Scorn is the only game on this list that's not in my library, but it seems like an appropriate one to include on this list

There's also The Metronomicon but I feel like the only inspiration from lovecraft is... the name of the game.

Summary:

Reddit Crack Fic Idea: After getting kissed in the academy and then attacked and tied up by Naruto, Sasuke realizes he has followed all the steps of the traditional Uchiha ninja courtship(An old process inspired by the kidnapping of a rival clan kunoichi). Sasuke feels really touched and starts acting like a Yandere, being really nice to Naruto in his withdrawn way and getting really mad whenever someone says something bad about Naruto.

The grin fell off Naruto’s face. “Shit, are you serious?” The one where Naruto and Sasuke have been in an unofficial friends-with-benefits arrangement for months, completely unaware of their feelings for each other.

Although, the guy is sort of an ass and probably wouldn't agree to posing for a picture. Naruto decides to ask him anyway. What's he got to lose?

My AO3 Wrapped: Drarry Recs

This year I’ve embraced a change of pace and read way less than I intended to. This made me feel a bit disconnected from fandom but also allowed me to put this list together in record time so let’s not complain too much 😂 this is shorter and lacking my usual commentary but I didn’t want to break the tradition of sharing my fave reads of the year! *Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is the only game I've ever paid full price for but it was definitely worth it to me. I adore it and play it constantly! 😎 I haven't paid more than $20 for anything else (PowerWash Simulator for $17 and it was worth it to me, such a relaxing game!) and generally get things in a bundle or pay less than $10 for a single game.

Hello shippers and & readers!

After a little bit of a post-long read break, our cycle had come to an end and because of that, we declared a Raffle Winner. One of the three-placement prizes is to select our theme an the winner chose "Fics that take place outdoors!" With a lovely and meaty list of some of our faves, we chose one that really takes the relationship our favourite pair has with the outdoors and the charming insular world they tend to share together. That was stay with me, go places by beethechange.

The book club agreed that, as one of those fics inspired by a few conversations in our own chat, this fic signified a very fond moment in our history as a shyan server. Moreso that it treats us to drinking games, a little shared smoke and speculating on a future they could share under the trees and stars

Summary:

“Never have I ever,” Shane says, feeling his way delicately around the syllables, making nice with all the consonants and vowels, “hooked up with a friend at a wedding.”

Neither of them drinks. Neither of them breathes, either.

Ryan wants to curl in on himself, to kick his feet and pound on the wood of the pier. He wants to throw his head back and yell up to the sky. The shock, the pure adrenaline of the sudden turn this night has taken, has punched right through the chill of his high.

Instead he presses his fingernails into the palms of his hands, giddy and terrified, and asks, “Why, do you want to?”

Book Club Thoughts

when i was thinking outdoor fics, this was one of the first that came to mind tbh!! i love the idea of the national parks being like shane's church and finally a place to get An Authentic Emotion from him [the author's] fics have a way of dragging all your thoughts and fears to the surface with them, and then making something revelatory, and this one is a prime example of that. they're both so like that. shane says marriage is a scam because he thinks he can't marry ryan. ryan thinks it won't be worth it to date men because he thinks he can't date shane. but both of them are feeling more than they know what to do with. i think one of my favourite things about this fic, actually, is the way [the author] plays with these flaws they both have - ryan's anxiety about not meeting societal expectations which leads him to have a bit of a selfish spiral about himself, and shane's repression and fear of reaching out for the thing he wants because it might burn him in the process shane preferring to "joke" about marrying ryan instead of just admitting his feelings because he's so afraid of what he thinks is the inevitable fall out it seems like he'd rather start the vulnerability after they're literally legally bound every single thing about the dock scene makes me feel insane. it’s the way that shane knows when ryan needs to get out of there for a bit and is ready to let ryan talk about it if he wants to and then when he doesn’t he’s ready to distract him. and the way that the game of never have i ever slowly starts to shift until ryan’s basically asking to be kissed and the shotgunning WOOF.

Hi! Thank you for your service, indie games always need more exposure. Would you happen to have any recs for gamebooks about fleshing out a city or more specifically having players run a tavern? I'm currently homebrewing something along those lines but always looking for more inspiration.

Thank you so much! This rec is going to mostly focus on Tavern games, and I’m going to direct you to my other city-building recommendation post, mostly because there’s so many tavern games out there!

Bragging Rights, by Yuigaron.

EXHAUSTED, YOUR PARTY ENTERS THE TAVERN. Curious patrons watch as you unload your gear and rest your weary legs. “What’ll it be”, you hear from the bar, but before you can answer, a patron shouts, “I'll buy this round, if you’ll tell us a tale.” You smile at your comrades. Surely your exploits have earned you some bragging rights; and the drinks to go with them. 

This Lasers & Feelings hack helps you tell a story about adventurers telling stories: your party will sit down in a tavern and try their best to tell a compelling story, while making rolls to determine how well they did during their adventures. This is still an adventuring game, but the adventure has happened in retrospect. If you want to run a tavern with a number of different adventuring parties, you could use a game like this one to play out their visits. A simple one-page game with just 2 stats, means that this requires little-to-no prep before you’re ready to play!

A Night at the Tavern, by Nameless Designer.

Create your tavern from the Golden Dragon Inn with its upmarket standing to the Crimson Hand with its notorious reputation and fill it with patrons from boisterous thugs to debating merchants and more. Take your party of adventurers for an evening of carousing and entertainment; interact with the patrons; participate in a variety of mini-games and earn rewards or suffer consequences as a result of your actions.

A Night at the Tavern is a tavern generator and mini-game for fantasy adventure games. This supplement can be used with any role-playing game system. This game is designed to fit into a longer campaign, including a list of prompts and events that your characters might get involved in during a night of carousing. If you want to play new characters, you can do that too! Just roll on a few random tables, and you’ve got a quick patron with a description, a detail and a mood. It looks like this game is primarily designed to be used with games like 5E, so if you want to use it for another system, you might need to home-brew a little bit, or just use the roll-tables and prompts for inspiration.

So You’re in a Tavern, by Live Real Press.

So You're in a Tavern is about telling outrageous stories about adventures that are absolutely true in every way. It uses a deck of playing cards and a few tokens to help tell the tales and determine a winner. It can be played with a group or solo.

Players take turns drawing cards to prompt for an outrageous story. As the player tells their story, other players add wagers to change the story. "I'm sorry, Sir Pantsonfire, but wasn't it a giant daisy, not a fire-breathing dragon?" The player can accept the wager and incorporate the change or deny it by adding a coin of their own.

This is another quick-to-run storytelling game about adventurers telling of their exploits, but it uses cards instead of dice to present your players with prompts. The characters are competing to tell the best story, rather than collaboratively telling a tale of adventure - which means that they’re also competing to see who gets the most coins. If you tell the best story, you win - but you also have to buy all of your friends drinks!

Better the Devil Who Serves You, by Rae Nedjadi.

You have been a Demon Lorde for hundreds, thousands of years. The armies of men and mage alike have trembled before you, begging for mercy.

You remember those days quite fondly.

As much fun as you’re having spending time with your new Master and in their lovely coffee shop, you had no idea how difficult being a Devil Butler would be! (Not that you would ever let anyone know you were having a hard time!)

This is a PbtA game about powerful creatures that serve a young witch-child who got kicked out of magic school. Your ward has always wanted to run a coffee shop, so you’re managing a business and parenting at the same time. This game is meant to be humorous and light-spirited, great for a fun session with friends.

Bar Adventurers, by BarAdventurers.

Bar Adventurers is a light-hearted and creatively stimulating TTRPG about going out for a night of drinking. Players go on an adventure, hopping from one bar to the next where they try different, wacky, and sometimes questionable alcoholic beverages. The main premise of the game is to have fun exploring and coming up with zany drinks but watch out! As a night full of drinking can bring other crazy and risky surprises…

This bar-hopping game includes rules for getting into bar-fights, regaining HP by drinking water or eating a snack, and bar-crawl based abilities. You do not die in this game - you’ve just drunk more than you can handle, and get knocked out. The game document itself is done up in bright colours and has a character sheet based off of an ID card. A great one-and-done game for players who don’t want to do anything serious.

Poutine, by The Kinematic Cafe.

This is a game about love, regret, and delicious, delicious poutine. In it, you will tell the stories of people living in a small town, their hardships, and their perseverance. It's designed for two (or more) players, and is heavily influenced by Avery Alder's A Place to F*ck Each Other, Jason Pitre's Spark, and D. Vincent Baker's Apocalypse World.

The game is centred around a small restaurant, and the people who frequent it. The restaurant is a place of confession, and perspective. Players will make, and play these people in scenes with other citizens of the town; but they will also be playing with a "third wheel", a player who represents the hardships these people face in their day to day life.

If you want to be focused on the customers who inhabit the city and frequent your tavern, I’d recommend taking a look at Poutine. The core focus of the game is on the people who make this establishment a second home - and it doesn’t have to use the in-game setting. You can make it a fantasy tavern, a futuristic cafe, or even on a space station on the final frontier. The game runs off of a “menu”, requiring the players to push their characters into personal problems so that the wait staff can help them find their way out. If you want to play a game about the small troubles of everyday life, I recommend this game.

CHARLI has always been an icon of the pop industry, the internet culture, and the gays. she's responsible for the making of HUGE HITS like I LOVE IT by ICONA POP, FANCY by IGGY AZALEA. she helped REVOLUTIONIZE a new LANDSCAPE for POP MUSIC, taking inspiration from BUBBLEGUM BASS and the PC MUSIC record label and making POP 2. as you can see, she is a BIG DEAL.

with the help of her long-time executive producer A.G COOK, CHARLI returns to the HYPERPOP concept i know and love in her newest album, BRAT. however, BRAT add a simple twist in this form of production—it's a 41-minute long CLUB RECORD. a GREEN PANTONE-coded back drop with with the text 'BRAT' in lowercase printed in the center that is slightly compressed is presented in the cover of the album. "i think the constant demand for access to women’s bodies and faces in our album artwork is MYSOGINISTIC and BORING [sic]," CHARLI tweeted out in response to people's criticism of the artwork's MINIMALISM. she's "not doing things to be NICE." CHARLI's confrontational actions is an introduction of what to expect.

now what is BRAT? BRAT is how CHARLI refer to a person who is "a bit MESSY who loves to PARTY and says DUMB THINGS," CHARLI explains. "she's HONEST, BLUNT, AND A LITTLE BIT VOLATILE. that's BRAT."CHARLI's BRAT SUMMER is a SUMMER holiday where you can do whatever you want and be, and you can assume what a BRAT SUMMER is whatever you like. "[BRAT SUMMER] can be LUXURY but it can also be TRASHY. just like a pack of CIGS and a BIC lighter and a strappy white TANK with NO BRA," the POPSTAR joked in a radio interview with NICK GRIMSHAW. "that's kind of all you need." it's like MEGAN THEE STALLION's HOT GIRL SUMMER, but you're a RAVE GIRL.

what i love about CHARLI's BRAT is how HONEST and RELATABLE she is in the ALBUM and how CONFRONTING she approach to it. CHARLI did confirm that there is no other DISS TRACK in the album but VON DUTCH, but the lyricism is BRUTATLLY HONEST and DIRECT, yet it feels PERSONAL and INFORMAL—CHARLI described it as "the way i would say it to a FRIEND in a TEXT MESSAGE". this way of CHATTING her feelings on the album helps me connect more into all the things she's talking about.

the production is top-tier, too. A.G COOK cooks just as hard as POP 2, now with a more UPBEAT and RAVY tune. CHARLI took part in CO-PRODUCING the track APPLE, she did AWESOME looking at the overall quality of the song (and her BOILER ROOM stage which you should check out). with the PERFECTLY-CRAFTED lyrics over a layer of AUTO-TUNE in some places, she cooked up a AOTY contender, no doubt the AOTY winner.

well, in conclusion, BRAT is now my top 1 album of the year, and my most favorite CHARLI album, succesding POP 2.

underrated gem(s): EVERYTHING IS ROMANTIC - crazy how unpopular this song is like HUHHHH, I MIGHT SAY SOMETHING STUPID - my top 1 sad song of all time in tie with CARAMELDASSEN BUT IT'S PLAYING IN A DIFFERENT ROOM (1 HOUR LOOP), SO I - RIP SOPHIA the best memorial song for the best artist in the HYPERPOP game,

There are also several fanon things that you'll probably acquire from being in the fandom for a while. For example, (some spoilers ahead, I'll try my best to not spoil major stuff)

The Canary Curse is based off of a canary in a coalmine since canaries have sensitive lungs, they die to warn the miners that they should get out of the coalmine to stop breathing in the carbon monoxide. It's an omen of death, and for the Life series, it's an omen that everything is now going to go to absolute chaos and everyone is going to die. it's the beginning of the end. And Jimmy is the canary since he always died first.

Tarot card/celestial bodies represent the winners because they suit them really well and also they're pretty cool. It's personally one of my favorite parts about the fandom.

Also, if you're interested in the fandom but you don't rly want to watch POVs, you just want to get the vibe of the content, you could definitely watch Martyn (InTheLittleWood Shorts) and Jimmy's (Solidarity Shorts) reaction content. They

For POVs and stuff, Peri (prev) has touched on it pretty well, but I've got a few things to add.

In 3L, the desert vs Dogwarts war was the main storyline, so I'd recommend watching Scar or Grian and Martyn or Ren for that main plot. Impulse and Tango were both double agents, so they probably also had a lot of information on all sides. The Crastle inner conflict was also a thing, along with the Crastle's rivalry/enemy thing with Dogwarts.

The flower husbands (Scott and Jimmy, because they lived in a flower forest in 3rd Life) were primarily very domestic and pretty peaceful before they actually got really involved in the war.

Scott has the most heartwrenching ending to 3rd Life ever. 10/10. I'm pretty sure I actually cried.

In LL, I'd really recommend Grian's pov because his alliances change. Same with Cleo, except for with completely different alliances.

Pearl and Scott were really successful that season, so I'd also recommend watching their povs. Also, more Grian propaganda, there's an absolutely hilarious scene where he and Mumbo are digging for diamonds in one episode and it's just. i can't explain it. it's hilarious. I'm sure there's a clip somewhere :D

Double Life is just a mess and I love it. Watch Pearl. She's the main character who went on a villain arc. If you want side character suffering, watch Cleo or Scott. Martyn is also part of the divorcée quartet.

(I'm pretty sure that is officially what those four are called, but I'm not completely sure.)

Speaking of, Scott and Cleo rejected their soulmates (Pearl and Martyn respectively) to be with each other. They've been trying to be a duo since 3rd Life, where Scott proposed that after both of their husbands died to the war (Jimmy and Bdubs), they could be free. And that's where the duo name widow's alliance comes from.

If you add Pearl to that, it's Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss, which is their trio name that stemmed from Last Life.

This is THE fandom classic almost everyone has read and talks about. It features a redeemed, slightly obsessive, charming Draco. Grimmauld Place plays a huge role in the fic and Ron/Hermione are wonderful. Overall 10/10.

I genuinely do not know if any fic rec can do justice to this masterpiece. It’s so beautiful and poignant and somehow nostalgic. The language, the plot, the pining and the mystery are all breathtaking. You have to read this one yourself to believe me. This is definitely a major fandom classic.

Tea and No Sympathy [70k] by who_la_hoop

It's Potter's fault, of course, that Draco finds himself trapped in the same twenty-four-hour period, repeating itself over and over again. It's been nearly a year since the unpleasant business at Hogwarts, and Draco's getting on with his life quite nicely, thank you, until Harry sodding Potter steps in and ruins it all, just like always. At first, though, the time loop seems liberating. For the first time in his life, he can do anything, say anything, be anything, without consequence. But the more Draco repeats the day, the more he realises the uncomfortable truth: he's falling head over heels for the speccy git. And suddenly, the time loop feels like a trap. For how can he ever get Harry to love him back when time is, quite literally, against him?

If you like Groundhog Day style fics, this is the winner! It has over 32k kudos on AO3 which is INSANE! It’s super well written and keeps you hooked until the very end. And it’s not just this one, every fic by this author is a classic in its own right. Especially ‘written on the heart.’

No rec list can be complete without an eighth year fic. The fandom is FULL of eighth year fics and they’re perfect for anyone craving a Harry Potter continuation but with Drarry. This is one of my absolute favourite ones. It features a lot of party games and it’s really nice to see Harry and Draco have a chance at a normal school year for once, something they’ve been robbed of for so many years. There’s a lot of pining and healing in this one and I felt all the feels when I read it.

This one. This one. THERE ARE NO WORDS BUT I WILL VALIANTLY ATTEMPT. I love it. It explores Harry’s childhood in a way very few fics have managed to and it really really tugs at the heartstrings. It’s gorgeously written and evokes so many emotions. Please read this one.

Stop All the Clocks (This Is the Last Time I’m Leaving Without You) [44k] by @firethesound

Living with Draco was difficult; living without him is unbearable. But if there’s one thing Harry learned from the war, it’s that even when one life ends, the rest of the world goes right on living.

Full disclosure- I haven’t read this and I don’t know if I ever can. It features MCD (main character death) and I really struggle with reading fics that don’t have a happy ending. Having said that, it is a fandom classic and everyone who has read it, RAVES about it. They say it’s gorgeous and beautiful and devastating. What I can confirm is that firethesound is an amazing author and I have read several other fics by them which could also be considered fandom classics. Especially ‘All Our Secrets Laid Bare’ which is the ultimate Auror partners fic and ‘A Convenient Impracticality’ which is the ultimate fake dating/friends-with-benefits fic. 

Dwelling [83k] by aideomai

Curses, James and Lily Potter ride again, several Ministry balls, a teenage Summer of Love, a grim young adult dystopian winter, a few different Draco Malfoys, secrets and the problems re: not having any, alternate lives, impossible lives, real lives, allusions to Dirty Dancing, and just because it's not called the Mirror of Erised doesn't mean you shouldn't know better.

Oh my goodness, this fic ruined me. In the best possible way. If you want a glimpse into how Harry’s life could have been if his parents had been alive and if Harry and Draco had been friends from the start, this is the one. There's a huge twist which makes the fic EVEN better. I don’t want to spoil too much but this one is worth a read. Another fic by the same author, ‘Far From The Tree’ is also gorgeous. It’s a newer fic so I wouldn’t say it’s a classic yet but the plot is SO unique. It features Harry’s grown up kids coming back into the past and how that could affect Harry/Draco’s relationship. All the characters are super well written and it’s one of my personal favourites!

Other notes:

I made a Drarry rec list when I first got into the fandom. I would say almost all the fics on this list are also classics/very well liked. 

Another great way to find classics are through this link. They are Drarry fics on Ao3 (30k+ words) sorted by the number of kudos they’ve received. I would say all fics on the first five pages can be considered classics. 

Here are three other SUPER adored authors in the Ao3 fandom: Bixgirl, Saras_Girl and GallaPlacidia

All works by Bix and Saras_Girl are considered classics. GallaPlacidia started writing for the fandom only a couple of years back but she has such a knack for writing both these boys, it’s absolutely insane. I’m 100% confident her fics will be considered classics in a few years! Especially ‘The Bucket List’ and ‘Ship of Theseus.’

Last time I went about five months between doing a set of STAR WARS fic recs, this time it’s only been three months! Hurrah! It helps that, as always, this fandom puts out an incredible amount of excellent fic, so I feel like I’m never hurting for fics I want to yell about and shove at people, which is something I continue to appreciate as it often feels like so much of the world is such a huge tire fire. This is such a rich fic, centred on Beth's feelings of neglect in her marriage and the new charge and attention she gets from Rio. There's some really great banter in it and a push-pull that feels familiar and fresh all at once. Just a great little fic.

A sexy, angsty look at what was going through Rio's head when he was with Beth in his grandmother's study. It's evocative and emotionally rich and leaves you wanting more.

I’m a sucker for a five/six/seven things fic, especially when they circle themes or ideas instead of acts, and this one embodies that so well, being based around seven times Beth thinks about Rio's name. The author does a wonderful job of weaving through canon moments, and really exploring Beth's evolving feelings. It's a really lovely fic!

Any fic where Beth is bi is a winner to me, haha, but especially one that explores the twisted sort of intimacy Beth found in Rhea. The author always has a wonderful bounce to her fics, and really great dialogue, and both are on show here. Magic!

Found My Thrill by s_t_c_s / @sothischickshe Beth x Rio (x Turner, kinda). 2k words. Set during s1.

Outsider opinion fics are seriously one of my favourite things in the world, and I especially love when they're so well done. The Turner voice here is so fun and rich and emotionally dynamic, and the way the author uses it to explore Turner's burgeoning obsession with both Beth and Rio is perfect.

Hate, Love and the Steps Between by @mamey2422 Beth x Rio. <1k words. Set during s3.

We don't have enough s3 fics in this fandom, especially ones that explore the complicated shifts in Beth and Rio's relationship. There's this really great sense of interiority in this fic that the author the author captures, and it makes this short little fic feel big.

This angsty little fic where Turner watches Rio jerk off while he has him recovering and snitching in the hotel lives rent free in my head. It perfectly balances the fucked up potential of Rio x Turner and I just love it a lot.

I talk about this fic all the time, and I still can't believe other people aren't obsessed with it, haha. As you can probably tell from this list already, I'm just super into it when the dynamic between two characters bleeds over into other relationships or becomes a point of curiousity. This fic does that so well, as Rio's casual hookup starts to realise he's got someone new in his life, and how their hookups start to become informed by that. Love it.

Pyramid

Kainora Week, Day 3

This story is set in my Battlestar Galactica AU, several weeks after the Day 2 story. Pyramid is a sport in the BSG universe that I’m going to pretend has rules vaguely similar to pro-bending for the sake of storytelling. Content note for adult tobacco use typical of BSG (which might explain why the Twelve Colonies have FTL and sentient AI but no cure for cancer).

“Are you telling me no one here knows how to play pyramid?” asked Mako, agitation finally boiling over.

When word had gone round that the Quartermaster was organizing a pyramid tournament, it had seemed like the pilots would be a clear contender. Unfortunately, Korra was still stuck in sick bay with a busted knee from her downed airman adventure, and Mako was having a hard time coming up with a suitable replacement.

Jinora had been listening as Mako one-by-one propositioned the various pilots coming in and out of the rec room while she worked on a post-flight report. Normally she would have done it in the duty locker or ready room, but if Chief Sato had said she let the nuggets off Viper maintenance early, and if she’d heard one particular nugget mention he was going to the rec room, and if she’d happened to sit next to said particular nugget—well, that was between her and the gods, thank you very much.

Mako dropped into one of the battered plastic chairs and groaned. “I knew we’d never beat the knuckle-draggers, but I was hoping we’d be able to beat the cooks.”

“C’mon, Mako, I’m sure we’ll do fine,” Bolin attempted to console his teammate.

“Without a third player?”

“I’ll do it.”

Jinora’s head snapped to the voice by her side. “What?” said half the room.

“I played some street ball back in the day,” said Kai. “I remember…some of it.”

Mako took a deep breath. “Well, that’s better than nothing. Okay, sure. Welcome to the new-if-not-necessarily-improved Fire Ferrets, Lefty.”

Kai soon regretted the decision, spending basically all his off-duty waking hours (of which there were precious few) in one of the hangar bays serving as makeshift pyramid courts. He said as much before crashing into his rack after his third training session with Mako and Bolin.

“Your pain is my gain,” said Jinora quietly.

“What?” Kai mumbled through the pillow.

“Nothing.”

Okay, so maybe she had snuck down with Opal and watched them practice. And maybe she’d swapped CAPs with Fruitcake to avoid missing one of their practices. And if she had, so what?

As the tournament approached, she could drop the pretense, as more and more of the pilots made a point of watching (though it cost her an overnight double-CAP from Beaks). If there was one thing Colonial officers and enlistees alike enjoyed, it was gambling, and there were a lot of cubits flying around on tournament wagers. Everyone wanted to get the latest updates on the squad, and give what advice they could. Korra even wobbled down on her crutches and appointed herself Kai’s personal coach, critiquing his form and teaching him a lot of things he hadn’t known were fouls.

To call it a locker room was generous, really a tool closet that was mostly being used for long-term storage. Mako’s official policy on game day access was “wingmen and copilots only”, but Gonzo was nowhere to be seen so Opal was able to slip in as Bolin’s emotional support instead. Korra had made sure they stayed out of the way for final suit-up and prep.

“First match, you’re up against the snipes,” the self-appointed coach said from her spot the room’s only chair. She somehow made the hard black plastic feel like a throne. “That’s good, means Asami will be rooting for you this round. After that, all bets are off. Winner goes up against winner of the gunners-versus-cooks match.”

“Cross that bridge when we come to it,” said Mako. “Alright, everybody ready?”

Kai groaned. Nobody could blame him for being terrified. That didn’t seem to do anything for the terror.

“Nothing like going up against the Cylons,” said Jinora. “You’ll come out in one piece—probably.” She stole his cigarette, gave him a good-luck kiss, and steered him towards the door. “C’mon, time to show the crew what you’ve got.”

Major Shinobi was playing commentator, hyping up the crowd. Mako and Bolin headed out the instant he called their names, but Kai lingered just long enough for Jinora to give him a push.

And if she had opted for an underhand swat, and if she had aimed right for Kai’s behind, and if it had been perhaps a little harder than it needed to be—that was really no one else’s business, now was it?

hi!!! you have me totally hooked with your description of the winners/the beartown series... i've never read anxious people, which i know a lot ppl have enjoyed that one of his, and i'm just trying to get back into daily reading habits, so THANK YOU FOR THE UNCONSCIOUS REC!! if you have any more really good books you've read just in general.. i'm definitely in the looking-for-recs mode 😭😭😭 anyway, CONGRATS ON PAGE 200!! ❣️❣️❣️

aaaa okay okay first, thank you so much for the congrats!! “the winners” is going to be the longest book i’ve read this year at about 678 pages (just realized the numbers are in chronological order….) so i’m almost halfway there!! i’ve only teared up like three times so far.

i have read “anxious people” and really loved it!! it’s very popular for a reason, and it’s one of those books i’m glad is popular, although i would love to see more people talk about the author’s “beartown” series. the closest i’ve come to it is through seeing it mentioned in a twitter thread that was full of spoilers so i immediately clicked out of that. 

it’s really cool that you’re into hockey because i think you’ll find a lot of love with “beartown” and be able to connect even more than i possibly did with the characters as we see how this sport drives them to the highest of highs only for them to be shown at their complete worst…..

(this came out a little long….i am very sorry about that. my little rant about the beartown series and my personal book recs are down below!!)

what i love about the story is how empathetic this author is when it comes to his deeply complicated characters. he doesn’t shy away from the violence of hockey, as you would know better than i do, and the thrill that drives fans absolutely mad, while also being able to display the complexity of their emotions and how different circumstances can drive people to make different decisions, both on and off the ice. as someone who doesn’t know too much hockey, the author has a way of making you feel invested in it because most of the characters are, and the descriptions of when they’re on the ice and playing the game is absolutely ruthless at times but most often, it’s all about the feeling of elation these players describe as they play. that’s what makes the choices they make outside of the ice rink feel as if it weighs so heavily, because by putting so much of themselves into hockey, they take all the good and bad with them that eventually leads to some pretty intense events. 

one of the key elements of the entire series that’s so vital to digging into the heart of this small hockey town that lives near the forest is that it spans across a wide range of perspectives; multiple voices given a highlight because what this series is about isn’t just hockey itself, it’s the people who sacrifice and devote their entire lives to it, and who by extension, cause ripples in the fabric of each other’s lives. we see that ripple escalate as we see through the eyes of different families and friends and community members with different impacts to the story and it’s just….absolutely phenomenal. i highly recommend it.

as for book recs, if you’re looking for more hockey, i would love to recommend you “icebreaker” by a.l. graziadei. it’s a young adult book, and much much shorter in length to backman’s “beartown” series, but it offers a very impactful perspective with our main character, mickey james III, who goes through a tough mental health journey that i resonated with and that i hope others have, too.

if you want something more fun and a little lighthearted with hockey still in the background, there’s also the “check! please” series by ngozi ukazu. it’s a graphic novel series in a college setting and very adorable (the mc loves baking!!) so there’s that. also….just a slip-in……but i will recommend “gravity” by tal bauer as well!!! just something to check out maybe…..this was my review of the book, right here.

I don't usually read PWP unless I'm in a very specific mood, but I had to recommend these because the writing and characterisation of Letho is so good. He is intelligent, cunning, understated. Game Eskel and Lambert, my loves. With excellent banter between the two. Add on Artistic Lambert, one of my favourite tropes for him, and you have a winner. Beautifully characterised with a trademark soft twist. This is a short but lovely piece from an author that needs no introduction.

I was privileged enough to have this one dedicated to me, but that isn't the reason I'm reccing it! It's fabulous. Jaskier's characterisation is fantastic, and Skald has an absolutely exquisite Lambert too. He's cheeky, cunning and wry in all the right amounts. I recommend all of Skald's work. Brilliant writer and an amazingly kind member of the fandom.
