Due to this malware using an exe file, we believe that anyone using a Mac or Linux device is completely unaffected by this.

If the exe file was downloaded and executed on your Windows device, it has likely stolen a vast amount of your data and saved passwords from your operating system, your internet browser (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox, and more all affected), Discord, Steam, Telegram, and certain crypto wallets. Thank you to anadius for decompiling the exe.

To quickly check if you have been compromised, press Windows + R on your keyboard to open the Run window. Enter %AppData%/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/UserData in the prompt and hit OK. This will open up the folder the malware was using. If there is a file in this folder called Updater.exe, you have unfortunately fallen victim to the malware. We are unware at this time if the malware has any function which would delete the file at a later time to cover its tracks.

To quickly remove the malware from your computer, Overwolf has put together a cleaner program to deal with it. This program should work even if you downloaded the malware outside of CurseForge. Download SimsVirusCleaner.exe from their github page linked here and run it. Once it has finished, it will give you an output about whether any files have been removed.

Privacy is in a terrible situation right now.

Especially on the internet. You know, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter(X), Apple, and even Tumblr all collect information about you to show you scarily accurate advertisements among other things.

Why does this matter?

This isn't about hiding information, it's about protecting information. You wouldn't let me know your entire life, your diary, all your photos and text messages, so why do you let random companies do the same?

Privacy Guides - Why Privacy Matters

So how do you stop this?

You can't. But you can lessen this. So I'm going to show you a non-exhaustive list of what I've used and what I know of that may help your privacy. I would recommend you go to privacyguides.org after if you want a better explanation. I'm just here to show you cool things.

Disclaimer

I am not a library on this sort of information and this is what I choose to use. I may be incorrect and you may have differing opinions. Also, this may be too extreme for everybody. Use what works for you. Again, I would recommend you go to privacyguides.org after you read this for a more in-depth and better explanation.

VPNs

You know what a VPN is. You've seen the sponsorships. VPNs are one of the most popular privacy tools, but know that they are not the only tool that you'd need. This list is evidence of that.

I would recommend Proton VPN, Mullvad, and IVPN for most users, as they provide a far better amount of privacy and features than VPNs such as Nord VPN, Surfshark, and Express VPN. If you really want unlimited devices go with Windscribe.

I personally use Proton VPN due to the fact that I use their other services.

Browsers

You should probably know that Google Chrome is basically spyware at this point. The issue here is, almost all Chromium-based browsers are. These include, Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi. The only real exception would be Brave, but they've got leadership issues, which may not be a deal breaker for you.

So what do you use? A Firefox-based browser. This obviously includes Firefox, but most Firefox-based browsers are privacy-focused. The browsers that I recommend are Firefox, Librewolf, the Mullvad Browser, Waterfox, and Brave.

There is also the Tor Browser, but that is a whole 'nother can of worms that I will not go into. All I will say is that if you are in a high-risk environment(such as an oppressive regime) or you need absolutely no one to know that you searched that one thing, you may want to use the browser for anonymity.

I use Firefox as my main browser, with Brave as the browser that I use if something doesn't work on Firefox. I also use Tor if it is a high-risk situation.

Search Engines

Google, Bing, and Yahoo! all log your searches, you need alternatives. This is relatively straight-forward.

I recommend, Qwant, DuckDuckGo, SearXNG, Brave Search, and Startpage. Both Qwant and DuckDuckGo are fairly similar as they both use Bing search results and say that they don't track you. SearXNG is more complex, and I will not go into detail here. If you really want Google search results, use Startpage. And if you don't want your search to rely on Bing or Google, use Brave Search.

I use Qwant, mainly just cause its European.

Passwords

Passwords are the keys to your digital life. And most of the time they're not that great. You know the drill here, make passwords like this- XmaE7PEj2hq9ed$w - but you can't really remember them. For that you need a password manager.

I recommend Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and KeepassXC. Bitwarden and Proton Pass are more convenient, but you are trusting a single entity, reputable ones, but still. KeepassXC isn't as convienent, but you have near full control over what happens to it.

I use Proton Pass, as I use other Proton services.

Email

Email is identity, you almost always use your email in order to register for sites like Tumblr, and sites that aren't anything like Tumblr. Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! all use your email inbox in order to gain more information about you for their companies. There are quite a few email providers, but I've only used and recommend two.

I recommend Proton Mail and Tuta Mail. Both are good email providers, although Proton would be better if you use other Proton services, like I do.

I use both Proton Mail and Tuta Mail for separate email addresses.

Aliases

Email Aliases are also very important for private email. Your email is your name, if you want to private, you'd go under pseudonyms. That's what email aliases are.

I recommend and have used Simplelogin and Firefox Relay. Email providers like Proton and Tuta also give you aliases when you pay. I don't know how well these work, but I assume that they work the Same as Simplelogin and Firefox Relay.

I use Simplelogin.

Devices/OSes

Phones

Now let's turn up the extremity to 11 as we look at your devices. Phone-wise, avoid Apple, they say that they care about your privacy, but they don't. Apple is better than Google, but I'd only recommend using an iPhone if you already have one, and it still has support left. If that's the case, then follow privacy guides like this one by Techlore(His channel is also really great for privacy guides). You should probably use a Google Pixel. Sounds weird as it's owned by GOOGLE, one of the companies that we don't want to be tracked by, but if we go with the Pixels we can use custom ROMs.

Most ROMs exist for your privacy, they are based on the Android Open Source Project(AOSP) which means they can run most of your favourite Android apps without messing them up with Google. In order to run most of your apps however, you're going to need some way of running Google Play Services. This is a backbone black-box that Google forces most of your apps to use in order to function. CalyxOS and LineageOS with MicroG both have MicroG, an open source implementation of Google Play Services. GrapheneOS just straight up uses Google Play Services but sandboxes it so that it can't get its tentacles all up in your phone.

I recommend going like this:

You have a modern-ish Google Pixel phone, go with GrapheneOS.

You don't have a Google Pixel, but your phone is still supported by CalyxOS, go with CalyxOS.

Your phone isn't supported by either of these but still is supported by LineageOS with MicroG, go with LineageOS.

Your phone isn't supported by any of these, you can do as much degoogling as you can.

Desktops/Laptops

Apple isn't actually that bad here, its better than Windows at least. But Linux is KING when it comes to privacy and security. There is definitely a learning curve here. Pin the terminal, you're going to use it a LOT. Also be aware that on Linux you won't have every single app that you're used to. If you don't really want that hassle, just go with Mac.

Linux distros that I recommend(for beginners) are: Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, and Elementary OS.

I use Ubuntu as it's the only one that I could get working on my computer.

Other Pieces of Advice

Use an Ad-blocker! Ads are terrible for privacy as companies can get their trackers in completely unrelated sites via their ads. I use and recommend uBlock Origin.

Don't use any personally identifying information online. Don't use your real name, a picture of you, your voice. The less you give to the internet, the more private you are.

Mix and Match! Explore what works for you. You might be okay with changing OSes but you might be a bit too reliant on GMail. That's fine! Just use what works.

Question about browsers

I'm asking this because I think I have developed a use for browsers that is different to the normal person, and I want to see if that's true.

It started on my phone, actually, in which I Firefox (previously Chrome) for ONLY fanfiction, and Safari for everything else. Firefox is in a folder with my Kindle, Books, and Comixology apps.

Then I got two jobs that both use Microsoft (Teams, Sharepoint, etc.), and if I am logged into them both on the same browser they won't let me access ANYTHING because I don't have permission with one of my accounts, even though I do with the other. So I use Edge for one job and Opera for the other.

I use Firefox for my personal browser because of the security features.

I use Chrome for school, because I use Speechify for all of my readings and their web app only works on Chrome. (Speechify my beloved, I would not be capable of grad school without you.)

So I just want to know: is this normal?

Reading this may really save your time, privacy, and money! Reblog or share to spread awareness!

Folks often use software that’s expensive and sometimes even inferior because they don’t know there are alternatives. So to those unfamiliar: basically, free and open-source (FOSS) or "libre" software is free to use and anyone can access the original code to make their own version or work on fixing problems.

That does not mean anyone can randomly add a virus and give it to everyone—any respectable libre project has checks in place to make sure changes to the official version are good! Libre software is typically developed by communities who really care about the quality of the software as a goal in itself.

There are libre alternatives to many well-known programs that do everything an average user needs (find out more under the cut!) for free with no DRM, license keys, or subscriptions.

Using libre software when possible is an easy way to fight against and free yourself from corporate greed while actually being more convenient in many cases! If you need an app to do something, perhaps try searching online for things like:

Some Libre Software I Personally Enjoy…

LibreOffice

LibreOffice is an office suite, much like Microsoft Office. It includes equivalents for apps like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, which can view and edit files created for those apps.

I can't say I've used it much myself yet. I do not personally like using office software except when I have to for school.

OpenShot

OpenShot Video Editor is, as the name suggests, a video editing program. It has industry-standard features like splicing, layering, transitions, and greenscreen.

I've only made one video with it so far, but I'm already very happy with it. I had already paid for a video editor (Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro), but I needed to reinstall it and I didn't remember how. Out of desperation, I searched up "FOSS video editor" and I'm so glad I did. There's no launcher, there's no promotion of other apps and asset packs—it's just a video editor with a normal installer.

GIMP

GNU Image Manipulation Program is an image editor, much like Photoshop. Originally created for Linux but also available for Windows and MacOS, it provides plenty of functionality for editing images. It is a bit unintuitive to learn at first, though.

I've used it to create and modify images for years, including logos, really bad traceover art, and Minecraft textures. It doesn't have certain advanced tech like AI paint-in, but it has served my purposes well and it might just work for yours!

(Be sure to go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Colors. I have no idea why that's not enabled by default.)

Audacity

Audacity is an audio editing program. It can record, load, splice, and layer audio files and apply effects to them.

Audacity is another program I've used for a long time. It is not designed to compose music, but it is great for podcasts, simple edits, and loading legacy MS Paint to hear cool noises.

7-Zip

7-Zip is a file manager and archive tool. It supports many archive types including ZIP, RAR, TAR, and its own format, 7Z. It can view and modify the contents of archives, encrypt and decrypt archives, and all that good stuff.

Personally, I use 7-Zip to look inside JAR files for Minecraft reasons. I must admit that its UI is ugly.

Firefox

Firefox is an internet browser, much like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. While browsers are free, many of them include tracking or other anti-consumer practices. For example, Google plans to release an update to Chromium (the base that most browsers are built from these days) that makes ad blockers less effective by removing the APIs they currently rely on.

Aside from fighting monopolies, benefits include: support for animated themes (the one in the picture is Purple Night Theme), good ad blockers forever, an (albeit hidden) compact UI option (available on about:config), and a cute fox icon.

uBlock Origin

As far as I know, uBlock Origin is one of the best ad blockers there is.

I was on a sketchy website with my brother, and he was using Opera GX's ad blocker. Much of the time when he clicked on anything, it would take us to a random sponsored page. I suggested that he try uBlock Origin, and with uBlock Origin, that didn't happen anymore.

Linux

Linux is a kernel, but the term is often used to refer to operating systems (much like Windows or MacOS) built on it. There are many different Linux-based operating systems (or "distros") to choose from, but apps made for Linux usually work on most popular distros. You can also use many normally Windows-only apps on Linux through compatibility layers like WINE.

I don't have all four of these, so the images are from Wikipedia. I tried to show a variety of Linux distros made for different kinds of users.

If you want to replace your operating system, I recommend being very careful because you can end up breaking things. Many computer manufacturers don't care about supporting Linux, meaning that things may not work (Nvidia graphic cards notoriously have issues on Linux, for example).

Personally, I tried installing Pop!_OS on a laptop, and the sound output mysteriously doesn't work. I may try switching to Arch Linux, since it is extremely customizable and I might be able to experiment until I find a configuration where the audio works.

Many Linux distros offer "Live USB" functionality, which works as both a demo and an installer. You should thoroughly test your distro on a Live USB session before you actually install it to be absolutely sure that everything works. Even if it seems fine, you should probably look into dual-booting with your existing operating system, just in case you need it for some reason.

So there is this device at work. its called an EPD. the name is not important. all you need to know is that it has an IP address 192.168.X.XXX that you need to connect to it in order to get data.

for whatever reason the company that makes it just hasnt updated the UI or interface since 2005 because this thing does NOT work on modern browsers.

well.... it works mostly that is. except for the chart. it can display a realtime graph of Important Data that i need to look at in order to calibrate it. the chart does not work in edge. it does not work in chrome

NOPE! its backed into IE. you gotta go into your internet settings and basically turn off all your security or add the website to your list of trusted websites

my trusted website list is controlled by IT. i cant change it. the weakest settings i can enable still result in the program being halted.

i have apparently generated several dozen automatic support alerts as every time i try and run it it sends a warning to IT that i am accessing a potentially dangerous site

its taken me 2 hours and i have not even started calibration.

i am forced to do the backup method of just blindly assuming everything is working and downloading the CSV file later. this too ends up not working but for reasons i will have to figure out tomorrow. the data is there but the math is wrong.

google chrome: you either started using it due to its popularity or your first device was a chromebook/android phone. you've thought about switching a few times but it sounds like a pain. you don't think about this browser thing much at all

microsoft edge: why should you download something else? it works fine. might've been a bit weird at first, but you've gotten used to it. a browser's a browser.

Loona’s eyes widened as she heard the distant chime of the clock. Her coworkers glanced around with sparse sympathy as they continued their work around the office. 

“Already that time again, huh?” Blitz exclaimed, entering the office and dropping a box. He stretched gruesomely, “Feels like it just happened the other day.” 

Millie shrugged, moving to sit cross-legged on her husband’s desk, “I don’t know, Blitz. Seems like it happened 365 days ago to me.” She laughed half-heartedly. 

Moxxie glanced up from his paperwork to say something, but he noticed the spooked look on Loona’s face. “Loona? Are you alright? You seem like you just saw a human.” 

Blitz hurried over and smothered her in a hug, “MY BABY! What’s wrong?! Tell daddy, daddy’s here!” 

Loona growled lowly but lost the battle with her thoughts and whimpered. “Y/N…” She muttered quietly. She recalled the last time she spoke to her boyfriend. It was admittedly a few days ago when they had fought.

“Loona, please, just listen to me for once!” He pleaded as she stomped away. She didn’t respond, only growling at him. “Loona, please.”

“No! You don’t get to talk to me right now! I’m allowed to be mad at you and I’m allowed to distance myself from you.”

Despite her insistence, he sighed, “Loo, please. I just want to explain myself-”

“EXPLAIN YOURSELF? No! Go away!” 

He trailed after her with a frown,  “Oh come on! I didn’t even do anything! You’re accusing me of shit without anything to prove it. Let me talk!” 

She spun around angrily, glaring at him, “You want to talk? Fine, fucking talk!”

“Loona, I didn’t do anything. It was all innocent, I swear to you. We were studying. She’s struggling in her classes-”

“Bull-fucking-shit.” She rolled her eyes, “I saw the pictures! She fucking kissed you!” 

He looked alarmed for a second, “No! She did not!” He approached her before stopping when he earned a harsh glare. “I promise you, she did not.”

Loona rolled her eyes again, pulling out her phone and showing him a picture. “Oh yeah, then what’s this?”

He stared at it before he scoffed incredulously, “That’s not even me! That’s her boyfriend! We look similar, sure, but we don’t look that much alike!”

Loona glared at him, looking at the photo again. Sure enough, the person in the photo’s hair was longer and he had a (darker/paler) complexion. She gaped for a second before responding, “Okay, sure, it's not you. Fine, I get that. But you were still making moves onto her! Don’t talk to me. I hate you!”

He stared at her in disbelief, “Loo, I cannot believe you right now! What are you even talking about? I wasn’t doing anything except tutoring her! Studying for the exams next week.”

Loona was too far to apologize. She knew she was in the wrong, but her pride didn’t allow her to say anything except turn and stomp off. This time, he didn’t follow.

Her ears flattened against her head as she remembered the last time they spoke. Her soft whine was muffled by her arms as she brought them up to shield her.

“Y/N? Who the FUCK is that?” Blitz cried, “Did they hurt my loony?!” 

Loona’s head snapped up and she looked almost guilty for a second, “NO! No, he is… my boyfriend.”

Blitz’s eyes widened, “Your WHAT? NO, no, no, my little Loony is too young to be dating.” He leaned against a desk, “Oh, fuck, I think I’m going to be faint.”

She growled lightly, but it didn’t last long. “Oh can it, Blitz.” She muttered, leaning her head down to panic slightly. Her eyes welled with tears, a usually foreign sign of her weakness.

“Uh, sir?” Moxxie whispered, “Perhaps now isn’t the best time to talk about that. Maybe you should try to ask her what’s wrong?”

Blitz snapped his fingers, “Right-o, Moxxie!” Blitz leaned down and puckered his lips out, “Aww, what’s wrong, my little Loony?”

Without her normal response of a his or even a snap of her teeth, she responded, “He’s a sinner.”

The word was uttered quietly, almost too quietly to be heard. But Blitz heard it. Of course he did. His eyes widened and his arm went around his daughter’s shoulders, “Oh, Loona, he’ll be fine. You know that.” 

“Do I?” She sounded like she was crying, and she was. “The last time I ever spoke to him, I told him I hated him.” 

Moxxie inched forward, “Uh, well, do you?”

Her snarl came back, “Fuck no.” She stood up, quickly grabbing the chair she was sitting in and throwing it against the wall. “No! Why would I say that? Of course I didn’t fucking mean it! I love him!” 

After a moment of silence, a loud cheer interrupted it. Loona spun around, staring out the window, sinners and imps alike were crowding the streets, celebrating their hell-ridden lives. It was over. 

Without another glance at the trio surrounding her, Loona spun on her paws and rushed to leave. Before she could get far, her shirt collar was grabbed. 

“Nuh-uh. If you’re going on a recon mission, count us in!” Blitz cried, his car keys hanging from his fingers.

“Even if you hate us, you're still family.” Millie added. She glanced at her husband, urging him to say something else supportive.

“Uh, I hope he’s alive?”

Another chair was thrown at the wall. “Damnit Moxxie, you made her mad again!”

In a matter of moments, they were in Blitz’s jeep. “There! Stop there!” Loona pointed at an old decrepit apartment building. Half of the floors were destroyed. 

“Ooh, well, it could look worse.” Moxxie commented.

Loona glanced at him, “It always looks like this.” She growled, getting out of her seat and running to the door. She booked it up the stairs, reaching the third floor in no time. Finding room 3C was easy as it felt like muscle memory. She pounded on the door rapidly.

“Okay, okay, I’m coming!” A familiar voice called. It was Y/N’s roommate. He opened the door and grinned. “Ooh, familiar face, how’ve you been, guapa?”

Without stopping, her eyes darted around, “Is he okay?”

The roommate frowned, “You mean after the purge? Yeah, he’s fine. A little shaken up. It's his first one, after all.” His brows furrowed, “Actually, now that you mention it, he’s been acting the same for the last few days. Did something happen?”

She was quiet for a second before nodding. Instead of elaborating, she moved him aside to enter the apartment. Behind her, she heard Blitz point a gun at the guy. “Wha- Hey! Don’t point that shit at me!”

Ignoring the commotion, she reached her boyfriend’s door. She panicked for a moment. Would he be willing to see her? She carefully knocked on his door.

“Come back later, bro. I told you I didn’t wanna talk.” Relief flooded her heart. So he was okay. She knocked again, pushing open his door. “Bro, I said leave me alone-”

He looked up from his bed and froze. It took him a second but he turned his gaze away. Loona felt her paw tremble. “Y/N?” She mumbled, “I wanted to come make sure you were okay.”

He nodded awkwardly, “Oh, uh, yeah. That- That sounds like you.” It was quiet for a moment before he spoke again. “Well, you saw that I’m fine. You can leave now if you want.”

“Do you want me to go?”

Another moment. “No.”

She stalked towards him. “I-” She hesitated. “I’m sorry.” Her eyes watered. “I didn’t mean anything I said. I was just so pissed off that she sent those photos to me, claiming they were you. I love you. I never want to hurt you.”

He nodded carefully. “Well. You did hurt me. A lot. But, I should apologize too.” He glanced up, “I shouldn’t have said some of the things I said. I wasn’t trying to patronize or be manipulative.”

“I don’t hate you.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want you to leave me.”

“I know.”

Microsoft reportedly confirmed the authenticity of the pop-up in statements to latest Windows and The edge, shamefully presenting the measure as an opportunity for users. “This is a one-time notification that gives people the option to set Bing as their default search engine in Chrome,” a company representative wrote.

The product so good that they use unblockable pop-up ads that fuck with your browser settings to make you use it. Fuck you, Microsoft.
