The Bukharian Jewish community, while little known by the world’s broader Jewish population, is certainly no stranger to the kitchen. With historical exposure to multifarious global influences, from Central Asia to Eastern Europe to everything picked up along the Silk Road, Bukharian cuisine reflects profound cultural fusion while maintaining its own unique flair. Here are eight essential Bukharian dishes that are worth a try:
Bakhsh
A staple in any Bukharian Jewish household, bakhsh is a rice dish easily recognizable for its distinctive green hue, which results from the addition of green herbs like cilantro and dill. Finely chopped meat or chicken, onions and other aromatics also feature prominently. Bakhsh is cooked using two primary methods — either by gradually layering the ingredients in a pot or submerging a bag with all the ingredients in boiling water. The latter preparation method, which allows the dish to be pre-cooked, was traditionally favored by Shabbat observers.
Osh Sovo
Another meal created to accommodate Shabbat, osh sovo is a slow-cooked fruity, meaty rice dish that is commonly served for Saturday lunch after being cooked overnight, beginning before the onset of Shabbat. The fruits incorporated into the rice are typically tangy and dry, often including prunes or dried apricots. Vegetables (such as tomatoes, carrots and potatoes) and spices (paprika or turmeric) are also thrown into the mix. The result is an incredibly silky, sweet-and-sour dish that’s a cross between a stew and a risotto.
Kov Roghan
This dish is simplicity at its finest — soft potato wedges are simmered with cubes of either chicken or meat in a broth to make for a heart- and soul-nourishing meal. Some soak up the remaining broth on the plate with lepyoshka, a round Uzbek bread adopted by Bukharians.
Osh Palov
As Uzbekistan’s national dish, osh palov (also commonly called plov) has been adopted into a beloved food enjoyed at all sorts of Bukharian gatherings. To prepare it, chopped lamb is browned at the bottom of a large pot, after which thinly sliced carrots and onions are added, all topped with sticky and often oily white rice. Raisins, chickpeas and whole heads of garlic also typically adorn a large platter of plov, which often serves as the final course at large Bukharian dinners.
Osh Piyozi
Adopted from Afghan culture along the Silk Road, osh piyozi consists of softened, bite-sized stuffed onions. Fillings typically consist of a mixture of ground meat and rice, and the onions are often served in a sauce featuring tomatoes, dried fruits and peas, giving tasters a melt-in-your-mouth, umami bite.
Samsa
A cousin of Indian samosas, this baked savory pastry consists of triangle-shaped laminated dough filled with anything from ground meat and onions to pumpkin. While Uzbek households use butter or ghee as a laminate, Bukharians typically use non-dairy fats or opt for a non-laminated dough in order to maintain kashrut. One can often find a spicy tomato sauce beside a serving of samsa, which is meant to be drizzled into an opening in the pastry shell.
Sirkoniz
This rice dish can be perceived as a variation on osh palov, setting itself apart in two main ways: its distinct garlicky flavor and the fact that it is almost always served cold, another ancient Bukharian strategy for eating enjoyably while observing Shabbat.
Manti
Adopted from Uzbek cuisine, manti are traditional steamed dumplings stuffed with ground beef and diced onions, often served with the same spicy tomato sauce used for samsa. Unlike some variations across the Caucasus, Bukharian manti are distinctly large, usually requiring a few bites to finish.

Hi Amber!
Does Alpha Steve know how to cook??? What is the best thing he can cook?? And what's his favourite thing made by little one??
And for house chores , who's doing what?? Like cleaning, vacuuming, dishes, dusting, changing bed sheets and stuff... I'm sucha wishful thinker, can't wait to see their toddler running around and scattering toys all over the floor of their cabin. And little one scolding Steve for not putting their pup in bed in time.❤💖❤💖❤💖❤💖 god, I wish I live to see that day.
Alpha Steve does know how to cook in a very simple but comforting way. In the winter time think of savory beef stews in bread bowls (He buys those) or something along the lines of meat and potatoes. His cheesy potato bake is a comfort meal all on its own.
He is also a very efficient outdoor cook, over the campfire. The best-seared steaks, roasted veggies, and toasted garlic bread are all made over the flames. Or wild game, he is known to hunt and prep a kill to make. His time before Alpha traveling with the Howling Commando group taught him how to feed a large group of hungry wolves.
He can't bake worth a damn though which is tragic cause he does have a bit of a sweet tooth.
This is one of his favorite things Little One will make, especially when the cold has come back to their woods, having the oven on quickly heats the house up. So while Steve is busy prepping to go out with the crew up the mountain, you are in the kitchen, only wearing his flannel button-up and the thickest socks you have ever seen, prepping cinnamon roll dough when the light is just barely filtering into the cabin from outside. Your cinnamon spread fills the whole cabin up with the warm spicy scent and Steve usually gets distracted from getting dressed to follow his nose out into the kitchen where he catches sight of Little One singing to yourself while making the frosting while the rolls are baking.
Imagine how playful Steve is first thing in the morning? He typically does everything he can to distract you so he can get a big dollop of that creamy topping (Usually where he licks it off you from somewhere, it just tastes better that way.)
Those cinnamon rolls are big as his oversized palms and so fluffy and good. He gobbles two down before leaving the house and Little One packs up many more for him to share with the crew during a coffee break.
He also loved her homemade pizzas. It's all in the perfect crust, you add the right amount of sauce and plenty of freshly shredded cheese. Yeah, you take the time to shred it all because it just tastes better that way. You add both of your favorite toppings and Steve can't get enough of them. You subtly know that is what he wants when the pizza stone makes an appearance on the kitchen counter.
Steve is planning on trying to make the pizzas with you next time you two are out in the woods for a few days, see if they are just as good baked in the hot coals of a campfire. We will see.
As far as house duties, they share. Steve was a bachelor for a while after he made Alanna leave and before Little One showed up in his life. He likes a clean and efficient space, everything has a place and if it is always there, then he knows where it is.
A few things are scattered comfterably around. His desk is filled with drawings, some journal entries that he half finished, or a few books he has been meaning to get around to reading. The couch has an afghan usually half draped over the back and maybe one of his heavy coats sitting on the arm of it to grab if he needs it quickly.
It's when Little One arrived his cabin got a bit chaotic. Like your little treasures you find are stuck in nooks and crannies, sometimes his perfectly arranged bookshelf is suddenly disorganized and you at times leave things out on the kitchen counter for easy grab. (your box of cereal and other snacks for when you are in heat. Yeah Steve learned to let that just stay out.) You might pile your clothes or leave some of the dresser drawers askew. You are not an overly messy person though. This is your first home in many years, having spent so much of your life with Pierce was kept locked away or kept for sale. The last home you even remember was pieces of your childhood one. So living in Steve's, it's all new and exciting and Steve can't find it in him to contain you from enjoying this freedom in any way you can, even if your slight messiness really clashes with his need for organization.
But you two share the chores, on a Sunday morning typically as Steve never has any plans for sure that day, the packs business is shut down on Sundays, and you will get music playing really loud and clean together, often singing and dancing around goofily in the process.
In the nest area, Steve lets Little One have full control. Whatever you want to do there. He will help of course, and step in when it's your heat and you get distressed trying to make it perfect. But it's still all with you in mind. He just goes with the flow, helping change sheets, putting the pillows where you want, and having certain items easily nearby in case you are seeking them. (Like one of his shirts, your favorite snacks, lotions, phone charger, etc.) All are tucked in a small basket that is slipped under the bed. Steve takes the nest space very personally and he wants it to be your favorite spot at home.
Now imagine their pup filling their lives... Steve's super clean house will be no more. XD But filled with love and laughs instead. I think that is a good trade off for our Alpha.
I hope this gives you a very soothing domestic glimpse in how our Alpha and his Little One live together. I love picturing them at home in their little cabin by the lake.
#amber answers#the pack#alpha steve and little one#being all domestic#i really adore and love these kind of questions

Know About the Different Types of Sweet in Hyderabad
Anyone who has visited Hyderabad even once has experienced the city's fantastic Telangana Pindi Vantalu. Hyderabad is known for its food, including signature dishes like Biriyani and Qubani ka Meetha1. The town is a jackpot if you're a foodie since everything is so delicious. Do you need anything Telangana Sweets and want to visit Hyderabad? This blog will look at some of the best Hyderabadi desserts.
Qubani ka Meetha:
Let's begin with Qubani ka Meetha, the city's most well-known and widely-recommended sweet. Delicious apricot, gulabjal, almond, and cream dessert. This dessert has long been served at the city's royal palaces. Once your taste senses become accustomed to the flavour of this dish, you will drool over it.
Halwa Jauzi:
Jauzi Halwa, a dessert you will remember, is up next. It all started in Hyderabad, but you can get it in supermarkets all around India now. But in terms of genuineness, Hyderabad has no equal. The Nizam of Hyderabad so well received the meal that the restaurant was renamed in honour of his son.
Shahi Tukda:
Although Shahi Tukda is now often found in homes across the country, its popularity in Hyderabad is unrivalled. This delicious treat, Double ka Meetha, is a must-have if you find yourself in the city. There's a chance you'll discover a new dessert that tops all the others you've tried. You can get Telangana Pindi Vantalu Online.
Sheer Khurma:
'Milk with dates' is the literal translation of the Persian phrase for Sheer Khurma. A special vermicelli pudding is prepared during celebrations such as Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Mauz ka Mitha:
You can find Mauz ka MItha, also known as the banana sweet in Hyderabad, in just about any restaurant in the city. Bananas, milk, ghee, sugar, and almonds are used in its preparation.
ShahjahaniMItha:
Even though it's prepared with tomatoes, this dessert is surprisingly sweet. Indeed, this is the pinnacle of tomato halwa preparations. Need to know what it is? Not a problem. You can find it in most candy stores, and it tastes amazing.
SemiyaPayasam:
It's a Kheer variation made with vermicelli and other sweet ingredients. This sweet treat can now be found in nearly every home in India. The one in Hyderabad, however, stands out for its superior quality and genuine flavour.
Nankhatai:
These biscuits are small bread that is quite popular in India and Pakistan. But the Nizami dynasty in Hyderabad is where Nankhatai got its start. It comes from the Persian term nan, which means bread, and the Afghan word khatam, which means cookies.
Akkaravadisal:
This best sweets in Hyderabad are a staple in Iyenger culture, also known as AkkaraAdisil. Milk, rice, and jaggery are the three main ingredients. It's a classic Brahmin dish that's very similar to Sakkarai Pongal.
Conclusion:
Don't worry if you're trying to stick to a diet; there are many options for getting the benefits of sugary foods without ruining your figure. Treat yourself to a small amount of sugary food once a week, at festivals, or on special occasions to boost your mood and energy levels.

Tomato Frittata
Feeds an army, tasty enough for them to come back for seconds. It works well for breakfast or dinner. This frittata is chock full of vegetables and protein - an important part of my healthy diet plan. Serve with romaine spears on the side for a fresh, cold crunch and cantaloupe chunks as a sweet ending.
1/2 t. coarse salt
1/2 t. Italian herb mix
18 eggs, whisked together
2 c. half and half
4 c. toasted bread, scissor cut into small chunks
3 c. fresh spinach leaves, scissor cut into ribbons
1 c. mushrooms, chopped
1 med. onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, seeded, diced
1 - 4 oz. can jalapeno peppers, with liquid
2 T. + fresh basil, scissor cut into ribbons
2 T. + fresh parsley, scissor cut
1 1/2 c. feta cheese, crumbled
1 c. Parmesan, grated
1 c. cherry tomatoes, multi-color
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a spouted mixing bowl, whisk salt, Italian herbs, eggs and milk. In a large greased, flat baking dish (lasagna pan works well) arrange bread pieces in a layer. On the bread, layer spinach, mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper. Add jalapenos, basil, parsley, and feta to egg mixture which will help evenly distribute the smaller pieces throughout the dish. Pour egg/milk/vegetables mixture over bread/vegetables coating all. Bake until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean - 60 min. approx. When it's done baking, let it rest for a short time on top of the stove to finish setting up...if you can wait that long.
Once dinner is in the oven and the table is set, I'm bounding down the stairs to my basement sewing room to stitch cotton pocket aprons for my online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/topdrawerthreads
Or, I'm busily putting the finishing touches on hand knit hats and scarves worked by me from upcycled recycled yarns - www.etsy.com/shop/topdraweryarns .
My daughters have an online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/yesdesigns - where they design and sew cotton pocket knickers for leisurely breakfast wearing.
My older daughter has an online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/wildwovenwomen - where she hand knits upcycled recycled yarns in various textures and colors into warm, cozy striped scarves and afghans.

How to Make Money from a Mini Farm
Chickens, Ducks, Quail
Eggs for Eating – You can sell your eggs to your friends, family, neighbors or farmer’s market. I wrote more about that here – Selling Eggs From Your Backyard Homestead. You’ll get the best price for free-range or pastured eggs.
Fertile Eggs – If you’re able to have a rooster on your property you may find a a business selling fertile eggs for others to set in their incubators. You’ll get more money for rare or popular breeds so do a little research on what people are looking for in your area.
Day Old Chicks or Ducklings – Some homesteaders do not want to deal with incubation. Theyd prefer to to buy young chicks for their brooder. You should also check with your local feed stores – they make be interested in carrying chicks, quail and ducklings; and on a regular basis.
Rabbits
Fiber Rabbits – I see more and more homesteaders spinning their own yarn. I believe fiber rabbits may become even more popular in the next few years. You can sell the rabbits or just their fibers (which does not require dispatching them). You’ll need a mentor to show you how to properly harvest the hair from your fiber rabbits for sale. See Raising Fiber Rabbits.
Pet Rabbits – As a mom that was bent on only raising meat rabbits, I still got suckered into a little pet Lionhead. Pet rabbits are fun and many seek them as alternatives to cats and dogs in the house. Lionheads are particularly popular with kids because of their sweet temperaments and fluff.
Rabbit Droppings – Yep, you CAN sell rabbit poop. Gardeners love that rabbit droppings can be composted or put right into their gardens for as a fertilizer. You can sell it by the bag full – and if you have a rabbit you know how much just one can produce each day.
Worms & Compost
Meal Worms – I can tell you my chickens and quail have always loved receiving fresh and dried meal worms as a treat. And raising meal worms is fairly easy. You can have a market through direct sales to owners of poultry, pet birds and pet lizards; but you may also have pet stores who will buy your stock.
Red Wigglers – Great for vermicomposting and fishing, red wigglers are a popular worm that you can grow for your own use as well as for sale. See How to Get Started Raising Red Wigglers.
Compost – From worm castings to compost for planting; if you have extra to sell you will quickly have a market.
Herbs
Sell fresh herb plants or cuttings – If you have the space to grow herbal transplants in small pot this can be a viable business. Also cuttings for people to dry for their own use, is another option.
Sell dried herbs – Or sell your herbs already dried and packaged.
Make your own herbal teas for sale – Do you make tea blends? You can make some from your own herbs or ones you purchase.
Garden
Seeds – Do you save seeds? You may have a market for selling your own seeds, especially if they are organic and/or heirloom varieties.
Transplants – I always seem to have more pepper and tomato seedlings than I really need. If you do too, or you want to do it on purpose, you could offer seedlings up for sales. Some people just don’t want to wait on seeds when they are planning and planting their gardens.
Fruit and Vegetables – Check your local rules and regulations first; but selling your excess harvest can bring a good income in. If you have enough, you may want to consider a booth at your local farmer’s market.
From Your Kitchen
If you’re skilled in the kitchen and have the time to produce extras, you might be able to sell your goods. You’ll need to see what laws there are about selling foods and see if you can meet the standards of your state first.
Jams, Jellies and other Canned Goods
Artisan Cheeses
Fresh Baked Breads
Starters for sourdough, kombucha, keifer, etc.
Crafts
This could be an entire post on it’s own because handmade items are popular at locally, in farmer’s markets and even online. If you have a gift for crafts you might just have a budding business right at your fingertips!
Homespun Yarn – Knitters and crocheters appreciate homespun yarn for their special projects.
Candles – Make candles in cute containers for sale. Or offer candles made from special ingredients like your homegrown beeswax.
Soaps, Lotions, Salves and Balms – If you love to make these handmade personal items you could have a wonderful business! Consider using locally grown / sourced, organic or specialty items whenever possible.
Needlecrafts – Do you sew? You could make reusable pads or offer mending or tailoring services. Do you knit or crochet? Make afghans, scarves, sweaters, or even wash clothes for sale! Do you quilt? Make handmade quilts to order and you could make a nice profit.
Woodworking – If you’re willing to practice woodworking, there are many products you could make and offer for sale. For best profits consider using woods offered for free or inexpensive scraps.

Not Meaningless - New Lease on Life, Chapter 2 (Kai Parker Fanfiction)
Hi everyone! Welcome to Chapter 2 of my Kai Parker BDSM Fanfiction, New Lease on Life.
If you haven't yet, please read this details post. It's very important to understanding the universe I've created for this series.
This is NOT meant to be read as a standalone one-shot. If you haven't, please check out Chapter 1 here.
*not my gif
Word Count: 4,346 words
Pairings: Heretic!Kai x Heretic!Reader; bestfriend!Damon x reader (platonic)
Proofreader: @socio-kai-path1972 (Thank you, darling!)
I don’t like writing with Y/N in the place of character names, but this IS a reader insert fanfiction. I use Rosalie Wilson as a placeholder. Use Rose/Rosalie as a substitution for Y/N.
Warnings: SMUT (Please do not read this if you are not of age), mentions of infidelity, violence, and mature language
Warnings (cont.): light bondage, unprotected sex (be safe, friends!) Dom!Kai, daddy kink, and fingering
The story begins below :) Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it!
~~~
Rosalie's POV:
My fingers glided against the plastic keyboard, glad to be closing the sale of my Manhattan Brownstone. I wouldn’t be returning there anymore. I had no reason to. My gaze drifted to Kai who was sound asleep on our couch. One ray of afternoon sun landed on his face, making his ethereal skin glow. I closed the curtain with my magic very slowly, watching the sunlight get dimmer and dimmer until it disappeared.
It had been three weeks since I’d met Kai and three weeks since I’d been living with him. We weren’t together. Not exactly. True to his word, he hadn’t asked to be with me since that first morning. Beyond a kiss on the cheek or a half-snuggle on the couch, Malachai didn’t touch me. After lying beside him at night, I’d find him wrapped around me in the morning, holding me to his chest. I couldn’t bring myself to complain about it.
I missed him, even when he was right in front of me. I just couldn’t go there again. I was too broken to love him the way he should be loved, and Kai had pain to last a lifetime already. I would not add myself to the list of people who destroy him. Pulling the Afghan blanket I stole from Damon and never returned to cover his chest, I rested my hand on Kai’s hair, smoothing it back just once. Muttering a spell under my breath, I watched as his body sank into the upholstery. If his guilt wasn’t keeping him up at night, it was horrid nightmares. This was the only thing I could do to help – to calm his broken heart – and it was killing me.
After taking in one more tender eyeful, I grabbed my wallet and phone. Our faces gleamed up at me, along with the time: 2:43 P.M. He’d be waking soon, and I wanted to grab us both some coffee before we settled into whatever activity he had in mind for the afternoon. The trip to Bread and Butter Bakery was a short one, just long enough for me to remember my first time there.
“Oh, this place is new!” Damon snickered. “Not quite. This place has been here for around 12 years, which, coincidently, was the last time you were in Mystic Falls.” Rolling my eyes, I ordered a coffee, black with a tiny splash of half and half. “Had you asked me here sooner, I’d have dropped everything and come back, you know.” His lips pressed upwards in a small smile, and he ruffled my hair. “Damon! Public. Watch it.”
“Rosalie! I don’t care. No!” Our banter seemed to elicit laughs from others in the bakery, making Damon gleam with pride. “Oh, be quiet.” I took a small sip, impressed by the quality of the roast. For a small town, this was exceptional. “Told you the coffee here beats anything you’ll find in the Big Apple.”
“Now, that’s a stretch, but I concur.” The chimes above the door jingled then, and I was taken by the sweet sound until Damon said, “Oh look, it’s your new roommate.” He wasn’t very happy that I was staying with Malachai and not with him – he was more protective of me than he’d admit – but Damon always respected my decisions. We’d been there for each other in very dark times, and he knew my tolerance for anguish better than anyone.
“Ooh, coffee. Their cupcakes are kinda sad though.” Kai joined us without invitation, stealing a sip from my mug. “Hey, get your own.” Smacking his hand away softly, I stole my cup back. “How do you take your coffee by the way?”
Malachai grinned cheekily and dramatically cleared his throat before speaking in a gravelly voice, “As dark and bitter as my soul.” Biting the inside of my cheek, I tagged down a waitress. “Excuse me. If you have a second, please get my friend here a glass of milk.” Damon sputtered mid-sip, choking on his lukewarm beverage and laughter.
The memory was warm, warm enough against the chilly November wind. My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I glanced at it. It was Kai, presumably worried about where I headed off to. This boy with abandonment issues needed a note if I left without telling him. “Kai? I’m almost home, just went to grab some coffee.” He was flustered and slightly embarrassed. “Oh… Uhm. Sorry.” I touched my cold cheek, unsurprised at the smile that formed every time I spoke to him. “Aww, missing me already?” I didn’t hear his response.
The phone nearly slipped from my grip. My smile was gone. The coffee cups splattered to the ground, staining the smooth sidewalk. “K-Kai, I’ll see you soon.” Hanging up, I swallowed harshly as he sauntered closer. A leering, conceited smirk formed on his face. “Hello, Rosalie.” The expression sent a chill down my spine in the most unpleasant way imaginable.
“Jason.”
Kai's POV:
Waking from sleep always frightened me. It was idiotic, really. Whenever I found myself alone, my brain began spinning horrid false realities, telling me I was still locked up and alone. My thoughts were telling me Rosalie was just a dream, my freedom was just a dream. The first thing I did was call Rose. Hearing her voice was the only way to convince me I was alive. The sound of her was something no mind could concoct; mine certainly couldn’t.
I was a bit mortified, but she was ever-patient with me. The dial tone was abrupt, but I didn’t think much of it. The shift in her mood was a different matter. I remained lying on the couch, staring at the synthetic stars plastered to the ceiling. Rosalie added them, and though I said nothing, they reminded me of our first night together under the stars; they brought me a great deal of calm.
Then, I heard the clinking of keys against the lock. Forcing myself to not immediately jump up to greet her, I rose slowly, waiting to hear her footsteps come in. I felt something else, too. Anger. Despair. Sheer loathing. It flowed from Rosalie in waves, consuming any happiness in the room.
“Rosalie! What’s wrong?” I sat up immediately, letting her approach me instead of rushing to her side. It took much more control than I was capable of. “Why is he here? Why now?” Her whisper wouldn’t have reached my ears had I not been a vampire. Who was here?
“Who, Rose?” She had gone silent now, stumbling over to the couch and just barely making it. I reflexively caught her then, gripping her woolen sweater tightly. Rose was already crying. They were tears thick with resentment and hidden suffering. Her shoulders shook, her body wracking with torment. Rosalie didn’t hesitate to crawl into my lap. I didn’t mind in the slightest, but I froze for a fraction of a second.
I had never held anyone like this, never had anyone rely on me to absolve their pain. I didn’t know what I should do, so I just did what felt right. One hand splayed across her back, fingers spread to cover as much area as possible and soothe her. The other naturally draped over Rose’s legs folded in my lap, and I hooked it under her thigh to pull her as close as possible. There was no thought as to how this crossed the boundaries of our friendship, no thought of impropriety. I just needed her to know I was here for her; I wouldn’t let go.
Her shoulders rose and fell with hastened breathing coupled with choking sobs. Evidence of Rosalie’s pain seeped into my bare neck. Pressing my cheek to her hair, I listened to her cries. Many thoughts rushed through my mind, each one more violent than the next. I didn’t know who it was, and I didn’t know what they had done, but I swore they would pay. They would pay dearly, no matter the cost to me.
Eventually – I didn’t know if it was a few minutes or hours later – Rosalie calmed. The crying stopped, but I wouldn’t dare let her go, not when she was so vulnerable. Fragile, like pure china. One wrong wind could break the strong exterior Rose fronted. She started to slide away from my lap, and my grip on her tightened before reluctantly releasing her. “I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to apologize for, Rose. Nothing at all.” In what universe would I be upset with her? She was in deep agony, and I was only upset I couldn’t fix it. Cooling my hands with a spell, I pressed my palms against her hot, throbbing, exhausted eyelids. Tension escaped her muscles. “I… need to share what happened with Jason. The whole story.”
Jason. I hadn’t heard the name in weeks, and I could’ve done with never hearing it again. But I shoved the anger back. This wasn’t the time. I would listen to her every word, knowing his existence was worthless the second he dared to hurt her.
Rosalie's POV:
Taking a deep, shaky breath, I reached for the stale glass of water on the table. Chugging down a good half before beginning, I looked into Kai’s eyes. He was subsuming his anger for my sake, and though I was grateful, I wished he didn’t have to. “I met him in the May of 1972.” Shifting away from him momentarily, I closed my eyes and forced myself to recall the memories I ached to forget.
“I was in a very vulnerable place when he entered my life. I had lost both my adoptive parents – my real parents – in a horrible accident. They loved me much more than the human parents who disowned me. The days were solemn, then. Damon had spent months with me, getting me to turn my humanity back on. Once I was back to my senses, Damon left to chase a lead on freeing Katherine from the tomb.
“I was doing everything I could to keep myself alive, even if it felt like there was no reason to live anymore. The only one in the world who still loved me was Damon, and at the time, I thought he could do better without me.
“I spent the hours of the day hiding in the corner of this café in New York. Jason had been a barista there, and I knew he was a vampire the second his fingers brushed mine. He intrigued me at first. Of all the jobs a vampire could do, why would he choose to be a barista? Soon, I started to look forward to seeing him. He’d take extra care when clearing the area near my table, drew cute flowers in my coffee with foam, and never failed to linger and talk to me.” The memories brought a soft smile to my face. Things had been much easier.
“Jason made me feel seen at a time when I felt most alone, and the feeling drew me to him.” I looked anywhere else but refused to look at Kai. If he were to stop me, I would stop. But I needed the catharsis. If I looked at him, my story would remain locked inside me, never to be heard. “We had been friends for over ten years when he asked me to be with him forever. It was a proposal of sorts, I guess.
“I had no reason to say no, but I wasn’t as elated as I should’ve been. I was happy, I suppose, and I did love Jason. Just not the way I should have. I know that now. Nevertheless, it felt nice to have him – to have someone. Things were fine until a few years ago.” This is where everything had gone wrong. Of course, I had no one to blame but myself. “I… I’d been hiding my magic from him for all that time. I had my reasons, but when I finally told him, Jason pretended to accept me.”
I was right not to share my past with Jason. He had taken enough of my dignity from me. “I had given more of myself to him than I had given to anyone ever before. He had all of me, he just failed to tell me he no longer wanted me. Things were rough between us, so I suggested taking a break. I used that time to travel, and he used that time to find a new girlfriend. When I wanted to pause, he was already checked out. I had failed as a girlfriend, and the only one responsible was me.”
The loss of first love was crushing as if the air had been stolen from my lungs. However, it brought with it a sense of clarity. I had stopped loving him long ago, and the realization brought me peace, not disarray. “The only thing I blame on him is the lie. I lied by omission – I admit that – but he lied directly to my face.
“That night, the night we went to the Falls together, it wasn’t Jason that called. His girlfriend took great pleasure in gloating to me about how he had been seeing her for over nine years and how she was the only one for him. Jason kept me around in case my magic could ever be of use to him.” I half-laughed and cried simultaneously. That’s all he saw me as. A tool. A toy.
Kai's POV:
I listened quietly, absorbing Rosalie’s story. Her every teardrop, every tremble, every crack in her voice was a sledgehammer to my heart. She blamed herself for what that motherfucking bastard did. Once her words had run their course, she excused herself from my presence. I think she was trying to mask the trails of salt on her cheeks, and I heard one choked, muffled sob sing out from behind the bathroom door. “Rose? You don’t have to hide. Please don’t hide.”
I felt utterly useless. I couldn’t help. I couldn’t take her pain and bear it for her. I could only listen, and that felt like nothing. When Rosalie returned, heading to the kitchen instead to put a pot of tea on, the ire fueled up within me again. He betrayed her – her, the most selfless, loving creature I had ever known – and now he brought his fucking face in front of her again. If he came to Mystic Falls, he better have come with a death wish.
I approached Rose slowly, not knowing what to say. Tenderly, I wrapped my arms around her and felt her tense under my touch. “Rosalie, I need you to listen to me. None of this was your fault. You had your reasons for not telling him you are a siphon, and he failed to respect them.” Her puffy, tired eyes met my own, and I pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
He had her for over three decades, and he must have been blind to fail to see what I saw in her on my third day with her. “He didn’t value what he had, and that makes him the biggest fucking imbecile I’ve ever heard of. Except for Damon, maybe.” That tugged a small laugh from her, and I smoothed her hair back. Grabbing a mug, I poured some tea for Rose before making her sit on the granite kitchen island. “Now.” My fingertip booped her nose playfully. “Put a smile on that face, because I’m about to make you the best spaghetti you’ve ever eaten.”
Rosalie's POV:
That evening, Kai did everything humanly possible to cheer me up. His efforts melted me to the core. Malachai had so much love to give, it was astounding. I could only imagine the mistreatment he endured, the mistreatment that drove his sanity away for a few years. What horrors were evil enough to steal a light so precious from within him?
Right now, Malachai was bringing me along on his adventure to find the best hot chocolate in all of Mystic Falls. My arm was linked with his, and I was listening intently to his analysis of chocolate beverages in different countries. “Hey, do they still make PDQ chocolate mix? That stuff was my entire childhood. The tolerable part, anyway.” My feet came to a stop. Twenty feet away, Jason stumbled out of the Mystic Grill, intoxicated beyond belief. “Kai, we should g–”
“Rose!” Wincing, I watched Kai’s head snap towards the sound. His bicep clenched under my fingers, and I could see how he strained himself to keep his feet grounded. “Is that… him?” Swallowing nervously, I nodded, “Let’s just leave, please.”
“Where are you going, love? Oh, this the boy-toy you were on the phone with earlier?” God damn it. I didn’t have the chance to tell Kai everything about our encounter earlier, so I prayed he didn’t deduce any incorrect meaning.
Kai's POV:
Something fierce woke within me, something outrageously protective. Moving Rose so that she stood behind me, I towered over Jason. My eyes gave him a silent threat. He was either really brave or really fucking stupid to ignore it. “How long did it take you to jump into bed with him?” Rosalie’s breath caught in her throat at the insult, and yet he didn’t shut up. “Listen, Jason.” I clutched the collar of his leather jacket harshly, having half a mind to behead him right there. For the first time in months, I craved to feel blood on my hands.
“I’m warning you. Shut the fuck up and walk away. Now.” He laughed – the motherfucker actually laughed. “Oooh, I’m so scared. You know, she used to be a really good slut for me. Is Rosalie an obedient little bitch for you, too?”
That was it. I broke both his arms and legs, leaving him wailing on the ground. His scream woke something within me, and I wanted more of it. I wanted him to suffer and cry, torture him until he begged for his death. “Kai! Stop… please.” The momentary distraction made this vermin think he had the upper hand. In his attempt to shove me off, he was the one who ended up with my fingers in his chest, clutching his weakly-beating heart. One move and he’d be gone. “Malachai!”
The mortal fear in his eyes brought me great delight. “If you ever try to speak to her again – try to even look at her again – I will rip your heart out and make you swallow it. Is that in any way misunderstood?” He whimpered in fear, nodding like his life depended on it, and I let him go. Taking Rosalie’s hand, I ran to our apartment, feeling like my every vein could explode. Was she still protecting him? After all he’d done and all he’d said?
Rosalie's POV:
My heart tightened in anguish when I saw Kai’s anger. I never wanted to reduce him to that state again, especially not for my sake. The silence was lead, weighing down on both of us. The second the door closed behind me, Malachai pushed me against it. One hand found the lock; the other protected the back of my head as he slammed a searing kiss against my lips. Every movement spoke of desperate possession.
“You are mine; do you understand me?” His lustful growl echoed, sending tingles over every inch of me. He gripped me tightly, forcing me to jump and wrap my legs around my waist without letting me free. He moved away, and his hand touched my cheek with an unexpectedly soft sensation, very different from his voice just seconds ago. “Answer me, Rose.” There was no reason to be afraid, no reason to hesitate. My arms wrapped around Kai’s neck, fingers playing with the strands of hair at the base. “Yes. I’m yours.” For however long you’ll have me.
I was a flame, and he was kerosene. His hot mouth claimed mine again, his tongue encroaching against my own. The smooth wood of the door moved from under me, weightlessness making my stomach light. Malachai didn’t bother with taking us to the bedroom. I felt the leather of the couch under me, his comforting weight laying on me like a blanket. My legs remained hooked around him, and, unabashedly, Kai tore my top down the center, eager to reach the flesh below. I, too, yearned for him.
I didn’t have a chance to fulfill that yearning, though, for Kai took both of my hands and pinned my wrists above my head before I had the opportunity to feel him. “I will claim you as mine over and over and over again until you can’t do anything but scream my name.” Fuck, that was hot. “If you need me to stop, tell me now. I won’t ask again, baby girl.” As he spoke, his lips ravaged my breasts, wetting the silken velvet hiding my nipples. Why would I want to protest against such absolute pleasure? “Don’t you dare stop.” Before I realized it, Kai had carried me into our bedroom, throwing me onto the bed with such speed the bed itself shifted to hit the wall.
“That sounded like quite the order, and the only one giving commands tonight will be me, got that?” His hand clutched my face sharply, not causing me any pain but enticing me just enough to earn a moan in response. “Yes…”
“Yes, what?” If I were to submit to him tonight, he’d have me forever. If he were to ever leave me, it would break me beyond imagining. We had flirted about this before, but this was a point of no return.
No. The point of no return had long since passed. I had belonged to him since the first moment his eyes took mine. I just hadn’t known it until now. “Yes, Daddy.” His snarl of approval was muffled as he ripped his shirt from his body, using it to confine my hands and restrain them to the headboard. “Good girl.”
Then, he looked down on me from above, the blue eyes I love ablaze with passion and wont. “If I go too far, tell me right away. I’m not going to ever hurt you, please know that.” I did know that. Every fiber of my being understood. Momentarily forgetting about my imprisoned wrists, I ached to touch him. He fulfilled that wish without a word and a tender kiss. “I know, Kai. I trust you.”
He took his time that night. His lips seldom left my skin. They first left a mark above my breast, and my mewls of enjoyment egged him on to grasp more of my body. Without warning – I hadn’t even noticed when he made my panties vanish – Kai plunged two of his fingers inside me, curling them upwards. “Look at that… Aren’t you a naughty girl? So wet already.”
My nails dug into my palms with nowhere else to go. “Daddy…” He hummed in response, not halting his masterful tongue as it flicked against a hardened nipple. “Please…”
“Please what, baby girl? I’m gonna need you to be more specific.” Toying with me purposely, he slowed his fingers down, forcing me to beg for more. “More… Please.” Kai chuckled in the heavy dark, sucking on the bud lacking attention. “Not very specific at all, but I’ll let it slide this time.” Then, he gave me what I wanted. His fingers pounded into me eagerly, driving me wild. I lost count of how many orgasms he tore out of me until he’d had his fill of watching me writhe for the night.
Just as his fingers earlier, he slammed into me harshly. Neither of us remembered to put a silencing spell on our apartment, and I was certain my scream rang out into the street below. Kai’s lips covered mine, swallowing the rest of my shrieks of pleasure. His hard length breached every defense, claiming me over and over, just as he promised.
The bed – and my wrists – thrashed under the wild lovemaking. The rapture devouring my senses made my toes curl, and when his sea flooded inside me, I exploded like never before. My mind went numb, having no way to process the outstanding, nearly excruciating bliss.
He, too, was silent and spent. Gingerly untying my hands, Kai soothed the raw wrists with loving kisses. Then, he wasted no time in scooping me into him. Neither of us spoke for a while, and when we did, it was in perfect unison. “That was… amazing.”
Kai's POV:
Though wonderful, tonight was sparked due to my severe envy. “Why did you stop me from hurting, Ja– hurting him?” I wasn’t going to ever utter his name again. “Were you… protecting him?” Rosalie almost giggled, and my eyes narrowed. Nothing about this was funny.
“Oh, Kai, I wasn’t protecting him. I was protecting you.” The jealousy came to a staggering end. “You’ve come so far from darkness and violence, love. I don’t care about saving his life; I care about saving yours. I don’t think you’d be able to forgive yourself for another…” Another murder. She was right, of course, though for him, I could’ve made an exception.
I had been shunned my whole life for something I couldn’t control. Here was a woman who willingly offered herself to me. She didn’t run, nor did she reject me once. She protected me from falling to darkness again, and I would be indebted to her as long as I lived. “Thank you, baby girl. Thank you for saving me.” My Rose just lay silently on my chest, slowly drifting off to sleep. I wasn’t sure if she had heard my gratitude, but I would show it every day.
Long into the night, I continued to lay awake, committing this moment to memory. None of it had been meaningless. The agonizing childhood, the unbearable years in the Prison World, the loss of my family… none of it. Everything had led me to her, and all the horrors in my past suddenly seemed inconsequential compared to the happiness that awaited us.
Last night, I lost one of the best friends I'll ever have. Kif passed away. I don't know how many of you were aware of this, but for about the last nine months, he has been in the end stages of congestive heart failure. He was doing well on medication, and then he wasn't. It really only treats the symptoms. We don't know if the coyote attack was just one thing too many for his ailing body to take, or if his poor heart couldn't get enough oxygen to the important parts of his body, and we're never going to know. And it doesn't matter. All that matters is that he's gone.
Kif was a brave, funny, loving, and intensely loyal friend. This November would have marked 10 years together for us. I managed to calm down enough last night to get some sleep, and I felt okay when I woke up, but then I got up and he wasn't here, and it seemed so impossible and so unfair that I'm a sobbing mess again. I was his person. Even in the past few days, when his little body was struggling so much, if I had to go out, when I came back home he would be at the top of the stairs screaming because he was so happy to see me. I loved him so, so much.
Kif was a complicated creature. He never learned more than a few commands, even when I took him to professional training, but he was a criminal mastermind when it came to stealing food. More than once, he managed to open the bread drawer and eat a loaf of bread, and a few weeks ago, he got down a Tupperware of cookies from a high counter, broke them out of their container, and (I hope) shared them with his friends. (Though I cannot rule out the possibility that he ate 18 cookies by himself.) He was afraid to go outside (beyond the safety of his yard) or even in the car, but he would put his body between me and something scary and growl. He looked so delicate and regal, but in truth he was a big goof who would walk around the house with a full-sized afghan attached to his collar and who loved nothing more than cuddling with the other dogs by sitting on top of them. He was so sweet and so loving, and I'm so glad I got to spend these ten years with him as my dog, even though losing him hurts so much I feel like I'm missing an organ. I hope that his pain is gone, and that he's happy, and that heaven has heated dog beds and popcorn chicken.
I love you so much. I miss you so much. Thank you for being my dog.
hmmmmm... North, Sophie, and Baby Tooth!
Good choices!
North - Do you have any tattoos? If not, do you want tattoos?
I do not have any tattoos, and am not likely to get any, although I admire the artwork and the skill immensely. I do daydream, on occasion that, if I have to have my “upper architecture” removed for medical reasons, I would have vines and flowers etched along my scars.
Sophie - What is your favorite candy/sweets?
Currently battling it out between tiramisu and cinnamon raisin bread. I tend not to crave sweets, and I almost never eat candy.
Baby Tooth - What makes you feel at home?
When I’m not actually AT HOME, that is? Hmmmm. I think of friends’ domiciles with wainscotting and French doors and cats and polished wooden floors and quilts or afghans on the back of every rumpsprung chair and couch, and someone playing either a twelve-string guitar or a hammered dulcimer.
At the "Crossroads of Asia": The Transnationality of Afghan Cuisine
Words and imagery by Munazza Ebtikar
[caption: Panjshir پنجشیر,, Afghanistan]
When I introduce Afghan cuisine to my peers, I am immediately asked whether it is “more like Persian or Indian food?”
This question reflects the obscurity of the country for those whose understanding of Afghanistan has been shaped by the recent wars. This understanding has also been supported by the dominant narrative that insists on the static and closed-off position of Afghanistan, which ignores its sub-national and transnational characteristics.
Yet sharing a border with Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, and China, Afghanistan lies at the crossroads of the Middle East, Central Asia, East Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. The country’s contemporary boundaries relate more to superpower interests than the common identities of its inhabitants, as Afghans share historical, cultural, and linguistic ties with their neighbors. One such tie can be found in its cuisine.
[caption: Kabobs and fried fish with locally made bread, Panjshir پنجشیر, Afghanistan]
With over 30 different ethnolinguistic groups, Afghanistan’s ethnic and geographical diversity is reflected in the distance between the round Uzbek bread and specialized dumplings more commonly made in the northern and northwestern regions of the country and the varieties of kabāb کباب (such as the round flat-shaped spiced beef patty called chapli-kabāb) found in the southern areas. Of course, multiple dishes overlap across the country, the difference between them is the method of preparation and their presentation.
Afghan appetizers consist of various types of borāni, which are sautéed vegetables topped with strained yogurt. This includes borāni-bānjān (with eggplant), borāni-kadu (with pumpkin), or sabzi-borāni (spinach borāni).
According to legend, the word “borāni” comes from the name of the daughter of Khosrow II, the last Sassanian emperor, whose name was Pouran. A queen in the 5th century, Pouran is mentioned under the name of Pourandukht in Ferdowsi’s great Persian epic poem, the Shāhnāmah. Pourandukht was apparently very fond of yogurt, which is why vegetables commonly found in borāni are made with yogurt.
Borāni dishes are shared with Iran, Turkey, and the Caucasus. Another appetizer in Afghanistan is bread stuffed with gandana (Chinese chives) or potatoes called bolāni, which is served with a yogurt dip.
[caption: Ay Khanum (”Lady Moon”) آی خانم large dumplings with rose-like shape from Afghanistan.]
Pasta-based dishes or dumplings hold an important place in Central and East Asian cuisine. In Afghanistan, there are soups containing noodles (such as āsh).
The two essential dumpling dishes include mantu, dumplings with ground beef served with strained yogurt and topped with tomato sauce and sprinkled with dried dill or mint, and āshak, dumplings filled with Chinese chives topped with yogurt and tomato meat sauce, sprinkled with dried mint and dill.
Mantu منتو is comparable to its Central Asian, Turkish, South Caucasian, and East Asian counterparts, including the Turkish mantı or the Korean mandu. The main difference is the shape of the dumplings, as large dumplings are more popular in Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, while smaller dumplings are more common in Turkey. These pasta dishes, like dairy products, may have spread during the Mongol and Timurid periods.
Dairy products have historically been staple foods of pastoral and nomadic tribes in Central Asia, Afghanistan, and the larger Iran plateau. They may have initially spread from Central Asian tribes in the Mongol and Timurid periods. Yogurt is an essential part of Afghan cuisine as it is either served as a side, as a sauce or made into a refreshing drink called dōgh.
Dōgh دوغ, known as such in Iran and as ayran in Turkey and other Central Asian countries, is a cold yogurt drink mixed with salt, occasionally with cucumbers and mint depending on its consumer. It is a common drink that Afghans have with their meals, mostly in the summers.
Similarly, qurut قروت (known by Iranians and Kurds as kashk) is made from drained sour milk, shaped into chunks and left to dry. It is either eaten as a snack or made with the dish kichiri qurut (sticky rice, usually served with meatballs and drenched in qurut). Qurut is shared with cuisines from the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula to Central Asia and the Caucasus.
Rice (called berenj in Persian, related to the Sanskrit vrīhí) have originated from India and brought to the region more than a millennium ago. It is cultivated in more moist areas of the country such as Jalalabad or Laghman.
Rice has become an indispensable part of Afghan cuisine as it is consumed in all regions of the country, yet those from middle and upper socioeconomic backgrounds have it more regularly. The crowning dish of Afghan cuisine is qābili palaw, a rice dish typically made with lamb and seasoned with grated carrots, almonds, and raisins. Other types of popular rice dishes include Sabzi chalaw or zamarrod palaw, rice with spinach, narenjpalaw, rice with orange peel, reshta-palaw rice with fine egg noodles, yakhni palaw, rice with mutton, and landi pilau rice with dried meat.
Kalla-pâcha, a labor-intensive traditional dish that is served usually on special occasions, consists of a sheep’s head with its four trotters and the sheep’s other edible parts usually served in cold weather. Most of these rice dishes are shared with Afghanistan’s Central Asian and Iranian neighbors, and qābili palaw is shared as a national dish with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, where it is known as āsh or palaw (or āsh-e palaw). Afghan stew or qorma (from Turkish kavurmak, which means to roast or boil) accompanies white rice (chalaw) and can be made with meat (qorme gosht), with fruits such as plums (qorme alu bukhara) or, like the Iranian ghormeh Sabzi, with spinach and meat. Qorma is shared, in different variations, with the Indian subcontinent.
Tea (or chay) accompanies every meal or is simply drunk by itself, either plain or with a touch of cardamom at home, at a chāykhānah (tea-house), or in a samovar. Prior to relying on Indian export of tea, it was imported from China via Bukhara, and the habit of drinking tea may have been made popular by the Mongols in western Asia.
Afghans drink both green (chāy sabz) and black tea (chāy siyāh) and in some cases, mixed with sugar and clotted cream (qaymaq-chay), which is mostly drunk on special occasions. The preference for green tea over black tea depends on the region within the country, as black tea is drunk mostly in the regions north and east of Afghanistan and in Tajikistan, while green tea is drunk in the northwest of Afghanistan and throughout most of Uzbekistan. Green tea is classified as a “cold” drink, as it is mostly consumed in the summer, while black tea, a “hot” drink, is normally consumed in the winter.
Tea is accompanied with sweets such as sugar-coated almonds (noql-e bādāmi), or dried fruits, including dried mulberries, almonds, pine-nuts, walnuts, pistachios, raisins, all of which are found in abundance in Afghanistan.
Rice-puddings such as shol-e zard (rice dessert made with saffron) shol-e shirin (sweet rice with nuts), as well as gush-e-fil (tr. elephant ears) or locally made cookies (kolcha), are all hallmarks of Afghan dessert. Other popular desserts in Afghanistan include the Turkish baklava, Indo-Arab zalabia (known as jelabi in Afghanistan), or the dessert shared with Iran such as firini and halwā. A meal does not end with dessert, but with fruits. Seasonal fruit, depending on the region, can include pomegranates, melons, grapes, apricots, cherries, and peaches, complete an Afghan meal.
The transnationality of Afghan cuisine illustrates that modern boundaries do little to divide the shared cultural and historical heritage of Afghanistan with the wider region. Afghanistan is not an exceptional or exceptionally closed-off country in this sense, but the product of a long legacy at the ‘crossroads of Asia’.
