it's so hard to write a fic for me because first I need to write it in my mother tongue, edit it and then sit with books and google for a whole 3 hours just to do a normal translation 😩

When Petunia was younger and she learned about potions from Lily/Sev she secretly, on multiple occasions, tried mixing together a bunch of random ingredients (or even stole a textbook and tried to follow the instructions with her limited access to the proper tools and ingredients) in the hopes of proving she had some sort of magical ability.

It obviously didn't work.

Cut forward several years when she shares the embarrassing story with Severus, her now-or-eventual boyfriend, who smiles and asks if she wants to assist him in making real potions.

She does.

(Petunia helping him grow ingredients in their garden?? Petunia being his official assistant and opening an apothecary together?? Starting a family and it becoming a family business that spans several generations??)

wanted to drop in and say i absolutely love how long your fic chapters are!! it is such an integral part of your style of writing and is part of the reason why i love your stuff so much! i get so excited when a new chapter drops to sit and read through it all! don't listen to anyone who says otherwise, write how you want to write because it'll be well-loved and appreciated no matter what :)

I think what bothers me the most about this bullshit is that fanfic is CREATIVE writing. There are very, very few rules. If you want to write a 100 word drabble? Great! Fantastic! You are valid and wonderful. If you want to write a 2 million word slow-burn where your characters don't meet until 500k words and don't kiss until 1 million? Great! Fantastic! You are valid and wonderful.

But there are people out there who seriously think that all fanfic has to look a certain way. Basically they want chapters that are 2-3k words, stories that are plot/action heavy & always moving, and ones that don't have lots of detail. That's a fucking terrible mindset. There is room for all styles and all people so long as those people are doing their own damn work. So that means no Chat-GPT and no reading a ton of other fics, taking bits and pieces from them, and regurgitating them into your own.

And yet so many folks on the Reddit forums have that mindset which is how you end up with posts like this:

"There is an audience for those kinds of fics. Signed someone who wrote a longfic that's 99% two characters talking and yet it's one of the most loved and well received fics in the fandom. CHARACTER STUDIES ARE VALID AND INTERESTING."

It's funny cause I never really imagined that this is the kind of writing that I would end up doing. Dumb, funny smut was easy and now that kinda bores me. What's fascinating is drilling down deep into characters' heads and writing in what's basically real time: minute by minute, day by day. Cause there's so many subtle changes that happen over the course of days and weeks and if you sit and build those changes piece by piece, you can tell a really beautiful and powerful story. And AGGN proves this.

James would say that after years of practice of pulling pranks and having to evade any patrolling teachers he is good at hiding and sneaking around and perceptive enough of footsteps in the dark. Somehow he still doesn’t see the green beam of light hitting him square in the chest coming. Neither does he expect the forearm pressing against his chest, pushing him back into the corner he is hiding in. ��Potter.” It’s no more than a whisper but the tone is sharp enough to make James stand up straighter. “Crouch,” James whispers back. Barty is close enough that James can see the angry expression on his face, even in the dim light. “What’s up?” “You tell me. What games do you think you’re playing here?” “Uh.” James looks around through the dark. “Tag?” Barty huffs and presses closer against James. In the back of his mind James thinks that this would be a great opportunity to have some very intense make out sessions. If it wasn’t Crouch that is. He wonders if Remus and Sirius are making use of the dark. He assumes they are, it’s been more than a week since they last got to kiss after all. “Reggie told me to not say anything to you but someone has to and he’s not going to. You’ve been back for nearly a week. So. What exactly has kept you from talking to your boyfriend? And you better give me a good explanation here.” James doesn’t have a good explanation. He also doesn’t have a boyfriend, not a real one anyway, so Barty’s anger is at least a little unjust, but he obviously doesn’t know that.

Ok so I've been reading a lot of Yugioh Harry Potter crossovers lately. Mainly because they are the whole reason why I even started rewatching Yugioh dm (like I was not about to accept that this damn Harry Potter crossover fic had actually in canon characterization for the Yugioh characters because It Did Not Match Up with my memories from 13 years ago).

Anyway, I think Yugioh and Harry Potter has this great crossover potential because a) everything has good Harry Potter crossover potential and b) their timelines match up. Yuugi is like.... a month and some change older than harry, and that's something you can’t just leave there lying. They can bond!! Over not having normal high school experiences!! And almost dying constantly!! And Destiny!!

But also like would it not be hilarious for Umbridge to get shadow gamed seasson 0 Yami style. I think it would be hilarious, just, she starts seeing everything as pink or seeing the words she writes and/or hears being carved into her skin as her penalty game. I think it would be silly and funny teehee.

Back to the fics, usually they give the gang magic (either going shadow magic route or millennium items gets an upgrade again), but consider. What if. They don't. Yuugi finds himself in Hogwarts and Dumbledore or someone is convinced he can do magic, but he can’t. Poor baby just sits in charms class and tries to levitate a feather, only to be waving a stick and saying nonsense words. No, the person who can actually do magic is Yami, and that's why they got in this situations in the first place, so every time Yuugi needs to preform magic, Yami has to step in and figure out someway to make his half remembered-mostly-instinct-and-completely-different magic do the thing that the teacher wants him to do. Or it could be the route that shadow magic and HP magic are the same, just different branches, and the folks out in ancient Egypt only learned the shadow magic branch. Wouldn’t really help Yami as he tries his damnest to bluff his way through class, but it would be interesting world building wise. Yuugi does all the writing work though, because they’re partners who share th work.

“But Manch,” I can hear the nonexistent voice in my head that might also be you say, “why the hell would the gang be anywhere near the UK?” Well the Fics (tm) usually end up with shadow court or Bakura goes on summer holiday or Dumbledore and Voldemort are eyeing the millennium items. But like, what if Kaiba or someone just hosts a duel monsters contest in London and the gang just get invited for the summer. Then cue deatheaters and then cue the gang getting kidnapped into the wizarding world. Or at least Yuugi. Why did they invite muggle(s) into the wizarding world? Well damn that pendant sure looks useful in this war- wait what do you mean it’s now tied permanently to that boy- goddamnit I wanted to avoid possible kidnapping charge.

Also, I think that the millennium items could definitely just one shot Voldemort. Drag him into the shadow game, he has enough pride to fudge up and end with him yoinked into hell or something. It would be funny.

So yeah, I’ve been thinking too much about YGO HP crossovers, it's been a couple of weeks and I needed to get the Thoughts out. HP crossovers are my guilty pleasure, especially when they are just tearing the HP world apart or are just incredibly silly. Silly crossovers are my favorite.
