The criticisms of the songs in Songbirds and Snakes all come down to them saying it takes the viewer out of the harrowing world of the Hunger Games and into an unrealistic embarrassing musical. The fact though is that songs have always been apart of rebellion, in sowing seeds of unrest by singing words that are forbidden to speak. Harriet Tubman sang a song to say goodbye to her family when she ran away, because they could not speak to one another and it was an understood language between her and her family. Armies would sing songs of resilience and strength as they marched into battle. Sailors tunes are known widely throughout history. What is so surprising and embarrassing about humans finding sincerity and melodies comforting in the face of death and an unjust world? Music is a tool, when easily looked over and seen as "embarrassing", people can sing messages of freedom, hope, and faith under the eye of those who would condemn them. When Lucy Grey began to sing the capital didn't understand the point being made, but her covey did, district twelve did, and that hidden message is the whole point. She sang words of rebellion in which spoken would have had her severely punished

Cosette and radical gentleness
So there is a bunch of variations of ' radicalism ' in Les Mis - radical martyrdom from Fantine, radical Rebellion against injustices from Enjolras, radical redemption and survival from Eponine, etc
But what about radical gentleness?
What about the one thing that Cosette chose to be radical about despite all that that has happened to her?
Cosette chose to be radically gentle as a way to help her heal from traumas, as a way to be an antithesis of the hate and cruelty Monsieur and Madame Thenardier stand for, as a self defense armor from chaos around her
Radical gentleness can literally be a powerful tool of self defense especially in tough times
But please do not mistake gentleness for weakness - some of the gentlest people one may ever meet are actually amongst the strongest. I mean, look at Cosette and Sansa, for starters
Cosette becomes an epitome of Silk Hiding Steel, and her calm energy not only gives a sense of solace to several others, it reminds several others that there is more to life than just barricades, that there CAN be peace even within chaos.
That there can be hope Even in darkness.

Dpxdc prompt here.
Valerie goes to Gotham and gets a bat Boy/Girlfriend
So the setup for this is that Danny just got done helping the big bad bat with some big ghost themed problem. What was it? Doesn't matter but in the epic adventure that happened identities were revealed (its a good parent fentons so no adoption) and at the end Batman says "If there is anything I can do to return the favor let me know."
And Danny responds with "Actually there is something but it's something Bruce Wayne is better suited for."
Danny then goes on to explain what happened with Cujo and Valeries dad and how he's pretty sure that the way he was fired is illegal in some way. Now he's not asking for you to try to sue these guys but if Maybe you were able to offer him a job with a living wage so that Val doesn't have to stress so much since Danny can't do anything to fix this himself.
Bruce who had already planned to open some form of Wayne Tech branch in Amity to give him an excuse to be seen there if it was ever necessary just says he'll see what he can do.
So Damon Gray (also I love how he has such a similar name to a bat) gets a call from a Wayne tech hiring manager saying that they are opening a location in Amity and would like to interview him for a position. Damian gets the past the initial interview but he has to go to Gotham for a few weeks foe relevant training etc.
Obviously Valerie has to go with him so they pack up and are off on this all expenses paid trip with a bigger paycheck at the end to look forward to.
Now obviously Bruce's kids notice what is happening and after he explains that a young hero he met asked for his help in setting things right that he doesn't have the resources to do himself. Of course the kids have to meet the family that this (rather impressive from what Bruce was saying, which is not biased by him looking like he could be one of his kids no way) hero gave up a favor from the Batman for so they "just so happen" to stumble upon the two and in true batfam manner convince the tour guide to let them tag along.
Now here is where things get fun so depending on which bat you choose obviously determines who's all there as if you choose Dick then the only other bat's of that age would be young Jason and maybe Barbara if you drag her in. Now me personally I think the best choices are Damian who's not my favorite for this as I think Val would find it weird to date a guy who has such a similar name as her dad one of either Cass or Steph and while that could be fun i think the only Bat boy who as far as I'm aware has not had a badass vigilante girlfriend who can snap him like a twig so far is Duke.
Now some other reasons I think it might be fun for Duke and Val as a couple is maybe he can see the changes her red huntress suit causes to her with his powers thus leading to that initial curiosity that causes him to spend more time with her to get to the bottom of it.
Maybe she asks one of the Wayne's if they know somewhere she can get a good spar and the others sacrifice Duke as he's got the least experience under his belt (not saying he's a bad fighter but some of these bats have been fighting since before puberty) since they assume she's just a standard civi. He tries to hold back since again civi, but she knocks him on his ass before he can react before saying she probably should have mentioned being a black belt.
Just think of all the cute moments they could have together.
One interaction I thought of for after they know each other's vigilante identity and val learns Danny is why Bruce reached out to her Dad. (She knows he is Phantom in this)
"So that dork went out of his way to ask Batman for help even after I finally pulled my head out of my ass to see it wasn't his fault? Of course he still feels guilty over it, damn Martyr complex, we aren't even dating anymore!"
"You guys dated?"
"Yeah in civis while I was actively hunting him for revenge in our hero ids. Who dates a girl actively trying to kill you?!"
"Can't blame him."
"What?"

No because let’s really truly talk about the fact that Uma was martyred by Mal, which made her a piriah on the isle, mix that with the fact she had smelly hair and was tiny in stature and fast foward to her being a pirate queen with great social standing and badass reputation, her own turf, a whole ass devoted crew, her own ship, and being the one to fully liberate the entire isle, ike she’s truly that girl and let’s also talk about how through it all, Harry was the only one there for her, THE ENTIRE TIME.
They dedicated their whole lives to each other and their goal to be free and they did it 🥹😊😎

The Best Panels of One Piece, Romance Dawn (chapter 1-7)

Full video scripts below the cut
Chapter 1:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
Chapter 1, being the very first one, obviously has quite a few contenders. Luffy's very first Gum Gum Pistol is an obvious one, setting the tone of One Piece's battles with its mixture of goofy and badass. Plus, god damn, even in chapter one Oda knew how to do an epic splash page.
I also like this panel, where Lucky Roux shoots a mountain bandit in the head. This too is a major tone setter, driving home the seriousness and danger of pirate life. The story up to this point mostly plays as fairly lighthearted comedy, and seeing the jolly cartoon fat guy casually murder a man shocks the audience a little bit. Despite the cartoony artstyle, this isn't a kiddy pirate adventure.
But the crown has to go to the passing of the straw hat from Shanks to Luffy. It's a panel that has only ever taken on more meaning as the story has gone on, and the symbol of the straw hat has taken on more and more importance. It represents the promise between Luffy and Shanks to meet again, Shanks recognizing Luffy as an equal, and it's the passing of a torch. That straw hat means something, and Shanks is passing it on to someone who he feels is a worthy heir to that significance. “Romance Dawn” indeed.
Chapter 2:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
Chapter 2 is all about establishing Luffy's character now that he's grown up, and especially the scale of the odds he's up against. What does his dream to be king of the pirates really mean?
And this is where Oda shows his skill not just as an action and comedy artist, but as a storyteller. He introduces Koby the Cabin Boy, a character who mostly exists to contrast Luffy. Scared, self-defeating and cowardly, even his body language is Luffy's direct opposite.
When Luffy says he will be king of the pirates, Oda drops the angle down low, playing Luffy's chill, unaffected sitting posture against Koby's shouting. His arms are wide, foreshortening even out of the panel as the nervous boy tries to communicate the jaw-dropping scale of what Luffy has said he will accomplish. "Don't tell me you're after the One Piece"?
We feel the weight of Koby's astonishment here, the monumental nature of what Luffy has promised to do. The One Piece isn't a silly bed-time story for children, it is a real thing, and to go after it is to march to almost certain death. And the fact that Luffy is so casual about it, because he has accepted death, is not normal. Luffy is not normal, and Oda establishes this visually through acting in every interaction he has with Koby.
Chapter 3:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
Chapter 3 introduces Zoro with this amazing panel, which, given how much of a martyr he is for the crew and Luffy, WOW what a hell of an establishing shot. But it also establishes one of the great running themes of One Piece, which is the abuse of power, and the value of freedom. Helmeppo lords his status as a navy failson over the townsfolk, abusing his position and status in a way we will see villains in the story do over and over again.
And Luffy does what Luffy will always do to those who use their power in this way. When he learns that Helmeppo lied to Zoro, let him believe he would be free if he survived a month tied up, only to plan an execution behind his back…
This happens.
There are many reasons One Piece is a fun and satisfying narrative to follow, Oda's dynamic and exciting art is a big one for me, but the thing I love the most might the vicious delight the story takes in showing us the ruling classes getting the ass-kicking they so richly deserve.
Chapter 4:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
Chapter 4 gives us perhaps one of the weakest villain designs in the series, which is Axe-Hand Morgan. His obsession with power and control foreshadows many of One Piece's best villains, but… hoo boy, not Oda's best character design.
On a better note, though, we're getting one of the most important recurring story beats in the narrative, which is the effect Luffy has on people around him. Koby, who not two chapters ago was a cowering appeasing wretch, walks into the execution grounds to free Zoro because he can't stand to see the navy oppressing people this way. He accepted abuse from Alvida, but no more. Luffy changes the people around him, and the most important thing he does is set them free of their fear. He teaches people to pursue their freedom, even if it costs them their lives. He will do this many times throughout the story, and Koby won't be the last person who almost dies to chase the dream Luffy kindled in them.
Chapter 5:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
In Chapter 5 the obvious choice might be Luffy taking bullets for his friends in the nick of time, which is a very Luffy thing to do, but I think the best panel is something much quieter. We get a flashback to Zoro's backstory, and his rivalry with childhood friend and swordfighting prodigy Kuina, who is idly one of the most transmasculine characters in anime history.
The panel that strikes me the most in this chapter, though, is this one. It's just a little transitional panel, Kuina lying there, dead, with the words "humans are fragile things Zoro" hovering above. Oda uses crosshatching to just barely hint at the eye sockets under the cloth, which otherwise erases Kuina's face, erasing identity, erasing life. It's such a quiet and disquieting panel, such a matter-of-fact reminder of cold mortality in the middle of all Zoro's hotblooded shouting. It's a death that is so meaningless, and Zoro, in taking Kuina's sword with him, is trying desperately to make it meaningful. If he becomes the greatest swordsman in the world, then everyone will know that Kuina was his greatest rival.
I think it's the same reason so many One Piece fans want Tashigi to turn out to be Kuina in the end. Because the idea that people can just vanish from our lives, so coldly and so pointlessly… it's a scary thought to have.
Chapter 6:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
In Chapter 6, the easy answer, I guess, is the big epic Oda splash page of the Gum Gum Whip taking out a dozen Marines, but… I mean you know it has to be the introduction of the Three Sword Style. Dear Zoro, with his cool bandana and his intense looks and his tragic backstory… and here he is with a sword in his mouth.
This is the power of One Piece. Because on the one hand, this is stupid. This is objectively stupid. Holding a sword in your mouth is dumb, this looks dumb, this doesn't work, this is cartoon nonsense that doesn't make any goddamn sense.
On the other hand… this totally fucking rules. Oda presents it so perfectly with that hunched over power pose blocking ten swords at once, and the black bandana over his head, although I'll never forgive the translators for covering this much of the art over with sound effects. You miss the rope still falling from his body and the scabbards still in the air from Zoro unsheating them so fast. This panel bypasses every critical neuron in my brain, and speaks to the primal, stupid lizard and monkey part of my man brain that goes "ooooh, three swords cool!" And nobody does that like Oda.
Chapter 7:
What are the best panels in One Piece?
Chapter 7 sees our first parting of ways, with Koby remaining behind to enlist in the Marines. It's mostly an exposition chapter, a cool down from all the action with Axe Hand Morgan, but Oda once again uses what could be boring exposition to do good character building. Because Luffy and Zoro are pirates, they can't stay in a navy town, and as they leave, Luffy begins to spill the beans on how Koby was a cabin boy for a pirate, which might ruin his chances to enlist. And Koby, desperately torn up about saying goodbye to his first real friend… punches Luffy to shut him up. Which then becomes evidence that Koby isn't with them, isn't a pirate, so he can enlist.
It's the first moment Koby fully asserts himself, it's the first punch he throws for his dream as a Marine, but it is also a moment of revelation. However simple-minded Luffy seems, so straightforward and oblivious, here he reveals a deep understanding not only of other people but of the things they need, the push they need to find their courage. He pushes Koby's buttons to force him to commit to his dream, to force him to renounce piracy, and when Koby does… Luffy couldn't be more proud. And maybe a little smug.

i figured the username is from ATYD but I've never actually read it plzzz explain the origin to me it's killing me and I can't find info anywhere
thamk youuu have a nice day
HII yes ofc no worries <33
okay so because of remus' monthly transformations his hip hurts a lot (i think this is the reason) and like it becomes a pretty long lasting thing. remus tells sirius and sirius understandably is just wondering why he wont ask madame pompfrey to fix it when he goes to her. sirius brings it up a few times and remus starts to get irritated.
now there's this other thing, too. remus in this fic is really secretive, and there's a lot of things he just forgets to mention to sirius. it becomes kind of a thing that whenever sirius feels upset, he asks remus for a secret.
soo idk i think there's like a pretty tense environment for them and sirius sirius mentions remus' hip and remus gets maddd and he starts yelling at sirius and being like why do we have to talk about my shit life and he says 'mr tell me a fucking secret' then and goes on about how they should talk about sirius' mother and sirius' abuse.
the fandom glorifies it into remus being an alpha daddy badass i lowk hated him in this (and most of the fic, but whatevs). no hate to atyd it had a pretty solid plot and writing, plus a i love grant <3
umm i hope this is enough !! i dont remember what happened very well, but i think the chapter name is remus the martyr, or something if you want to check it out for yourself xx

I think it’s totally fine to love Dean as a character or to even like him more than Sam, but truly the issue comes in when people refuse to see his flaws, or just want Sam to follow him blindly because they think he’s older/cooler/more badass one. Dean is severly fucked up. Sam is too, but Dean is messed up in a way that actively hurts other people more often than not. It’s wild that people will argue that Dean is some purely selfless and loving martyr, when even the way he loves Sam is often very selfish. And he calls people family when he clearly doesn’t actually consider them such.
Again, people can still love his character, but let’s be real, Sam is the better, stronger person.
Ironically, I started the show as a Dean girl, but evened out to loving both brothers. It was in Season 4 when we watched Sam doing the wrong thing for … mostly … the right reasons that I switched to being a Sam girl. Dean was just such an unrelentingly controlling asshole that I had to side with Sam by default. Sam did the "big wrong" thing of the season, but Dean made every wrong decision in the way he dealt with Sam. And I liked him less for it. In Season 8, when Dean had switched out Amelia’s number just so he’d have it ready to manipulate Sam, if he "needed" to, that I had a hard time even liking him.
You've pretty much nailed it 💯

i dont talk about this nearly enough so im going to do it now: its so so important and awesome to me that dunya didn’t fire the gun.
like, obviously it would have been badass of her to fire it and kill svidrigailov, yeah. but.
throughout the book, dunya is compared to raskolnikov very heavily and enthusiastically (much by razumikhin, but thats another story), in both her appearance and content of her character. this, along with being the family martyr become among the only things we really get to know about her (she’s a female side character in an 1800’s russian novel, surprise surprise). so being alike to raskolnikov is her box. her main box. all the characters have boxes, that’s her box.
being so strongly compared to raskolnikov, it sets up expectations for her to follow suit in his nihilistic ideologies, or perhaps his violent tendency. so, when she has the revolver in her hand, it is forced into mind that she is supposedly just like raskolnikov. then, moment of truth, she doesn’t shoot. well, she does, but she misses on purpose—thats beside the point. she warns, like a rattlesnake before it bites. she separates herself so gracefully, proving that she has one thing raskolnikov doesnt: mercy. she shows mercy to svidrigailov, implied murderer and rapist, leaving him to dwell in his philosophy and existential misery. she separates herself, and in doing so, she proves what vast strength she has. it’s something she is proving constantly throughout the book, over and over, but this final move of not falling into the open hands of murder, she proves her goodness. she shows us that she is not her brother, because she’s better. when faced with the chance to murder someone who really deserved it she didnt kill, and that by no means weakens her. she shows she’s better than raskolnikov (or who he was becoming, trying to be), luzhin, svidrigailov, what have you. and also like??? fuck?? i love her?? people are out here NOT giving her the attention she deserves and it shows. but all in all shes entirely different and shows that over and over leading up to this scene. i just think this moment is important in finalizing that separation of characterization, and annoying how the other characters can’t see her individuality.
sorry for the rant i know it was mostly repetition of the “shes a different character than raskolnikov and i think thats fucking SICK” thing
anyways i love her the weddings next week

Fics where Neil gets in a fight and actually wins!! I know it’s more commonly said that he can start fights and not finish them but let’s be for real, the boy was raised by two mafias and is scary as hell (I think i’ve seen someone ask this a while ago but i’m not sure if there’s an updated list) Mainly wondering for like post-canon fics, but au’s are cool too!
There’s quite a bit to discover on this topic, be that AU or in the context of canon.  Of course, Neil rarely comes out of these troubles unscathed, but he wouldn’t be Neil if there wasn’t also a little martyrdom involved.  You might find more on this under our bamf!Neil, butcher!Neil and occasionally raven!Neil tags.  Have a browse, and see if there’s anything you like. - S

Neil Josten had transferred at the beginning of this season, and sure he'd been a nightmare for the team, but not in the "I was raised by a serial killer" kind of way. He was hard on the team—way harder than anyone had been before—and he wasn't even the captain. He was just some rookie striker from South Carolina. Most of the time she forgot he was anything but a rookie striker, but then someone would ask about his scars or call him a different name. Those were the few moments she remembered he wasn't just an asshole. He was an asshole with a past. So when The Event happened, she was terrified, horrified beyond all reason, but she was not surprised. Or, Neil is a badass motherfucker.

I'm An Accountant by boomba77 [Not Rated, 24101 words, incomplete, last updated Oct. 2023]
Abram Hatford is an accountant. A legitimate accountant. He may work for an infamous crime family, but his hands have been clean for years (of blood, at least). He is a translator and an accountant. He flies under the radar, his existence hidden from the public by his family, and he prefers it that way. For him, the words ‘safe’ and ‘unknown’ are synonymous. So, when one of the Hatford empire’s more lucrative businesses begins stirring up the wrong kind of attention and losing money as a result, the Hatfords require discretion and brains. Their elusive Abram is the only person for the job. Andrew Minyard is a part-time server at a random diner and a part-time bartender at The Den, where he spends most of his time drinking what he’s supposed to be serving. It isn’t until strange things start happening around the club that Andrew decides to pay a bit more attention to the shady shit going on at his work. And then, when a stranger shows up looking for work with a perfect resume and a symmetrical face, Andrew finds his suspicion, and his interest, double. All of the death and destruction is bad, sure, but at least it’s interesting. OR Waiting for death is not living.

I Was Ruined From The Start by BrokenPineTree [Rated M, 39021 words, incomplete, last updated April 2023]
Neil’s grin is audible as he replies. "Riko’s antics getting outed to the public would make him a liability. And I do remember telling you that threats need to be dealt with accordingly." Kevin's stomach lurches into his throat with the conclusions he jumps to. "So, you’re gonna go back to the Nest?" He asks quietly. Slowly. Unsure how to feel about Neil putting himself in that situation again. He can't do that, right? He has other things to worry about now. Neil hums disapprovingly. "Try again," He offers. Kevin does. "You're... coming to Palmetto?" The au where Kevin doesn't have full confidence in Andrew's ability to stand between him and his lurking demons after only spending a few months at Palmetto. But with the dangerous card itching to emerge from under his sleeve, does he really need to?

I love the idea of Neil being the really dangerous one rather than Andrew and the Foxes all being Shook and Andrew being a gay disaster over it

DinLuke Hot Take
So I've seen some posts going around regarding characterization of this pairing, specifically Din, but I wanted to put my two cents in for the other half of the pairing.
Luke.
As much as I adore the Sunshine X Grumpy dynamic (and they are the epitome of that dynamic cmon) I do see a large amount of folks pushing the 'Sunshine' trait to the absolute max that it almost takes away Luke's autonomy. And in some cases infantiles him. That's not good.
This man is a war veteran, martyr in the making, the 'Last Jedi' as of the ROTJ/Mando/BoBF timeframe. He's seen and done things that have proven his mettle many times and left him scarred both emotionally and physically. Most importantly he's a full-ass adult with complex emotions and traumas that affect his relationships.
The beauty of this pairing for me is seeing how the typical 'Sunshine' character can still carry that darkness and learn to confront it and grow with those emotions as opposed to detach themselves from it (looking at you sequels). Din, being emotionally repressed but in a different manner, gets to grow with Luke as opposed to Din just taking care of Luke's issues 'magically' by being with him. It doesn't work like that and can too easily read as problematic.
In my mind, Din falls for Luke both for his strengths (looking that hot in Gucci and Chanel while kicking ass is peak Mando bait fight me) but also for how he carries his faults. How they've made him grow and mature into the badass warrior he is while still leaving him kind and compassionate. He wants to be there for his weakest days but only when Luke learns to ask for it. And simultaneously, he learns to be a more compassionate and forgiving person by proxy.
Fuck I love this pairing ;;
