The Israeli/Hamas War, 2023 (5784, 1445)

The thoughts swirling through my head every time I listen to the news in the morning are filling me with a sense of hopeless grief, and keeping them to myself is getting in the way of thinking about anything else.

So, I'm putting my thoughts and observations here:

News of the attack from Hamas, on 7 October, of 1,400 Israelis killed, and over 200 people kidnapped, sickened and horrified me. This was not an attack on the Israeli military or government; this was a terrorist attack on civilians.

Surely, the Hamas leaders knew that the Israeli government would retaliate -- a government armed with planes and ammunition supplied by the biggest Military Industrial complex in the world.

And surely, the Hamas leaders knew that Palestinian civilians would be caught in the crossfire. What were they thinking?!

Perhaps they were thinking that if there were innocent Israeli citizens in their tunnels, the Israeli military would care enough about their safety not to use the American planes and bombs.

This turned out not to be the case.

I've also noticed that, despite the fact that it would benefit the Israeli government's political position to make sure the world knows about any rise in the numbers of Israeli casualties (to prove that Hamas is still an imminent threat), the number of reported Israeli dead remains at 1,400. And (as of 4 November) the number of reported Palestinian dead has risen to 9,000.

The Israeli government warned citizens of Gaza to move to the southern half of the Gaza Strip, for the sake of their own safety. And then, they started bombing in the south.

Antisemitism has, horrifically, been a factor in global politics since the time of the ancient Romans. And, as a goy, who's never had to worry about the threat of antisemitic violence, I cannot say that a homeland, such as Israel, does not need to exist. But I've also never been able to understand how a religious ethnostate, such as Israel, ever being a true democracy (I really started to think about this seriously when I went to college, and met fellow students from Israel and other nations in the Middle East, who were studying abroad).
