School Spirits Season 1 to 2x04 Bare Bones Recap

*Spoilers for School Spirits Season 1 and 2x01-2x04

It's been expressed to me a few times that some of my friends are confused about what's happened. I thought I would type up a fairly chronological timeline of events to this point. Obviously I'm leaving a lot of details out because this is meant for people to refresh themselves on major plot points, not just tell the entire story of the show. I've left most of the relationship stuff out, unless it's directly relevant to the main plot.

Bare bones recap (as of 2x04) in mostly chronological order, maybe it will help-

Mr. Martin taught Janet at Split River in the 50s. Janet was academically excellent, with dreams to go to college, but her abusive father was against it.

Mr. Martin and Janet both died at the school, probably in a fire in chem lab (this is a little contested, and may be revealed to be inaccurate) and became ghosts (1958).

Those who died at the school are unable to leave the property.

The chem lab, in which Mr. Martin and Janet died, burned down and a fallout shelter was built in its place/underneath.

Rhonda was murdered by her guidance counselor (Mr. Manfredo) in the school and became a ghost (1963).

Wally died on the football field during a football game (1983).

Charley died in the cafeteria from a peanut allergy (1994).

Ghosts are generally unable to interact with the living world.

At some point in here, Mr. Martin and Janet began experiments regarding the ghosts. They collected objects that were with each of the ghosts when they died (e.g. Wally's football). These items function as "keys" that allow the ghosts to access what they are calling "scars" (the location of their deaths, portrayed in red lighting, that causes them to relive their trauma). The purpose (assuming there is one) of the scars is still unknown.

Mr. Martin gives the ghosts assignments that he tells them are to help them "cross over" (to whatever is beyond death), but he was actually studying the ghosts (we assume).

At some point, Janet and Mr. Martin discover ways to interact/manipulate the rules of their reality, making items that are permanent, and possibly discovering other abilities.

Janet has some kind of change of heart about the experiments and wants to return the stolen items (the keys) to the other ghosts, which Mr. Martin disagrees with. This was the last night that any of the other ghosts saw her, and they believed that she crossed over at this time (2022ish).

Janet did not cross over, but was instead imprisoned by Mr. Martin in the fallout shelter.

Maddie and the other living characters are attending Split River High. Maddie is best friends with Simon and Nicole, and she is dating Xavier (the sheriff's son). She used to be best friends with Claire (head cheerleader), but they had a falling out years ago.

Xavier is secretly cheating on Maddie with Claire, which is only really relevant in that it makes him look very suspicious throughout season 1.

Maddie, Simon, and Nicole have plans to move to Chicago for college, but Nicole didn't get the scholarship she needed, so unbeknownst to Maddie and Simon, Nicole can't afford it. (2023)

Nicole witnesses (and films) an argument between Claire and Mr. Anderson (English teacher) that reveals that Claire was blackmailing Mr. Anderson for good grades.

Mr. Anderson had stolen money from the school. Nicole anonymously blackmails him with the video she takes in order to get money for college. Nicole later buries this money in the woods.

Maddie's mother (who struggles with alcoholism) arrives at the school drunk. Maddie goes to confront her and discovers that she spent all of the money saved for Maddie to go to college. Maddie, in a highly emotional state, ends up just outside of the fallout shelter.

Maddie hears people arguing and someone calling for help. She opens the door to the fallout shelter, where she sees Mr. Martin. Meanwhile Janet, fleeing the fallout shelter, crashes into Maddie, causing her to hit her head, and knocks Maddie's spirit out of her body (so now Maddie's body has Janet's spirit in it).

Janet (in Maddie's body) escapes from the school using a tunnel from the fallout shelter. Maddie wakes up as a ghost in the school and without any memories of what happened to her, and she is reported missing (because Janet has taken Maddie's body and is in hiding).

Mr. Anderson and Claire believe Maddie was the one blackmailing them with the video, and cause some chaos for the investigation (ultimately red herrings) into Maddie's disappearance in attempts to cover this up.

Simon, Maddie's best friend, discovers that he can see and speak to Maddie's ghost, and the two begin to try to solve her murder (they believe she was murdered because she is a ghost).

Simon uncovers that Mr. Anderson stole money from the school and he is fired/arrested.

The ghosts discover that Mr. Martin lied to them about Janet crossing over and that he has been using them as test subjects (exactly for what, we don't know).

Janet (in Maddie's body) hangs around the town, squatting in abandoned houses, because she does not have the means to leave. Eventually, she digs up and steals the blackmail money that Nicole buried in the woods.

Simon, Nicole, Xavier, and Claire end up coming together to try to solve what happened to Maddie.

Mr. Martin locks several the ghosts up in the fallout shelter, but is confronted by Maddie, whose memories have returned. When she questions what he has been doing, he flees. Maddie is unable to catch up to him.

Janet steals Xavier's car (and hits him with it), then buys a bus ticket to get out of town.

Maddie and the other ghosts discover the scars (which they were previously unaware of), which Mr. Martin seems to be able to access at will and is using to avoid them. The ghosts use Janet's notebooks/research to try to understand what she and Mr. Martin were doing.

Xavier dies in the hospital and sees other ghosts, but is revived. This experience helps him believe that Simon is actually speaking with Maddie's ghost. Nicole and Claire as skeptical, but Nicole begins to come around a bit later, with Claire being the final holdout.

Janet returns to her childhood home and burns it down. She then loses the money she stole from Nicole, and so returns to Maddie's home, pretending to be Maddie.

Simon, Xavier, Nicole, and Claire (who have been searching for Maddie's body) are made aware that Janet (in Maddie's body) has returned to town.

Meanwhile, the ghosts experience a supernatural phenomenon that only happened before when Janet took over Maddie's body, leading them to believe that another "living" character has been possessed by Mr. Martin (the only ghost they are aware of that might know how to possess someone). Whether or not that is a correct assumption has yet to be seen.

And that's where we are now.

Barely two weeks into their final summer before college, Nicole and Jecka self-destruct into a firestorm of bottled trauma, lies, sex, drugs, and not nearly enough punk rock to justify their bullshit.

Unfortunately, or, in Emily's case, fortunately, the fallout is so catastrophic that it drags basically everybody they know into the inescapably messy black hole they’ve left in their wake.

It’s one hell of a day.

Nicole Maines is so funny. The Jay-Nia beef will go down in legend. Jon can't even pick sides because....technically....Nia is the antagonist. Jay is right! But Nia was put into her position through manipulation. All three of them; Jon, Jay, Nia- ended up being used against each other through their oppression, who was ALSO used and oppressed through systematic oppression.

Ugh, their relationship is so FUN to think about!!! All three of them were alone, all three found friendship and camaraderie with one another. Nia specifically has found lots of solidarity with queer friends and JayJon are some among them.

And then, they break apart. Not because of anything they did voluntarily to one another, but by forces outside that are just too strong. All of three have had their lives constantly ruined by forces so much bigger than them, with no one to notice or help. PAIN. AGONY.

The spring semester roars into action and the gang splits up among its many classes. Mitsumi is determined to corral as many new friends as possible, to make the most of her burgeoning high-school experience, but reality is a bit crueler than she was expecting. SKIP AND LOAFER v7 renews its focus as a character drama, and in doing so, deftly splits its characters' time and expectations between manifesting and navigating the uncertainty inherent in new (and unstable) interpersonal dynamics.

Mitsumi and Makoto share a class, and together they come to the awkward agreement that Mitsumi may have spoiled her good fortune as a first-year student. But have no fear! Mitsumi has a cute bento and the willpower to greet anonymous students on Day 1. But it's tough. Makoto is used to being a loner. Mitsumi, for the first time, struggles with being ignored, brushed aside, and sometimes deliberately cut out of conversations or social dynamics. For example, during gym class prep, Mitsumi and two other girls are hanging up some banner or other, but when someone calls for volunteers for another task, the other girls slip away without a thought (Girl 1: "We're gonna go help!"; Girl 2: "Thanks for finishing up!"; Mitsumi: "Huh?"). Mitsumi, a budding socialite and strident conversationalist, for the first time, must learn how to adapt.

Yuzu is in a class where she doesn't know anyone. Mika is in Sousuke's class, and Kenta and Tsukasa are in another class altogether.

Yuzu's case encompasses the middle-third of SKIP AND LOAFER v7, and it's a tear-inducing undertaking that again avails readers to the author's skill in developing vulnerable characters. Everyone thinks Yuzu, pretty and peaceable, attractive and amicable, will have no trouble getting up to speed. The truth is less kind. Her first new friend group lies to her, disregards her emotions, tries to manipulate her into dating some schmuck, and then blames her for the fallout. Yuzu has been here before.

Fortunately, readers are treated to a curious new pairing: Mika and Makoto. For six brief pages, the two girls exchange doubts and insecurities, and come to the immediately realization that Yuzu's façade is a constant cry for help. It's a clever and effective narrative transition; individuals who normally don't interact, directly, somehow share an emotional fault line with the manga's most fragile character. As such, when Makoto goes to Yuzu home to see what's wrong, the two friends swiftly acknowledged that this whole "growing up" business is a lot of harder than they realized.

Yuzu has to learn how to stand on her own, but Makoto has to learn that it's often necessary to step up and lend support when her friends falter.

SKIP AND LOAFER v7 is a good volume for the way it carries its characters into a new chapter, while also, not-so-subtly revealing the next great hurdle or two. Mitsumi is increasingly comfortable with expressing her thanks and affection for Sousuke's kindness. Meanwhile, new characters enter the fray: Ebuchi, a gentle and random classmate; Chieri Yasaka, a girl who is no doubt a schemer and staunch egoist; and Momo Yukawa, a chemistry wizard who kind of likes that some students (like Mitsumi) are more whimsical than they initially appear.
