so i'm doing these songs posts weekly now instead of monthly to hopefully, 1. make things feel a bit more fresh and relevant and 2. cover more songs!! chose a pretty uneventful week to start doing this tho!! i also threw in two songs from the tail-end of last month at the start of this because they rule and i wanted to shout them out. anyways, enjoy!!! also feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter <3
"HEATDEATH" - NOISE ARTIFACT
β released: June 28, 2024 β genres: electronica, indietronica
I was going to add this to my post from last month, but I hit the image limit!!! I had to shout this out somewhere on here though, so I'm doing it now. I found out about this song and NOISE ARTIFACT on Twitter. This is some really solid, furry, indietronica with some incredible synth-work. Also some really raw and confessional songwriting which sounds suffocating under all of the electronic instrumentation. Really digging this song, definitely gonna keep an eye out for more of her stuff in the future!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Lift You Up" - Jessie Ware & Romy
β released: June 30, 2024 β genres: diva house, dance-pop
This was also released at the tail-end of June, but I'm counting it here! Jessie Ware teams up with The xx's Romy for a sleek diva house cut. I've loved Ware's last two records and I've recently been going through The xx's catalog - in which Romy is always a highlight. These two just have such a fun dynamic. That chorus is also electric. This just makes you want to move!!!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Ever Seen" - beabadoobee
β released: July 1, 2024 β featured on This is How Tomorrow Moves (not yet released) β genres: indie pop, folk pop
This is fine! Nothing too exciting about this track unfortunately. This shift into more folk stylings has kinda proven to be a bit of a detriment to beabadoobee, although I did enjoy "Take a Bite" a good bit. These songs just sort of make her feel like another face in the crowd. The unique presence she had across her last album isn't here on a lot of these new tracks. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how the album plays out!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Lithonia" - Childish Gambino
β released: July 2, 2024 β featured on Bando Stone & the New World (not yet released) β genres: psychedelic rock, alternative rock, psychedelic soul
I'm of two minds on this new Childish Gambino single. In one mind, I feel like this song is overdramatic and suffocating to its detriment. In the other, imagining this in the context of his new album and film on the way it could be a very climactic high. I guess we will see, but for now I'll just say I like it. I never really dove into his last album, nor its re-release, but I've been waiting for Donald Glover to make more wild, psychedelic stuff like Awaken, My Love so this is definitely a step in the direction I want.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Tobey" - Eminem, Big Sean, & Babytron
β released: July 2, 2024 β featured on The Death of Slim Shady (not yet released) β genre: pop rap
Irritating in different, a bit more tolerable ways, than "Houdini," which had all of the millennials doing cartwheels, but I'm still not really wowed by this. Eminem is usually the worst thing about an Eminem song so having him obscured by both Big Sean and Babytron, two other Detroit rappers, does make this a better listen. Still nothing remarkable, they sound awkward as hell over this beat. My hopes for this album are not high at all, but such is the case for Eminem past the 2000s.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"HUMBLE ME" - Killer Mike
β released: July 2, 2024 β genre: southern hip hop
Killer Mike is frustrating. He's a good rapper and a razor-sharp writer who occasionally has precision many of his contemporaries do not - but then he'll do something totally contradictory and dumb. Anyways, this new song has him tackling his arrest at the Grammy Awards a few months ago after he won Rap Album of the Year among other things, it's just a general hype-up song. It's fine, nothing too special.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Tough" - Quavo & Lana Del Rey
β released: July 3, 2024 β genres: trap, alt-pop, alternative r&b
Quavo and Lana Del Rey collab for the second time in their careers, the first time being on Lana's Lust for Life record, for a song that is pretty decent. Lana has been teasing her country era following her wonderful album from last year, which was my second favorite album of the year, leaving me with a lot of trepidation. She slides on this track, cowgirl boots and all, to do her thing - or maybe "thang" depending on how country she goes from here. Quavo also delivers a decent performance and the two have better chemistry than you would expect. The bridge and the chorus towards the end are easily the highlight of the song, I love that part even if the song on the whole doesn't fully grab me. Not sure where this leads for either artist, this could just be a fun one-off!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Overture" - The Voidz
β released: July 4, 2024 β featured on Like All Before You (not yet released) β genres: ambient, neo-psychedelia, chillsynth
Not much to say about this song, it's basically a minute-long teaser, but The Voidz are returning for a new album soon! This single is kinda pointless so I hope we get something a bit more substantial in the weeks to come. Reminds me that I also need to revisit their last album, I remember liking a good bit of it.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"JOYRIDE" - Kesha
β released: July 4, 2024 β genres: romanian popcorn?, dance-pop, dutch house
Kesha has been embroiled, unfortunately, in more drama surrounding her and Dr. Luke as he seems to have produced a washed-up popstar's comeback single about women empowerment that is set to drop in a few weeks. Sorry, didn't mean to get involved myself. Kesha cuts through all the noise with this crazy dance-pop, house cut with accordions and whatnot. It's ... a lot. I'm not sure if everything works, but it certainly sounds interesting. She carries herself like a diva here, but it's over this goofy house beat. Y'know what? It kinda rules. You go girl!!! The accordion is making a comeback!!! Be on the lookout!!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
"Worldwid3" - femtanyl feat. zombAe
β released: July 4, 2024 β genres: industrial hip hop, digital hardcore
In celebration of hitting 100k subscribers on her YouTube channel, rising digital hardcore artist femtanyl dropped a new song with zombAe. This is a fun little song with some cool production moments, which is to be expected given her past work. The main focus is zombAe's rapping and she does a good job, although I do wish there was a better balance between the two artists. This mostly just feels like a fun one-off.

I don't know what fucks me up more, the fact that Constructs just have a Secret Ribcage Pocket for storage or the fact that it's so underutilized that MB forgets an entire FutureTech WiFi Extender in there for an absurd amount of time. Alright, so Iβve been working on this for a while. Pizza tower got me all inspired so I went ahead and sat down and made a very large selection of Magic the Gathering cards for it. I did my best to make sure that the cards had well representative effects and such and are kinda balanced, but I have not tested any of them. You are more than welcome to try them out with your playgroup if you wish, and feel free to let me know how they turn out. :)
For those confused with how Pizzaface/Pizzahead works, they are two sides of a transforming double face card, Pizzaface is the front and Pizzahead the back.
As well, tokens for all these cards are under the cut and I used a local version of CardConjurer. I followed this tutorial to set it up. If you want to get the cards with 1/8th in bleed and the cardconjurer file you can get them here.
I did not make any of the card art by myself, and I sourced it from other artists. Artistβs names are in the artist description of each card and links to each of their pages are bellow. Direct links to the art used are hyperlinked in the name of the card bellow, and other links to the artist are after that.

What's Wrong With New York? - The Dare
β released: Sept. 6, 2024 β genres: new rave, electroclash, dance-punk
The Dare's debut is a well-produced, yet gimmicky dive into debauchery made by someone who would rather be at home listening to The Smiths on vinyl and reading some highly acclaimed postmodern literature.
my review of What's Wrong With New York?

Manning Fireworks - MJ Lenderman
π₯ BEST ALBUM OF THE MONTH
β released: Sept. 6, 2024 β genres: alt-country, slacker rock
MJ Lenderman's songwriting is drenched in personality and, above all else, very effective. he can make u laugh one moment and then deliver a line that hits u like a truck the next. his new record is fantastic.

Endlessness - Nala Sinephro
β released: Sept. 6, 2024 β genres: jazz fusion, space ambient, progressive electronic
with her brilliant sophomore album, Nala Sinephro has made a strong case for being perhaps the most exciting composer in both jazz and electronic music in the current decade.

Cascade - Floating Points
β released: Sept. 13, 2024 β genres: tech house, IDM, progressive house
a few years after his magnificent collaboration with the late Pharoah Sanders, the new album from Floating Points is a retreat into the world of house music that has him further refining his skills.

My Method Actor - NilΓΌfer Yanya
β released: Sept. 13, 2024 β genres: indie rock, indietronica, bedroom pop
NilΓΌfer Yanya's amazing new record is defined by a bustling intimacy and warm, minimalist instrumentation that make these songs feel visceral in unconventional, but incredibly satisfying ways.

143 - Katy Perry
β released: Sept. 20, 2024 β genres: dance-pop, house, pop rap
Katy Perry hoped everyone would fall for this self-serving and desperate attempt at a comeback record so she wouldnβt be relegated to obscurity and the occasional greatest hits tour for the rest of her career.

In Waves - Jamie xx
β released: Sept. 20, 2024 β genres: house, future garage, progressive house
Jamie xx has returned with an album full of life-affirming house bangers that can inspire optimism even in those who are poisoned by cynicism.

The Thief Next to Jesus - Ka
β released: Sept. 19, 2024 β genres: drumless, east coast hip hop, abstract hip hop
this new record from Brooklyn rapper KaΒ is one of the most thoughtful and powerful rap releases of the year. everything from the lyrics, to the themes, to the storied production leaves a profound effect on u.

SOPHIE - SOPHIE
β released: Sept. 27, 2024 β genres: EDM, bubblegum bass, ambient, dance pop, tech-house
the polarizing posthumous self-titled record from the late great SOPHIE is unfortunately a mixed bag. it's packed with ambitious ideas that unfortunately don't stick the landing.
my review of SOPHIE

13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips - Xiu Xiu
β released: Sept. 27, 2024 β genres: experimental rock, neo-psychedelia, post-industrial
Xiu Xiu's fourteenth album ranks among their best. it's concise, brilliant, and insane containing some of the strongest material of their storied and ambitious catalog.
my review of 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
this section will be used to briefly discuss projects i didn't write full reviews for, but i still want to shed some light on. beginning with ...
RAVEPOP - r u s s e l b u c k
If you're in the mood for some playful, eccentric furry dance music look no further than RAVEPOP. There are some heaters on this thing. Namely the bouncy party-brained "TOO MANY PEOPLE" and the in-your-face stylings of "EVIL MUSIC for BAD DOGS." There's a lot to enjoy on this relatively short record. Not every song hit for me, but I think it's worth checking out!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Russell Boring - JOBA
I was really looking forward to this record from BROCKHAMPTOM alum JOBA. The singles he released leading up to it were some of the strongest post-BH material from any of the former members. Unfortunately, those songs ended up being the clear highlights on the record. While not a bad record by any means, there's just so much potential left on the table. The focus on intimate ballads with a 70s-tinge wasn't the way to go, in my opinion. These songs pale in comparison to the bombastic, glamor of songs like "American Fever" and "People Need People." The latter being the best mixture of both the sweet and the glamorous. Overall, Russel Boring was a little underwhelming, but perhaps I set my expectations too high.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Like All Before You - The Voidz
This record baffled me. This new record from The Voidz is a mess. Julian Casablancas and crew sound asleep at the wheel with these lazy, formless songs that just drone on and on and on. Hardly any song left any kind of lasting impression. It was just a painful listen, each cool moment is undercut by a litany of absolutely sleep-inducing ones. Like the A.I. album cover, Like All Before You feels lifeless and unimaginative.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
log off and go outside!! - NOISE ARTIFACT
This new EP from NOISE ARTIFACT is pretty awesome. A short collection of vulnerable electronica cuts that are full of surprises. These songs balance soul-bearing vulnerability with deeply enjoyable pop songwriting very well. A one-two punch of big feelings and catchy tunes. Definitely give this one a shot!
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Quiet Warp Xpress - RiTchie & FearDorian
A few months removed from RiTchie's debut solo record, which I thought was great, he teams up with 17-year old producer FearDorian for this EP. Quiet Warp Xpress features really cool production and beats, many of them feel pretty ahead of the curve, but what drags this EP down is RiTchie's performances. He doesn't give these beats the energy they deserve. They need a less lethargic presence to breathe more life into them. I love RiTchie's rapping, but this EP feels a bit like a clash of styles.
βββββββββββββββββββββββββββ thanks for reading :3

okay ik iβve said a lot already abt my thoughts on how seoul drift is oooβs most typically 4th gen bg-sounding and least uniquely Onlyoneof track so far and how i wish they didnt go that direction for a title track, but, all of that aside, by god if they didnβt execute it so well by standards of typical 4th gen bg noisy tracks + choreography, bc it rly is such a fun track w interesting layers and vocals, etc, and the choreo has so many interesting points and their performances keep getting better on better, like, the energy, the synchronicity, etc etc etc
also, with regards for it acting as a wrap-up for underground idol, i do feel like itβs a bit more structurally incongruent to ui than iβd like, like i think the mv couldve benefited from a bit more storytelling like the ui mvs, but i also dont think it was ever meant to be, nor do i think it was meant to be, a direct sequel or continuation to the characters in ui, i mean even between ui mvs, they were playing different characters (i.e. kyu playing the teacher in molo/nolo while taeyeob was playing a student vs yolo/kolo), kinda in like an alternate universes type situation, instead of one story, esp since ooo lore and storylines have always been more abt recurring themes in different iterations and contexts rather than continuing one line of lore
and not to engage in like,,extratextual justification or whatever, but i do think tonal dissonance, on some level, can/does serve a purpose, bc like the whole point of seoul drift is that seoul (and loosely by extension other big cities) has a very fast-paced and glittering image that hides the reality of the pain and loneliness that gay youth feel, that feeling of being lost and isolated and wandering, so like part of seoul drift would indeed be abt portraying that fast-paced vibe, in contrast and as an antithesis to the more focused and intimate portrayals of relationships in the ui mvs; whether that dissonance was properly/best executed, i dont Necessarily think so, but i dont think the dissonance itself between the tone of seoul drift vs ui inherently was a bad choice tbhΒ
#ooo#ennuitxt#i have a lot of complex thoughts abt seoul collection bc like#i know ooo can do even more/better#like this isnt nearly as cohesive as for example ip1#but i also know this is under very different circumstances and in a different context from when ip1 was made#and i think they should indeed have room to explore and experiment and we should also have the room to offer feedback#abt the things we liked and didnt like#and yea when i do set aside the more meta criticisms abt the lore/concept cohesion and how#seoul drift does or doesnt do ooo's signature sound justice#it Is a well executed 4th gen bg track and choreo imo#like i Know im biased bc they're my beloveds but#as a 4th gen bg enjoyer in general (as in i like 4th gen noise music a lot of times i'm not a noise music disliker by any means#so what im abt to say is not just an artifact of being a noice music disliker)#i do feel like w such oversaturation in the industry a lot of times the songs and choreos of this vibe are rly lackluster#like for example#i will not lie while i like n/ct's ay-yo /song/ and i usually like a lot of their choreos#i found the choreo kinda boring and generally lacking cohesion and conviction in performance#but i've actually liked seoul drift both the song and choreo more and more with every stage they've done#so u know#there's definitely smth going right#even if it's not everything we wanted/hoped for#this cb season has been v v busy for me since it was midterms week and then right after it's my break rn so im travelling#so ive just mulling over this slowly in bits and pieces in between the busyness
