you know, after watching day 3 of the democratic national convention, i need to say something, especially to other muslims like me.
most of the muslim communities that i'm a part of have chosen to vote uncommitted, or independent, or sometimes, even trump. they refuse to give their vote to kamala harris and tim walz, because of the way the us has handled the war in gaza, and how they have been careless with acknowledging palestinian lives lost, how it was american bombs and american tax money that went towards funding this genocide. it's fucked up, and it's wrong, and there shouldn't be any debate on that.
and i am 100% in support of that anger. i am 100% in support of forcing america to stop funding this genocide. no one wants to keep seeing palestinian lives suffer. no one is free until we're all free, and i believe that to my very core.
my only concern is that where this anger is being placed, from 1 year to 11 weeks before the presidential election, is so scary. because the reality of the situation is that america has a bipartisan outlook. whoever gets the presidency is either democrat or republican. and every vote that doesn't go towards democracy (i.e. voting for kamala harris) inadvertently goes towards trump's big plan of project 2025, which is basically dictatorship. Even voting uncommitted, even voting independent. we cannot afford to elect trump for a second term, and voting anything other than democrat draws that line way too close, especially in swing states like michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, georgia.
yes, there are many issues that we wish joe biden would handle better. there are many ways that the democratic party has fucked up beyond repair. there are many ways the democratic party has refused to acknowledge the pain of people affected by their military people throughout the years, and we've been seeing it for years. this is not a new thing. this did not start on october 7th. we see it during pretty much every administration.
however, voting for your candidate should never be based on a singular issue. no political candidate is ever going to check every single box. and its so unfortunate that we have to always take the "lesser of two evils" approach when nominating our president, but that's the reality of the situation at this very moment. there are many other rights to be considered that are at stake this election, all of which trump is trying to remove. abortion bans, women's rights, healthcare, social security, climate change, to name a few.
(and, somehow, there's a belief that trump will lead to a ceasefire deal where biden-harris didn't? let me tell you that is never going to happen.)
does this mean we just stop protesting or pressuring? absolutely not. you NEVER stop, because if our votes are the ones that put the candidate in their position of power, then we expect results. we expect them to work towards what they promised. and we can't let up on reaching out to our local county offices and our state governors and escalating these issues further until someone takes notice and does something about them. we don't elect them and just leave them to do what they want. we keep them accountable. use that anger i was talking about.
but it also means not having tunnel vision. the election in november could very well mean the end of democracy if kamala harris doesn't win. this post is not me all giggly-happy over the democratic party, because trust me, i have my fair share of issues with them as well. this post isn't to tell you what to do, because i can't force you to vote blue. i can't force the community i'm in to change their minds about toss-up votes. but what i can do is put down plainly what's at stake this election. and that is, very simply, our right to choose everything.
so if you are eligible to vote and haven't registered, please do. if you haven't voted before because "what's the point", please see above what the point is. a handful of votes is enough to flip the outcome of an election, especially with the electoral college.
and if you're still on the fence on whether to vote for kamala or trump, hopefully this post gives a little bit more perspective in the most streamlined way i could manage without bogging you down with statistics and numbers.
the choice is yours.
#zee rambles#as a muslim person of color who is going to practice medicine in this country there is just so much at stake#us politics#politics#vote democrat#democracy#2024 elections#elections#us elections#this post got a little long. but hopefully it inspires some of you#and for those of us who are in communities where people are teetering between harris and trump#it boggles my mind sometimes#tumblr has been so silent about politics and i get it but also there needs to be more encouragement to go out and vote#if you're protesting right now that's completely okay#it's just that ballot in november is so so important for the future of this country#so we have at least a chance towards a world we want versus losing everything we know altogether if trump gets re-elected#ty chey for looking this over and making sure i didn't sound like an idiot <3 mwah ly

the way this website balks at the term "culturally christian" is so funny to me like. oh shit you mean the religion our government and culture is structured around might impact you even if you're atheist and ESPECIALLY if you're ex-christian? noooo it's the people using it to describe a phenomenon of western culture that are wrong
#I think sometimes it's a genuine misunderstanding of the term#but others it's just a knee-jerk reaction against being associated w christianity#like babe just bc you left the church does not mean the church left you!#esp if you continue to parrot very christian beliefs!#and even people born and raised atheist are dealing w morals imbedded in western society by christianity#it's also not exclusive to christianity! culturally muslim people exist in other countries & cultural hinduism etc...#it's about what religion is The Major Religion backing the moral decisions of a society#regardless of your personal belief

Me to people who are using "judeochristian" imprudently
#jumblr#personal thoughts tag#the thing that inspired this was my prof saying america is judeochristian#but then he could ONLY name things xtians and muslims do. literally NOTHING mentioned about jewish practices just them#doesn't seem as judeochristian if you know so little about jews that you can't even give an example as to what we* do#i just thought that was just a funny juxtaposition

"They make being ex Christian/Muslim their whole personality 😒." Good for them! Deconstructing and leaving your religion is difficult to do, they should be proud for making that choice and embarking on that journey.
#they don't make it their whole personality babe you're just an intolerant ass#ex muslim#ex christian#also when people first leave a religion its going to be the forefront of what they're dealing so yes they will mention it a lot#cry about it#cope and seethe

three things can be true at the same time. 1, christian (and ex-christian) arab, muslim, etc cultures are all deeply steeped in antisemitism. 2, muslims, christians etc who do fight antisemitism come from that same culture but are some of the loudest and most cherished allies. 3, there are tons of christians and muslims who aren't antisemitic, don't give two shits about jews neither hate nor love, full stop, and treating all christians and muslims as suspect is racist as hell.
antisemites are not subtle, smart, ethical, truthful or just "misspeaking"/"well meaning" when they cover their antisemitism with antizionist talk. they tell you who they are in a million different ways and treating large groups like they are all antisemites for being born is as wrong as hating all woman, men, blacks, whites, etc for the same.
idk. i just don't want to end up funneling my anger at the media and the amsterdam pogrom and the many many attacks against jews around the world into bigotry. i have to periodically remind myself that most people are normal and the jew hatred I'm constantly exposed to is done by people who mean to do it and want me funneled into the same bigoted bullshit that they are steeped in. i never want to abandon my humanity to become a racist like that, especially not because racists attack me.
#jumblr#leftist antisemitism#antisemitism#sorry#i know this is my thousandth post like this but its important to me that i stay the kind of person i respect#the amount of anti muslim and anti arab media i get suggested for being pro israel is disgusting#it's one of the things that makes me so mad about leftists is that they expect me to support trump just because they hate jews and lie#humans deserve dignity and deserve to live#i repeat myself for myself and my personhood

Just saw some Free Palestine supporters on the road to my parents’ house and was about to wave at them but then I saw a couple of them holding signs making disgusting antisemitic jokes about Passover. Guys seriously how fucking difficult is it to just. Not do that 😭 You’re really not giving Palestine extra help by making horrible comments and jokes about Jews ffs can you not just promote support for Palestine without bringing hatred for entire minority demographics into it DURING THE TIME OF A RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY. It is remarkably easy to criticise Israel without antisemitism and if you can’t do that then maybe you should stay out of the movement because you’re causing much more harm than good
#It was in such a small town as well where I doubt anyone has ever even met a Jewish person#Like in the city I’d expect some of that cos there’s more people but a tiny Northern town? That’s scary#Makes me so sad when bigots highjack what should be a compassionate movement#I know it must be so scary to be Jewish or Muslim right now and it stresses me out just thinking about it#Like it’s scary being Jewish or Muslim any day of the year but especially with everything going on lately#I’m sad. People make me sad#When will the hatred and violence ever stop fr#Ugh my day’s ruined now someone send me something funny pls#personal#vent#rant#antisemitism#free palestine#free gaza#i/p#protest

#so anyway i’m on a train and this is my quick recap#of what i’ve been up to the last year#firstly i found out i have adhd because i was so burnt out and anxious i was sent to the hospital with a suspected heart attack lol#which they’re currently looking into to see if i have any heart problems or just anxiety 24/7 🙃#either way it’s been a great explanation for why i find everything so difficult everyday when i didn’t even know i was finding it hard 😐#my mum also almost died which was very much not fun and a little traumatising#i also can’t remember if i mentioned this before i disappeared (i must have) but i bought my own flat here in london which was my lifes goal#and i’ve spent the last like 8 months renovating to my own taste#it’s been a crazy and overwhelming experience doing all#of this by myself#but nether the less she persisted !!!!#and i’m finally in!!!#living alone? would highly recommend#and lastly this genocide has broken my heart completely and disrupted my ability to enjoy a lot of things and was why i wouldn’t bring#myself to come on here and talk about things that really didn’t matter in comparison#i have a friend directly effected and i feel v personally effected as someone who is west asian/muslim#so yeah it’s been difficult#and then the liam news hit me like a truck#it’s just been a Time#and the months slipped away from me like water#the only good thing that’s happened i guess is that i discovered sleep token this year and they immediately became my favourite band#i’m seeing them next month and have had them on repeat non stop#so apologies in advance for turning into a sleep token blog lol

I will be honest I am pausing my studyblr posts to post for palestine. My brother has left this world recently (unrelated to the conflict) and when I try to distract myself from it I find myself in a world where almost everyone with any power is supporting the genocide of my fellow people.
#I understand people may have their thoughts on this#but even if you don’t agree with me#I still invite you to stay and think#and research#and question your sources#the victims are not organized#but you know what is organized? governments. you can only push propaganda if you have power and are organized#none of which the Palestinians have.#so please. please do some research and be firm in your stance whatever it is#don’t just take the stances of others to make yourself feel like a good person#when you don’t even know what it all entails#and just to clarify because we live in an era of nation states#I am not from palestine but they are my people I grew up with a community of palestinians#and as a muslim they are my brothers and sisters#tho if you do the research you’ll find that isra*l also targets palestinian christians#about half of Christian Palestinians were kicked out of Jerusalem by Isr*el

The very specific paralyzing fear as a person of colour with OCD, that you might be acting like a white person to other marginalized people.
#*me‚ obsessively reading my tags on a black person's post* does this have 'as a white person' vibes??#*re-reading my comment sympathizing w trans people* do i sound like 'as a white person i want to apologise on behalf of all white people'?#*editing and re-editing tags about my sympathy and anger on behalf of muslims* do i sound like i'm proud of not being islamophobic?#*writing a reply on the historical overlap between racism and intersexism* is this solidarity or am i derailing?#the worst thing is that my fight or flight is set to 'fight' which means the more i panic about posting the more likely i am to post it#it comes across as belligerence and boldness when it's actually just my one freaked out braincell trying to run into whack things with a bat#racism#white people#ocd#actually ocd#moral scrupulosity#pure ocd#obsessive compulsive disorder#allyship#knee of huss

One reason to vote i haven't personally seen mentioned (at least not phrased this way) is that even IF both candidates had the same exact genocide-enabling policies regarding israel, and only differed on domestic policy, one would still present a better fighting chance for palestine because like. A population with better healthcare, less poverty risk, stronger unions, higher wages and better protection for protesters will be more capable of protest.
A person who has to work multiple jobs to stay afloat is less likely to care and to protest about palestine than one who has to work less. A person who has to be a full time caretaker for an elderly or disabled family member with no financial support is less likely to educate themselves, to care and to protest than one who has the support they need. A person who already cares about and protests their country's insufficient climate policies will be more likely to take the time to protest Israel's genocide if there's fewer pieces of bad climate legislation to occupy their attention.
On the whole, a population that's healthier, more secure and less oppressed by its government doesn't inherently, entirely become complacent and self satisfied - many people in it will have the time, energy and safety to pay attention to the injustices elsewhere in the world and try their best to do something about them
#s#uspol#us politics#election 2024#the extreme of this is how. yknow. under more conservative domestic policies more poor ppl and more nonwhite ppl and more disabled ppl#and more muslim ppl will just straight up die. or be deported in some cases. yknow. the exact populations that are more likely to care abt#various injustices at home and abroad. including palestine#like if u want the us's policies on israel to change then surely you must admit it would be beneficial if all the marginalised ppl in the u#didn't die or go to prison or get deported or have their lives upended by climate disasters or have to direct all their energy and time#towards those who do#anyway I'm sure other have in fact said this elsewhere but i personally haven't encountered this argument in the wild so to speak so

Nothing pisses me off quite like annoying guilt-trippy posts by idiots who cared about Ukraine for exactly five minutes in 2022 and have not thought about Russia's brutal invasion for so much as one second since beyond making posts complaining about the "~overwhelming support~" Ukraine has supposedly recieved compared to other ongoing world events and posts that go "IMAGINE IF THIS WAS HAPPENING IN UKRAINE then you would CARE but because it's BROWN people U WON'T" You are a fake activist you are a pathetic trend chaser & the people you claim to care about deserve better than the likes of you because your moral integrity could fit into a fraction of a fraction of a millimetre
#oh wait they're usually yanks lemme pull up a chart to translate for em real quick: your moral integrity could fit#into a FRACTION OF A *FRACTION* OF AN INCH#Legit if you've ever said ''imagine if this happened in Ukraine'' shut up because it HAS happened and guess what?#the world has NOT CARED as much as you THINK they did. There was ONE news story at best and then they MOVED ON.#it's ''just'' Ukraine ''just'' an ex soviet state ''JUST'' a BUFFER state between Euro and Ruzzia and really ''Ukrainains are Russian''#Know who cared when Ruzzia annexed Crimea and STARTED this war *10* years ago? NO ONE.#(Crimean Tartars are generally muslim & COULD be considered POC by North American standards. Just a fun little btw)#If not for revealing the truth of Bucha and Mariupol especially this war WOULD have been forgotten about by the world at large AGAIN#YES IT WOULD HAVE YOU DON'T GET TO SPEAK OVER ME I WAS CARING ABOUT UKRAINE BEFORE YOU COULD POINT IT OUT ON A MAP#*Unless you're Ukrainian in/from Ukraine then speak over me if you want to I guess#kat gets personal#me#current events#ukraine

I updated my blog intro, but in case it isn't clear - this blog stands with Muslims for a future free of antisemitism and islamophobia. In order to make sure this future is possible, we must stand together, and indeed, I want to stand with others as a co-conspirator.
#jumblr#jewish conversion#jew by choice#personal thoughts tag#antisemitism#islamophobia#jewish and muslim solidarity is imperative in a world that often hates both groups#this isn't really a post directly about current affairs but it is a recognition that non-muslim and non-jews have been invested in#the destruction of BOTH muslims and jews often. yes - there are complex conversations we can (and should) have about muslims and jews#but i am ill-prepared for that and am much more prepared for solidarity#just something that's been on my mind#anyway i've seen a few muslims following me and i want them to know i want to welcome them#most of my followers seem to also be jews or jews in progress tho so it always stands out to me and makes me happy

stuff i wish people did when making a filipino character (part 1?)
disclaimer: i am by no means an expert, but i am a born and raised filipino so! take that as you will
actually make the filipino be born and raised in the philippines. there are very few filipinos that show just how beautiful (and, admittedly, toxic) the culture of the philippines can be in modern media, if AT ALL.
like lets talk about the toxicity of filipino culture -cause there is SO much to be said about how problematic the hierarchical family structure is of most filipino families. children are rarely given any agency, are spoiled in the early beginnings of their lives and then suddenly once theyre adults theyre expected to just know how to adult despite being sheltered their entire lives.
okay and lets not even get STARTED with religious trauma. there are actually quite a lot of filipino youth who are very very detached from the main religion here (catholicism) because of it. i cant speak for the muslim population of the philippines as they tend to live far from where i live, but what i do know is that a ton of us filipino youth have been traumatized from their experiences in catholic schools. like,,, the horror stories you will hear from this place are just sad.
but on the brighter side, lets talk about the casual gender neutrality of filipino culture. we have no gendered pronouns. at its best? the philippines is very liberal with how AMABs and AFABs can present - it's, of course, still shunned upon to dress like the opposite sex, but among the younger generations, its SO common to see AMABs wearing makeup and skirts and heels and AFABs having short, masculine looking haircuts. oh, and the philippine drag scene is absolutely amazing!! if you want an easy gateway into queer Filipino media, ph drag race shows are the way to go
#ph#philippines#phart#writing tips#writing filipinos#inspired by queenie blackthorn's answer to my question abt muslim culture#i figured i should make a lil post about filipino culture! cause its rlly rlly interesting#this is just MY personal list btw#there are so many other aspects to ph culture that should be discussed on the Big Screen TM#but yeah hope this helps anyone with filipino characters!
