feeling is envy specifically gender envy. Trans girl yonji she would be the most cold hearted girl on the planet but she'd be so pretty)

Niiji stopped caring about Sanji when she left the second time. Her being a girl now doesn't change anything and besides you could see the signs from mars of course she's a girl. He used to watch her play with her sisters doll all the time before throwing them in the moat

Ichiji is conflicted. Because he shouldn't care about Sanji at all. He doesn't care. Is she a girl now? Good for her. Whatever. She can do whatever the fuck she wants with her life. And yet he keeps finding himself staring at her wanted poster rather often, and seeing her mom in her. And he- He didn't care about his mom either. She's dead. It doesn't matter. But there's just something about Sanji now that makes him feel... Warm and melancholic and he hates it. He tries to avoid the subject completely.

Ohmygod- I love the idea of trans girl Yonji being jealous of Sanji's life and having gender envy. That's- That's so good. She shouldn't be able to feel like this and she should not want these things like her sister but she wants to be like that. Be free like that. And that makes her so, so angry and violent and she's constantly talking shit about Sanji only to feel better but it only makes her feel worse.

Niji is... Complicated. Because he doesn't care. But I think he'd also be jealous of her. Like- Jealous of her being happy and free. But he accepts it better than Yonji because Yonji goes all sentimental and violent and visibly jealous about it while Niji tries to be more like "Huh? I don't give a fuck about her. Why should I? Why do we even keep mentioning her? And besides, you didn't know she was a girl? It was obvious from a mile away. Not that I care. Because I don't care. She rejected our pretty kind invitation to the family again because she's an ungrateful bitch, anyway" but he actually does care and it frustrates him but, anyway, it's not like she's here anymore so he doesn't think about her. I also think he'd be annoyed about her looking like their mom btw he says she doesn't deserve it since it was her fault she died (and then he realizes what he said and he shouldn't have said it because in theory, he doesn't care about their mom dying).

And you're right, nobody cares about Judge. But I think it'd be funny if he complained about Sanji and misgendered her all the time while the siblings keep getting the pronouns right and they kind of... Defend her? To some extent? They start to develop stronger feelings as time passes by and I just think it'd be great for them to finally lose it with their dad because "at least she managed to find herself, we don't even know who we're supposed to be" and it doesn't matter which one of them says it, because it affects all of them equally and they have the biggest identity crisis ever only because their sister finally is happy and they want to be like that too.

Thinking about a D&D episode now (shout out to @lord-pretzel for the tag that gave me the idea).

Kaido would bring up the idea because that's exactly the kind of thing he would like, so naturally Saiki, Kuboyasu and Nendo are getting dragged into it to different levels of willingness. Then either Teruhashi or Yumehara are hearing about it and they're getting involved now alongside Mera. Hairo gets invited because everyone likes Hairo and Saiko is dragged along via his soft spot for Nendo.

It's a whole disaster.

Kaido is DMing with the edgiest story known to mankind, but his dramatics are actually very good to act the part of the enemies when it comes down to it, especially since he's amongst friends so he doesn't have to worry about stage fright.

Saiki debated for a whole hour about what kind of character he should make and what everyone would assume about him based on that. In the end, he went with Human Fighter, he's fulfilling his dreams of being the most average guy ever (although he's suffering because he can read Kaido's thoughts and knows the plot twists, unless he acquired another germanium ring and brought it along to actually enjoy this).

Teruhashi really wanted to try one of the most out there races like Bugbear or Goblin, but she's still too worried about what that would say about her so she ended up going with an Elf. She ended up picking a Bard for her Class since being charming is kinda expected of her but she was eyeing the Barbarians and Monks.

Nendo would be a Fighter too became he wasn't paying attention and Kaido just gave him that because he figured it would be the least complicated. Or a Barbarian, which in the end doesn't matter much because he just uses his attacks whenever someone is attacking Saiki, most of the time he actually tries to play nice with whoever they encounter because this is Nendo.

Hairo makes a Monk and he's far too committed to the bit. He breaks one of the lamps in the Kaidos' household because he insists in actually acting out each attack his character makes. He's trying to get more "wins" than Nendo's character despite the fact this is a cooperative game and Nendo isn't even interested in competing in the first place, but that tracks for them.

Yumehara was mostly planning to try and flirt with the NPCs Kaido offered as a subtle hint so they would have to act out romance scenes, so she picked a half-elf for the pretty factor, but she ended up getting far too attached to her cool Fiend Warlock spells and forgot about her initial goal, now she's kinda invested in acting out her backstory and using her most heinous spells if she gets the chance (it's the Occult Club vibes carrying over).

Mera is more interested in the snacks they brought at first so she's not paying that much attention to the game, but because she had no time between her multiple jobs, her character is basically her with some Rogue cosmetics. Her backstory includes too providing for her siblings and she ends up getting oddly passionate about the NPCs paying the party for their services because she gotta provide for her family, she can't do this work for free, for shame.

Kuboyasu is trying the "what I want to be" approach and went all the way to the other side so he made a Paladin of Devotion. He has to remind himself not to try and beat the shit out of every NPC who's kinda rude to them or of Saiko's character because he has an oath and he's NOT going to break it, though he doesn't hesitate at all as soon as they get a reason to attack.

Saiko wasn't particularly interested in this in the first place but he ended up going for a Druid so he could have his tiger. He put a lot of emphasis on picking the Noble background so he could have retainers, which is a bit hard to reconcile with his class, but he wasn't having it any other way. He makes very good use of those NPC retainers so he can have them doing for his character all the things he would have his real life servant do. He provided at least 75% of the snacks because he didn't want to eat "peasant food".

Despite all the disaster, it becomes a tradition.

Tried and failed to write yesterday but was successful today!! Finally started the goth fam sequel (yeah, not the prequel... oops) and also a short fic that's 99% finished at around 4k. It needs editing and polishing and then I'll try to post it in the next few days.

I just want my blorbos interact and was possessed by the sudden need for Perona and King to not only meet, but also braid each other's hair. I mean come on. It's the perfect activity for them. Plus, their captains have history!! I wanted to write something relatively light hearted anyways. So, here's a snippet:

“Moria complained all the time about your captain, you know,” she says, which gets his attention. He’s not keen on talking about Kaido much these days, but he supposes it can’t always be avoided. “That if not for him, he would have stayed in the New World. It was one stupid fight and he never shut up about it! Ugh, it was so annoying.”

“I was there,” Alber says without thinking. He does remember that fight, too, because Moria’s zombies had been a pain in the ass to put down. They were as susceptible to his fire as anything else, though. Kaido handled Moria himself.

“What?!” Perona drops his hair and braces her hands on his shoulder, leaning over to see his face. “Really? Moria was in his prime back then, I wish I could have seen it!”

“I was Kaido’s second from the very beginning,” he says, frowning. Back then. Had it really been that long ago, or is she just that young? “It was a fairly short fight. Moria didn’t belong in the New World, and we made sure he knew th - ach.”

Alber winces as Perona yanks a fistful of his hair.  “Don’t speak ill of Moria! How could you? After I’ve been so kind to you!”

As if she hasn’t complained about Moria several times already, and now she’s trying to exact some sort of transactional cost out of this activity again? He offers no apology, nor does she seem to expect one.

“Well,” she says with a sniff. She smooths her hands through his hair again, and picks up where she left off braiding. “If you hadn’t chased him out, he would have never found me, so. It’s alright, I guess.”

“Hm,” is all Alber says in response. It’s the closest he’ll get to an olive branch, but he’s never been above being petty. Perona is much nicer company than Queen, though, and if Mihawk allows her here, he needs to respect that, too.

“Hawkeyes told me to be nice to you if I ever ran into you,” she says, immediately undoing whatever goodwill had been extended just a moment ago.

Uneggpected Development

Honestly it was hard to know where to start so let's start with Silly Boy and his silly face interacting with Robonosuke. Yes of course I'm going to keep calling him that but don't worry, we'll get to the actual heavy Wano callbacks later. This is a weird chapter...because it feels like we're hurtling swiftly towards an ending to Egghead now. Our giant robot friendo is a big part of that.

As we're blasting off the big robo seems to be gearing up for a huge attack. Maybe a self-destruction. A concept echoed nowhere else in this chapter and certainly not anywhere recently. But you do have this moment that reminds me of Zunisha. Luffy hearing what is likely the Voice of All Things emanating from Robonosuke. Dude is finally ready to rock and roll, looks like it'll time out well with the final notes of the broadcast. You'll see this theme pop up again here, I really want to see the next note before I think too heavily about that but we'll have a lot more to talk about that through the lens of...

Atlas pulls a move we've seen out of other Vegapunks before and seems set to become yet another casualty of this arc. I don't care too much about that for this review, not because I don't like it but because of what Atlas does first. Slamming Lilith into the deck and turning off some kind of tracking device York was using. Which...type of thing that would have been nice to come up at some point earlier but I'll give at least a chapter or two to see if there's like, a reason they didn't do that earlier.

It's obviously Lilith I care about. We could move very quickly out of here into the next arc. Like, you could literally do it in one chapter. Robonosuke go boom cutting off Vegpaunk from giving too much of a reveal, Coup de Burst off into the sunset, cue the newspapers. Lilith is hanging around for whatever reason as a tie to the next. Lilith even can relatively quickly become an off-ramp for what I've seen winding out of Wano through Vivi, Bonney, & Stussy this arc. She was a first impression of the arc too, even had some little quirks with that building off of Kiku last arc who did the same with Pudding who did the same with Rebecca. Speaking of though, pay attention to the title.

Two problems. One that leaves a lot untied. Like, much more than Wano. I suppose you could fill in a bunch of stuff after the exit about Lilith, but the reason that idea ever worked at all for Kiku was because of her personality. Stussy's someone who can believably pull that too, we even just saw her do something like that with her talking to Kaku. Lilith is like, the opposite of mysterious. There was nothing like a mini arc introducing you as cryptic and guarded or juggling loyalties all Egghead. York was the one who played really well into that aspect of things. Lilith is even after Atlas right here giving you the self-sacrifice and how about that light/dark framing with the different expressions up there!

Two, as it stands now there's still no real "point" to the story. This is all literally happening while Vegapunk Prime dumps everything he knows about the big lore, of course he isn't going to get too close because that's Robin's story. So I doubt Lilith has some extra info to add. And of course...a lot of things have flared up for a couple of chapters and faded as quickly as they did. I don't think we're too far from the end, but I still have that feeling this is a little misleading. There was one last aspect of this chapter that makes me wonder about just a little more getting us there:

It's the combination of Clover's denial of his name to survive as well as this late-game Punk Hazard flashback. It all feels so, so Kaido all of a sudden. Maybe it helps or hurts that I'm watching through dub Wano's end with sweetie but this scene feels like such a blend of Kaido, King, & Momonosuke right now. Which is a really weird discordant note. Chapter 16: Shoaling Trafalgar Law x gn!reader word count: 2.5k first|next

“Alright, alright. That’s enough,” Law finally said. Everyone pulled away, dispersing slightly. Bepo, being his usual self, apologized for his actions. You smiled, shaking your head. “Don’t say sorry, it’s not your mistake. You were just excited.” You felt Law stare at you - as he always did when you said those words. You wondered if he remembered you saying them to him all those years ago and that’s why he always looked at you the way he did as you said them.

“We should head to Catviper’s now!” You looked to Bepo, blinking. “Who?” Bepo looked at you with a smile. “Catviper! He is one of the kings of this island. It is approaching nightfall, so he will be awake soon.” You looked to Law who only shrugged. “Let’s go then,” he said.

Soon, you were on your way. Bepo filled you both in on what happened to the island - why it looked so devastated. Such a peaceful and happy island filled with pain and suffering just because some pirates were delusional in their own beliefs. It brought your mind to your own island. How it was destroyed because of one pirate’s delusions. Even if they did turn out to be true. 

You felt a hand to the small of your back and you were yanked from your thoughts. You looked over, seeing Law. He was looking straight ahead, listening to Bepo, but it seemed as if he knew you were spiraling in your own mind and was trying to stop you. He removed his hand from you once you seemed to be back in the present but you still felt warm from where his hand had sat. 

Eventually, you heard a commotion and everyone started running. Once you broke the treeline, you saw…quite the scene. You saw a large cat along with some other minks. It seemed they were all fretting over him. You heard Chopper’s voice ring through the air and you felt a pang of guilt. You had snuck out on him when you were supposed to be in his care. You owed him an apology. 

“Traffy! Y/n!” Luffy’s voice suddenly rang through the air and you saw his figure waving at you. You smiled, returning the wave. 

“Traffy, are those your crewmates?” 

That’s right. This is my crew - twenty strong.” The rest of the crew chimed it. “Nice to make your acquaintance Strawhat!” Luffy nodded, holding a hand up in greeting. “Yo!”

Law walked over, beckoning you with him. “Strawhat, we need to talk.” 

“Okay!” 

The Heart Pirates seemed suddenly offended. “Is that all? The disrespect!” They all kept chiming. Law groaned. “It’s just an alliance - no one said you had to be friends!” You couldn’t help but laugh, looking at the crew apologetically. “I’m sure you all will get along fine.”

Bepo hugged you. “At least Y/n doesn’t disrespect us,” he said, rubbing his face on yours. You laughed, pushing him off slightly. “Okay, okay. I have to go, Bepo. But, I promise, Luffy doesn’t mean any disrespect. He doesn’t have anything to hate you for.” 

Once out of the clutches of the polar bear, you headed inside. “About time, y/n.” You narrowed your eyes at Law. “Well, someone had to comfort your crew.” He narrowed his eyes right back at you. Then you both broke out into small grins before turning your attention back to the situation at hand. 

Then Luffy dropped a bomb on you. You stood there - eyes wide in shock. Sanji was gone? You listen as he filled you in. You remember when you first met the cook. It was after Luffy had saved your life. He had offered to make you lunch and you both had a wonderful discussion about food. You remember introducing him to some of your native dishes from your island. They were recipes he had never heard of. 

Ever since then, whenever you’d meet up with them, you would teach him some new dishes and recipes. It was your little bonding moment. You had those moments with each member of the crew. 

“That’s why I think we should wait for the whole Kaido thing so I can go and get Sanji! We can’t do it without him!” Luffy frowned deeply. You knew how much he cared for his cook. He was wholly convinced that he wouldn’t be king of the pirates without him. He knew he was nothing without his crew. You respected him a lot for that. 

“Well, we’re sitting ducks here. Kaido will come after us. We would’ve been able to hold out here, but it seems that they already know that we’re here. So, what are we supposed to do? If they come back, what’ll become of this country?” Law was making some pretty solid points. You didn’t want to get the innocent citizens of this island more involved than they already were. You felt bad for them - they had been through so much.

You suddenly heard cries from right outside the house and you jumped. When had all those minks gotten there? “You guys have such good hearts for worrying about us!”, “Are you sure you’re pirates?” You snorted softly. You wondered the same sometimes. Luffy had such a big heart - he wasn’t a normal pirate, that much was for sure. It seemed that Law was more like Luffy than he would probably like to admit. A couple of oddballs for pirates, that’s for sure.

“Let’s have a feast!” Catvipe suddenly announced. You blinked as everyone started cheering all of a sudden. They really were moving fast. One moment, you were talking about Sanji; the next, cheering about a feast. Luckily, it wouldn’t be until tomorrow, so you had time to recuperate.

You weren’t exactly sure how it happened, but you were currently in the middle of town, watching as Catviper and Dogstorm bow down to the sobbing child that you’ve been around since Punk Hazard, Momonosuke. What was happening?

He was a lord? In Wano? Your head was reeling and now you watched as Kin’emon explained very quickly. Everything happened all at once and now there was a ceasefire between the two kings and so much information was just revealed to you. Your own head was spinning.

“Momonosuke, if your father is a great lord,” you heard Nami begin, “then he must have a big castle with lots of treasure.” 

“Don’t you dare!” you found yourself yelling with Usopp and Zoro. You couldn’t believe the audacity of her sometimes, but that’s also what made her Nami.

Once that excitement was over, you were tagging along with everyone to the giant whale tree. This day had been full of events and you were absolutely wiped. Too much excitement. This is why you only spent so much time with Luffy. He attracted so much attention - way more than you were used to. You could only take so much at a time…and you were way past your limit. What was even more was that you didn’t see this ending anytime soon. You needed to help with Sanji and seemed to silently agree to take down Kaido.

You felt someone tap your head, yanking you from your thoughts. You looked over, seeing Law adjusting his sword back on his shoulder. How did he always know? You rubbed your head a little. “Was it too hard?” You looked at him, shaking your head. “Ah, no. Just startled,” you said.

Your group made its way into the whale. In its depths you saw someone tied and chained up. This was the ninja that everyone had been so excited to see. Watching Luffy and the other’s physically deflate was almost enough to make you laugh. You even noticed a little bit of disappointment in Law’s eyes.

They started demanding he do “cool ninja stuff” and you watched as he shattered their dreams - telling them it’s not a parlor trick. They deflated further only for Raizo to begin to do just that, showing off his ninja moves like a parlor trick. Everyone started cheering and overall in awe. This was honestly the cutest thing you’d ever seen. 

“Didn’t take you as a ninja fan,” you teased in a low voice, coming up next to Law. He looked at you with narrowed eyes. “Everyone is a ninja fan.” You grinned, shrugging. You weren’t going to lie - it absolutely was awesome seeing a real ninja in person. “You’re not wrong,” you mused before looking at him again. “Just didn’t expect you to be a secret nerd. Next you’re gonna tell me you collect comic books.” He was silent and hid under his hat - your eyes widened.

“YOU D-” He moved fast, his hand suddenly clamping over your mouth before you could draw too much attention to the two of you. Your eyes widened in surprise. “Don’t even,” he said in a dangerously low voice. You felt a shiver down your spine as you looked at him in those golden eyes of his. You were suddenly very aware of just how your bodies pressed together. You felt your heart race, but you pushed it all aside - letting out a giggle.

“Okay, okay,” you said, pushing his hand from your mouth. You grinned widely. “You’ll have to show me this collection of yours. What is it?” Law groaned, stepping away from you. “Not now,” he mumbled and you followed him. “Absolutely right now. You can’t just drop a bomb on me like that and expect me not to demand answers.” He turned around to glare at you once more and you just let out a wide, shit-eating grin.

You weren’t going to let him live this down and you could tell he knew that. The stoic grumpy doctor having a secret nerdy side? Charming, really. He groaned, turning his attention back to the situation at hand as you did the same. You would definitely be asking questions about it later.

You turned your attention back to the situation at hand, feeling eyes bore into the back of your head. Or the side. You looked over, noticing Nami’s face. Oh, if this wasn’t instant karma. Now, you wouldn’t hear the end of things.

Once more, information was absolutely flung at you. The history of the poneglyphs, where they were possibly located, information of Momonosuke’s father, Oden, and so much more. Your mind reeled again as you took in the information, but you had a mental note in your head when they mentioned Big Mom having one of the red poneglyphs. Looks like you’d be doing more than just saving Sanji there. You had also made the decision to go and assist Luffy in retrieving the cook.

It seemed everyone’s resolve to take down Kaido deepened as well. Everything seemed to be connected and connecting the more everyone spoke about it. 

Suddenly, Kin’emon was bowing, begging Luffy and Law to help take down their current shogun in Wano and Kaido. You watched the scene fold in front of you. Luffy declined, making his crewmates protest, but you saw the look in his eye. “Hold on guys,” you tried, but your words fell on deaf ears. Then Luffy demanded that Momonosuke ask - to take the lead like he’s supposed to. A fond smile stretches across your face. You knew exactly what Luffy was trying to do even if the others couldn’t.

He even stopped the small lord from completely bowing to beg. Then, Luffy agreed to help. And just like that - a new alliance was formed. A sweet scene had unfolded and now a new alliance was created. 

On the walk back, even more information was revealed to the group. It seemed that everyone had been more interconnected than you thought. It was insane how everything wove together almost perfectly. You were lost in thought when you heard a certain name that brought your attention back to the present.

Marco the Phoenix.

Your attention snapped back to Catviper who had mentioned going to look for him. You had been pretty close to Marco as well. He had patched you up plenty of times. He treated you like a younger sibling just as he did to most of his crew. You hadn’t seen him since the war and you’ll never forget the look he gave you that day. Your heart clenched.

You remembered hearing about the grudge war. You had been so worried about Marco since then. You wished you had went and sought him out but it just never worked out. Then they just disappeared. Hearing Catviper say he was alive and that he likely knew where he was - you felt relief in your chest. You let out a silent breath that you didn’t realize you had been holding. 

After that, plans of what to do next were talked about. Some were going to Wano, Catviper was going to go find Marco, and the rest were going to save Sanji. Nami said she was going with Luffy. Brook and Chopper said they were going to. You spoke up. “I’m going too.” Luffy looked at you and blinked, but he wasn’t about to argue with you. He knew he’d lose that battle. 

Law, however, made a noise of surprise. You looked at him. “You got something to say, doc?” you asked, narrowing your eyes. You two started your own separate conversation. “I just don’t think you need to go.” Law shrugged.

“I-” You stared at him incredulously. Was he serious right now? “The hell am I going to do in Wano? I can’t just sit around while Luffy risks his life. I need to go and help.” He shook his head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” You put your hands on your hips, not understanding what was happening right now.

“I don’t understand why you think you have any say in what I do. You’re not my captain.” He stared at you as you said those words. “You’re the one who said they’d join me if we met up again.”

“I said that I would if you asked. And as far as I know, you haven’t asked.” You glared at him and he pursed his lips for a moment. “And don’t bother asking now - that would be so unfair.” You said you’d join if he asked. The asking was a formality. If he asked, you wouldn’t have a choice but to say yes. He looked at you for a long moment. “You would lose me so fast,” you said in a low voice. “Shortest crew member time ever.” He clenched his jaw. You could tell he was pissed, but you didn’t care. You were never one who liked being told what to do and you weren’t about to let him start.

“If you think you can try to pull something - just don’t.” You warned. 

Just then, the ground underneath you shifted drastically. You yelped as you stumbled, falling right into Law and both of you falling to the ground. It was like an earthquake but at a higher caliber. What the hell was going on?

I think he's pretty comfy with his binder, but he is going through the process of getting top surgery.

He's saving up for the procedure, himself. His dad has offered to pay, but he's a bitch-ass h8r in every other aspect of Yama-bro's life, so he wants to get it done by himself and he doesn't mind waiting.

Im just in love with the fact that Kaido is one of the most abusive parents known to man, he locked his son up in a dungeon with the idea that he would have to fight for his life against 3 of the most dangerous men in Wano at the time, crucified everyone who was ever nice to him, shackled him with explosive cuffs, physically assaults him, and tries to kill him on many occasions. But there's a line that he will not cross and that line is misgendering his son.

"Yamato, you are my daughter and I'm gonna try to kill you!" "I GO BY HE/HIM NOW" "Oh, sorry my bad, you are my son and I'm gonna try to kill you.
