My limp wrist isn’t posed like that because I’m gay, it’s like that because it should be resting on the hilt of a sword, but those are unfortunately not allowed in the workplace

Question about the fowl feeds: do you use the same brand/company for your quail food? I want to have quails at some point when I have the space (I know chickens are easier birds but I am honestly scared of them ^^") and I'd like to start planning now, as I can, what I'd need for the birds
Yes and no! There's not a good quail-specific feed available, in any brand that I've found. There are game bird feeds (20-30% protein, 1% calcium) and there are layer feeds (16-20% protein, 4% calcium), and laying quail should have about 24% protein and 2-2.5% calcium. So I end up mixing the Belstra 28% game bird crumble with Kalmbach 17% layer crumble, to get close enough to that amount. I want to switch to Belstra, but I would have to a) pick it up all at once from the feed store that's an hour and a half away when I pick up peafowl feed when I don't have the room in my car for it and b) store it someplace and I don't have enough vermin proof bins for that and the peafowl chow. So I end up just picking up my 800lbs of peafowl feed/grains/supplies, and ordering the kalmbach off Chewy as needed, 2 bags at a time. If you're just keeping a few quail, a single bag of each would last you a long time.

Do you have a recipe for quail you would be willing to share? I saw a six-pack of frozen quail at my local grocery store, and I would love to give them a try, but they're a new-to-me ingredient! Thank you.
I was advised to marinate in ranch and pan fry, by someone that eats wild hunted quail, and I'm told that pan frying before baking is best, but honestly my favorite is quail pot pie rather than eating the quail on its own. They're EXCEPTIONALLY easy to dry out, especially if they are skinless (and mine are because it's too much trouble to pluck)
You chop onions and garlic, put in a large pan, a cup of water (or I use stock I made with quail bones from previous meals, but chicken stock would probably be fine), some salt if you haven't used stock, and the whole quail carcasses. Cover and simmer low-medium until the quail are done through (usually like 45 mins? For me on my stove, you would need to experiment to be sure on yours), turning over once during cooking. While that's going, chop potatoes and start them boiling, then chop carrots and add them halfway through the potato boil so they're not mushy. I thaw some frozen broccoli but don't cook it further, just chop it up. I usually also chop mushrooms up and don't cook them.
Once the quail are done, remove as much meat as you can, chop any large pieces into smaller pieces. You can toss the onions and garlic or drain and hold some back, it doesn't really matter. Drain the potatoes/carrots pot, and put everything into a saucepan with a jar of gravy (I use turkey gravy). While it's warming up, put a crust in a pie pan, and then dump the mix into the pie pan and cover with another crust if you want. Bake for 1 hour at 350F, let cool, and enjoy.
You can leave out pretty much anything you want or swap it for whatever or add stuff. My partner likes peas in his pot pie (texture nightmare for me). The amounts don't really matter for the rest, as long as it fits in your pie pan. I find 2 decent sized redskin potatoes, 4 quail, a few baby carrots (like maybe 6-8 good sized ones not those skinny bitches), a small bowl of broccoli+mushrooms (together) seems to be about right for me.
It does have a different flavor than chicken pot pie, but I like it. Also be REALLY thorough about checking your meat for bones, they have so many tiny bones. I pretty much always miss some little fucker somehow, so don't be surprised if you do, too.
I like mine with a bit of cheese shredded on top!

Finished the base for the first new quail tower, which Sark designed around the trays I wanted to use, and with my actual needs in mind. It will get an auto water system and feeders, once they're in.
Overall, I'm in love with the new design in theory. I can't wait to use it, the feeders are taking an eternity to come in (I ordered them 24 hours ago!!! Eternityyyyy [yes I knew the ship date was not super soon when I ordered them]). We're going to start the next 2 this coming week, and they should fit perfectly at the rear of the barn together.
The cage space is smaller, to fit a smaller poop tray that I can handle alone. It means I can move down to a 1:4-6 ratio instead of 2:10, and have finer control over and understanding of which males make better quality offspring. Both sides of the cage can open, meaning no more shoving half my body into a cage trying to reach the far side. The feeders will be attached to the right hand door, meaning I can front load and save side-to-side space, and not have to worry I can't reach them. Since the doors open horizontally, instead of vertically like the other rack, I will also experience less escapees out the far side while I'm reaching for a specific quail.
He also gave me more space under the cages, so it's easier to pull the poop trays out; previously they were so close to the rollout trays that I would scrape my hands going in or out. No more scraping!

#quail#long post#hmmm. would love to have some but that setup seems hard to get#must do more research.
