Not only did Disney not bother with Closed Captioning or Subtitles for their streamed series on DVD (Andor, Kenobit), but Electric ViaVision didn't either with their dvd of Leverage: Redemption, S1.

I guess this is their new way of cutting corners to get more profit.

Just fyi, the LACKADAISY Pilot does have closed captions, including Spanish and French subtitles. We will add more languages as we’re able to!

Hello Good Omens tumblr

So um I put good omens into chronological order on youtube and it took me a really long time (link to playlist here)

And I’m in the process of subtitling it, with the help of @hysterical-mess, @arsamatoria, @lickthecowhappy and @ineffqble, and I would really like some more people to help with it. Currently there are 213 videos on the playlist, 16 of which have been subtitled (about 8 of the videos on the playlist weren’t published by me so i cant subtitle them, they were published by prime).

Admittedly, I haven’t been spending every second of every day subtitling because y’know, I have a life to live and school to sit through but there’s no way the process of videos getting subtitled could go slower with more people subtitling!

There is no amount or videos you have to subtitle and if you try it and realise you hate it, you never have to do it again. I would just really appreciate some help making these videos more accessible.

Obviously there is no pressure if you don’t want to, I feel it is quite a niche thing to want to do voluntarily.

You don’t need any experience, hell you don’t need to have gcses, you just need to be able to spell and know basic grammar :D

Why the fuck did they get rid of it. One of the reasons was apparently that it wasn't used much. What the fuck. That's the shittiest reason I've ever heard in my goddamn life

The automated captions have gotten okay, but they have issues with the same shit I have issues with

I have severe hearing loss. It's difficult to hear anything with my hearing aids off. Why the FUCK would you get rid of my accessibility because it wasn't used much. That's not accessibility works, morons

That being said, huge shoutout to creators who DO add captions to their videos. I love y'all.

hate to be that guy but the saiki k dub on netflix is actually so annoying to watch 😭 not only because the dub doesnt match the subtitles but also because the jokes in the subtitles are often so much better ??? the anime already butchered or removed a lot of manga jokes, but the dub takes out even more or just makes them less funny 😭

I hate Hate HATE when subtitles are part of a movie but don't show up on the DVD version by default. Like, there's a scene where the characters use sign language or speak something other than English; in the theatrical version their lines are subtitled, but in the DVD it's completely blank unless you also turn on the captions for the rest of the dialogue. It's annoying, because they had to actually REMOVE a vfx layer to do it and the rest of the captions are always abridged so they don't say exactly what's being said on screen. All it does it distract and take me out of the movie.

I update interested parties each month about what's been added, and I'll start posting them here if there's sufficient interest, plus any additional musings. So here's the recap from March:

The community has provided so many submissions I'm nearly overwhelmed! I have a lot to review. Every caption will be published, it's just a matter of time. Those not present have been added to the queue.

First, overlap from February is SCORN by me, Erasmus Magnus. It highlights an interesting conundrum of subtitling: how to intuitively portray something said for a deaf/HOH audience, in this case a filtered voice. Feedback I received including that of @maplecaster led to the final result, and I think it works tremendously well.

Second, we have The Short Sniper by community regular, kitpigeon. Short and sweet, high-quality subs for one of Jerma's low-profile videos. Great job.

Next, we have Receding Randy transcribed by @maplecaster. This was some fine stuff. I'm embarrassed how long it took me to sync it, but that's only because I'm something of a perfectionist. I try to limit the time sink, but I want the best for the subtitles, and it only makes sense to polish the time to be as good as the text content.

After that, we have an absolute classic in the form of Grab that Grotto 5—no relation to Grotto Beasts—by @graysaregay. Well done on this. I did some executive editing for some tricky stuff like the text-to-speech voice. I'm really glad this ol' classic nearing a million has captions now.

And finally, italoplumber has provided a German translation of The Max Cow Capacity Compulsion. Never would've guessed he was popular in DACH countries, but I suppose it makes sense. It's in his name. Willkommen in Jermany.
