anyone have any favorite savory meal recipes with no alliums (onion/garlic/scallion/leek/chive/etc) or nuts (peanuts included, but sesame and coconut ok though) or bananas that are vegetarian and ideally aren't super lactose heavy?
these are the allergies (plus lactose intolerance) of the ttrpg group i've been doing potlucks with every week for a while and i'm good whenever i make desserts and sides and stuff but whenever i make main courses ive mostly ended up making either south indian food or italian foods that verge on too cheesy so i wanna see where else i could branch out with this
#cpost#with a lot of subtle garlic stuff its w/e i can probably replace it with asafoetida#but i hate making a lot of things that were originally made with onion and taking it out it doesnt taste as rich#so i want more of a breadth of flavor palettes that i'm not just making substitutions for#although when just cooking for the friend with the allium and banana allergy whose not vegetarian or anything else i did once make a#decent lamb stew approximating my normal one by doing some wild finicky combo of celery/radish/asafoetida/nigella seeds/apple/msg/etc#but just finding more recipes that avoid that problem would be so much easier

To me Roy gets a Lil chubby in retirement. He's still active, but less so due to his knee and just his new role in general. He also doesn't have to eat as strictly, so I see him being a little more indulgent with his food choices.
YEAHHHHH YEAHHHHH YEAHHHHH
#I stood up and cheered#Roy trying to keep onto that diet associated with training since football is all he knows#but with keeley working a lot and he’s in recovery and hungry like…..#gaining some weight for the first time in a long time that Isn’t muscle ……#I know keeley would go cavewoman brain abt it too lmao like no thoughts ever#and I think he’s a good cook like I think he watched cooking shows or something ?#since he suggested dinner of nigella lawson’s recipe#so him trying these recipes w all this free time and he gains weight ….

I saw a video about this and it made think of severus immediately but like imagine him going to a conference with his partner and he’s talking while his partner is somewhere else and he hears them laugh and pauses, cause who’s making them laugh this hard? 🤨
No. I must. It is too good to let it pass. I will write it as if the partner were you. No one asked for this. I just imagined and here it goes.
Severus is lecturing on the importance of gillywater on the various states. When he describes a certain preparation method that he had discovered, your companion whispers something to your ear. You laugh and Severus almost imperceptibly stops and resumes speaking shooting your companion a venomous look.
On the way home, he asks.
"What has that buffoon said to you that turned you into a graceless hippogriff during my lecture?"
You smile and swat at his arm. "I believe that is none of your concern, Sir." you emphasize his title playfully.
Severus shoots you a side glance and purses his lips, biting his cheek to not push the question.
You are smirking and forcing a giggle to not burst out of your mouth
"If you are not telling me, then please refrain from laughing at something I am clearly not allowed to know of." He sounded almost hurt but you knew it was playful as well. He was dying to know.
"Fine, I will tell you. But it will change the way you see him. " you warned
"Go on."
"He said he wanted to hear you reciting the 'Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook' just to hear you say 'Continue to whip, vigorously, until your meringue stiffens.'"
You can barely contain your laughter and Severus barks out his own.
"I can read it to you... " he suggested after controlling his laughter, smirking and raising an eyebrow
"I'd rather whip your meringue until it stiffens".
😜

Nigella's salted chocolate tart
I’m famously a fan of salt added to sweet things, so was very excited about making this. I can confirm that it doesn’t disappoint. My favourite thing about this is the texture of the filling; smooth and creamy and just set. Quite often chocolate ganache style tarts can set a little firm, but not so for this one. I’ve honestly never had a Nigella recipe go wrong; her recipes are so…

My brain does not work well with most social media, especially video like TikTok. But do you know what I would watch religiously?
Jamie Tartt's "Roy Kent Swears at Things" channel.
Pundit shows. Traffic. Match footage. Books. Bake-Off. Other people. Recipes that do not turn out like Nigella said they would. Grocery prices, because Roy grew up poor, and despite the fact that he has no problem dropping a wad of cash or a gold watch to catch a ride, it mortally offends him that his favorite snack no longer costs 50p.
Surreptitious shots are easy because of Jamie's complete inability to sit like a normal person — Roy never notices the camera's pointed at him. Plus, when Roy really gets going, Jamie can film him flat-out like a fan on the street, he's so distracted.
But the best ones are just Jamie, camera pointed at his own face, stifling laughter (you know, a la 03x02, Trent's locker room intro), while the dulcet tones of Roy hollering things like "WHAT THE FUCK D'YOU THINK YOU'RE FUCKING DOING, YOU FUCKFACE FUCKING CUNT" come from the background.

This calls for rigatoni but it would be equally good with penne - Big Pasta with Mushroom, Parsley, Garlic and Thyme. foodnetwork com/recipes/nigella-lawson/big-pasta-with-mushroom-parsley-garlic-and-thyme-recipe-2014149
Oh, this looks fantastic, thank you! I love everything in that recipe :D For those who are perplexed, this is from when I asked for pasta recipes because I had ALL THE PENNE. I still have MOST OF THE PENNE so I appreciate this and all the other suggestions/recipes! I haven't been doing much imaginative cooking lately, but hopefully February will be a little quieter than December-January were (famous last words).

It's new year's eve! Traditionally, this means ginger snaps. (it's not really a tradition, it's just the thing I do when we have people over and it's closing in on 1am and I want them out of my house. surprise! I wandered out of the living room to make cookies, stuff that in your face and gtfo. but slightly nicer than that.)
Since we're not hosting anything or going anywhere this year, and since December has been such an epic shitshow, I'm skipping the cookies and making Nigella Lawson's Chocolate Gingerbread Cake.
...you know, I kind of understand the recipe-blog urge to pontificate before the recipe. maybe I just like to hear myself talk. Anyway, this is a slightly modified version of Nigella's recipe. It's a gooey, spicy, chocolatey, decadent thing, and it's possibly my favorite cake recipe, ever.
1 1/2 sticks (12 tbs) butter
1 c. + 2 T dark brown sugar
2 T granulated sugar
3/4 c. golden syrup (sub half corn syrup and half honey- or all honey- if you don't have a tin of golden syrup lying around, dont sweat it)
3/4 c. molasses
1/4 tsp ground cloves (I'm still using allspice, fuck cloves, all my homies hate cloves, unless they're being poked into oranges)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
2 T warm water
2 eggs
1 c. milk
2 c. flour
1/3 c. cocoa
1/4 tsp salt (omit if using salted butter)
1 c. chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 325. Line a glass 10x13 pan with parchment paper. (You want glass because of the honey; if using golden syrup, use whatever pan your heart desires.)
In a large saucepan, melt the butter with the sugars, syrup, molasses, cloves, cinnamon and ginger. make your life easier by using a lightly oiled liquid measuring cup for the molasses and other syrups. or don't! enjoy being sticky.
Dissolve baking soda in water.
Take saucepan off heat, and whisk in eggs, milk and soda/water
Reserve ~1 tbs flour.
Sift remaining flour, cocoa, and salt into wet mixture and stir to combine
Toss the chocolate chips in the reserved flour, then fold in chocolate chips.
Bake about 45 min until risen and firm. The middle should still be a little damp under the set top, and will sink a little. . (I went an extra 10 minutes because I used a 9x13 pan, it went until the middle was set but not risen.) Cool in the pan.
Make glaze or frosting, if you want. Nigella has a ginger beer and chocolate glaze; I've also made this with a cardamom cream cheese icing, which is faaaabulous. (take a standard cream cheese icing- block of cream cheese, few tbs butter, powdered sugar until you like the consistency- and add 1 tsp vanilla and 1/2-1tsp ground cardamom.)
I like the way Nigella describes this- makes 12 fat slabs. This is technically a 1 bowl recipe, even if I magically always manage to dirty every bowl and utensil in the house; the flour sifting is entirely optional, but it will help reduce lumps in the batter.
The first time I made this was in 2010, when I ran out of molasses, had no corn syrup, and had to scrounge for as much honey as I could find in the cupboards. My early #disaster-kitchen days were full of me starting recipes without checking to see if I had all the ingredients. (There are several funny stories about that, actually, one of which led to me getting married. Remind me to make that honey cake recipe again.)
But, more importantly, the last time I made this was some time in 2011 or 2012, so I had no idea what recipe I'd used for it. But I did post about it on livejournal when I made it. Buuuut my LJ is friends locked, so I had to log back in. Which, of course, meant I had to reset my password. And that was one of the last posts I'd made! But the recipe I linked to went to a dead site. But! The Wayback Machine saved me! So here we are.
It smells so fucking good, you guys. The molasses, the spices, the chocolate- so. fucking. good.
