Emily/Nikolas

MY BABIES! Okay, so I’m only really familiar with Natalia’s Emily and therefore her relationship with Nikolas. They are the definition of “Deserved better!”.

The thing is, I remember not finding them having as explosivie chemistry as maybe some of the other pairings going on at the time - but the chemistry was still there. It is without a doubt both Nikolas and Emily’s best relationship.

I always loved Nikolas whereas with Emily I had a love/hate relationship with, because Emily was just perfect, she had no flaws - she’s like that friend you have that is so good at everything, has no flaws and it’s so annoying. You love them but you’re like “Stop being so selfless and perfect! Fuck up!” 

This is definitely one of the top couples that have been screw around the most by writers. Liason fans think Jason and Liz have been ruined by the writers. LnL2 as well. JaSam stans think JaSam has been ruined since Steve came back, same for Dream stans. But they have nothing on Nem. I felt like Nikolas and Emily were never properly given the chance to fully hit their stride. Like if you think of all the other supercouple pairings like Lucky and Liz, Jason and Sam, Drew and Sam (maybe Liz and Jason - I can’t judge because I don’t ship them nor am invested in them) - you can easily argue that at least they had a good period of being together before the writers messed them up.

However, with Nikolas and Emily, you never really got that, apart from perhaps their ‘courtship’ and even then that was filled with angst because of Zander etc. Then we had that Mary/Connor stuff and then of course Connor raped Emily which quickly ended their marriage. Then Courtney happened. Sonny happened. The Jerry Jacks/Robin/Nikolas stuff. Then by the time they get their shit sorted, get their chance - EMILY GETS MURDERED!

Here is the thing, I get characters die. Emily didn’t deserve it and it was done for shock value. But here is the thing. She had more potential. Nem hadn’t hit their potential! If they hit their potential and a proper iconic modern supercouple, then I wouldn’t be mad if one died because at least they had some good times, a lifetime in those years. Like I love JaSam, and if they properly killed him off in 2012, yeah I’d be pissed because they just got back together and we hadn’t had the chance to see them as a family, but at the same time I would get over and appreciate their relationship because they had a lifetime in their 8 years. You kind of expect a tragic ending with the mob stuff and it brings up the idea of second love for Sam in the future, But they never did with Nem! Writers screwed them up, I felt Emily was never really given a storyline out of Nikolas, she had her own stuff and the Sonny stuff, but was never given an opportunity to explore on her own.

The thing with Nem was that they their chemistry wasn’t necessarily explosive, that was not how their relationship was written, so they were given all this unnecessary drama - I get you need drama so a couple don’t become boring (*cough*Dante/Lulu*cough*) but the drama eventually tainted the couple and it lost it’s sweet innocent appeal. I mean if they were able to keep that, and she died - it was have all the makings of a sad tragic story about young sweethearts who were best friend, that completely pure thing taken away from us. 

Also, it doesn’t help that the writers never seemed to fully move on from Emily for Nikolas. I always wanted that relationship that could equal Nem but was completely different. I wish they fully committed to The Dark Cassadine after Emily died, you know because Nikolas has that Cassadine gene so Emily kind of kept it at bay. That’s how I felt it should have been and should be viewed - something so innocent and sweet that it’s odd for a Cassadine.

And I think what bugs me most is that this is only the big ship for Nikolas, so you’d expect some epic history in the relationship, something to go that is why they were so popular and great. But honestly, the material they were given, how it was treated by the writers…It isn’t all that because they never were properly given a chance, they were never able to hit their potential.

Put a pairing in my ask and I’ll tell you if I ship it or not

I feel like in an AU where Nikolas and Emily were still alive and the twins were raised together, the couples that I would want together would be Nikolas/Emily, Jason/Sam, and Drew/Elizabeth.  I also think that AJ and Britt could have been a good couple.

What are your favorite GH couples, past and present?

Okay, as you can tell from my posts, I’m a big fan of JaSam. Most of them are sorta recent, just based on when I’ve watched the show and I tried to limit it to 10.

1) Jason Morgan and Sam McCall

And I’m talking about Steve Burton and Kelly Monaco Stelly, JaSam goodness, and I’ll be honest, I did enjoy what Billy Miller and Kelly Monaco did with “JaSam” but after the Jake Doe reveal and them getting married they just became boring and the actors could not elevate the dynamic. Plus with the original JaSam, I’m a sucker for the dynamic where one person brings out another side to the other person. In the case of Jason and Sam, the side with Sam, you don’t really see with any of his other love interests. Although, with how Sam is being written currently and how the writers appear to be going ahead with Drew and Sam, I don’t see how JaSam can reunite nor if it will ever be the same, I fear they’re ruining years of what different writers have put in the the pairing. But those scenes in the Hospital….Stelly have still got it.

2) Robin Scorpio and Patrick Drake

The love-hate dynamic, the arrogant Doctor, Patrick Drake was General Hospital’s McDreamy and I loved him and Robin together, to be honest any love interest of Robin’s that can handle her HIV gets a gold star from me. The only thing that bugged me were the storylines in which Robin had to be separate from her family constantly. It was fine the one time, it created some good angst, but other times, I felt it was cheapening Scrubs, I get that they were in a bind at times because Kimberly left full-time.

3) Emily Quartermaine and Nikolas Cassadine

They were just cute and kinda pure, I always found Emily’s character, especially Natalia’s version to be one of those characters that are so pure and so perfect that you’re secretly annoyed with them because they are too perfect. I felt this pairing was a little ruined when she got raped by Nikolas’ doppelganger and why I understand how they fell apart, I just wished that they were given more time.Especially since they decided to kill Emily off during the Text Message Killer storyline - I mean, ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? IT WAS THEIR TIME! - But I digress, I just think that they were very sweet but the writers were never fully invested in the pairing as perhaps the fans were. I also think it’s sad that Nikolas never fully got a love interest that he could move on with, I felt like after a while the character was floating around until the Lucky-Liz-Nikolas stuff. We saw the Dark Nikolas stuff near the end of Tyler Christopher’s tenure, I think that could have worked more if it happened soon after Emily died. He loses the love of his life, and in result loses himself and turns bad.

4) Lucky Spencer and Elizabeth Webber

Now here I’m talking vintage Lucky and Liz - I’m talking Becky and Jonathan’s Lucky and Liz. That pairing was so sweet and it just sort of subvert traditional daytime soap couples with them waiting to have sex, it just wasn’t about physicality but more about the bond and emotional stuff. Unfortunately this pairing has been plague by the writers. I feel like since this pairing took off and reached Supercouple status that the writers felt pressure to give it supercouple drama and make them the next Luke and Laura, and in result this ended up ruining the pairing. Also the inconsistency in Lucky didn’t help, when Greg took up the role I loved the chemistry between the actors, but the writers wrote his Lucky badly and I always felt that there was a massive preference over Becky. I love old school LnL2 but I think if Lucky were to return, they just wouldn’t work anymore, I think Lucky deserves better and I think the boys need stability which I don’t think LnL2 can provided romantically, but I would love to see them co-parent together and continue that bond as close friends. I hate how due to Jonathan Jackson leaving, they’ve made him seem like an absentee father to Cameron, Jake and Aiden. 

5) Sam McCall and Patrick Drake

Okay, now SamTrick aren’t my OTP, but boy did I love them. I always sort of view them as each other’s second chance at love. They both lost and couldn’t be with their respective soulmates and they were each other’s second chance at happiness. I also loved their friendship beforehand so to see a relationship come out of it was great. It was also a pairing where I felt they both knew that they weren’t the love of each other’s lives, there was no false pretence with them. My only disappointment was how quick Sam ditched him for “Jason”, that scene with Emma was heartbreaking - I don’t know if it was to prop up JaSam since they really dragged out the Jake Doe stuff or if it was because Jason Thompson was leaving so they had to write him out. I just think it’s a shame, because it would have been nice to see Sam and Patrick continue their friendship, Post-SamTrick especially since he doesn’t see Jason with rose-tinted goggles and seemed to be one of the few friends of Sam that were about Sam and not Jason.

6) Maxie Jones and Damian Spinelli 

These were never an OTP, but they were entertaining to watch. I love a dynamic in which the nerdy person gets the popular girl and Spinelli did help Maxie develop and grow as a character, but I think what I did love a lot about was what they added to JaSam, that was something I never expected. I loved seeing Jason flustered over Spixie. It was a much healthy foursome than CarSon-JaSam, since Spinelli is geniuely concerned about Jason and his happiness while Maxie is also concerned about JaSam and Sam’s happiness. Plus they were able to show that they could sustain themselves outside of JaSam with the surrogacy plot.

7) Lulu Spencer and Dante Falconeri

 I think I’m talking early Dominic and Julie Lante, and this is no disrespect to Emme, just since she’s taken over I felt the pairing has become stale along with the characters, I think that could be down to writing and maybe some time apart with give the characters some life. But I loved Lante early on, from Dante being undercover to their fertility issues. In recent years, their domesticity is good and they deserve it but this is a soap, we need drama and I think Lulu needs to be paired off with someone else for a while since I don’t feel like Emme has made a stamp as Lulu yet. Emme and Dominic are cute, just not interesting…

8) Sam McCall and Lucky Spencer

Again, not an OTP, but I liked what LuSam did to Sam’s character, especially since her character heavily revolves around Jason, so this pairing allowed Sam to stand on her own two feet, plus Lucky seemed less insecure with Sam than he did with Liz here. Ultimately they wouldn’t have worked since Sam is a ride-or-die risktaker and while Lucky likes being a cop and doing his duty which can put him in danger, he doesn’t like putting others in danger, while Sam doesn’t like being told what to do and she can’t do something. But I loved what each other did for the other person‘s character and the mutual break-up was nice and a little sad, but it was nice to see a little bit of their friendship continue based on that, there was a little nod to it. Although it would have been nice to see their friendship continue as well, I feel like Lucky needs someone on his side at times.

9) Nathan West and Maxie Jones

I won’t have much to say, but I love these two. They have a very different dynamic to Spixie but are still good. I feel like Spixie were high school sweethearts and first loves, but Naxie are the real deal, and I did especially enjoy early Naxie. The early stages of a ship are always great, but when they got together it was great. I also loved seeing bits where Nathan was almost possessive - but in a light hearted way, he’s waited so long. I do feel like the ship has been plague, due to Kirsten Storms health issues as well as the Ask Man Landers storyline.

10) Julian Jerome and Alexis Davis

This is a weird one, because I love it, thought they were hot and steamy. Then the stuff happened with him trying to kill her and I was so mad and was done with it, then these Julexis scenes recently just made me love them again. I kind of like that they were once together decades ago and reunited. And even though it’s written messily. But I can’t judge, I love Ejami from Days of our Lives and I’ve been missing a proper, trashy soap ship since them, that pairing that in real life wouldn’t be together nor rooting for but you can‘t stop watching them in Soaps. People keep talking about the unhealthy pairings in Daytime soaps, saying that they shouldn’t be together because of this and that, but these soaps also have storylines in which people are cloned to look like someone else, or cryogenically frozen to come back to life. They have these ridiculous plots which wouldn’t happen in real life, but they have an issue with Julian trying to kill Alexis and getting back together and the message it sends. - I don’t think that matters as long as you know what‘s right and wrong, especially since daytime soaps play with what‘s realistic and what‘s OTT very loosely.
