One of the best movies about street patrolling police officers out there. This movie is so raw and real thanks to the mostly found footage approach. That helps you believe in the intimate moments more and the absolute violence that Ayer showcases helps cement just how hard this job is.

Brotherhood and family are two very big themes among police and partners, and this movie definitely highlights that. Gyllenhaal and Peña give two of the best performances that have ever been captured. They are ride or die, and that is easy to believe. Emotional beats are hard to swallow because of the way they build these two men. Everything about their lives is intertwined. No conversation on patrol is off limits. They are through and through brothers.

Allowing the pure violence on the streets of LA is also what creates an ending filled with bloodshed and terror. This is real life. Ayer does not half ass this movie in the way it depicts just how much these cops endure on a daily basis. This is the type of movie worth gravitating towards because it makes you feel the deepest of emotions. It's the type of story that allows a glimpse into a world most of us don't understand. It is very heartfelt in delivering powerful messages about love and loss and how street violence changes the course of many lives daily.
