dragon age ii game of all time. everyone’s so bisexual and so mean to each other. kirkwall is the worst place to live in the world for the widest variety of people. the maps are so repetitive. no consequences for being mean as fuck to templars. a guy calls you an opponent worthy of a duel then you can run around and use dirty tactics when fighting him. theres a grenade you can throw at the ground to bring ppl back to life. second game in the series to allow a threesome with two of the same characters. you get to wholeheartedly support blowing up the chantry. the whole thing’s framed as a story one character is telling obviously with his own embellishments. im not calling you a liar as the credits song. like really and truly no other game does it like this one does

Alright folks I gotta say a few things

I played a big chunk of Dragon Age Origins, I played almost all of Inquisition. I did not finish either game - origins because my save data got corrupted and I was going to throw up if I had to look at the fade again, and Inquisition because I wasn't gripped by it. I bought Veilguard cause I thought the combat looked fun and I wanted to formulate my own opinion on the game.

I did not expect to be straight up blorbopilled by Emmrich Volkarin. And yet.

I spent at least a month and a half having an existential crisis because I was compelled enough to write fic. My friends and my therapist can tell you I was losing it over "cheating on my fandom" which isn't even a real thing but I feel overwhelming guilt anyway. I've been invested in Mass Effect almost exclusively since 2012 - even though I took a huge break around 2015-2020, I never sought out or write fic about any other fandom. This feels like a huge shift for me.

And after much whinging, I've decided I should just enjoy the fun blorbo feelings and do my best to roll with it.

This is all to say that I apologize for the disruption in my regularly scheduled Mass Effect blogage. I know there are a lot of folks who adore both games, but there are also folks who don't care for DA at all.

I'll be tagging all future Dragon Age posts as "da" because I want people to be able to block those posts if they want to, but I don't want all my posts to get dumped into the Dragon Age tag.

I wouldn't say I'm done writing Mass Effect fic. I have 2-3 wips that I really want to finish, one is another shrios post-war hurt/comfort fic, one is a smutty shakarian wip (I have guilt about that one too tbh like "I don't even go here, what right do I have to write Garrus" but fuck it we ball). The last one is my precious, aspirational December Shepard fic that will likely never get finished but I'm probably going to post segments of anyway because I've worked so hard to build her and I have to honor that journey.

I'm likely to spawn additional wips along the way, as writers are known to do. But currently those other wiplings are Emmrich related lmao 😵‍💫

01.     this is an independent, selective, and private writing blog. my portrayal will primarily mirror canon, but i will also implement headcanon as i see fit. i am not an expert in dragon age and its lore. what alterations i make are made are largely up to my own discretion, interpretation, and comfort with certain themes present in certain characters’ stories. if these changes at all bother you, i understand. do what you need to do to ensure your safety and well-being!

02.     this blog will only interact with muns over the age of 20. as i am 25+ years of age, i prefer not to interact with anyone younger than this. minors who follow this blog will be blocked on sight. if i find out you have lied about your age to gain access to this blog, i will also block you. NO EXCEPTIONS. not only is it potentially illegal, but it’s immoral and inappropriate.

           on the topic of mature themes, i heavily prefer FADE TO BLACK in the case of smut. i enjoy banter, but excessive sexual content sometimes makes me uncofortable. i may author smut in detail if it is critical to the development of a plot or dynamic, but otherwise you can expect me to skip to the aftermath.

03.     triggers of all kinds will be present on this blog. while i will always do my best to tag them, i may miss them from time to time. i deeply apologize if this occurs, but please just give me a gentle nudge and i will be sure to rectify it immediately! trigger tags will be formatted as following:

04.     this is the generic mun =/= muse rule. i am not the muses i write, nor do i always condone their actions, attitudes, or beliefs. the world these characters live in can oftentimes be just as cutthroat and cruel as our own. particular versions of these muses may be manipulative, crude, and at times straight up unlikable. if any aspect makes you uncomfortable, please feel free to block and move on. again, your comfort and well-being is paramount, and there will be no hurt feelings here for that.

           that being said, there are several themes i will NEVER write in graphic detail, though there may be instances where they become part of my muse's backstory. these include but are not limited to: any type of sexual assault or aggression; any form of abuse; excessive gore/torture; discrimination of any type.

05.     i am easy to interact with. crossovers, ocs, and duplicates are welcome! asks are my preferred way to start interactions. it is encouraged to make ask replies threads on this blog; please just do your best to move it to a fresh post! i do lightly format my posts, with slight bold / italicizing and colored text for emphasis. please let me know if this disrupts your ability to read our threads and i will happily adjust this! i am also always more than happy to plot. my discord is available to mutuals upon request, either for plotting, writing, or just sharing our love for common interests!

06.     full disclosure: i know very little about dragon age and its lore. veilguard has become something of a fixed special interest over the past several weeks or so as well, so i’m still learning and figuring it all out! you are welcome to link me to information you think i might find pertinent or infodump about the wider universe. but please, do not tell me how i should or should not write my muses. i’m here for a good time and will write the way that makes me happiest, and give everyone in my space the same respect. attempting to tell me how to write my muses is grounds for a block.

07.     i love ships. ships of all kinds. let all the ships sail. besties, friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, slowburn, soul mates, hateships, mortal enemies … give them all. that said, this is not a space for ship wars or unnecessary, unfounded hate for ships (i.e. hating a canon ship because it gets in the way of your headcanon ship). please save that for your like-minded friends.

I've seen many posts about people missing how common asks used to be so I have been trying to send about an ask a week. Now I send this ask first anytime I follow someone as I really don't want to bother anyone, so I'd love to know if you enjoy receiving asks and if so what kind of asks. Not having energy for asks or being comfortable with them is perfectly okay.

Oh, hi!! Well, firstly, thanks for the follow!!! Secondly, I love asks! I (unfortunately) don't always get to certain things (because life and,,,life lmao!) but I do love getting them, and I really want to make the effort to get back to engaging so! Here's the info for your notebook!

Self, Job/Work: Just ask! I usually prefer to keep vague on some things, mostly because I like to keep "professional" socials separate from my fandom ones lol and would prefer there not being a direct connection. But for the most part, I'm flexible on talking about myself :)

Bagginshield/Tolkien YES YES YES UGHHHH I adore all of that. I peeped your profile and saw some Gimli and Legolas I think which is also mi amor <3 Elsewise, I'm all over the place, but do post Supernatural, Good Omens, and Baldur's Gate (i've bought all the Dragon Ages and that's next on my list) with hyperfixations sorting as often as they can. (You can check out my AO3 to see some of my favorites [CBlue], or most often I try tagging fandoms if you need to block anything or want to hunt for something specific. (I'm also stumbling back into some Geraskier too on ocassion!)

I don't have OCs that I post here (they tend to be more on my professional one lol), and my art tag changed because tumblr ate the previous one I'd been using (sometimes its #my art and sometimes its #C Draws or #C Arts), so that's a bit everywhere and not often. I more often post my fandom writings [CBlue on AO3, which if I may pimp out a writing of mine, I wrote Compression, a Bagginshield fic (though, apologies as due to recent AI scalping all of my works are now locked to registered-users exclusively]. This is my everything blog, so everything goes here lol.

Oh my god please send me snippet ideas and prompts. That's one of my favorite ways of engage---spinning with people! That's why I LOVE participating in fandom! I get some of that outlet on a few of the (more intimate) fandom Discords that I'm in, but I'm always open to some of those from asks and such too!!

Pets: I have 6 cats, all of whom are rescues. To the point that the last three were actually rescued out of my wood pile from a storm that was going to hit last year. I don't post pictures of them (mostly to keep that fandom life separation like I mentioned), but I talk about them! People who know me probably also might remember my old man, Tucker, who was the loveliest of puppers. I had to say goodbye to him earlier this year (back in April, and it's just been...a time since then. I miss him often, but every memory is nothing but fondness.) They're all so lovely, and I love talking pets! (If, you know, six cats wasn't an indication ;))

I don't have a garden at the moment, but I do love talking about it!! Hobbies tend to be my fandom hobbies, but I'm also trying to get back into reading more often and I have a few crafts planned. And I love doing a gamer when I can in my free time.

I don't always get to them because I am the toxic person (/j) who sees a notification and goes "I will respond when I'm able to," but when the notification is gone I forget all about it. I wasn't going to post this because I don't like drama, but I see this person is still active in this fandom. This is the second in a relatively recent spree of people who feel entitled to engagement and attention from fanfic writers whose work they read.

A user I've never engaged with prior to this named te-amozevris replied to an older post of mine where I'd mentioned a Castlevania: Nocturne fic I was (back then) writing, You reluctant demon. They asked where to read it, because they liked Olrox. I linked them the fic. They then left comments on said fic as they read under the name Reinamarieseregon. I do appreciate when folks read my fics and leave comments, so in theory that wasn't bad. One comment was actually about another person's fic in the fandom they were reading (which I'd never referenced, and was not reading), and then they moved onto saying they wrote Dragon Age fics, for no reason I can really understand. They asked, "Do u know about the fandom?"

Given at that point I'd published four fics for DA going back to 2018 and had DA fics in my public bookmarks, yes, I know the fandom. So I was bit confused why they were 1. asking me about an unrelated fandom, and 2. asking me something they could have very easily checked themselves, particularly given they're an author on Ao3 and should know how it works. They'd even (allegedly) read another of my fics in the same fandom, a fic which was published after YRD was first published because I was inspired to write it while planning YRD. I have no record of them kudos'ing or commenting on that one, so it's their word they did that, and I'm not sure about trusting their word, but well.

They explained, "Ooh u do write DA as well. I meant would you u like to check out some of mine?" I was again confused by this, as this has never happened to me (I've had strangers offer me prompts unasked, ask to be my writing partner, and send me gift fics when I don't know them, but no one to my recollection asked me, unprompted, to read their fics from a different fandom in my fic comment section). I was also again confused what this had to do with a Castlevania fic that had nothing to do with DA, and where DA had never come up in any conversation.

For the record, I did look at their profile before I responded to see if any of their fics sounded like something I'd be into. They weren't, at least not from what I saw. It's a big fandom. Not everyone is going to be into every single fic.

So I replied about my confusion with this whole conversation and apologized because I was not into their fics. I didn't list criticism of their fics. I just said I wasn't interested.

They then got offended, saying I wasn't being "nice" because they were so giving about coming to my fics and being so gracious as to leave "nice comments" (they left comments, but it's debatable if they were "nice"). I get wanting someone whose work you like to read your work, too (I've experienced it myself, and I get how crushing it feels when they don't), but expecting it as an obligation? From a complete stranger? No. That's not how that works. I didn't seek this person out to get them to read my work in some kind of exchange. I posted in a fandom tag and they stumbled on it.

They then acted like I was making "comment rules" by... explaining that I was confused why a stranger was asking me to read fics about a completely different fandom for no reason in my fic comments section. Further, they were disappointed in me for... you know I'm not honestly sure. Whatever the case, they blocked me on Ao3 before I replied, and then went back to my tumblr post to be nasty and say I wasn't "open-minded", whatever that means. Blocking is their right and contrary to their profile page, which reads, "the block button shld only be agst trolls, not coz ppl dw to ans", I'm glad they set a boundary where they wanted one.

But if you see this person being weird in your replies or comments, maybe just block them before you get into it. No one needs assholes trying to force you to read their fics and arguing you're being mean for refusing. And people can use their block buttons however the fuck they want.

Also since they blocked me after leaving this little screed:

Theres no strict rules abt comments, other than not to be rude, or flaming. So if ppl comment in yr DA fics then u accept it? I wasn expecting alot but this is disappointing."

Ao3 is not social media. Plenty of people make recommendations in fanfic comments, and I have before, and been asked for recs, but I don't offer recommendations in comments without being asked first, and I don't fic beg. I also, unless prompted, try to stay relevant to the fanfic in comments, and asking me about an unrelated fandom that's never come up after repeatedly demonstrating you are incapable of doing anything on your own - browsing my Ao3 for the original fic you asked for being among them, which was and still is the top fic in the fandom tag - and leaving a series of incredibly weird comments is weird. And explaining why you brought it up costs you nothing, because the only reason it seems to have been brought up is to get me to read your fics, complete stranger.

I'm also not sure why this person considers "nice" comments to be "payment" for me to read their works. That is not how anything works. I wrote the fic they read, and appreciate appreciation for said fic. Nice comments do not buy you entitlement to my time or eyeballs.

I also was not saying there are "Strict rules abt comments" anywhere. I was confused because this was completely random and had nothing to do with the fic they were talking about, and this whole line of reasoning started with them commenting on chapter 3/12: "Another olrox fic i'm following is [other fic] lol :33 For me i write DA dragonage fics! Do u know about the fandom?" Which I answered, because yes, I knew about the fandom. To which they replied, "Ooh u do write DA as well. I meant would u like to check out some of mine? ;) when u are free"

At this point, I didn't even know if they liked the chapter they were reading. Quite frankly, and I feel like this should be obvious, I didn't write a Castlevania fic to entice people writing in the DA fandom to come in and ask if I could read their DA fics. I've been in the DA fandom for years. I love plenty of fics in that fandom and plan to write and read more. That this person has no clue why this entire line of reasoning - addressed to a complete stranger on a non social media site, unprompted - is weird, is bizarre.

(Though honey, there actually are "strict" rules for comments, particularly about harassment and spam, so maybe you should check the site rules sometime!)

I'd have still said no, complete stranger, but I wouldn't have been as confused why you were asking, especially if you'd commented on my Fenris/fem!Hawke/Isabela fic, which seems more relevant to your interests. Still weird to ask a stranger to read your fics unprompted in a person's fic comment section, but at least it's the right fandom and vaguely shared niche of said fandom.

I told you how to use Ao3. I was patient and polite, far more than you honestly deserved, as you repeatedly demonstrated you hadn't read the fic you were commenting on. At every turn, this person asked me to perform extra labor for them, seemed confused at the suggestion they do anything themselves, and then angry when they were refused.

HI!!! Welcome! I'm quite the nervous wreck sometimes, so I apologize ahead of time if your interactions with me are awkward. I have autism, ADHD, and depression, which can be hard to deal with, and is also often the reason why I am slow on making things. And also why I am so passionate about everything I do. I got into MOTHER around July of 2019 when I was 15. It has brought out a lot of joy into me and has shaped the way that I am today! I've been creating content for MOTHER since August 2019, but most of it is private and archived. I have gone under multiple aliases, but Tanehineri is the one that has stuck and resonated the most, being the Japanese name for Tanetane island. The 'j' in my name is actually supposed to be pronounced the way you would a 'j' in Spanish, actually!

While MOTHER is no longer a main interest, I am not afraid to say it's my special interest! Whenever I am running out of things to think or create about, the series is there to give me something to occupy my time. I have multiple takes and headcanons, and I'm always open to hear and share my interpretations of these games with other people, so don't be afraid to ask me for my takes on certain aspects!

‿❀°. do you use *ai?: yes, i do. i think if it's used appropriately, it can be a great support tool. anything *ai generated will be marked accordingly. i will always be transparent about my use of *ai.

You’re wrong about basically all off this. Anders doesn’t become an abomination at all. Except in a hard rival route, and even then. Complicated. He’s never not himself except in a rival pass where Justice begins to take him over. He only does this in the first place though, if Anders is guilted and shamed by the PC in addition to the party, and treated like he’s an abomination and in the wrong fighting for mage rights, to the point he doubts it himself. At which point Justice is forced to choose between hurting Anders, and letting innocents suffer through inaction, with no possible third option, both of which are intrinsically against his nature as a spirit. And what happens to him is what happens to any spirit forced to act entirely against their nature: he begins to become a demon. That is the only path this happens on. He isn’t angry because his results are failing. He is angry and unstable, despite what even Anders himself believes, not because of Anders’ anger either. It’s because Anders’ fear of himself, drilled in by the chantry, and guilt, from years of being told he’s inherently bad and dangerous, and will go out of control and hurt others, and his terror that his own actions, if forceful, must be bad. The inner conflict of how he sees Justice as it can pertain to himself, is what makes Justice sick. He’s volatile and reactive, because he’s constantly having his entire being and nature under attack by all of Anders’ friends, excepting determinately Bethany and Hawke, and even to a degree, albeit unintentionally, Anders himself. He becomes volatile to having his very being challenged, which is why he almost attacks someone he’s trying to protect. Emotion. It’s not some petty short-sightedness or inability to think though complex topics and long term goals. This is backed up clearly in-game by Anders and Justice reaching stability and cohesion if by Act III, Anders overcomes his fears about action and himself, and his ideas of Justice. Justice stops being volatile and unwell, and they work together fine, once his existence isn’t constantly challenged. There’s no lack of nuance. He just lost it, because he was under enormous strain. Also, he’s a fuckin he. Not an it. It’s thoroughly baseless to suggest spirits have no concept of nuance. Justice didn’t pick mage rights because he heard about them first. There’s people offering opposing views in the moment in Awakening. He’s a thinking, sentient person. Not a computer code. He chose to champion humans in the Fade on his own; he chose to try to make right with the widow; he argues with people in awakening including the MC if he disagrees, and he can be reasoned with, but not controlled. He’s a person.Yes, he’s different. He asks the Warden in Awakening why mortals fight when they have more in common than different, and should get along, and you tell him it should work that way, yes, but he finishes for you that it does not in practice, and is not that simple. He’s smart. He can learn and grow and does in Awakening, and does in DA2. All of that is canon backed, ironclad.

Your only reason for why the Aavar are different is a headcanon. It’s just as logical to suggest they easily pull it off because they’re the only ones who treat spirits like people. Also, Rivaini people do as well. And even Orlais used to; the first Inquisitor was exactly what Anders is. So it has /more/ factual in-text basis. Of course radicalism can go too far. But the republicans are the majority, and for every Mao’s Revolution, there’s four Nigerian Civil Wars. You can’t say it’s too risky to revolt, because you might go too far, and apply it like a rule. It isn’t always right and isn’t always pretty; obviously. But it’s worse to say people should just be an oppressed minority forever just in case, or never use force. That’s bullshit. And BioWare /are/ cowards. Anders killed like 3 dozen people and started a fight not for the purpose of a fight, but because Justinia was about to invoke an Exalted March, and Meredith has already called for the right of annulment by halfway through Act III. He pulled the switch on a trolley problem to give Mages in Kirkwall a chance to fight while enough lived to make it, and to try to push Mages beyond them to finally fight back and change their system (and succeeded marvelously), and even such a /small/ cost in lives numerically for an unarguable greater good, immediately submits to execution if demanded to pay the toll. That’s no fucking French Revolution, and it’s ridiculous in the worst form to accuse it of such. The devs are /terrible/ ethically. In the same game the most positive thing any character says of Anders choosing to enact minority violence against oppressors is that he ‘is both monster and hero,’ and he’s spoken of as awful by every other character, they drop Solas being awake for a year before deciding Dalish culture isn’t worth preserving and every other culture on the planet is lesser than his old one and nuking the planet and committing special genocide to everyone else in Thedas for Elf Supremacy (but not the indigenous based culture—the new secret former European Decadence Slaver Elf culture) to be resumed as the one true supreme and every other race die. And frame that as a sympathetic motive to a degree your last act can be choosing to dedicate the ENTIRE NEXT GAME to bringing him back into the fold. It’s not okay to kill 40 people and start a conflict to try and save lives, but when an Intellectual DudeBro decides supremacist genocide is the only answer, it’s soooo sad and he gets a whole game to trying to save him if you want.

They spend inquistion retconning the godhood of the gods of every culture but the Fantasy Catholic Church, so at the end of the game the only paths forward are Christian God is real but no one else, or Atheism is True, BOTH of which are European ‘white people are right’ schools of thought and it’s grosser when they’ve blatantly based the other cultures off Romani, Sámi, and other indigenous peoples. They’re huge cowards with the worst ethics on the damn planet! We go from Origins where you can tell Leliana if you’re an elf, and she suggests being a sought after servant in rich French society as a status symbol for them is a good life and better than slum freedom in the Alienages, that that’s like being a pet, and even though she’s nice, she thinks of elves differently, and GAIN affinity from her for challenging her and giving her a chance to grow, to never making Dorian have any in-game change about being pro-slavery and having the last word be him arguing why it’s just as fine as being poor. We go from the Qunari, a culture blatantly somehow both based on middle eastern and Chinese cultures, having Sten as the rep and have him never waver in is socioreligion, and the character be able to go back to Par Vollen with him. To Bull, who literally has to be murdered by you if you don’t deconvert him from being part of the Qun, because he’ll try to kill you regardless of affinity. While making it more and more blatantly obvious what culture his is based off of by adding details like the Qunari practice halal or kosher! They retcon the elves as an established oppressed minority who have lived in reservations that where then taken from them and been enslaved and almost wiped off the map, easily obviously based on several indigenous cultures, and retcon their entire history so they’re actually not victims of colonization, but from an opulent slaver empire, to push a neo liberal centrist ‘all cultures are just as bad as each other’ bullshit narrative that CAN only even be played with all devil’s advocate thought exercise in the first place, by people coming FROM a place of extreme privilege, safety, and power. Fuck the devs.

Like. The Hero of Fereldan back in DAO told Wynne “If one retains their humanity, they are not an abomination,” first game of the series. But the players and devs have lost so much of what was good about the series since then, most people don’t even seem to remember there has been a very simple, accepted answer from the start.

So... is no Cullenmancer going to even bring up what his Voice Actor has been doing on twitter... just blindly reblogging Cullen art all day... no thought to anything else. Gotta keep the fandom positive.... GOTTA KEEP THE FANDOM POSITIVE... I am really starting to open my eyes to just how toxic this intense need to maintain fandom positivity is. Particularly when one of the actors in the series is really doing some problematic shit at the worst possible time.

Okay... next time the POC in the fandom call white cullen fans on our bullshit... don’t be surprised if I am not on the side you expect me to be... cuz one thing I learned this week is Silence...standing by… is just as bad as saying something hateful and hurtful… so yeah… i said something….

and here is a concept... we hold the people who voice these characters to the same level of acountablity we hold our own fandom too... radical idea... I know...

Just wanted to say that I saw your post about Blond Boy Romance discourse and wanted to thank you for such a succinct write-up about Anders. I got into the fandom in late 2019 and i was SO confused about this huge gap in art and fic. Like, dead links and missing blogs and deleted posts. And I couldn’t figure out what happened because no one was talking about it, and I’m very shy after a mess in my last fandom. So...yeah. Thank you for writing that up, it’s nice to finally know what happened even though it’s really depressing. Also, thanks for staying in this fandom. You’re a wonderful example to others and an amazing creator.

Hello wanderingnork, and a very belated welcome to the fandom! 🙌🏾 Well. Welcome to what’s left of the fandom anyway LOL ❤️ 

Thanks so much for reaching out and sending me this really kind ask message (the post being referred to is my addition/reblog here) but yeah, I guess for those who weren’t in Dragon Age 2 fandom or the Anders side of fandom between December 2017—July 2018 you wouldn’t have seen how horrifying the bullying got. I’ve seen at least 3 people who aren’t friends with me reblog my post saying that what I described was why they themselves quit DA fandom or the Anders side of fandom too. 

And those are the Anders fans who DIDN’T delete their Tumblr blogs. Obviously the ones who DID delete and/or quit aren’t here to confirm that they, too, quit over that Anders wank in 2018. 

The worst of it was that the wank was started entirely by a group of Anders fans who – to my knowledge – still see themselves as the real victims to this day, even though they only stopped their callout posts and bullying (both in public and behind the scenes in private) when they learned that the Anders fanartist they were bullying was considering taking legal action. (You KNOW things are bad when fandom wank gets so bad that it becomes actual harassment that breaks the law.) And like I said, they posted some pretty shitty things about those of us who were friends with this artist too, causing many of us to block them. 

They backtracked like fuck in July 2018, but after seven months (maybe more?) of constantly bullying this one popular Anders fanartist (who’d repeatedly apologised, deleted the NSFW sideblog AND the offending art, and posted how the whole thing had driven that artist to a breakdown and suicidal thoughts), maybe it should never have got that far?

I don’t know how active they are in DA fandom now – but I DO know one of them notoriously posted that us blocking them was “bullying”, and that “bullying is child abuse” for “children” like themselves... despite the fact that they admitted they were 23 and therefore were very much not a fucking minor or child. (They had a lot to say about how WE should have been responsible for their “online safety” as well, and that Anders was their “comfort character” whom they only wanted to see sweet fluff content for, and they regularly triggered themselves by searching out Anders content that was less than fluffy or sweet to complain about on their blog. Not to mention how many of us queer POC Anders creators in our 20s and 30s – including the Anders artist they bullied – were accused of being “white” and “boomer-passing” for defending Anders content they didn’t like LMAO)

I’m so sorry to hear about the huge gap in art and fic you experienced on coming in to Tumblr Dragon Age fandom, but given how many creators took one look at the bullying and thought “fuck this, I’m leaving” and either deleted their blogs or Anders posts/fic/art/meta or simply left for kink-friendlier fandoms, I am honestly not surprised to hear this. I am also sorry to hear that there was a mess in your last fandom too; and I hope that this fandom is better to you. 

Dragon Age fandom is a difficult fandom to be in, but trust me when I say there are lots of good people in it. They’re just harder to find, and often they’re not as prominent or in-your-face as the nastier types. But I know they’re there because I’ve found them, and I treasure them, and I’ve been here since 2014. 

I think really all we can do is block the haters as much as possible, and carry on creating whatever the fuck we like – and tagging appropriately. I learned my lesson from that wank in 2018: if someone(s) is really determined to destroy you and just wants you gone, there is no apology or deletion you can give that will be good enough. Besides, there are so many problematic themes and content in Dragon Age canon that I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask creators to completely shy away from exploring those if they want to, or from making OCs that mirror a canon character’s traumatic background, or from writing/drawing canon characters as anything less than healthy and wholesome and pure (which NONE of them are in canon, anyway) – especially if it’s tagged and warned for. 

I mean... we all paid Bioware to purchase and play this 18+ game with its uncomfortable, difficult and sometimes problematic themes and content. I feel that if the Dragon Age franchise was so terrible and traumatic and problematic for someone when playing, then I do question why they joined the fandom afterwards. And I don’t think the onus should fall solely on fandom creators – who are doing this for free, unpaid, in our spare times – to create perfect, unproblematic, wholesome content that just wasn’t in the games themselves. Different people have different definitions of what is “perfect”, “unproblematic” or “wholesome” anyway. 

(On that last point: look at how the people behind The Mess callout tried to accuse people of being racist for romancing Cullen with pale-skinned Lavellans; back in 2016/2017 you got accused of being racist for romancing Cullen with darker-skinned Lavellans. How times have changed 🤔  There’s a LOT of content in this fandom that I don’t like, or that squicks/repulses me, but as long as it’s tagged in a way that I can avoid it, I’m not gonna police what people create. And if there’s one thing I’ve noticed the Dragon Age fandom IS very good about doing, it’s that most people are careful about handling problematic topics and content in a sensitive way. So that’s not a thing I worry about.) 

Anyway. I’m rambling. But yeah, that recap of 2018 (which several people have confirmed is true now) sums up why there is such a huge gap in Anders fanart and fic, and is why very few people create Anders content anymore – I know I myself abandoned a Garrett Hawke/Anders longfic in 2018 because I didn’t want to create for Handers fans if the only ones around were bullies who believed they were victims. But it’s been well over 2 years now, so.... I might get back to writing that fic. The Gym AU is still very much alive in my brain 👀 

So! That’s what happened... but despite everything I want to emphasise that there IS much good in this fandom, even if it’s harder to find among all the shit there is 💩 and that I hope your stay here is a good one. Thank you so much for saying you think I’m a wonderful example to others and an amazing creator, though! ❤️ I don’t know how many people will agree, but I do try! 

But yeah, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from being here since 2014 – and from surviving several attempts to run me out of fandom (including for having an elf/human OTP) and off this platform – it’s this: The people change, and the characters and subjects being wanked over change, but fandom wank itself never ever changes.

Renaissance Faire

Ian and Barley take their little sister Judy to the Renaissance Faire.  In the midsts of having a good time, Barley helps Ian figure things out at a clothing bazaar.

Tried to get a good balance with Ian, as he’s just discovering some things about himself, but is afraid he’ll get teased for it.  It was a little trickier this time around, but I think I kept it in character and away from being offensive.  If I do offend, I apologize.

It was a mild Saturday afternoon in autumn.  Colt had to work and Laurel wanted to rest, so the Lightfoot brothers were responsible with babysitting their five year old elftaur sister Judith.  Since it’s the season, and it just opened this weekend, Ian and Barley decided to bring Judy along to the Renaissance Faire.  The brothers have been going together since their quest, but now Judy can tag along and enjoy it with them.  Barley was dressed in his adventurer outfit, Ian was wearing his normal everyday clothes and carrying his wizard staff, and Judy was dressed in her green Princess Kenna dress from Pretty Pretty Centaurs.

Even with watching a five year old and having to enjoy more of the kiddie things, the day started out great.  They went to the stables to see the dragons and griffins, Judy even got to pet one. They saw blacksmiths, glassblowers, leather workers, and weavers.  They got to see an actual joust, but had to leave early when one of the jousters fell off his dragon steed and Judy got scared.  After a quick lunch at the food court, the trio ran into a few wandering performers, one claiming he was doing “magic” when it was really simple tricks.  It was when Judy proclaimed that his big brother Ian was a wizard too that Ian sheepishly showed off a few spells of his own, really wowing the crowd with actual magic.  Ian felt just as embarrassed as the pouting performer.  He didn’t mean to upstage the guy, but Barley and Judy did so much encouraging that it was drawing a crowd, and it got pretty awkward.

The brothers were on their way to the arts and crafts section when Judy caught sight of something and ran into the bazaar, with Ian and Barley chasing after her.  They checked a shop or two when Barley found Judy in a tent selling clothing and jewelry and called Ian over.  Ian caught up to catch the little elftaur happily fawning over an adult sized princess dress so extravagant and expensive that it was displayed under glass.

“It’s so pretty!  I want it!” Judy exclaimed.

“I’m afraid that’s a little out of our price range,” Barley admitted.

Judy pouted, stomping her hoof into the ground.  “I want it!”

“It’s too big for you,” Ian said, hoping that truth will end her tantrum.

Judy finally realized this and her face fell.  Her elf ears perked up, she looked at the dress and then back at Ian.  “I bet Iandelle would look pretty in it.”

Ian’s eyes grew wide, he gripped his staff with both hands as he quickly darted around the tent, seeing if anyone he knew was in there.  Just a cyclops dressed in medieval commoner clothes at the register, and he wasn’t paying much attention.  It’s not like the cyclops knew Ian’s little identity anyhow, but he didn’t want anyone outside of the family to put the pieces together and realize that he spends his play time with Judy in an actual dress.

Barley could catch Ian’s fears and told Judy.  “I’m sure she would, Judy.  Why don’t you go to the children’s clothes over there?  We’ll be over here.”

Judy trotted off to the racks of children’s costumes as Ian and Barley made their way to the men’s costume section.  As they ducked between two racks, Ian gave a shaking sigh of relief.

“You know,” Barley commented in a quiet voice, “you really gotta calm down.  It’s cute how you do girly stuff with Judy.”

“I don’t want people to know about that,” Ian replied back in a hushed tone.

“Who cares?” Barley shrugged.

“I do!” Ian looked over the racks, the cashier was still bored and Judy was fiddling with some play dresses.  Ian pretended to leaf through some of the male costumes, and Barley followed suit.  “Do you have any idea what would happen if someone found out?  My social life would be over.”

“As much as I hate to admit it, Ian, it’s not the dark ages,” Barley said.  “It’s modern day.  Times have changed.  Guys can wear dresses.”

“I have a bad enough time with some people treating my crap as it is,” Ian debated.  “If word got out that I spend some time at home in dresses and stockings-“

“Ian,” Barley commented sternly.  “You’re acting a little transphobic.”

Ian stammered, trying to explain what he meant by that.  “I- I’m no- I mean-“  Losing focus of where he was, Ian accidentally walked into a mannequin, knocking it over, along with himself, to the ground.

That got the cyclops’s attention.  “Hey!” The cyclops started storming over there. Ian panicked, grabbed a random piece of clothing off a nearby rack and covered his feet up to his calves with it. “You better not be stealing anything in here!” the cyclops snapped as he approached the two.

“I’m okay,” Ian replied sourly, realizing the cyclops was worried if they were thieves rather than if Ian was hurt.

“And watch your damn kid! I’m not a babysitter!”  The cyclops turned and stormed back to his post.

“Language!  She’s five!” Barley shouted back.

Ian sighed, then tensed up as he felt Barley tug the piece of clothing off his legs.  “No no, I got it,” he stammered, reaching for the tunic.

Barley completely pulled it away, revealing Ian’s lower legs.  Ian was wearing his usual denim jeans and blue sneakers, but in his sitting position his pant legs pulled up a bit, revealing the white stockings underneath. They were white and plain, so they looked like socks when they completely covered Ian’s legs, but when his ankles were exposed, it was pretty obvious.

“Dude.”  Barley looked up at Ian.

“I- I was out of socks,” Ian lied.  Barley gave a look, he clearly knew Ian was lying.  Ian sighed, crossing his arms, resting them on his knees.  “I use my regular voice when I’m ‘Iandelle,’” he quietly admitted, so quiet only Barley could hear.  “I don’t even like wearing the dress.  But… I like the feel of the stockings… and lately I’ve been enjoying how good the lipstick looks on me, and…”  Ian sighed. “… I don’t know what I am.”

Barley paused after Ian confessed to him.  He placed a comforting hand on Ian’s shoulder.  “Hey.  You’re Ian.”

“But I don’t know who I am,” Ian repeated.

“You just told me,” Barley replied.  “You’re a guy who likes some girly stuff.”

“But what if someone finds out?”

“Who cares?”

“I do!” Ian quietly shouted, frustrated with the whole situation as he rubbed his head with the heels of his palms.

Barley sat up on his heels, thinking for a moment.  He then got an idea, jumped up onto his feet and walked away.  Ian was left alone for a moment, wiping a frustrating tear from his eye before climbing up on his feet.  He placed the mannequin back upright and brushed the dirt and grass off of its outfit, as the floor is just the ground of the field that the faire sets their tents up every year.  He turned around and jumped back to see Barley inches from his face.  Barley was grinning from pointy ear to ear, like he had something he couldn’t wait to show Ian.  “… what?”

Barley revealed what he had behind his back.  On a simple hanger was a green plaid fabric.

Ian was confused.  “A skirt?”

“A kilt,” Barley explained.

“A kilt?” Ian was more confused.

“You never heard of a kilt before?” Barley asked, surprised.  “Guys wear them.”

“So even though I don’t like princess dresses,” Ian replied, still confused, “you gave me a skirt.”

Barley rolled his eyes. “I’m trying to show you that guys wear ‘girly’ stuff too.  In the olden days, guys would wear these.  In some kingdoms, it was traditional.  Soldiers would wear them.  Hell, I think in one kingdom, only guys could wear them.”

Ian was eyeing the kilt again, only less oddly.  “Huh.”

Barley shoved the clothing into Ian’s arm.  “Just try it on.”

“How?” Ian asked.

Barley pointed behind Ian. In the corner was an area blocked off by a few sheets, with a simple marker written sign that read ‘dressing room.’

“Oh,” Ian replied.

“I’ll go check on Judy. I’ll check on you in a minute.” Barley ran off before Ian could respond.

Hesitating at first for how he was just left there so quickly, Ian stepped into the dressing room. It was a simple corner of the tent, the floor was grass, the walls were tarp or fabric.  There was a scratched up wooden stool in one corner, and a full length mirror in the other.  Ian closed the curtain and hung the kilt over the mirror, followed by leaning his staff against it.  He kicked off his shoes, took off his jeans and placed them on the stool.  He then put on the kilt.  While it was made to look like it was wrapped around his waist and held up by a black leather belt, it slipped on like a skirt and had a zipper on the side.  He looked in the mirror, then just stared into it as he realized his red flannel shirt clashed furiously with the green plaid kilt.  Thankfully he was wearing a plain white tshirt underneath, so he took off his red shirt.

“You done in there?” Barley called out from the other side of the curtain.

Ian was checking the kilt out in the mirror.  It hung down to just under his knees, and it didn’t look half bad.  “Yeah.”

“Then let’s see it!” Barley said.

“Yeah!” Judy added.

Ian hesitantly slouched over.  After a moment, he peeked his head out from behind the curtain.  Still no one, and the cyclops wasn’t paying attention.  Ian pulled the curtain away, but didn’t dare to step out of the dressing room.

“You look great!” Judy exclaimed with a big smile.

Ian grinned nervously. “R-really?”

Barley looked sideways at the white stockings.  “Hold on.” Barley ran off, but was quickly back with a pair of knee high socks.  Ian took them and closed the curtain.  A minute later, he opened the curtain and glared at Barley.  “Really?”  Ian looked down at the thick white cotton socks.  Each sock had a small black tassel just below Ian’s knees, sewn to the hem.

Barley rolled his eyes. “They’re men’s socks, Ian.  And it’s either this or the stockings.”

“Shh!”  Ian quickly looked at the cyclops, but he didn’t move, hopefully that means he didn’t hear that.

“So are we getting it?” Judy asked.  “I got one too!” she added, happily holding up a pink princess play dress with ruffled rose colored sleeves.

Barley added, “I checked the price on both of them.  We can afford it.”

Ian exhaled as he thought about it.  “Okay.”

“Great!”  Barley pulled the price tag off the kilt.  “Put your shoes on.  You can wear that out of the store.”

“Outside??” Ian took a double take in a panic.

“Guys wear kilts, Ian,” Barley repeated himself.  “For Feldar’s sake, we walked by at least two guys wearing them today.”

Ian blinked, not remembering that he saw that.  “We did?”

“Yeah.”  Barley took Judy by the hand and they both went to the register to make their purchases.

While still unsure, that thought put his mind at ease.  He closed the curtain, took off the socks, picked up his shirt after hiding his stockings inside them, and put on his shoes.  He then met up with Barley and Judy just as they finished making their purchases.

Judy hugged Ian, clinging to his waist because of her short five year old height.  “Now Princess Kenna has a guard!”

“Huh?” Ian asked, confused.

Judy explained, “Princess Kenna comes from a kingdom where her guards wear those skirts.”

“They’re called kilts, Judy,” Barley quickly explained.

“Oh, right.  Kilts,” Judy corrected herself.

“And Princess Kenna likes boy stuff like dirt and archery.”  Barley turned and told both Judy, as well as Ian, “If girls can like boy stuff, boys can like girl stuff.”

“I like dirt.”  Judy smiled.

Barley patted Judy’s head, ruffling her brown hair.  “That’s my girl.”

Ian smiled at Barley as he tucked his shirt, and the hiding stockings, into the paper bag with Judy’s newly bought play dress.  Barley and Judy left the clothing tent, with Ian close behind them, as if trying to hide behind them.  With each step through the bazaar, Ian was growing more nervous.  But, with each step away from the bazaar, on their way to arts and crafts, Ian grew a little more collected.  It was a strange feeling, walking through the fairgrounds, feeling the air on his powder blue legs, but the thick fabric of the kilt constantly reminding him he’s basically in a skirt.  And yet barely anyone seemed to notice or care.  One or two people would look up at Ian, but then quickly look back down.  A voice in his head was claiming they were judging Ian, they may be even making fun of him when he’s not looking.  But, he knew better that they paid no mind to Ian.  To them, Ian was just another person who dressed up for the faire.

The arts and crafts section was pretty fun, though messy cause of all the kids playing with glue, glitter, construction paper and other messy items.  Judy didn’t mind getting dirty, which led to Barley having to clean her off with a wet wipe before they left the area.  Before they did, Judy made a few drawings, and even had a surprise for Ian and Barley.

“Kneel, good sirs,” Judy proclaimed, instantly playing make believe as Princess Kenna.

“I can only kneel so far in this thing,” Ian chuckled as he bent forward with his hands holding down his kilt, Barley kneeling like a noble knight.

Judy then placed a daisy crown on each of her big brother’s heads.  The crowns were made of paper and pipe cleaners, but they were flowers all right.

“Thank you, fair Kenna,” Barley played along as he rose to his feet, Ian chuckling as he rose to his. Ian adjusted his crown nervously, but not so awkward about it when Barley was wearing one, and Judy placing her own daisy crown on her head.

After listening to a few tales of yore from some story telling entertainers, the three decided to call it a night.  The brothers made it to the van before Judy got too tired to walk, thankfully, as her horse half was making the elftaur too big for even Barley to carry these days. Judy climbed into the back of Guinevere the Second and immediately fell asleep.  Ian and Barley climbed into the front, with Ian keeping his legs together in his new kilt.

Ian took off his daisy crown and ran his fingers through his fluffy hair.  “That was a fun day,” he commented as he tucked the crown into the paper bag in front of his feet.

“Same time next year?” Barley half joked as he backed the van out and drove out of the dirt parking lot.

“Oh yeah,” Ian replied, as the van made it onto the modern paved road, starting their journey back home. “I’ll even wear the kilt.”

“Cool,” Barley smiled. “Think you can wear the kilt outside of the Renn Faire?”

Ian shook his head.  “Oh, no,” he chuckled with a smile.

Barley gave Ian a smirk and a sideways glance before merging onto the expressway.  Today was a great day.
