Crash Bandicoot 5: The Cancelled Spyro Crossover

DidYouKnowGaming and Liam Robertson did a video talking about a cancelled Crash Bandicoot 5 game that would've taken place after Crash 4: It's About Time.

For Toys For Bob's concept of Crash Bandicoot 5, Uka Uka would be the main villain, enter an interdimensional portal underneath the Academy of Evil and use it to reach Spyro's universe. He would corrupt the dragon elders in a ritual and use them to cause chaos across the Dragon Realms and it would affect Crash's dimension as well.

Crash and Coco follow after Uka Uka into Spyro's dimension to stop him. They would eventually meet Spyro the Dragon and they join forces to restore the Dragon Elders and defeat Uka Uka. The dragon elders we save would grant Spyro and Crash abilities from their feathers, similar to how the sentient masks from the Crash Bandicoot games would grant Crash powers.

Spyro and Crash would've been the two main playable characters, with Coco and Nina Cortex being considered as well. There were ideas of old Spyro worlds being reimagined with Crash Bandicoot style gameplay, like Crash needing Spyro's help in platforming and Crash riding on Spyro's back or using him as a weapon. There were ideas of playing Spyro or Crash separately, or together on the same screen.

One of the ideas was to shed light on Uka Uka's backstory and the source of his rivalry with Aku Aku.

I know, I am really on a "mocking Tyler Cowen" kick, I will move on from this soon. I just think the ways he is failing these days is very symptomatic of the zeitgeist faux-intellectualism and the ways thinkers are struggling to slot into an openly anti-intellectual movement.

He starts with "USAID is probably good", but in a very compliment-sandwich way. You taught me what a Straussian read is my dear Cowen, so when your "it is good" section is two lines of link dumps, and the rest of the piece is criticism, I am getting the message. So let us set that part aside and dig into those criticisms:

To be clear, I consider this kind of thing to be scandalous.  And I strongly suspect that some of the other outrage anecdotes are true, though they are hard to confirm, or not

The link is to the think tank The Urban Institute putting out a donation call because 1/3rd of its budget is from the Federal government. Which is scandalous...because...uh, why? It is the Urban Institute. They analyze government policy for hire. Their biggest customer is the government. What the fuck? Their latest research - just chosen randomly, top of the list - is an impact evaluation of a program to help at-risk youths graduate high school. Is that bad now?? Does Tyler Cowen no longer think impact evaluations of policy are good??

Imagine describing consulting firms this way: "Oil Well Advisors has hit significant headwinds now that Exxon Mobile is suspending all outside contractors", is that a scandal? Or just absolutely normal behavior for industries with large institutional clients? What is the alternative here? Does he want - in a post subtly praising the Trump Admin - the government to in-house all impact evaluations? I don't disagree that they should do more but, uh, read the room buddy?

I know I am harping on this point but I really wanna emphasize how much of a bad writing call this is - taking an actually insane position (orgs specializing in government contracts shouldn't exist lmao) and because it is so indefensible you instead just handwave it as obvious so the audience maybe doesn't notice. Very cringe.

Okay, moving on:

It does seem Nina Jankowicz and her work received funding, and that I find hard to justify.  It seems to be evidence for something broken in the process. 

The money went to her work with the Center for Information Resilience, which does investigative reporting on war crimes like in the Ukraine War. Maybe her project sucked, I don't even know, but come on. This is incredibly normal behavior for USAID.

 Or how about funds to the BBC?

You mean the BBC Media Action charity, which trains journalists and helps build out mobile & communication networks in developing countries? Should the US build 100% of its own orgs and never fund effective, international partners from US allies? Is that a coherent foreign policy goal I can just wave my hands about and never explain because it is so obvious?

He then goes into the "reforming USAID" angle:

The Samo piece is excellent.  For one thing he notes: “The agency primarily uses a funding model which pays by hours worked, thus incentivizing long-duration projects.”  And the very smart Samantha Power, appointed by Biden to run AID, “…is in favor of disrupting the contractor ecosystem.”  Samo also discusses all the restrictions that require American contractors to be involved. Here is a study on how to reform AID, I have not yet read it.

Which is totally fine, I agree if I ran USAID I could totally like boost efficiency by 50%. I bet a lot of spending is inefficient. But why are you pretending that the current admin is, in any way, aiming for technocratic reform?

Why bother bringing this thread up? That isn't what they are doing! It isn't relevant.

I love this classic trick:

According to the very smart, non-lunatic Charlie Robertson: "My data suggests US AID flows in 2024 were equivalent to: 93% of Somalia’s government revenues, 61% in Sudan, just over 50% in South Sudan and Yemen" While I do not take cutting off those flows lightly, that seems unsustainable and also wrong to me as a matter of USG policy.  Those do not seem like viable enterprises to me.

You can think whatever you want is wrong, your call. But unsustainable? All of USAID is half a percent of the federal government. Payments to Somalia are a rounding error. This is the definition of sustainable! You could run this forever and never even notice.

But okay, maybe you mean like it is creating a culture of dependency or somesuch, not the same thing but I will humor you. Let's look at the latest USAID impact assessment of their work in Somalia:

Oh whoops, looks like our ability to even evaluate programs has been stripped away by the current admin's mass purging of databases like impact assessment reports! Fortunately I have the Wayback Machine, so I can get around this:

"Culture of dependency" this money went to food and clean water for starving people. You can say whatever you want about priorities and all that shit. That it is "unsustainable". But if someone doesn't do this then some of these people die. I notice "let them die" does not appear in your bloodless discussion of "aid dependency". Maybe we should cut aid because they will be forced to get their state together and be better off in the long run. I understand that logic, I really do, you can make that case.

But fucking say it. Say "let them die" to my face. Man the fuck up.

Alright, last one since this is going on too long:

There are various reports of AID spending billions to help overthrow Assad. I cannot easily assess this matter, either whether the outcomes was good or whether AID mattered, but perhaps (assuming it was effective) such actions should be taken by a different agency or institution?

I love this one because it is a peak "attack of opportunity" moment. At the beginning of this very post he says this:

The piece, to clarify, explains that USAID is not an aid agency, but fundamentally an extension of US foreign policy and conducts itself to achieve foreign policy goals. That this is its explicit, stated purpose. And Tyler Cowen says it is a great piece.

And then proceeds to say that pursuing those goals in Syria should maybe be at a different agency because that isn't "aid".

Bro you don't give a rat's ass about that! You just wanted to score points, you don't care about this at all. It was just on the list, you didn't even think about it, you just said something that sounded plausible. It is pathetic, you don't have to comment on every headline if you don't have a hot take. Just post a meme instead like a normal person.

But he does have to comment, because this post exists to ingratiate himself to the vibe shift. It as transparent as it is embarrassing - it is so limp-wristed, saying things like "the 'Elonsphere' on Twitter is very much exaggerating the horror anecdotes" when their most viral claims are just naked fabrications. The Band's Moondog Matinee

Ah, The Covers Record: it's every singer-songwriter's supposed flag of surrender.

As with most things in the Dollar Bin, Dylan charted the course. Despite decades of explanation, reconsideration and defense, Dylan's first covers record, Self Portrait, remains, by and large, a smoldering load of crap, with Bob's version of The Boxer serving as the living embodiment of how not to make art.

(Well, I wrote that assessment above and then proceeded to kinda enjoy Bob's trainwreck of a performance.... But back to my point!)

Self Portrait's disaster hasn't stopped just about everyone from making a cover record of their own. Valerie June and Lucy Dacus both used Covid as an excuse to issue theirs; Tori Amos, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Steve Earle and Bruce Springsteen made theirs the moment they ran out of good ideas.

Willie Nelson must have over 75 cover records to his name at this point. And Lucinda Williams seems determined to follow his lead; her new Beatles record is her sixth or seventh covers collection from the last few years; some of that output sounds like karaoke; some sounds pretty damn good:

And Dylan himself has made 6 cover records already this century (Triplicate is exactly what it claims to be: three albums worth of dull songs you never needed to hear him sing); indeed, it's high time I tormented my family by dialing up his fantastically wacky Christmas in the Heart.

Joni Mitchell, Richard Thompson and Paul Simon are Dollar Bin artists who can proudly claim they've never made a cover record; all of them, however, would be lying to say so: they all covered themselves through late-career records dedicated to rerecordings of their own damn songs.

Suffice it to say that if we want to hear great covers of classic tunes we do not turn to singer-songwriters; rather we turn to the world's most beautiful singers and musicians: Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, John Cale, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and, of course, Chan Marshal.

And so it was without much enthusiasm that I plucked The Band's Moondog Matinee out of a Dollar Bin 22 years ago. Rick, Levon, Garth, Richard and Robbie were all great songwriters at one point but beauty was never really their thing. I mean, come on, let's compare them to Chan Marshall:

I was in a fun phase of my life when I discovered Moondog Matinee: my first career as a social worker was winding down, I had a short commute, my wife was selflessly doing the real work at home with our one year old and, after a decade of largely buying CD's, I had just sworn them off forever and set my record player back up.

And so, once or twice a month, I'd spend an hour or so tunneling through my local dollar bin, hunting up treasures and making discoveries: who knew Cat Stevens even had a record called Numbers? Turns out Band on the Run is a killer album... LA Express was not worthy of a record deal... And Linda Ronstadt is the Dollar Bin's Great Living Artist.

I remember asking my famous brother about Moondog Matinee before dropping the needle on it for the first time. He was already getting big on the internet: just out of college, he wrote at a torrid pace for a long dead music site called Junk Media; the kid had already interviewed Robyn Hitchcock and recorded an EP of his own music. Why are we reading Pitchfork and listening to The Decemberists today instead? I've got no idea.

Anyway, Moondog Matinee, my famous brother informed me, marked The Band's demise: by 1973 writers block had set in for Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson was already old and done, and the rest of the band were just too stoned to rock. I nodded at him sagely; I'd always kinda hated Cahoots so how could the group's follow up cover record be any good?

Well folks, that was a hell of a long time ago, an era in which my famous brother was actually capable of musical malfeasance. Moondog Matinee does not mark The Band's demise. Indeed, I hereby proclaim it to be The Dollar Bin's Greatest Covers Record.

Just listen to the ringing, jubilant and razor sharp groove set on the record's opening track.

I remember standing in our first little rented home the first time I dropped the needle on this thing. Our one year old was crawling about at my feet, tasting all her toys. My wife definitely was not around. The track's piano began to pound; the whole thing wound up tighter and tighter and then unfurled like a hilarious tornado: cows, tanker trucks and automobiles cycled within it. And then Levon Helm started his patented vocal version of hillbilly bellydancing.

I stood there listening, instantly transfixed. Then I turned the song way up, far too loud for one year old ears. But my sweet little girl rocked about a bit anyway, climbing my leg to shake her diapered hips. Then she grinned at me, clapped her chubby hands and crapped her pants. It was awesome.

If you're going to make a covers record there is no excuse for picking a bad song or striking a dull note. And all of Matinee's Side 1 is a master class in care, pace and arrangement. Holy Cow warbles and shimmies; Mystery Train brings the white funk; and the theme from Third Man is suitably bizarre: it has no business whatsoever appearing on this record and so we love it.

And in the midst of it all, Share Your Love, with its clean guitar lead and its surging sway, makes a case for poor, lost, Richard Manuel as the greatest white male singer of his generation.

Side 2 offers more of the same, with Manuel and Helm trading lead vocals back and forth, fantastic piano and ramshackle drums throughout. Indeed the only real misstep may be The Band's attempt at a song that was already perfect to begin with:

this blog will run on a low-medium activity status. some weeks i work full time hours and some days i'm more present than others. i can get overwhelmed easily so your patience is appreciated. please do not take it personal if it takes me longer to get back to ims, i promise i'm not ignoring you. sometimes i just don't have the brain power to reply right then but that doesn't mean i'm not interested or i don't care.

that being said, dynamics that are well thought out will be the threads i will get to first, due to the extensive work gone into them. this is all based on muse and where it takes me. it doesn't mean i don't value our threads by any means, as all ships are valuable to me. as well if there is a thread i am taking too long to get to, don't be scared to shoot me a message.

delving into the character, i have not read the books and probably don't intend to in the future. elena is a college student studying medicine, in other verses depending she's a writer. i will happily write tvd things but i also love to explore elena in various other universes outside of that show, though supernatural and dark plots are always more than welcome too. i ship stefan/elena and will write them any day. however writing damon/elena will need some plotting in advance.
