Famous Authors, Lesser Known Works
Round 3
Terry Pratchett is better known for Good Omens and the Discworld series
"I honestly think this is one of Sir Terry Pratchett's best books, but because it's not part of the Discworld series, it doesn't get much attention. Those who have read it know what I mean, though."
Jane Austen is better known for Pride and Prejudice
"Almost a decade ago she broke their engagement out of caution. Now his sister is renting her house. They’re both pretending they’re totally over the other, but one slip up makes that impossible."

If you could have worked on any of the Old Hollywood movies, which one? Or specifically a director, actor/actress, designer...?
I would have loved to learn from Walter Plunkett. He’s my favorite of the Old Hollywood costume designers, and brought so much originality and fun to his designs—his Singin’ in the Rain fashion show is a parody of his own designs from the 1920s; his quilt dresses in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers combine character and practical storytelling with musical stylization and iconography. I’m also in awe of John DeCuir’s production design and would kill to be able to draw and style to that degree.

This is Loay Ayyoub, a talented freelance photographer and journalist from Gaza. The work he's doing is incredible and more important than ever, but he only has 20k followers on Instagram. Follow him and amplify his voice so that more people can see his work, it's heartbreaking and very poignant
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are more journalists in Gaza than just Motaz, Bisan, Hind and Saleh. They're risking their lives to show the world what's happening, the least you can do is listen and give them a platform
His Instagram is @loay.ayyoub

Connecting with a lesser-known deity was something I never expected to feel so special.
Like don't get me wrong, my bonds with other deities are just as special and I cherish them deeply--
but there was something about having to dig endlessly to find information on Belisama after she reached out to me. There was something about having to intensely look and search and discern until I was 100% certain it was her. There was something about the fact that I've been drawn to thematic light/sunlight since I was a child and there was something about how I always felt a calling whenever I visited large bodies of water.
Especially because she was the first goddess to reach out to me in a very long time, it felt holy in a weird way? Like... after years of wondering why I never seemed to connect with goddesses... after years of worrying that I somehow offended them or caused them to hate me... she found me and she helped me learn how to connect with other goddesses.

"The division between the two families [the Woodvilles and the Nevilles] and their allies can be seen in the royal charters that they witnessed. Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville of York, while serving as chancellor and afterwards, were fairly constant witnesses to royal charters and consequently often appeared together. This was not, however, the case for other family members and friends. From 1466 to 1469, if Scales or Woodville associates like Sir John Fogge, John Lord Audley or Humphrey Lord Stafford of Southwick witnessed royal charters, then members of the Neville group, such as John Neville, earl of Northumberland, or John Lord Wenlock would not, and vice versa. Discounting the ubiquitous Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville, of the twenty-four charters issued between February 1466 and June 1469, twelve were witnessed by men associated with the Woodvilles, eight by men associated with the Nevilles and two were witnessed by no member of either group beyond the two earls at their heads and the archbishop; only two charters, both from 1466, featured associates of both families.
Such striking segregation of witnesses suggests that something more than simple convenience or availability was at play. [...] The evidence of these witness lists does show the extent of the split between the two groups from early in Edward's [first] reign and of the need for political society to work with that cleavage in the heart of the Yorkist regime."
— Theron Westervelt, "Royal charter witness lists and the politics of the reign of Edward IV"
*This is specifically applicable for Edward IV's first reign; in contrast, the charters in his second reign displayed a great deal of aristocratic and domestic unity and cohesion.
#the woodvilles#edward iv#wars of the roses#richard neville 16th earl of warwick#my post#elizabeth woodville#Obviously I hate the idea of Elizabeth and her family being seen as a social-climbing invasive species who banished the old nobility and#drove Warwick/Richard into rebellion and dominated the government and controlled the king and were responsible for Everything Wrong Ever#but I also dislike the 'revisionist' idea that they were ACTUALLY just passive and powerless bystanders or pawns who kept to their#social “place” (whatever the fuck that means). Frankly speaking this is more of a diminishment than a realistic defense.#the 'Queen's kin' (as they were known at the time) were very visible at court and demonstrably influential and prominent in politics#and as this shows there DOES seem to have been a genuine division/conflict between them and the Nevilles during Edward's first reign#(which DID directly lead to the decline of Neville dominance in England though the maintained honored positions and influence of their own)#Especially since Edward's second reign was entirely void of any such divisions - instead the nobility were united and focused on the King#even Clarence and Gloucester's long and disruptive quarrel over the Warwick inheritance never visibly left its mark on charters#so the Woodville/Neville divide from the 1460s must have been very sharp and divisive indeed#And yes it's safe to say that Elizabeth Woodville was probably involved: whether in her own right or via support of her family - or both -#it's illogical to argue that she was uninvolved (even the supportive Croyland Chronicle writes that Edward was “too greatly influenced”#by her; she and her family worked together across the 1470s; she was the de-facto head in 1483; etc)#Enhanced by the fact that Elizabeth was the first Englishwoman to be crowned queen - meaning that the involvement of her#homeborn family marked the beginning of “a new and largely unprecedented factor in the English power structure” (Laynesmith)#This should be kept in mind when it comes to analyzing contemporary views of them and of Elizabeth's own anomalous position#HOWEVER understanding the complexity of the situation at hand doesn't mean accepting the traditionally vilified depiction of the Woodvilles#Warwick and the Nevilles remained empowered and (at least outwardly) respected by the regime#Whether he was driven by disagreements over foreign policy or jealousy or ambition - the decision to rebel was very much his own#Claiming that the Woodvilles were primarily responsible is ridiculous (and most of the nobility continued to support Edward regardless)#There's also the fact that Warwick took what was probably a basic factional divide and turned it into a misogynistic and classist narrative#of a transgressive “bad” woman who became queen through witchcraft and aggrandized a family of social-climbing “lessers” who replaced#the inherently more deserving old nobility and corrupted the realm - later revived and intensified by Richard III a decade later#ie: We can recognize their genuine division AND question the (false/unfair) problematic narrative around the Woodvilles. Nuance is the key.

RIP Kenneth Cope (14.4.1931 - 11.9.2024)
"Michael Pratt and I just gelled. We had never met previously but we got on so well. Michael wrote, and we had such a great relationship that we would just change lines, and we were both on the same wavelength. That was such a lucky, lucky thing."

fic recs should also have lesser known underrated fics!!! not just fandom classics and fics that are already well loved and popular !!! that's the whole point of recommending i feel 😅
I am. not sure if you're saying that all the fics I recommended are fandom classics (they weren't!), or if this is pointing out what I tried to do, which is highlight more underrated fics.
Yes there were some absolute monsters that everyone knows and loves, like Error in the Code, but I feel I put a pretty good blend of well-known and unknown fics as well. I haven't been in this fandom all that long so a lot of my bookmarks came from popular fic reccs, and has grown since then.
There's actually a lot of them I didn't recommended bc they already had tens of thousands of hits, and I do believe fic reccs should have lesser known works, too! It can be discouraging to see the same group of people always recommended, especially when it feels like no one really reads "unknown" fic writers. Luckily KP doesn't seem to suffer from this problem, it's a small enough fandom that it feels like a lot of us are just. Already friends/familiar with each other. But that was a huge problem back in the Star Wars/TfA fandom back in the day. If you weren't a BNF, good luck ending up on a recc list.
At some point I might put together a list of my favorite fandom classics, so to speak, bc I think it's equally shitty to leave someone off of a list just because they're already popular. We're all still just people that crave validation, and there's no such thing as too much praise. I'm just trying to spread the love to everyone I can, popular or not, bc I think everyone deserve to get their fic recc'd at least once. And there's a lot of really amazing fics that don't get the attention I think they deserve!
No one has sent me any recc prompts but I'm building up my own list of ideas, and while my focus is definitely more on less popular works, it's always going to be based on how much I loved the fic itself. Popular fics are popular for a reason! Which is why I think the best thing to do is just try and strike a nice balance. That way everyone gets to be appreciated!

Olympics prompt
So I may end up regretting this, taking a long time, or maybe not even following through (fair warning XD), but I like learning about different Olympic sports, so, in an effort to do so, I thought of a prompt idea:
give me a character (or two) [for a fandom I know] + an Olympic sport, and I'll try to draw or write something for it! 😄⚽️🏊🏃🥇

Famous Authors, Lesser Known Works
Round 1
Emily of New Moon :
Lucy Maud Montgomery is better known for Anne of Green Gables
Anne is her most famous character (idk about outside of Canada but if you're talking about famous Canadian protagonists she's there) but I have loved Emily since I first read her series. it's a trilogy that takes a slightly more grounded and even at times cynical look at growing up even as it keeps the whimsy and creative joy from the Anne series. I have never related to a fictional character the way I relate to Emily and I will never stop telling people that she is my favourite

Kameron took Nadia to an underground lounge that is known to have live [good] music nightly. Little did they know how many cool points he'd score when the artist of the night was one who Nadia loves!
Thank you @shunohoney626 for blessing me with this beautiful sim! The Piersons thank you too. 😏

It’s always so funny to me when someone can’t tell the difference between an actor who’s over the top and an actor who is doing an intentionally over the top performance. The former can be super aggravating, I get it—but the latter can be so goddamn effective. Especially when you know the actor already, know they’re fully capable of giving normal human facial expressions and chill line deliveries. And they’re out here doing The Absolute Most all of a sudden? It’s for a reason, dude. It’s almost always for a reason. And once you can see past the camp on the surface, it’s so much fun digging in to what emotions the character is actually hiding.
#this is mainly about servant (and to a lesser degree YJ)#like Ambrose in servant is (pardon me) serving SUCH a chaotic performance#but having known her for decades I know full well that’s on purpose#Dorothy is over the top because she HAS to be. because she’s built walls so high around her own grief that the denial comes out in Crazy#and she fully thinks she’s the only one paying attention. the only sane one in the room.#you get glimpses of her being ‘normal in flashbacks#still a little Much. still a product of wealth and expectation. detached from reality to a degree.#but the character she becomes after the tragedy is. A Character.#it’s not the woman she was before. she bricked that woman up. she’s taken her performance from television and made a baby blanket out of it#it’s so. so intentional.#and you sort of get a similar thing going with Hewson in early eps of YJ#totally different starting block. Van doesn’t start out traumatized. but she does start out Big#she’s loud she’s silly she’s being intentionally wacky to get laughs out of people#and some of it comes off a little cringe. because it’s a kid playing a role#this is how you like me. I’m gay. I’m butch. I’m hiding.#if I’m a jester you’ll see what I want you to and nothing more. that’s the plan. it’s working. don’t look at the goalie.#not as a person.#but as the show goes on (or as she’s spending time with taissa) she slows down some. quiets. she’s snarkier. holding tension differently.#Hewson starts the performance at an 11 so they can really delve into who Van becomes when the mask is off#when there’s no point in playing the class clown#when it’s like. ah yeah. here’s the kid who grew up too fast.#here’s the kid who’s scared to death. and angry. and willing to fight to live.#it’s not an overacting thing. it’s VAN overacting to keep her secrets#watch the face so you miss what the hands are doing#actors man. actors are fucking cool. storytelling is fucking cool.#deconstructing the illusion is my favorite thing#(anyway still watching servant and it’s still really. Something Else.)

"The door of the coliseum was a bit open and the ticket-seller had gone. We got behind the glasses of the covered basketball field. The man holding the microphone was taking a nap and the cyclist was cycling all alone, as if he is doing it for god’s eyes."
