I survived my DOL meeting and only feel like a minor failure at life!

While it's nice that they include activities like said meetings, things like working on your resume and taking free classes towards your 'job search' count, I feel it's ridiculous to expect people to job search out to 50 miles/1 hr of travel.

Would the job even pay for your mileage, wear on the car, and loss of the will to live going out that far?! Like jfc my personal limit has been 30 minutes (not including the bus, which took like 1 -1.5 hrs), because past that what kind of life are you even working towards?

Got some shit for not having a driver's license and not like having it medically taken away or whatever but I don't feel safe driving. Not with my migraines, anxiety, and poor attention span. At 37 without one, you'd think that people could just understand that there's something 'wrong' with me, so to speak. Like all the places I want to go? The jobs I could have? Is being limited by the bus, walking, and available rides somehow ☆glamorous☆ by comparison? Does it not speak to something past 'laziness'? Like I could randomly take myself to the zoo! I could surprise my partner with a special trip! I could maybe be a private investigator like I goddamn want(ed) to be!!

And yes, I'm not in physical therapy rn. They told me I didn't need it. Usually the specialist saying that you don't 'need' something means insurance won't pay for it. I can ask my Dr next week about it, but??? Idk, the whole thing with my hand has been a lot of ass and things not going as they should and very frustrating! My hand is *better* but not healed. There's 1.5 ish years of issue, it didn't seem accurate that it could clear up in only 3 months.

Apparently both those things rankled me more than I thought, but the meeting other than that was good I guess. Got some new places to check for jobs, and some to maybe apply to.

But that's a later/tomorrow thing. I am very emotionally tired from that and other errands today.

Antis will be like “Jiang Cheng never viewed Wei Wuxian as family, he was treated like a servant!!! 😠😠😠” but like… if I showed up day-drunk to work, stopped performing my basic duties, kept skipping out when the most support was needed rebuilding, escalated fights during diplomatic events, and refused to tell anyone why I’d started behaving like this, I would definitely get fired. But instead Wei Wuxian has to quiet quit and then actually quit when even that doesn’t work, because as far as we can tell Jiang Cheng would've let him stay as first disciple forever no matter what. So like, if Jiang Cheng thinks of himself as just Wei Wuxian's boss, he does a pretty bad job of treating Wei Wuxian as just an employee.

Are there complicated class dynamics and internal senses of responsibility and debt and duty and obligation fucking both of them up? Absolutely. But Wei Wuxian is definitely not just a servant or a debtor, it’s much, much messier and more complicated than that--which is kind of the problem.

Thinking of how, so many times before, I’ve watched women in mcc, and how sometimes they would go silent (or be talked over) for a minute, maybe minutes at a time, only speaking up occasionally to add something small, and how nobody on their team would really comment on it. Now thinking about how, today during one of the games, I can’t remember when, Jojo didn’t say anything for... ten seconds? Maybe not even? and Shadoune immediately spoke up, asked her what happened, why she wasn’t talking, expressed concern, i can’t remember if he suggested technical issues (because he had some earlier), and she quickly said no, no, I’m alright and he immediately said something like, oh, okay, don’t do that! You need to talk! And obviously it wasn’t those exact words, (paraphrasing, translation), but something along those lines, and I can’t exactly explain why it’s so special to me, but like, I think sometime back in S1, watching Niki spend minutes without saying a word to her team, seeing people post about False not getting listened to, having a tiny part of me accept that that’s just how things were for women- idk, it just makes me think like... things will improve. And I wish I could have shown my two-years-ago self that: I loved mcc then, and I still do now, but I always had to numb myself a little to watch it- to ignore the little things like getting talked over or else I would get upset. And that was such a small moment, really, it almost meant nothing, and maybe it does to other people- but it means something to me.

There's a couple things going on in the epigraph for Book 1. On one level, it's a lyric from the first muggle song I picture Draco listening to on his walkman at the end of the book, so there's a cute full-circle thing there. The second layer is the theme of change and redemption, which, in Lionheart, doesn't so much come from major moments or self-sacrifice, but from the slow, grueling, everyday work of living, and living better. It's a nice day to start again because every day is. You always have the opportunity to start making better choices, no matter what lies behind you. That's the thesis of any Draco redemption arc, right? You have to imagine that he could have chosen to be better.

And then thirdly, there's the audacity of doing a full Hogwarts canon rewrite, a good 30 years after the original books came out, millions upon millions of words of fanfic later, and basically asking everyone to read the same story they did the first time around, only different. So it's a kind of winking entreaty. It's saying to readers, many of whom are understandably wary of doing it over, zeroing out the characters to starting positions, and starting from the beginning with 11-year-olds all over again. It's going: "hey. That was fun, right? Why not do it again?"
