HAPPY HALLOWEEN 2024!!

Happy Halloween to everyone who’s celebrating! This is my costume- David Guzman with Puppet Ike. Ike was originally played by Brendon Stinson and Jon Hacker, but I decided to do David Guzman’s version because according to friends and family- I look the most like him.

The puppet is hand made, his head is made of aluminum foil and his body is made of foam. I got some pointers from my uncle/cousin (he's my second cousin but I call him my uncle) Ben. I decided to not attempt a mouth for him because this is my very first puppet and from what I know Ike doesn't have any speaking lines (other than singing and a broom solo). I had fun making him!! Besides his hair. I sewed each strand in with an embroidery stitch called the Turkey Rug Stitch and now I don't have any skin on my right thumb. > p.

Anyways!! I tried to get pins from a bunch of stuff David Guzman was in- unfortunately I don't have any more photos of the bag because it's at my moms and I'm currently at my dads. I also embroidered a logo the Guzman's had on their page on the side- but unfortunately I don't have any good photos of that either.

Katherine and Hannah costumes

Plus a little bit of Brooklyn - but only the actresses who have also played Katherine/Hannah.

Bronté Barbé

The main actress for Katherine, I’ve seen her twice. As she’s the main actress, she doesn’t play any other characters.

I love the black stripes on her lapel and around the hem of her skirt.

It’s three different shades of blue - skirt and waistcoat front very similar (and seems to be denim? Or at least a chambray sort of thing), and the much darker blue waistcoat back.

She has four “tabs” topstitched onto her skirt - two thin ones at the front which hide a large pocket on each side (for her notebook/pencil etc), plus two much larger ones on the back.

Unlike the Broadway version, Katherine only has one costume which stays identical except during King of New York where she removes the waistcoat - showing the details of her shirt and her belt (which is completely hidden in her full outfit)

Hair wise, Bronté has soft blonde curls with the very edges barely rolled back. Some photos turn her more strawberry blonde / light ginger but I’m pretty sure she’s “supposed” to be blonde.

Going from hair “down” to hair “up” is one of the most obvious markers of adulthood at this age, and historically happened around age 16 for Katherine’s social standing but that would make Katherine 15 so we’re ignoring that slightly. I’d still say Bronté’s Katherine is at most 16 - she’s the most naive of the three Katherine’s.

Bobbie Chambers

Bobbie’s usual role is Hannah (Pulitzer’s assistant) and she’s alternate/1st understudy for Katherine as well. I’ve seen her play Katherine four times, and Hannah twice, and she is my personal favourite Katherine.

As you can see, her Katherine outfit shares a lot of commonalities with Bronté’s (skirt, waistcoat, shirt and tie combo - with blue bring her primary colour).

But there are also the obvious differences - her skirt is a subtly patterned - a thin windowpane-type check, with larger vertical stripes running through the centre of the boxes - and she has a large kangaroo style pocket on the centre front of her skirt.

Her hair is definitely ginger, slightly curled and pulled back at the edges - slightly more than Bronté but not even close to centre back. She’s more of trouble maker than Bronté I feel, and is probably 16-17.

Hannah

Hannah's costume shares a lot with Katherine - it's the same cut (in a more serious colour), but her hair is "up" now - Hannah is definitely an adult while Katherine still occupies the in between spaces.

Splint

Splint is one of the Brooklyn Newsies, a very different social standing (and judging by the hair - age) to Katherine and Hannah, but there's still the elements of Bobbie's Hannah and Katherine (mostly in the hair colour)

Lindsay Atherton

Lindsay is a swing - she covers both Hannah and Katherine. I've seen her play Hannah three times, but I've only listened to an audio of her Katherine, not actually seen her.

The first thing about Lindsay's Katherine is that her costume isn't blue like Bronte and Bobbie's, but is more sombre coloured - also her hair is far more pulled back than the other two. I'd put her as older than the other two Katherine's - but still only in the 17-18 age range. She's also got the really tight blonde curls (Merida curls as I usually refer to them).

Which when you look at her Hannah:

It's the same dress (skirt/waistcoat - same difference). Trust me I spent way too long looking at seam placement and stripes to double check what anyone with eyes can see.

However - it's not the same outfit - Hannah's shirt has the lace/frills at the cuffs and the collar, while Katherine's is much more functional. Hannah's hair is also pulled "up" to make her a proper grownup - but it's still very clearly the same blonde Merida curls, only tamed by age.

And then there's Mack:

(Lindsay's Brooklyn Newsie character) We've got the hair continuing - Mack's hair looks like you cut Katherine's hair short then didn't take proper care of it (which for a Brooklyn newsie - tracks), plus there's the continuation of the pinstripes in Mack's shirt.

Imogen Bailey

Finally Imogen Bailey - another swing, who covers Hannah but not Katherine (at least as far as I can tell). I've seen her Hannah once.

Which has the Hannah elements from the other two actresses, but also is the only brunette, which carries into her Brooklyn Newsie - Stray.

I just enjoy how the different actresses have the opportunity to make the character their own through costume differences, not just through their acting choices.

It was also a fun experience in person getting to see all the different costumes.

This kinda got away from me.

Anyway - tl:dr - the similarities and differences between the same characters are fun, and nearly as fun as the similarities and differences between the same actress.

why have i never seen anyone talk about how jack’s costume for newsies was changed between broadway and the proshot

It seems the people want my rant, since 100% of you answered yes to the poll— so here goes, and please don’t flame me too bad! I know uksies is beloved but after talking to @jackmkelly I gotta share my opinion

here goes

I really do not like Davey’s costume in uksies. I don’t despise all of it- I like the shape of his sleeves, the proper cut of his pants and the height of his collar, but I especially hate his color palette. Actually I sort of despise his color palette, or lack of one. Uksies colors Jack, Katherine, and Crutchie pretty well, and I’m only saying that because they manage to stand out splendidly against the mass of miserable, bland gray and black and white. In my opinion, they fucked Davey’s color palette up so incredibly hard— like WHY is Davey gray and brown like a background newsie? Why doesn’t he have any color at all?

(Take a moment to admire Ryan’s beauty and perfect Davey portrayal before rejoining me on my soapbox. Does this not look positively gray? It’s so *bland*.)

Okay so either I’m colorblind, or this is just the most boring, nondescript pallete known to man. why, even in act 2, is he still blending in with the background? You’d be hard pressed to spot bro in a group of newsies, which doesn’t make any sense because he’s co-leading a strike at this point.

in livesies (and also in 92sies), we see Davey’s personality journey in his costume. In livesies he adopts Jack’s signature blue, rolls his sleeves up and unbuttons his waistcoat to show that he’s truly grown into his position as leader. In 92sies, Davey’s silhouette also changes to mimic the casualty of Jack’s costume. The color symbolism in the film and in 92sies is really important to me and I think it shows off Dave’s journey as a character very well.

In uksies he just remains so boring and it makes me so angry because it’s literally blatant Davey erasure imho. Why doesn’t he get a smidge of Jack’s red? Or literally any other color? Just a necktie or some suspenders would suffice. Some sort of visible change. Why can’t he roll up his sleeves or unbutton his collar? I’ve seen people saying his color is green (I haven’t seen any physical green on his costume but I could be missing something. @make-friends-with-the-rats sent me a picture that looks fairly green but that disappears under the stage lighting, as you can see in the pics above) but idk. It just rubs me the wrong way that the only change we see is an unbuttoned vest.

Where’s the determination? Where’s the assimilation into the rest of the group? Ryan Kopel’s Davey is anxious, yeah, but he gets angry and frustrated in act 2. He has character growth that is not acknowledged in his costume.

Anyways, rant over. This has bothered me since I watched the bootleg. It’s probably not a big deal in the end but those are my thoughts lol. If you have a potential explanation for this choice pls do lmk

(Uksies lovers please do not flame me too hard, I love Ryan’s portrayal of Davey I just think they did bro dirty with the black and white fit. I have huge gripes with their costuming in general but this is the biggest offense to me. Again— love the production. It made serious strides and it was very well done. But this costume… :( )

Jack Kelly - The Abominable Snowman

Jack is trying to get past the last party he threw. He debated whether or not to even throw this party, because of how the last has ended. But he does, to try to prove he’s fine. He dresses up as the Abominable Snowman, wearing all white, a furry white coat with matching boots and white antlers with icicles hanging from them. He uses makeup to make his skin look frost bitten. He decorated his apartment as a sort of snowy cave and all the cocktails are frosty and blue and full of a lot of alcohol. He ends up actually having fun and David and him end up pulling an all nighter in his bed, doing everything but sleeping.

Year Previous: Santa Claus

David Jacobs - A Christmas Angel

David fears Jack is angry with him and asks Race for help in a costume because he wants to have a serious talk with Jack tonight about having a long term, serious relationship. Race makes him into a Christmas Angel, letting David wear a lot of his own jewelry, all white, with large wings and feathers glued to him. David pulls Jack aside at the party to talk to him, starting to apologize and they just end up making out in the kitchen for most of the night. David invites Jack to Hanukkah with his family. Sarah approves.

Racetrack Higgins - A Slutty Christmas Present

Race is the first person to show up at his brother’s apartment in almost no clothing, much to Jack’s horror. Race is dressed as a Christmas gift for Spot, using mostly Christmas ribbon to conceal himself. He’s only wearing a tight pair of boxers. He’s crafted a crown of gift wrapping bows and uses wrapping paper and ribbon to wrap around his nipples and thighs, as well as his hips and over his boxers to make it look like he’s truly wearing nothing. Jack and him get into a heated argument over Race’s costume choice and Jack tries to force him to wear one of his own old costumes. Race refuses and Spot gives Race his jacket to try to cover him up. Jack is not happy about it.

Year Previous: Cousin Eddie

Spot Conlon - John McClane

True to the last few years, Spot is good old John. It is the only costume he ever wears to this party and he’s not about to change that now. He ends up asking Jack if he can ask Race to marry him.

Crutchie Morris - Tally the Elf

Crutchie is the newest Christmas sensation, Tally. He is a bit anxious to be around everyone because of the tension going on, but is ultimately able to have a good time and is everyone’s favorite bartender this year.

Katherine Plumber - Harry

Katherine goes with Sarah as the Wet Bandits. She is Harry. She and Jack talk and make up and Katherine tells Jack that he needs to accept that he loves David and get over his fear of commitment fast.

Sarah is Marv and she is here to have a good time. She get wildly drunk and then tells Katherine to put a baby in her.
