manchester evening news on an unlikely first public appearance of noel gallagher post-reunion: at a book launch speaking about hacienda days
He spoke on a panel that included Manchester music star Peter Hook who co-owned the Hacienda with New Order and Factory Records, former Hac manager Ang Matthews, Flesh club night promoter Paul Cons, DJs Graeme Park and Greg Wilson and Noel's fellow club "punters" fashion designers Ian Griffiths and Angela Murray and performer David Hoyle. Stone Roses legend Mani had also been due to attend, but had to withdraw due to sickness…
The event on Wednesday night marked the official launch of the Hacienda Threads book which has been compiled by Rebecca Hook. It features previously unseen images of ravers at the Whitworth Street West club as well as memories by a host of punters and famous faces who partied there…
Noel also said of Oasis' performance at the Hacienda (in 1994): "I guess when the band formed it felt like a rite of passage, we played there on the way up like The Smiths. I saw Happy Mondays, New Order and the great Primal Scream there."
Talking about his earlier experiences as a clubber at the Hacienda, he said: "I was the right age, I was 21 in '89 at the time I lived in Whitworth Street so it was the nearest place to my flat. Even at the time we knew it was special."
He added: "'88 and '89 were the two best years of my life, living on Whitworth Street, no one knew who I was."
He paid tribute to Factory Records and the people who helped to build the Hacienda. He said: "The thing about Manchester is it’s just small enough and just big enough. The reason why it [Hacienda] happened is Factory Records.”
"Not many [record companies] have built something for the people of their city. Thank god there were all those people to do it."
Noel added: "People don’t know what they want until you give it to them. It takes a few visionaries to make it happen. There’s visionary people in this town and thank God they had the balls to do it."

emphasizing different things
both noel and liam have spoken about the more... 'unconventional' side of their relationship. but they differ in what they choose to emphasize.
noel almost always emphasizes the ‘illegal’ aspect of it. he’s basically letting everyone know he can break the rules and get away with it. liam is a mere accessory in this situation. he’s the coke in the ‘coke in my cereal’ joke, a mere tool noel uses to convey edginess. noel is like a teenager who’s bragging about getting hammered or doing drugs for the first time.
"Liam's gotten all religious. It''s quite disturbing. He thinks he''s Abel for some weird reason. He wrote a new song called ''Guess God Thinks I'm Abel.'' And I thought, "Right, so you think you're Abel. That must make me Cain. Doesn't Cain kill Abel?" "But then the first line of the song is “You could be my lover. I’m not too sure about that. That’s illegal, innit? It’s kind of illegal for two brothers to make love. It’s certainly frowned upon.”
"Oh me and Liam are head over heels in love at the moment. In some countries it's illegal but when you're on the road it's fine."
paul gallagher said in his book that noel ‘thrived on doing the wrong thing’:
liam’s appearance/physical desirability is another thing noel often mentions.
liam chooses to focus on other things. 1995, earls court:
youtube
he says twice that they *love* each other, the 'had sex last night' line follows as proof/reinforcement of that love.
years later:
early days - undying love, 'how much he loves me':
"Without a doubt. I don’t need to show my undying love for my brother. Listen, I adore that geezer. And I know he adores me. What do people want, me to fucking impregnate him or summat? [fondles huge imaginary bump] He’s only gone an’ got me up the fucking duff! To prove how much he loves me! Twins!"
'need his LOVE':
"I love him, I adore him, more than anyone else in the fuckin' whole wide world."
"I always thought that when he messed with me he was joking, that he really loved me. But I have the feeling that it is true that he does not like me. It is a pity. I love him"

ANYWAY! Today I finished reading the Arsene Lupin book. And now I understand why he's so popular.
He's a dumbass (affectionate) and a Bi-saster.
I love this man oh my god, I guess this is what my OC Noel felt when he stumbled with this book and the whole genre it created.
I even understand WHY I love this kind of genre as well. The one friend who helped me with research before in order to pull Young Prince Detective just awakened something deep and dangerous in me.
I want to make more stuff like this, i love this genre a LOT.
Please bear with Ni and those ideas popping in my mind back and forth.
(i'd like to read the other book, the one which is Arsene vs Herlock, but i dunno if i can find it to buy... the publisher i bought this book seems to not have that one yet...)

ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN (1950)
The second Superman movie serial, starring Kirk Alyn as Clark Kent (Superman, as in the first serial, was played by himself), and Lyle Talbot as Lex Luthor. Ironically, Talbot had portrayed Police Commissioner James Gordon the previous year in the serial Batman and Robin.
Returning from the first Superman serial was Noel Neill as Lois Lane ( role she would never seem to escape), and Tommy Bond (Butch the bully from The Little Rascals comedies) as Jimmy Olsen.
The Adventures of Superman radio series had featured a villain named Atom Man, a Nazi soldier given superpowers via kryptonite, and the most dangerous foe Superman faced on the radio show. Atom Man in the serial, however, was just REDACTED in a metallic mask and cloak, with no superpowers.
The radio version of Atom Man would not make his comic book debut until 1981, when writer Roy Thomas introduced him as the villain in World’s Finest (vol. 1) #271.

To add onto the convo: I like Noel because he seems sweet off camera (i.e Shameless BTS recordings). Sweetness and kindness are things that really draw into people, real life interactions or celebrities. With Cam on the other hand, I felt like the epitome of sweetness was Ian and Cam obv isn't 17 y'o Ian. The contrast between their personalities vs their characters is strong. That's what draws me into Noel, he's so not "mean" Mickey (bc Mickey is soft too but only the viewers and Ian know).
Yeah. Mickey is the role Noel was born to play. And he brought a lot of heart to it, which is why so many people fell in love with his character.
I don't think Cam is an unkind or impolite person in real life. However, Ian did seem like much more of an open book than Cameron is.

27/9/24 Fact or Fiction
Statement #1: You’re excited to see Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns as a tag team. FICTION - Less because of the PTSD of countless "But can they co-exist" storylines so beloved by this week's main character of Netflix, and more because the options are either they crush Zombie Bloodline as that's the most logical booking decision, or they lose to Zombie Bloodline to drag out the storyline until the other logical booking decision which is Cody, Reigns & The Usos vs Zombie Bloodline in a WarGames match where OG Bloodline crush Zombie Bloodline, but either way we still have to watch Tonga Loa matches in the interim and that's the real reason I'm not excited
Statement #2: The AEW All Out PPV was too violent. FICTION - As well as being the most obviously performative "outrage" outside the Arsenal fandom whenever referees don't award them eighteen penalties per match, the pearl clutching not only involves the wrestling culture warriors pretending Mick Foley's WWE career highlights don't exist, but can be summed up by the phrase "Why don't AEW book differently to WWE? NOT LIKE THAT!!!" that makes me wonder if the performative twerps could have survived an ECW PPV
Statement #3: With the reduction of house shows, 5-match PLE cards, bragging about record gates thanks to historically high ticket prices, more on-screen product placements and commercials cutting into matches, WWE is currently practicing some heinous shrink-flation. FICTION - What WWE are actually doing is price gouging to such a degree that even Liam & Noel Gallagher might think it's a little much, and that's been obvious since they charged more for Clash at the Castle tickets than Celtic or Rangers do for a season ticket
Statement #4: Despite having a lot of factions these days, WWE should avoid making a 6-man tag team championship. FACT - WWE should have their own booking ideas, not copy AEW's. That's how it works, right...?
Statement #5: Jon Moxley will defeat Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Title and send him into (semi) retirement. FICTION - The main reason I can't see that happening is, while it would be a logical endpoint to the BCC civil war, it doesn't actually fit Mox's current storyline where he's going after Day One AEW guys who haven't lived up to their potential (as long as we ignore that he started by targeting multi-time TNT champ & former tag champ Darby Allin, for the sole reason that the most logical target Sammy Guevara would see the crowd cheer when Mox merks him as nobody gives a Mile High Club about Sammy Guevara) and it's far more likely that Wheeler Yuta costs Mox the match as that's the most logical thing to happen in the storyline
Statement #6: Pro-wrestling is better when it’s predictable. FICTION - First of all, it has to be pointed out there's good predictable and bad predictable. Good predictable certainly does make wrestling work as that's when storylines culminate at their logical endpoint in the ideal way, for an obvious example Austin overcoming obstacle after obstacle to win the title at WM14. On the other hand there's bad predictable, which summed up most of Roman's Reign of Terror because there was no point getting invested in the vast majority of his title matches as you knew the only relevant part was the last three minutes where Reigns kicked out of a finisher, The Usos interfere, guitar shot, Pedigree, and the nWo stand tall yet again because CENAWINSLOL which is the issue with predictable booking, as for every good predictable booking choice there's a dozen bad ones. Not that booking should always plan to throw a curveball for the sake of throwing a curveball (bro...), but the balance between good predictable and bad predictable is a very precarious thing and all too often it tilts towards being predictable in the worst way possible

DW: Now, recently I was at the Bafta awards and I saw Johnny Marr and I got his autograph. I was so excited. Who would you get an autograph from? Who would impress you still? NG: Neil Young and Bob Dylan.
DW: Have you ever met Bob Dylan? NG: I've never met Bob Dylan but I know Neil Young. We've played with him about four or five times in South America, in Canada and in Paris. He's a top geezer. But Dylan? I don't know whether I'd ever ask him for his autograph or not. I'd definitely go and shake his hand.
DW: Do you know if he knows about you? He probably does, doesn't he? NG: I'd have thought he'd have heard of the name. Whether he's aware of any of the songs or not, I don't know.
DW: There's absolutely nothing known about the real him, is there?NG: Well, he's just put out his book. What's it called? Chronicles.
DW: Have you read it? You once said you'd never read a book. Have you still not? NG: I'm reading a book at the minute.
DW: What book are you reading? NG: I'm not saying.
DW: Why not? It's not that embarrassing, surely. Is it the Bible? NG: No, it's not the Bible.
DW: Is it something like The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole or Harry Potter? NG: No.
DW: What is it? Is it something that won't make you sound cool? NG: No. It's just my missus, Sara... She's got a very superior attitude to books and...
DW: [sternly]: Tell us what book it is. NG: [exasperated]: Noo. I'm not telling you what book it is.
DW: Is it a children's book? NG: No, it's not a children's book. Someone I know was reading this book and I read the back of it and I thought: 'That sounds quite interesting, I'll go and buy that.' And of course I got it back and my fucking superior Scottish girlfriend went: 'That's fucking rubbish, what are you reading that shit for?'
DW: Who wrote it? NG: It's a guy called ... It's a guy called Dan Brown, I do believe. It's called Angels and Demons.
DW: OK! Well that's all right. What does Sara read then? NG: Fucking Proust. I don't know.
DW: So hang on. You're supposed to have never read a novel but you know who Proust is. NG: I know who Proust is but I've never read a book! This is my first ever book. Believe it or not, it is.
DW: What about the Dylan book? NG: I don't know if I can be bothered.
DW: You'd like it. NG: Hmm. I might ask for it for my birthday.
DW: You're 38 on Sunday, aren't you? NG: I am 38 on Sunday. [29 May]

Help! The best one day album of all time
Help! The best one day album of all time On Monday the 4th September 1995, the charity War Child booked Brian Eno and a studio to record an album in a single day. All proceeds went to help the victims of the war in Bosnia/Serbia at the time. The album was mixed on Tuesday the 5thThe album was in shops by Saturday 9th, with no track listing - because they didn't know what artists or songs were going to be on it before the print deadline. The tracklisting was released in the music newspaper NME to help buyers understand what they were listening to. Which, for me, is one of the best compilation albums of all time, and for sure the best done in a day. Here it is, with my notesOasis and Friends – "Fade Away" – the friends are Kate Moss and Johnny Depp The Boo Radleys – "Oh Brother". The Stone Roses – "Love Spreads" – a bit of a rough mix but the piano makes it a unique version of a great song. Radiohead – "Lucky" – this is the first time anyone heard the song. OK computer was released the next year. Orbital – "Adnan". Portishead – "Mourning Air". Massive Attack – "Fake the Aroma" (alternate version of "Karmacoma")Suede – "Shipbuilding" – praise to Elvis Costello for writing this amazing song, but this version is, for me, definitively better sung and produced The Charlatans vs. The Chemical Brothers – "Time For Livin'". Stereo MCs – "Sweetest Truth (Show No Fear)“. Sinéad O'Connor – "Ode to Billie Joe" – possibly the highlight song. Was submitted past the deadline but it was too good to omit The Levellers – "Searchlights". Lol remember them? Manic Street Preachers – "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" – their first recording since Ritchie disappeared. Terrorvision – "Tom Petty Loves Veruca Salt". The One World Orchestra featuring The Massed Pipes and Drums of the Children's Free Revolutionary Volunteer Guards (aka The KLF) – "The Magnificent" – a remix of the Magnificent Seven theme tune. Amazing. Planet 4 Folk Quartet (aka Andrew Weatherall and David Harrow) – "Message to Crommie"Terry Hall and Salad – "Dream a Little Dream of Me"Neneh Cherry and Trout – "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 "Blur – "Eine kleine Lift Musik"The Smokin' Mojo Filters – "Come Together" – this is Paul McCartney, Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller and others. Its literally a who's who of mid 90s music. Everyone who gave enough of a shit to give up a day to record a song was on it. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone just for the music. The charity aspect was a bonus but i can't understand why it didn't start a trend of artists doing low cost high quality charity records. Would love to know if anyone listens for the first time today, or has memories of this coming out. https://ift.tt/hpJv34u Submitted May 06, 2024 at 07:11AM by thecaseace https://ift.tt/cHOnGTa via /r/Music

@allieinarden:
If they want to do grief maybe they should do a story about how learning what it’s like to love and be loved by other people makes her finally understand the magnitude of what she was denied by being neglected by her parents and never forming a relationship with them, when before she couldn’t miss something she had never known.
Yes! I can't remember if I've encountered a retelling that does this, but it would be an emotionally resonant angle.
@fictionadventurer:
Maybe it's because grief is a much simpler character arc. It just requires us to sympathize with her loss and watch her get something new in life to heal that loss. None of the complicated nuance of giving her an arc of overcoming flaws and a bad upbringing.
I can't remember if you said this in your retellings ranking post: Are there any retellings that aren't about grief?
Traditional grief is easy for audiences to sympathize with, but considering how beloved a character Mary has been for over a century despite (because of?) her flaws and upbringing, I think there should be more trust in an audience's ability to care about this child without needing to change her circumstances.
Moongarden by Michelle A. Barry, The Making of May by Gwyneth Rees, and The Painted Garden by Noel Streatfeild do not have traditional grief as a focal point. The Humming Room by Ellen Potter doesn't have so much of a traditional grief arc for the Mary analogue, although it does for the Colin analogue.
@freenarnian:
I can see what you're saying (in that grief doesn't strike me as being The Theme of the book), but people can grieve over things they never had, too. I never met my grandmother, and I've grieved over her my whole life, as something missing from my life and lost from my father's. I think it falls under "disenfranchised grief" and Mary, as a child, may not have the terminology for it, but she very much displays signs of parental absence/loss, as does Colin.
I did not intend to imply that the children are not experiencing grief of any description, and I should have been clear about how I was defining terms. They are not experiencing the kind of grief that the authors of these retellings are talking about, the traditionally-understood sort that comes from losing someone you love. But yes, there is a loss of what could have been, and that's tied in with the concept of emotional neglect, which is frequently accompanied by a sense of something missing. Early in the book Mary observes that she has never really seemed to belong to anyone the way that other children do to their parents; even though she is not mourning her parents' death in the way that she would have if they had been involved in her life, it hurts that she has never had the relationship with them that she should have. And Colin talks about how he believes things would have been different for him if his mother hadn't died; unlike his father, who is traditionally grieving Lillias, his sense of loss is directed more toward what he never got to have.
And I would love it if a retelling/adaptation explored this sort of unfranchised grief rather than getting hung up on shoehorning in the more traditional type.
@e-louise-bates:
It is a particularly curious take given the way the garden's return to life after neglect is clearly meant as a picture of the children coming to life after neglect ... the garden ends up becoming just a tool if the story is about grief, rather than what it is. (Gardening helps them work through grief vs. bringing the garden back to life after its neglect is also the garden bringing them to life after their neglect.)
Yes! The most recent film adaptation did that--reduced the garden to just a tool for working though grief, and I think that's a lot of why that version didn't really work for me.
I've talked about the misinterpretation of The Secret Garden as being about healing from grief before, and I'm still thinking about it and found some interviews with authors of recent retellings that demonstrate this assumption about the story:
Ivy Noelle Weir, author of The Secret Garden on 81st Street: When I was re-visiting the original work, I was struck by how much it is, really, about grieving. Mary, Lord [sic] Craven, and Colin have all lost people, and they’re sort of feeling their way through it and figuring out how to live when you’re grieving. Grief, unfortunately, doesn’t really know an age, and it’s something children experience too. I rooted myself in Mary’s perspective: What is like to be so young and experiencing so much change all at once? If I were her age again, and finding myself all alone in a new place, what would bring me comfort, what would intrigue me, what would be difficult?
Lorelai Savaryn, author of The Edge of In Between (transcribed from a video interview): Actually, in my early drafts, Lottie had a poor relationship with her parents too, and that was one of the moments for me—some things weren’t working, and it wasn’t […] really the story I wanted to tell. So there was a point like three rounds into revisions where I realized to make the story right, I had to have her relationship with her parents be lovely and wonderful, and so I had to completely start over and write the whole thing over again at that point and change that, and I think that that allowed for her grief journey to be more authentic to what people—to what kids for the most part could relate to. I know we can all have complicated relationships with our parents, but I wanted her first experience of loss just to be really true to like someone who had deeply loved, because I think we can all relate to like losing somebody that we deeply loved, so I chose to change that […]
Amber A. Logan, author of The Secret Garden of Yanagi Inn: So when I started thinking of stories to retell (I love a good retelling) and started brainstorming about retelling The Secret Garden I had to ask myself: what kind of elements do I want to pull out of the original? Perhaps it is because The Secret Garden is a children’s book, or perhaps because it is a product of its time, but I’ve always felt that the main character, Mary, wasn’t dealing with enough grief. She just lost both her parents and was shipped to a strange place on the opposite side of the world! I wanted to really pull that grief out and delve into it on a much deeper level. But the original story is about healing and new life, and I wanted to include that kind of bittersweet happiness at the end that only comes about from having survived a dark place[.]
Weir is correct that the major characters have all lost people, but her perception of them as "feeling their way through it and figuring out how to live when you’re grieving" isn't really supported by the text? Mary is not grieving at all because she had more or less no relationship with her neglectful parents. Colin has lost his mother, but he never knew her, so his sense of loss is directed not toward her personally but what could have been. The two of them are "figuring out how to live" but doing so after having never been given the chance to in the first place. Mr. (not Lord!) Craven, meanwhile, spends most of the book wallowing in his grief rather than trying to cope with it; this is a subplot and not the main theme.
Savaryn is telling a story that is unambiguously about grief. It's a perfectly valid story, but her observation that retaining the heroine's poor relationship with her parents undermined the story she wanted to tell is interesting. It didn't work because the themes of The Secret Garden are significantly different from the themes Savaryn is employing. It's not that Mary's "grief journey" is less "authentic" but that she isn't grieving her lost parents because there was nothing about that relationship to grieve, and that's the tragedy of it. Yes, we can all relate to having deeply loved and lost, but that's not the story Burnett was telling, and since Savaryn is telling that story, the choice to use The Secret Garden as an inspiration doesn't seem to me to fit well.
Logan seems to have missed the point entirely. Mary's not "dealing with enough grief" is not a flaw of the book to be chalked up to its time or intended audience; it's a very deliberate choice that Burnett makes to demonstrate the outcome of Mary's loveless upbringing.
And I'm struggling to understand why it seems to be so difficult for so many creators to grasp something that the text makes so clear. Why does everyone want so badly for Mary to be grieving a loss? Is it not bad enough that she has been so emotionally neglected that she has no concept of attachment? There appears to be such determination that Mary must be grieving that the assumption is made that Burnett got her own story wrong and it must be adjusted to correct this failing--when the actual issue is right there, in the text, practically spelled out.
Maybe I should write a paper.
