it's so hard to write a fic for me because first I need to write it in my mother tongue, edit it and then sit with books and google for a whole 3 hours just to do a normal translation 😩

I would like to propose "geistvoll" as the german equivalent for "brills" cause the words literally translates to "ghost-full"
#dead boy detectives#the struggle is real#Like I'm talking with my mum and suddenly I say “oh brills”#and she looks like I lost my mind#I have but that's not the point#And now I have to say them quietly in my mind while thinking of an alternative way for saying them out loud#thank you charles#charles rowland#non native english speaker#german

pisses me off that there is no formal or informal "you" in English. bc the transition from one to another in the context of sebaciel would be so fucking good. it feels unnatural for Sebastian to be informal with ciel but! if he is, it will be so easy to show it with a simple "ты" instead of "вы" 😡
at the same time I can appreciate the ambiguity of "you", it can mean fucking anything and it's kinda cool.
P. S. Ig the same effect can be achieved by just using his name instead of title but guysss it's different... 😕

I am being infected with Edwardian slang by my old lit-reading boyfriend and the Letters Regarding Jeeves substack, and I can't help but apply it to TGAA to torture Barok with it.
He can stand Iris's Edwardian vocabulary (with her being a detective and a writer of serials, I feel like she'd easily pick it up in her businesses) and Albert's occasional "Barok, old bean" because it's his dear Iris and Albert after all, but Barok will not tolerate Herlock's "Tally ho!", "Pip pip!" and "Reapy, old horse!" and will refuse to speak to him until he returns to proper address and Standard English.

if anyone is ever curious why i'm only calling the coffee shop in my coffee shop au a coffee shop half of the time, and a café the other half...
It's mainly because a coffee shop in the netherlands doesn't sell coffee but something completely different.
and i'm just struggling to write it because it's so counter intuitive

sometimes being a non-native english speaker on the internet is just writing a fic and going "no no guys i know this is a bit bad but i'm such a good writer in my native language trust me guys i swear" the whole time except i have no way to prove it because it's not like anyone would you know, know my native language
#💌 personal#not that i blame anyone for not knowing my language polish is incredibly hard to learn (especially if your baseline is english)#and also not very useful unless you have some very specific life plans and/or are an insane linguist#but it is sad to me how being a non-native english speaker means that you have to spend your whole life desperately trying to prove#that you are just as smart and as funny as the native speakers#and how youre made to feel stupid by westerners who have never even tried to learn another language#wow okay#idk why we have gotten so existential here but alright!#anyways!#i usually try to not talk badly about my art because i don't think that's very useful#and i'm pretty proud of the things that i do manage to write!#but writing in english feels like pulling teeth sometimes#in a way that goes beyond the fact that i simply don't have as much practice#it's just. it's not a language that i FEEL it's not in the same place in my soul as my art is#everything i write in english is filtered and detached in a way#and sometimes i just wish i could show people how my writing looks when i'm not struggling#when it's not detached from me but the purest expression of what's in my head#it's not that i'm insecure about my writing#it's that writing in english feels like putting on a front

Heyo chapter 2 is here!
Summary:
“HOLY SH-” Miles and Gwen simultaneously turned to cover Pav’s mouth so as to not alert the creature in the middle of the carnage below them. The creature either didn’t hear him or it was too preoccupied with whatever it was doing. To his regret Miles soon realized what that was, as another wet snapping noise broke the silence once more. The creature was crouched down on all fours over what Miles assumed was the body of an officer, though it was so mutilated that it was hard to tell for sure. Its head was buried into the chest of the body beneath it, another wet snapping noise emerging as it pulled out a couple of ribs between its bloodied jaws... Or The Spider-Gang goes looking for Hobie. They don’t like what they find.
We finally get to meet the dude that gave me the motivation to write this fic in the first place!

Okay so idk if anybody has said this but if you're a writer whose native language isn't English and when you're writing and you often find yourself using the same word over and over again, I recommend you google the synonyms for that certain word.
It seriously helps a lot by broadening your vocabulary because the meaning will be similar but it's not going to be the same word constantly, and if you wanna take it an extra step, you can view the antonyms as well, that way you'll be learning its opposition words too.

I've mostly gotten over my grammar stickler ways from my youth because sometimes switching your/you're for the bit is funny and who give a shit anyway.
But boy is switching affect/effect common and boy does it piss me off.
#I think it might be a symptom of them being pronounced basically the same way in USA English#But they're very different cmon#This isn't about non native English speakers doing this is respect you guys so much I understand the minute differences are a bitch to learn#There should be a dedicated website for it the way there is for the spelling of the word definitely which I also struggled with sometimes

Maybe it's the slav in me but articles are so pointless. Who needs a definite article just say 'this' if you want to specify whether you mean it in a definite or indefinite way. Grow up
#for legal purposes this is a joke#im just. every time i learn a language that uses articles i struggle at least a tiny bit to grasp them#and i would be struggling more if it wasnt for English#and in English the choice to use or not use the article is so significant sometimes but the effect most of the time wont be some drastic#change in meaning it is just 'it will sound wrong/weird/funny'#i swear they exist only to taunt non native speakers#yes slavic languages have noun and adjective declension that's 60% irregular#but that at least allows you some sexy things like a completely free word order
