Dear, Don. My beloved
Tumblr media
February 7th, 1942.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
You haven't been gone for very long, but it already feels like a lifetime. The baby moves a lot, I think it misses it's daddy more than I do. I'll be sure to write you as soon as I give birth.
How are you? Are they treating you okay? You've always been a strong man, I have not a doubt you'll be okay. Please, try not to think about the accident too much. About your brother, God rest his soul. He would want you to carry on, he was never a vengeful person.
I miss you terribly. The house is so lonely. My dad and brother came by to finish painting the nursery and building the crib. Alex tried to enlist in the Army after you went away, but because of his eyesight he wasn't approved. I have a feeling he envies you, because you get to fight for America. But he's only 19, so naive still.
I'm sure you're very busy, I won't eat up any more of your time.
I love you so very much, Don. Be safe out there, wherever you are.
Your beloved, Susannah.
February 20th, 1942.
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
No words can express how much I miss you and our baby. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you, and the mistakes I made.
I haven't touched a drop of alcohol since the accident.
My crewmates are named Boyd, Gary, Gordo and Red. We call Boyd Bible, since he was in divinity college before he was drafted. Gary is called Grady and Red prefers his nickname over his real name.
We are being shipped to Africa. My crew fights in a tank, I'm the sergeant. We call the tank Fury. The guys found your picture when I accidently left it in the tank. They say you are quite beautiful.
I love you more than anything, my darling, Susannah. Take care of yourself and our baby.
Your beloved, Don.
March 10th, 1942.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
I gave birth today, to a healthy and happy baby girl. Her name is Anastasia Grace Collier. She weights 6 pounds and 2 ounces. My parents are here, my mother will stay with me for a few weeks to help with Ana. Your parents haven't visited or called.
I hope I can go home soon. It hurts to walk. I wish you were here.
How are you? How's Africa? I bet it's hotter than the sun. Try and make sure you boys are eating and drinking water, though I can't imagine it's easy.
I try not to imagine the conditions you're in. My sweet husband, you don't deserve this. Come home to me, I beg you. Baby Ana deserves to meet her father.
Much love to you and your crew.
Your beloved, Susannah.
May 5th, 1942
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
Anastasia Grace, my beautiful daughter is very lucky to have such a wonderful mother. I wish I could hold you both right now.
There's word we'll be leaving Africa soon, but no one truly knows. It's hot here, disgustingly hot. I can't seem to find the words to tell you much else than that.
Bible says he'll pray for you and our baby girl. He also says he prays for our crew to all go home. He means well, but ever since the accident I find it hard to believe in faith. Though, I hope you continue going to Sunday Church. I do miss the church, it always reminds me of our wedding day.
How long are these dear babe letters supposed to be?
I miss you.
Your beloved, Don.
April 10th, 1942.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
Ana is growing like a weed, and she smiles a lot. She cries all night, I'm not quite sure what to do with her during those hours. I fear she'll get sick, my momma says it'll happen eventually.
My dad was in the hospital, I think it had something to do with his lungs. Those damned factories, he ought to retire.
I don't have much free time, my love. Ana is a full time job. I hope you're doing well, I miss you more than anything.
Your beloved, Susannah.
May 30th, 1942.
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
We're in France now. We spend a lot of time in little towns.
How's your father? I hope he's well. Grady caught a bad bug on the boat and shit himself practically every night. It was quite funny.
How's our little Ana? I bet she's growing to be as beautiful as her mother.
There's a lot of work to be done here. I don't have much time.
I love you, my darling.
Your beloved, Don.
June 25th, 1942.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
Daddy died today. The funeral is next week. Ana babbles a lot, I think her first word will be dada.
Momma said I should get a job at the factories. She says I won't be able to live off daddy's inheritance forever, and with you being away, it's almost guaranteed we'll lose the house.
I'm always sad, Don. I hardly have enough will to feed and change Ana. What's wrong with me?
I hope you're well. Be safe.
Your beloved, Susannah.
August 6th, 1942.
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
We're still in France. I think we'll be here for a while. I miss you. Please take care of yourself, and our baby girl.
There's so much to do, I hardly have time to write.
I love you, my precious girl.
Your beloved, Don.
~
January 1st, 1943.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
Our first Christmas and New Years without you. Almost a year since you left us.
Momma sewed Anastasia a lot of different clothes. My favorite is a little pink dress that she's still a bit too small for.
It snowed a lot during the holidays. It was lonely without you and daddy. Alex spent Christmas in the hospital, he broke his leg on a ski trip. How was your Christmas?
I think I'll get a job at one of the factories, my mom said she'll take care of Ana during the day.
I love you so much, my handsome husband.
Your beloved, Susannah.
February 3rd, 1943
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
Christmas and New Years was lonely. Bible sang hymns and Gordo got drunk.
Why haven't you sent a picture of my beautiful daughter yet? I love her more than my own life and yet I don't know what she looks like.
This war is hell.
Your beloved, Don.
May 25th, 1943.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
Tumblr media
Here's a photo of our beautiful baby. She's growing and changing everyday. She looks just like her daddy. She's already 14 months old, can you believe it?
I work a lot. I volunteered as a nurse at the hospital but it was just too much blood. Blood and screaming. I can't imagine what you have to endure, my love.
A new neighbor moved in. Madame Smith passed away nearly 6 months ago, and this new neighbor took over her house. A young man, not married. Mama thinks he's handsome. Mama practically lives with me and Ana now.
I love you, Don.
Your beloved, Susannah.
July 4th, 1943
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
Anastasia Grace is beautiful. I think about you two often. Bible prays for Ana a lot. Gordo and Grady say she's the cutest baby they've ever seen. Red says she reminds him of his own daughter, Mary. I've hung her picture up in the tank. She's my motivation. I think she's everybody's motivation, even though the boys have their own families. Ana is lucky to have such caring uncles. I hope we can all meet her soon.
Your beloved, Don.
~
January 1st, 1944
Dear, Don. My beloved.
I haven't received a letter from you for months. I fear that you've died.
Please, write to me.
Your beloved, Susannah.
March 10th, 1944
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
Happy second birthday to my darling daughter, Anastasia Grace.
Your beloved, Don.
June 3rd, 1944.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
It's my birthday today. Did you forget? I turn 26 today.
Your parents called. The first time since you've left us. They wished me a happy birthday and requested to meet Ana. I'm seeing them next weekend. They want to visit your brother's grave.
Our neighbor, Mark Blanch has invited me for dinner. I told him no. I think that made him quite angry.
Come home to your family, Don. You're missed very much.
Your beloved, Susannah.
October 24th, 1944.
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
We're in Germany now.
This war has ruined us.
Your beloved, Don.
December 25th, 1944.
Dear, Don. My beloved.
Merry Christmas. I miss you.
Ana asks lots of questions about her daddy. I don't know what to tell her, what's appropriate to tell her. Your father has told her that her daddy is away in a fantasy land, fighting bad guys. I wish he didn't tell her that.
I hate this war. Probably not as much as you do, but I hate it. I have a hard time getting out of bed most mornings.
Please, come home.
Your beloved, Susannah.
~
March 10th, 1945.
Happy 3rd birthday to my darling daughter, Ana.
The boys wanted to send her a gift. Gifts are hard to come by in Nazi Germany.
I love you both.
Your beloved, Don.
April 24th, 1945.
Dear, Susannah. My beautiful wife.
I'm going to die. I know it. Gordo, Grady and Bible are dead. Red died a long time ago. We got this new kid, Norman. He looks like my Norman. He reminds me of my little brother.
I want to die, Susannah. My time has come. I have done nothing right in life besides make you my wife. I killed my brother. I couldn't keep my crew alive. I never got to meet my own daughter. I deserve to die.
I have loved you since we children, Susannah. I have never loved anyone more than you. I miss you so much. I've missed you for the last 3 years. I thought about you 24/7. You were my light, my will to keep living.
I'm sorry I can't keep living. Keep living for me.
I love you, Susannah.
Your beloved, Don.
~
Susannah received Don's final letter in the mail nearly a month after it was written. She wrote dozens of letter back to him, never getting a reply. She tried her darndest to find any information she could about her husband, and his crew mates. Upon her failure, Susannah fell into a two year long depressive state.
Ana's grandmother raised her for these two years.
Susannah never forgot her beloved husband, Don Collier. When Anastasia was old enough, in 1957 when Ana was 15 to be exact, Susannah told her everything there was to know about her father. That he accidently killed his brother, that he went to war instead of prison, that he died at war.
Susannah remarried in 1960 at the age of 42. She married Mark Blanch, who was 50. Anastasia never called him dad.
Susannah never changed her name to Blanch.
She died in 2004 at the age of 86.
She was buried beside the gravestone marked for Don Collier in their home town in Oklahoma.
Her gravestone read;
Here lies Susannah Collier. 1918-2004. Beloved wife and mother.

BEST JOB I EVER HAD!
17.10.2014 - 2024
Happy 10th anniversary to my favorite movie with the most amazing cast of all time!
It's probably one of the most underrated war movies ever.
Mostly because people only think about Action and focus on the Tank battles when the movie is actually about the brotherly bond of the Crew and how war affects the Soldiers.
This movie really means a lot to me so I just have to celebrate it with a bigger fan art!

That post going around with Neil Gaiman impersonating Harlan Ellison got me thinking about the time he actually called me. Harlan Ellison.
It was because I'd recently heard the audio of this, and for the first time (and only time) in my life, I wrote to an author because something really, deeply effected me.
Reading it again now, I see that it could have been written last week.
...his name was Norman Mayer, he was a mad saint, and he loved us enough to die for our sins. He was the man in the blue jumpsuit and motorcycle helmet who, at 9:30 AM, Eastern Standard Time, drove his white 1979 Ford van up close to the main entrance of the Washington Monument, stepped out, and began a ten-hour act of humanism that culminated at 7:23 PM with his needless death.
But property is more important than human life.
We are a nation of SWAT teams and too little open conversation.
We are in terrible danger.

(Part 1) Film & TV Recommendations for Halloween
1. Over the Garden Wall (Miniseries, 2014)
Tumblr media
Over the Garden Wall features two half-brothers, Wirt and Gregory, who have become lost in a mysterious wood called The Unknown and attempt to find their way back home.
...
This beautifully crafted animated miniseries is the best thing to come out of Cartoon Network even after ten years. The unique atmosphere, which blends fairytale charm with Gothic eeriness, perfectly compliments the early 20th-century Americana-styled animation. At just ten episodes, Over the Garden Wall is a short but impactful experience that lingers with you long after it ends. I highly recommend this series.
2. Coraline (Film, 2009)
Tumblr media
Wandering her rambling old house in her boring new town, an 11-year-old Coraline discovers a hidden door to a strangely idealized version of her life.
...
This stop-motion animated film is a deeply unsettling and visually stunning experience. Blending a dark fairytale narrative with otherworldly imagery, it presents itself as a psychological horror for young and older audiences alike. Coraline explores the complex ideas about family, identity, and the dangers of wish fulfillment with grace. I strongly recommend this film.
3. ParaNorman (Film, 2012)
Tumblr media
Norman Babcock, a young boy who can communicate with ghosts, is given the task of ending a 300-year-old witch's curse on his Massachusetts town.
...
This heartfelt stop-motion animated film blends humor, horror, and themes of ostracization and acceptance. While blending classic horror movie tropes with a coming-of-age story, it manages to portray strong themes of prejudice by using zombies, witches, and ghoulish imagery. If you're looking for a unique spin on classic B-movie horror, I highly recommend this film.
4. Happy Death Day (Film, 2017)
Tumblr media
A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity.
...
Happy Death Day is an entertaining mashup of slasher horror and Groundhog Day-style time loop storytelling. This film stands out from all the rest of the horror-comedy franchise due to its emotion, mystery, and character growth. While it doesn't push boundaries for horror, it makes up for its uniqueness that balances humor and suspense. If you're looking for a horror-comedy film, I strongly recommend this one.
5. Jennifer's Body (Film, 2009)
Tumblr media
A newly-possessed high-school cheerleader turns into a succubus who kills her male classmates and devours their flesh in order to survive.
...
Though it was sorely misunderstood when it originally came out, it has recently garnered rightful attention for its subversive take on the horror-comedy genre. This film blends teen drama and supernatural horror and uses its genre to touch upon the objectification of women in horror and in reality. Its wit, self-awareness, and social commentary have made it a standout in the horror-comedy genre, and for that, I strongly recommend this film.
6. Sinister: Recut (Film, 2012)
Tumblr media
Ellison Oswalt is a struggling true-crime writer whose discovery of snuff films depicting gruesome murders and strange supernatural elements in his new house puts his family in danger.
...
Said to be one of the scariest films ever from a research study, Sinister is a deeply unsettling horror movie that perfectly mixes supernatural elements with psychological tension. The haunting score combined with the grainy, nightmarish footage of the murders results in an unnerving experience that sits with you long after you turn the lights out. Instead of watching the original movie, I strongly recommend this fanedit version of the film. It elevates the movie by removing some of the cheesy jumpscares and awkward dialog. If you're looking for a genuinely haunting movie this Halloween, I recommend this one.
7. 1408 (Film, 2007)
Tumblr media
Author Michael Enslin, who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences, checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel in New York City.
...
This film excels in building suspense, using minimal special effects, and relying on our main characters' isolation and psychological unraveling to create fear. While this movie isn't as overtly terrifying as other horror films, 1408 offers an eerie, slow-burn experience, blending supernatural elements with personal trauma. The film has two different endings, the theatrical version and the director's cut. I'd suggest watching both to come to the conclusion of your favorite. It's a must-watch for fans of psychological horror, and I strongly recommend this film.
8. Midsommar (Film, 2019)
Tumblr media
A couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
...
This is a visually stunning and disturbing horror film set against the backdrop of a bright, idyllic Swedish village. The movie stands out for its unique approach to horror, unfolding almost entirely in daylight, creating a sense of unease through its striking visuals, unnerving atmosphere, and slow-building dread. Midsommar is a polarizing piece of media, mixing folk horror with psychological drama, and is filled with symbolism and unsettling imagery. I highly recommend this film if you're looking to be disturbed this Halloween.
9. Skinamarink (Film, 2022)
Tumblr media
A young brother and sister wake up during the night to discover that their father is missing and that the windows, doors, and other objects in their house have vanished.
...
Skinamarink is an experimental analog horror film that trades traditional narrative for a surreal, nightmarish atmosphere. Shot in grainy, low-light cinematography, the film immerses you in a disorienting and eerie world where fear of the unknown takes center stage. The film’s strength lies in its ability to evoke childhood fears, using abstract visuals and unsettling sound design to create a sense of dread. However, its unconventional approach may alienate some people who expect a clear plot or resolution. The minimal dialogue and deliberate pacing make Skinamarink more of a mood piece than a traditional horror film, relying on atmosphere over jump scares. For those willing to embrace its experimental nature, Skinamarink offers a haunting and disquieting experience that lingers long after it ends, tapping into primal fears of isolation and helplessness. For all these reasons, I highly recommend that you check out this film.
10. Heck (Short Film, 2020)
Tumblr media
A child wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of his mom's television blaring.
...
Heck is a short film that shares a similar atmospheric approach to the creator's feature-length film Skinamarink. Like Skinamarink, it explores the feeling of being trapped in a surreal, dreamlike space. The film's minimalist aesthetic, with grainy visuals and a haunting soundscape, creates a disorienting atmosphere that leaves much to the imagination. It builds tension through its slow pacing, relying on the viewer's discomfort with the unknown rather than traditional horror tropes. For people who thought Skinamarink's runtime was excessive, Heck is a great substitute that captures the same atmosphere of the former. I highly recommend this film to people who have enjoyed Skinamarink's take on horror.

A novel form of direct action was taken by a woman in Canterbury to get rid of Norman Ellison and one of his comrades: 'She did not want anybody billeted on her and we were not welcome. A series of incidents brought matters to a head, when we found the bolts of our rifles full of jam. She said her child had done it. We wondered, but were moved to another house.'
to be fair, having a couple of random soldiers living in your house doesn't sound like much fun

vi. Backstory
Natalia was born into a family with a work-a-holic father and depressive mother. The girl, along with her older brother, were borderline neglected during their childhood. Natalia herself was never physically harmed, though she was a witness to her father abusing her brother on the daily. The siblings always had a close bond, so much so, Natalia followed Gary into war like a lost puppy.
Natalia adored her brother, she wanted to be just like him. He was her protector, her best friend, not a day went by when they weren't together. There was no way in hell she was allowing her brother to go off to war without her. Now, it was both their duties to protect each other.
•Military Rank•
Private First Class
•Medals•
Africa Star, Silver Star, Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, Purple Heart
•Wounded•
Natalia was wounded by a Nazi soldier at the crossroads. She emerged from the tank into the smoky atmosphere and failed to see the Nazi directly in front of her. She was shot in the right shoulder, and probably would have died if Norman didn't stop the bleeding.
•Death of the Crew•
Grady- Natalia's brother's death was sudden, and brutal. Almost instinctively her hands found their way to his face, cradling him in her arms. It took all of Gordo's might to pull her away.
Bible- Natalia turned to ask the preacher man for a new can, and what she got horrified her. His body lay lifeless, and all she could do was scream his name in agony as tears fell from her eyes.
Gordo- Natalia blamed herself for Trini's death. If she had been fast enough, if her reaction time was quicker, he may have had a chance at survival.
War Daddy- Natalia found herself trying to fix Don's bullet wounds before her own. She was prepared to sit with him until his last breath, but when he convinced her and Norman to escape, she kissed him goodbye before slipping down the hatch.
•TW:SUICIDE•
Dove- Natalia was rescued, alongside her friend Norman. She was pronounced a hero, and sent back home to America. She didn't manage much though, only 5 months after the fate of the Fury Crew, she committed suicide by the use of her own firearm. She left her dog tags on the kitchen table of her parents house as something to remember her by.
