300 - Collateral Beauty
Tumblr media
We've hit another year of the podcast, arriving at our milestone 300th episode! No better way to celebrate that by finally revisiting one of the past decades most notorious bombs, 2016's Collateral Beauty. Starring Will Smith as a grieving father, this all-star cast includes Edward Norton, Michael PeΓ±a, and Kate Winslet as his three friend who devise a plan to... oust Smith from their advertising firm by... hiring three struggling actors (Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, and Jacob Latimore) to... portray the concepts of Death, Love, and Time that he has been writing letters to, and make him appear mentally unstable. Yeah, this one goes some places!
This episode, we talk about how the film's imbalance with magical realism makes it more deranged. We also talk about Smith's Oscar-chasing dramatic roles pre-slap, Ann Dowd as a felony committing private investigator, and the previous talent attached to this buzzy but ill-begotten project.
Topics also include Winslet joining our 6 Timers Club, Rogue One, and our Best Of ballots for the last year of the show!

Not to make an MCU post in the year of our lord 2023(HOLY FUCK). But they took away the one thing which made Ant-Man movies fun, they were dumb stand-alone movies which didn’t connect to the others in a meaningful way, and thus were free from the world-building bollocks of the other movies. I mean, first of all, for some reason the shrinking scenes in the first movie still look amazing compared to Part 2, I don’t know if he shrinks in the new one. I haven’t seen it, I don’t plan to either. The aesthetic of the first movie, the final fight sequence, was all well done, despite the bland villain and motivations. But most of all, they literally erased his first family, the people he knew before he became Ant-Man. I mean, his ex-wife (with whom he was co-parenting his daughter), her husband(who ended up becoming a good friend), his fucking friends who he ran a company with. HIS LITERAL BEST FRIEND WITH WHOM HE SHARED A CELL WITH FOR 3 YEARS AND LIVED AS FLATMATES WHEN HE WAS UNDER HOUSE ARREST FOR 2 YEARS AS WELL. I mean, take away everything which made the movies fun, throw it under CGI Garbage land, and then act surprised that it doesn’t work.Β
MCU’s white Christian nuclear-family agenda is fucking ruining the few characters that people still loved, and it’s fucking sad.
