1. Bakunawa

All Bakunawans in MS:TET have a set curse on them. They are used as fuel to keep the moon together. The glue that keeps Bakunawa inside the moon feeds on their magic and their life force until they eventually wither like a dried flower.

It’s an inevitable thing, and it’s mainly why they live so short (about 50s to 60s).

Direct descendants have it even worse. It’s why Laho had Nawa and Hiraya so early before dying in his mid-20s. Bakunawa is really, really angry at Haliya (wants her entire existence and bloodline erased) and is out for her descendants' blood, even if it came from their own son.

‘Freezing’ or 'locking away' the curse has consequences, mostly manifesting with symptoms similar to dementia, Alzheimers, amnesia, etc. Not to mention that the Illustres’ will have you on a tight leash just so you can have the procedure since it’s so costly and niche (only Illustre clan members, or those connected to them know how to do it).

No one knows of the curse’s existence aside from the Illustre. It’s mostly thought of as cancer, or some other progressive illness.

Nawa’s uncle has already frozen her once a little after fleeing to China because the stress and trauma kicked it early, but it led to her forgetting everything back in the Elyas House with Hiraya before she eventually regained them with MK’s help (her reaction to this is in the next chapter). It’s clearly returning, though.

Despite being clearly corrupt, Illustre has a reason to do this. They’re at least indebted to manage Bakunawa due to the trouble it wrought hundreds of years ago, and I’m pretty sure Chang’e wouldn’t like to wake up with her moon base exploding.

2. Haoran

No, he is not. He will never be dehorned, unless he asks for it. He’s well informed regarding their family history, which leads to him wanting to be the next person to do better after Nawa.

The main thing Nawa wants is to not repeat the past (though sometimes a little too much.)

Can you give me more information about this cannibalism?

I put a little bit of research on this beforehand, but there's a phenomena where snakes will actually cannibalize other snakes in the face of stress and hunger.

In Nawa's case, she was both: having been dehorned (especially so late into the age of 11) and isolated during her recovery. Hiraya may have had good intentions, but she shouldn't have snuck off to see her alone.

Since she wasn't dehorned at a young age (infancy or so) because of her father Laho's cultural beliefs and morals, Nawa had features and behaviors that wouldn't have appeared had she been dehorned earlier.

Keeping horns isn't necessarily bad, just having it is kind of inconvenient (not to mention beauty standards), so most people with Bakunawan heritage just remove them from birth despite some getting stunted from it. Hiraya is an example of this, she's used to getting dehorning procedures since they've began ever since she was young. Nawa on the other hand, wasn't used to the procedures, so the only thoughts on her noggin was "why?"

Unfortunately, one of the features they retain if the dehorning procedure was done too late is that their jaw would be able to stretch widely in multiple directions.

And you're not you when you're feeling hungry. And stressed. Absolutely terrified, even.

All it took was one night for everything to go wrong.

Hiraya’s remains were recovered amidst the charred ruins, but questions surrounding Manawari’s disappearance continue to haunt investigators.

While official reports point to accidental causes, rumors persist. Some whisper of supernatural involvement, with aswangs alleged to have sparked the fire, while others lean toward shadowy conspiracies tied to the family’s prominence.

Despite the years, the tragedy continues to cast a shadow over the once-influential Elyas family, with answers to the night’s events remaining as elusive as ever.
