gonna rant a bit

i am so sick and tired of the exclusivity of gaming spaces. any game that isn’t soulslike or a cod remake is often written off (unless it’s indie, but those are different) i’m someone that enjoys simple games. yes, i like story-heavy and immersive games, but i also appreciate the value in a game that’s just plain fun. games like wukong are very good, but are also relatively niche in the grand scheme of things.

in case you haven’t guessed, this is about astro bot. imo this game 100% deserved goty. i understand that this game isn’t for everyone, but it upsets me to see so many people write it off for being a “kids game.” astro bot had the highest audience rating out of any of the nominations. that counts for something.

astro bot was my favorite game of 2024, so i’m a little biased. i understand being upset that your favorite game didnt win, but writing it off as just an ad or a mario rip off spits in the face of all the talented people that clearly had passion for making the game. having similar mechanics to mario does not make it a mario rip off, it makes it a part of the 3d platforming genre. yes, it is clear some elements are inspired, but saying everything was a direct copy is silly. mario did it first, but others can still do it better. no one cares when the hundredth cod remake comes out, but having a 3d platformer that isn’t mario or indie is blasphemy.

plus, there are so many original things to astro bot. for example, the controller haptics are absolutely insane. i loved playing the game sometimes just to feel the haptics. sony incorporates the controller in their games in ways i’ve never seen before, not even with the switch.

it just upsets me that so many people are so angry at astro bot for winning. i understand if you didnt like it, i understand if you liked the other nominations better, but astro bot won. i think it was earned.

to give a short perspective on how engaging this game is for the average person, this is something that happened the other day. my mom has never been big on video games. the last time she played was in the 1990s with her brother. when she saw me playing astro bot, she not only stopped to watch me for over an hour and a half, she asked to play. this is a woman who hasn’t touched a video game in almost 30 years, and yet she asked to play this game

that is the point i’m getting at. a lot of triple a games are really good, but they aren’t easy or accessible for the average person. even now, i’m apprehensive to get into games bc i am intimidated by the toxicity of the community. i don’t always want to play a 50 hr walking simulator. i don’t always want a super realistic art style. sometimes i want something cute, something simple.

Have you read Mark Winegarder’s Godfather books, would you consider them canon, and would you recommend them to someone who’s only read Mario Puzo’s book?

I haven't read them due to two reasons and I'm remaining quite firm on those, tbh:

It's not canon - I'm very well known for keeping my own fics as canon as possible, trying to hit that 100% mark on all canon events and character personalities. Even when interacting with other fandoms and if I chose to read a fic, I would only ever go for something officially canon. Mario Puzo wrote the original, classic Godfather that is all I know and want to know.

It's poorly written - Just from reading the summaries alone, I'm like what the actual fuck? Michael Corleone, THE Michael Corleone that is, dating a girl Fredo slept with? In WHAT WORLD would events like that ever be canon or happen? 😭 Winegarder is so far detached from the world of the Godfather that those books are basically blasphemy to me.

I wouldn't recommend them to anybody because that's just disrespectful, LOL.

another small batch of game reviews. this time i played through Princess Peach Showtime, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and Pikmin 4!

Princess Peach Showtime: 5/10

unfortunately i am not the target audience for this game! i am no longer a child! the concept is cute as hell but DAMN is this game numbingly simple. the simplicity isn't necessarily a bad thing; i can see this being a great entry to video games for younger children because there's nothing terribly complex going on, but it does mean that it's not fun for OLD PEOPLE like me.

phantom thief peach was probably my fave. the detective levels were the worst. i thought patisserie peach was also neat. sword, kung fu, and superhero all felt somewhat redundant to one another. there were a lot of neat concepts in there and the levels were short enough that it never got outright boring, but it also means that imho this game isn't worth 60USD and only has that price tag because of the nintendo/mario brand name (i didn't buy it, it was just a library loan). i could see this being a Barbie game, honestly. it's not a bad thing ftr!

somehow, Yoshi's Crafted World is more challenging and complex than this game.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze: 6/10

i'm sorry if i'm committing some kind of blasphemy by admitting i didn't fully enjoy dkctf but......... yeah.... full disclaimer, the only other DK came i've ever played was the one with the bongos on gamecube lol.

the level designs and music were both impeccable and i love the vibrant atmosphere, but the controls?? look, maybe DK games are just slippery by tradition but i wouldn't know that, i only know how to play bongos, man. i had heard that this is a hard game but the difficulty feels contrived from slippery, unreliable controls rather than the actual platforming.

to compare; celeste has tight controls but a high difficulty because of how precise your movements need to be, and hk's path of pain is difficult for the same reasons, while tropical freeze feels difficult because sometimes donkey kong will slip on an invisible banana and clip an enemy by his toe and get hurt and fuckin die even if you meant for him to jump away out of a roll, which he does not, because he gives no fucks.

there are clear distinctions between challenges that are difficult in a fun way and challenges that are difficult in a frustrating way, and unfortunately dktf ended up being the latter for me. skill issue!

Pikmin 4: 9/10

since i only have pikmin 3 under my belt for comparison... 4 is definitely easier and more forgiving imo, even when it comes to the big bosses. it's not a bad thing! sometimes i don't want pikmin to die!! i love the abundance of treasures and olimar's side story and the dandori challenges, buuuut i wish enemies would respawn in the overworlds and not just the caves. it does make returning to grab remaining treasures a lot easier, but it also means there's 0 reason to revisit an area once you 100% it, which is kind of a bummer.

i also did NOT like how much tutorial and beginning exposition there was, so i knock a point off for that. everyone pls stop talking i just want to go out and throw pikmin at things.

at first i didn't really like how you're limited to 3 pikmin types, but i kind of got used to it after a while. i also wish there were more dandori battle options like with customizable pikmin teams, but i thought the gathering challenges to have more replay value anyway. the endgame dandori challenges are hellish but excellent!!! that's what i'm talking about when i talk about challenges that are difficult but fun!!! i want more dandori!!!!!!

Okay... this is gonna sound like blasphemy, but istg if I dont get this out into the world for people who care to read about Im literally going to go insane, so here it goes. I think Felonyglob is kind of boring. Don't get me wrong they're still a really cute couple! I just. Don't find their relationship all that interesting. Like there isn't all that much to explore in their dynamic.

I think most of the problem lies in Felony Carl not really being all that interesting on his own? Like, he isn't meant to be his own character. He has no depth. Which is okay! Not every character needs to be fully thought out or layered, but typically, the better thought out a character is, the more interesting their relationships are. Felony Carl, right down to his NAME, is really just a joke character. The joke being the juxtaposition between his appearance as a big strong criminal biker guy vs his emotional maturity and comfortability in who he is. He's kind of a cardboard cutout of a man. And instead of his relationship with Globby adding anything to his character, he ends up falling victim to the age old trope of "token love interest to motivate the main character". Like, the Princess Peach to Globby's Mario(it was the first example that came to mind don't @ me andnfnsmsm), minus the damsel in destress stuff. Granted Mario isn't all that interesting of a character either but yOU GET THE POINT RIGHT- Felony Carl just kind of falls flat. I was initially gonna drive this point home even further by comparing him to a really similar, and much more interesting, character, Brock from the Unikitty show, but this paragraph is getting long so I'm just gonna leave it at that. He's also really hard to ADD depth to because we just don't get that much info on his backstory outside of how he used to be named Misdemeanor Carl and that he has a good enough relationship with his father to willingly attend his birthday, which really isn't much! There's nothing interesting about this man to latch onto and expand upon without teetering dangerously close to OC territory!

Now, like I said before, having flat characters is fine. It's kind of a necessity, actually. If every single character in every single show got their backstories fully explained to us then there would never be time for any kind of. Plot. Ever. And, for normal viewers of BH6tS, Felony Carl being flat is perfectly okay, because he really had nothing to do with the main cast. But for ME, a weird little freak who likes to pretend BH6tS is actually The Globby Show(the amount of times I've rewatched literally only the episodes with him in them is evidence enough), Felony Carl is a lot more prominent because, to my eyes, he's technically the main love interest of the show. And he's just. So boring. Funny, but SO BORING.

Now, I am ABSOLUTELY not saying you can't still enjoy this pairing. Literally doesn't fuckin matter. I get the appeal, hell I've made stuff for the ship and have plans to make more! I just think it would be fun to explore Globby's potential dynamics with less one-note characters, y'know? Like, there's an ABUNDANCE of interesting adult characters in BH6tS and the only other Globby-related pairing(bcuz remember I only ever pay attentioj to Globby related stuff) I ever see is Globby x Honey Lemon. Which is a fine pairing, and they do have an interesting dynamic(and before you say that pairing is problematic it fucking isn't Honey Lemon is 21 and when your a consenting adult a 20 year age gap is literally fine omfg), but I think we should get more CREATIVE with it!!! And by we I mean people who. Like to think about Globby and put him in Situations. Actually maybe I'm the only person who really cares about this there's only like one other person on here that posts about him regularly... downsides of having super obscure interests, I guess.

But yeah if anybody wants to like... build up some fun cool ship dynamics between Globby and other characters my dms are always open hehe. This post was actually just a really longwinded and dressed up way for me to ask if anybody wants to talk about Globby ships with me. Sorry not sorry I just want more excuses to talk about this man-

My top 10 unpopular opinions.

10. Sevendust is one of the best Metal bands I have listened to I genuinely love Sevendust, but while the band has many fans, some of us can agree that they don't quite get the recognition they deserve, and because of that, several have indeed labeled them as underrated.

They have a great unique sound that is very heavy yet melodic, and they're one of the few bands that haven't really changed their sound all too much, and yet they still come off as great and fresh...that's just me though.

9. Double Dragon (Neo Geo) is one of the most underrated fighting games I have ever played I love the Double Dragon games (most of them, anyways), and this gem for the Neo Geo is no exception.

It's loosely based on the Double Dragon movie (more on that later), and yet it actually does a great job at making the film universe seem very cool, especially as an alternate take on Double Dragon. Beyond that, it's a fun Street Fighter II-esque fighting game, which is ironic because it's published by SNK (Capcom's long-time rival behind The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown among others).

Definitely a much better Double Dragon fighting game than Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, and it helps that it was developed by Technos Japan aka the company behind the original Double Dragon arcade games.

8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is overrated I used to like this movie, but upon rewatch and reflection? I realize just how cringe and obnoxious it was.

Every single character is unlikable, especially Scott Pilgrim himself, and I didn't find it all that funny. It does have a great visual style from Edgar Wright as well as some cute easter eggs for video game fans, but that's not enough to salvage it.

7. Pineapple on Pizza is fine While not my favorite topping of Pizza (I prefer Pepperoni and Meat Lovers), Pineapple Pizza is not as bad as some make it out to be, especially when compared to Anchovies.

6. The old Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon and Street Fighter movies are not the worst The first few live-action movies based on video games pre-Mortal Kombat (1995) get quite a horrible reputation among fans, but as a fan of the games they are based on, I can still watch them.

Yes, they are very loose takes on the classic games, which is largely one of the main reasons why fans hate them, and yes, they're not technically great movies either, but they can be very amusing, especially in that guilty pleasure/so bad it's good way.

I can still let them pass for at least trying to make video game adaptations work, especially since they were among the first examples of the concept. We did get better video game movies, especially the animated Mario and Street Fighter II movies, but believe it or not? We also got much worse examples (such as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and the adaptations directed by Uwe Boll).

5. I never got into the MCU's depiction of Spider-Man I love Spider-Man, especially the first two movies by Sam Raimi, but I never really got into later Spider-Man movies beyond them...well, except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is honestly the best Spidey flick since Spider-Man 2 (I have yet to see Across the Spider-Verse, but I have heard great things).

Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker did get a lot of praise, but I never really liked him all that much. To me, he was kind of a wuss. I recognize that he does mature by the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but while it was nice to see him with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield on screen, I had already lost interest in the MCU by that time.

If you like the MCU Spider-Man movies? That's perfectly fine.

4. Street Fighter III and Mortal Kombat X are some of the most overrated fighting games ever Some will scream blasphemy since I am a massive fan of both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, hence my nickname Ryu Kang, but I never got into these particular installments.

They were both aiming to be focused on the new generations of both franchises, similar to Tekken 3, which I felt did that concept much better. The two games get a lot of love, especially among tournament players, but they're not my cup of tea, and I do prefer other Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) is one of the best incarnations of the TMNT franchise I love the TMNT franchise, whether it'd be the 80s cartoon, the first two live-action movies from the 90s, or some of the video games like the two arcade games by Konami and Shredder's Revenge.

While the 2003 cartoon has a fanbase, it's also one that tends to be pretty underrated, especially in later times. I love how it aims to be darker and mirror the original comic books while still working within the parameters of being a Saturday morning cartoon.

I also have a personal attachment to the cartoon as I used to watch it a lot around 2003-04. Plus, I will gladly take it over later incarnations of TMNT like the Michael Bay movies.

2. Batman Forever and Daredevil (2003) are pretty underrated comic book movies These two movies do get so much hatred, I feel. While neither of them are among the greatest superhero movies ever made, I genuinely feel there was a lot of effort put into them, especially considering that they were victims of heavy studio meddling.

The director's cut of Daredevil (2003) especially salvages that movie, and I would like to see the original cut that Joel Schumacher intended for Batman Forever if they ever plan on releasing it.

I have already written many times before why I feel this way, but in a nutshell...Johnny annoys Sonya so much, and she only warms up to him whenever she's put in danger and he comes in to save the day. Also, later MK games and movies did a poor job handling their dynamic.

While Liu Kang and Sonya never really hooked up in the canon, the interactions they do have really show that the two get along well, and I do feel the pairing has fan art and fanfic potential beyond what I normally do with them.

With that being said, I don't mind Liu Kang with Kitana either (though recent MK games and movies do a poor job handling them too), and I would be biased and harsh if I said that he deserves only one between Kitana and Sonya.

So yeah, those are my top 10 unpopular opinions. If you don't agree with any of these, it's all good. Let's be civil about it.

I have a question for you Brambi and this time it's DK and the Mario movie:

I watched Transparencies's video on how they found the Mario video and Kiki mentioned that critics would score things that are predictable would not get them higher scores. So I thought what subversion could raise such a score, since they aren't all fans of Mario or DK. My thought was that DK, being angry with having lost to Mario and now looking like a lover teams up with Bowser in secret to get even with Mario and also to usurp his Dad to become ruler of the Kong Kingdom while helping him capture Peach, which they do. Of course Mario and Luigi win the day, but how would you find such a twist? Both as a fan of both series and as someone who would look at this without the lense of a fan. I would find that not good as a fan, but without it, it would be a strong and cool twist, but would sit not well with fans. So what are you thoughts? Was what I said blasphemy or did I observed something great?

That would be interesting certainly, but I don't think they would ever make (modern) DK a straight up villain, or anything more than misguided at most. There are a few reasons for this: one is their general branding that ties into the game franchises; DK is a hero of his own series and I don't think Nintendo would want to portray him as evil. And also, there are rumors that they're interested in at least one spinoff movie about the Kongs in general, so DK would need to be heroic there as well. I think they got it just right by making DK a cocky anti-hero and rival to Mario without actually being villainous. There are plenty of ways they could have spiced up the plot, but I don't think making DK a straight-up antagonist would have ever been on the table.

If they had done so, however, it would certainly upset a lot of DK fans! I really liked his portrayal in the movie, but as it is already, some people think he should have been more chill and laid-back as the games often portray him, instead of so hot-headed. I see it as him still being relatively young and coming into his own as the future leader. If they had made him team up with Bowser, a lot of people would have been unhappy, but.... believe it or not, I don't think I personally would have minded too much. Because DK himself is kind of malleable in my eyes and I would just appreciate that this is a different take on him, likely inspired by the original DK arcade before it was written to be that it was supposed to be Cranky in that game.

But I could see why it would upset people, because while many of us consider the movie to be kind of a different canon from the games, the movie is certainly going to influence how more "casual" fans, and also younger children, view the characters- especially when there hasn't been an actual new DK game in so long. So, as I said before, I think making DK evil would have been a bad move and Nintendo knows this.

Now here's what would be crazy, but much more fitting: if it was revealed CRANKY was working in the background with Bowser, to test his son and see if he was a worthy heir to the throne, or something. This would actually be completely in character! The plot of Donkey Kong Land 1 is literally that Cranky called up K. Rool and told him to basically recreate the plot of DKC, to see if DK and Diddy could do it all over again with worse graphics and if people would still appreciate it. I'm not kidding, it's very meta lol

Nintendo is doing a Legend of Zelda film next. Unsurprising given the Mario film's success, but not sure how I feel about it. Always feared a Zelda film would ultimately suck. Could it even work? I mean, are they going to have a mute film protagonist, or are they going to go full blasphemy and make Link speak? I know he technically "speaks" in the games to characters and we just don't hear/read his lines, but it'd still feel so, so wrong to hear Link speak full sentences. Are they going for a dark, Twilight Princess style and make it a more serious film, or are they going goofy, jokey, silly references everywhere in a Wind Waker style? You can mess around with Mario in film and just do whatever, since it's a game all about wacky fun with little story to ruin, but Zelda games have actually strong storylines with some depth. Idk, I just don't trust large film studios anymore with making good, meaningful films. I worry it's just going to be a crappy cashgrab, lacking any depth that a Zelda film deserves.
