Timeline Implications

I'm a timeline nerd, so one of the first things I tend to become intrigued by is when hard dates are introduced into a series.

In AvA11, we get a ton of new ones (for Victim), but there's one that stuck out to me as...confusing.

2011?

2007 to 20...11?

Now, this might not seem so strange at first glance, if it wasn't for the event that is about to happen:

Dark and Chosen's attack on Newgrounds.

Why is this weird?

Because Dark and Chosen only escape Alan's pc on October 2, 2011.

And the Flashback shows them attacking three other things before they attack Newgrounds.

It's always been the assumption of the fandom that these attacks happened over the ~7 year interim between AvA3 and AvA Season 2 (which all happens on August 18, 2018.) IE: these four attacks were spread out over years.

But this isn't what AvA11 is saying.

It is saying that the Newgrounds attack (and probably all of them if they were in chronological order, but specifically Newgrounds) happened somewhere between October 2 and December 31st 2011.

A timespan of 2 months and 29 days, MAX.

It's strange, isn't it?

The Flashback had been the setup for why Chosen had a change of heart, as well as showing Dark just going off the fucking rails into becoming a murderous psychopath. It's weird that those two things would happen so quickly.

And leave literally YEARS worth of time they spent together a complete mystery. What in the hell were they doing, between 2012 and 2018, if they've already had their Establishing Character Events???

They were together that entire time. They're living together. Are there more attacks The Flashback just didn't show?

Or was the Flashback not entirely what we thought it was...?

There is a clear disconnect, between the Newgrounds scene in the Flashback, and the Newgrounds scene in AvA11:

Not once is Chosen shown doing what he, supposedly, did in the Flashback. Meaning the events of the Flashback might not be entirely accurate to what actually happened, but more like Chosen's FEELINGS towards them. Or perhaps what HE interprets his own actions to have been like, a perspective that isn't accurate to how things looked from the outside.

The Flashback is, ultimately, showing Chosen's own recollected memories, memories that could be tainted and flawed by his own emotions and regrets at the time we're seeing them.

Chosen could be an unreliable narrator, of sorts.

Could this imply that the Newgrounds attack isn't actually the final straw for Chosen's own character change that we thought it was? Was it just a large enough event that affected him, opened his eyes to Dark's nature, that it was one of the ones he was remembering on the way back to the Outernet?

None of this really helps to explain anything about the timeline.

It doesn't make sense, for the Newgrounds attack to happen at the end of 2011, with Dark doing virtually NOTHING until 2018. Not for his character, which is shown reveling in destruction, who enjoyed attacking websites. He likes to destroy shit and cause chaos for the hell of it. He's an evil little bastard. He wouldn't just sit around twiddling his thumbs for 6 and a half years, no matter how nicely Chosen asked him to, and it did NOT take him that long to make the Virabots either.

[And that's something that's grinded my gears for years, why did Dark target Alan again after so many years??? Him sending the virabot to his PC just seems so out of the blue.]

There has to be more we haven't seen. There are far too many unanswered questions, about BOTH OF THEM, between the Newgrounds attack and the creation of the Virabot.

Was the Newgrounds attack instead the BEGINNING of Chosen's change of heart, not the end of it?

Or...

Was there more than one Newgrounds attack?

Did Chosen and Dark target certain popular websites, repeatedly?

That absolutely sounds like something Dark would do. It sounds like something Dark would ENJOY doing.

I don't know. There's so many unanswered questions with Dark and Chosen, it's hard to put the peices together. Especially now, when so many things keep tying back to Chosen and Dark's past. Mostly Dark. Because he's the bastard who keeps starting shit that somehow ends up getting Chosen into trouble.

Did they even go to the Outernet after they escaped? Or did they just jump right into destroying stuff?

They were clearly very satisfied with themselves after destroying Alan's PC, so why would they stop there?

Why wouldn't they ride the internet webstrings to Yahoo and blow it to smithereens? (Also Alan are you okay, you've targeted Yahoo like three times now, what did it do to hurt you?) Why not go destroy Angry Birds? Why not attack StickPage?

Why not Newgrounds, a website that Chosen must have known was a favorite of Alan's, considering he was used as a popup blocker for Alan's INTERNET BROWSER.

They could have absolutely just went on a rampage immediately after escaping. Four massive things attacked and nearly completely destroyed, in a single afternoon. Not even a single day, it was already 3:39 pm when they destroyed Alan's PC.

That's why I think 2011 was chosen in the episode, and not a much more reasonable 2012 or beyond. No significant event happened in 2012, and the date was clearly meant to induce a foreboding feeling into the viewers who KNOW the timeline. 2011 is significant to Dark and Chosen's part of the timeline. There was no other date they could have used, not until the entirety of Season 2 itself.

AvA11 has filled a TON of holes in Victim's story and in the lore as a whole, but it's also left us with a TON more questions about Chosen and Dark's histories, and their place in the overarching narrative.

Hopefully, one day we'll get some answers to these questions just like we did for Victim.

And maybe Chosen can get some fucking character development, like holy shit, literally every other hollow head's got hobbies and interests but my boi doesn't. Get him some personality, please.

BF (Keith Muse -> Four Muse) (They/Them) The Way-too-lucky-for-his-own-good street rat rapper that takes on GF's Ex souls in his place.

and GF (Gabby Dearest -> Gabriel Muse) (He/Him) The Dearest's only child who runs away, starts out really self conscious and scared, grows into his own person overtime.

Garcello (2ed Ex) The second guy GF ever dated, had to leave after DD gave him a cursed cigarette pack that killed him eventually. His unfinished business was not getting to spend enough time with Annie.

Tabi (3rd Ex) The third guy GF ever dated, died in a raging fit of revenge after thinking GF was the one who asked her dad to curse him. His unfinished business is his raging anger management problems.

Senpai (1st Ex) The first guy GF ever dated, romantic sweethearts since highschool. Killed directly by DD. His unfinished business is that he never learned to live his life without needing someone else.

GF's Family!!!

Daddy Dearest The most toxically overbearing parent you'll ever meet, a murderer in every respect. The antagonist.

Mommy Dearest Really needs to divorce her husband. Genuinely a caring mother- too scared of DD to help GF when in the house.

The Newground's Family!!!

Pico (He/They) BF's highschool Ex, still cares very deeply for BF though he'll never outright admit it- starts hunting BF and GF down after DD convinces him that BF is being controlled by GF's Exs.

John Captain (Tankman) Pico's retired veteran Dad. Now drives a bus around town for a job. Almost stops BF and GF from leaving the city when DD holds his husband hostage.

Steve Captain Pico's OTHER retired veteran Dad. Much more retired than John- literally stay at home Dad. Lost his arm when DD held him hostage.

The Spooks!!!

Skid and Pump The little kids GF would babysit from time to time- actually able to see the spirits tied to BF. Offer's to let them stay in Skid's house for the night.

Lila Skid's mom, not able to see the spirits- but happy to let GF stay after hearing about the situation with DD.

Lemon Skid's step dad, able to see the spirits- unable to resist the urge to devour BF because of it- chases them and GF out of the house before morning comes.

BF's Family!!!

OB BF's Oldest Brother, lives outside the city limits on a farm to send money back for BB and BF to live in a decent apartment. BF and GF are running to get outside the city to live with him.

BB BF's Big Brother, lives in an apartment with BF in the city. Wasn't a Demon originally- but became one after DD revived him WAY to roughly- causing permanent injury to his body and soul. Can see the spirits in BF- but isn't told about them till they're out of the city because BF was afraid of giving him a heart attack.

Armaros BB's personal caretaker. Was an angel sent to fix the issue with the city itself- fell from grace for the sin of pride after a misunderstanding caused him to falsely target GF and kill BB on accident. Now lives with BB as a form of apology and helps take care of him.

ava has an issue with characters' driving forces

this post does have spoilers for the new episode, so i'll put this all under a "read more"

disclaimer goes away after a week, i will edit this post so be warned

there's a trend i've noticed when it comes to the main antagonists of ava and avm. theres a common theme amongst all of the villains (i'm counting second and chosen, since they are technically antagonists per ava season 1). let's explore this.

case 1: king orange

it's obvious that the thing motivating king to take over the bastion and get the minecraft icon is the fact that he lost his kid, and to an extent the kid's other guardian (wife, husband, s/o, pick your favorite); he creates a literal black hole in order to see his kid again because of an incident he couldn't control. not to mention king orange also lost purple's trust, and their support as a whole, which further emphasizes the loss of his son given that purple was a second chance, and he messed it up by losing sight of their relationship. this is something that king orange couldn't willingly control.

case 2: purple

purple experiences two kinds of loss: death and abandonment. obviously lapis (regular blue) abandons the family because they didn't approve of orchid (pink) coddling their child, something that purple couldn't control. then purple has to live with the fact that their only other parent is dying to some unforeseen reason, likely illness, and that too is something that they couldn't control.

case 3: second

second is more interesting, because it's something that gets glossed over. they're the antagonist in ava 4 up until the very end, and why does second do the things they do? because they lost their friends to something (someone; alan) they couldn't control and this is repeated in showdown; second watches dark kill their friends because of dark's own spite and hatred, which i will cover next. that is something second cannot control

case 4: dark

i think dark is a really good example of this trend; they were made to attack chosen and lost control, ultimately losing and teaming up with chosen to work against alan. then they convinced chosen to go on a conquest to essentially take over the world, which ends in dark losing chosen's trust and support as a friend due to beliefs that dark couldn't control (chosen's own morals)

case 5: chosen

compared to everyone else, chosen experiences loss and the inability to maintain control in different ways. they fought back against alan and, as punishment, was forced to be alan's pop-up window destroyer against their own will, and they can't control it then he does, freeing himself, prompting dark's creation, and eventually befriending dark and teaming up with them to destroy the world. they grew distant, not sharing the same beliefs and reasoning as dark anymore, and directly opposed dark during the virabot sequence. this all leads to chosen and dark fighting during the showdown, which is when chosen ultimately watches second kill their former friend and can't control that

case 6: victim

the whole reason why this post was made is because of victim's whole deal with mitsi. they endured abuse, lost the upperhand in that initial fight with alan, took matters into their own hands and fled the computer then met mitsi, fell in love, started a company together, and they lost her in a situation that they couldn't control, that being chosen and dark destroying newgrounds

if you couldn't notice already, there is something that happens between every single antagonist, and that's the fact that every antagonist has lost something due to circumstances they can't control

obviously the circumstances are different. majority of these antagonists have experienced loss through death, while a handful also experienced loss through losing control, losing free will, so on so forth

"why is this an issue?"

put it this way: every single antagonist is being driven by the same exact thing, just in different fonts

every single major antagonist, in some way, shape, or form, loses something. as a result they are driven to get whatever they lost back, whether it's a loved one or the love of someone that is now gone (or in dark's case, trust).

i personally believe that there was a lot of missed potential within the antagonists, as i'm sure some people think, and i think it's because instead of having characters do things out of spite or out of sheer evil, it's in an attempt to get something back.

the reason i'm saying main antagonists and not villains is because in the case of youtube from animation vs youtube, the corrupt video green in the influencer arc, the pokemon universe in animation vs pokemon, and even the entire animation vs education series, the antagonists aren't going against second and the color gang because they lost someone dear to them or they lost the affection of those around them

case in point: corrupt video green. they were never loved to begin with, and that is what causes them to lash out at the color gang and fight them. everyone turned their back on them because they were imperfect, because they loved other creations more than them

also case in point: animation vs math. euler's identity only combatted second because second was technically the one that invaded their space. they're not trying to bring anyone back to life like king orange was, they were just protecting their territory

my thoughts are a little incoherent right now but i have a point, that being that the antagonists should have another reason to do the things they do that isn't just "oh my wife/son/friend/dad and mom died"

So I just finished playing Shadow Generations, and when I checked out the returning songs from past Sonic games, I couldn’t help but notice that there’s a song missing, “Almost Dead” by Powerman 5000.

Now, it’s not the first time this has happened. The OST for Shadow’s game from 2005 doesn’t have this as well even though the game itself does. Why could that be? Well there’s two possible theories. Now I’m just spitting these out since I don’t spend all my time in the Sonic fandom, so if there is a reason, you can say so.

Theory 1. It probably got removed for a similar reason “Who I Am” by Magna-Fi didn’t make it to the game. Yes, I’ve heard of that song. Although I kinda forgot the reason why that song wasn’t included. Theory 2. The band bought the rights to the song and SEGA doesn’t have permission to use the song again. But that probably isn’t right, overwise the band would’ve released it on one of their albums.

But here’s something to note, this isn’t the only song by Powerman 5000 that’s impossible to find now. The band has a cover of “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and that cover is also a very rare song to find, rare enough to not be available on music sites like iTunes or Spotify. The cover was originally featured in the film Zoolander, and the cover does have an official music video that stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as their characters from Zoolander. It’s too bad the band doesn’t have something like a compilation album with all their hits and rarities. I like their music, and I want to listen to their rarer songs.

Getting back to Shadow, while I do think it’s great that this new Sonic game is giving Shadow another chance, it’s too bad that not all the songs are returning. But it’s not just “Almost Dead”. Let me just say that I’ve yet to play the main game Sonic Generations, but I couldn’t help but notice that while the game’s soundtrack brings back all the theme songs from past games, notably missing from the soundtrack is “Endless Possibilities” the theme song from Sonic Unleashed. The song is sung by the lead singer from Bowling for Soup, and the song was included in the original Sonic Generations game from 2011. So why did this song not return? The same reason “Almost Dead” didn’t return? No way would Bowling for Soup buy the rights to the song.

The truth is, “Almost Dead” was one of my favorite songs from Shadow’s game, and my GameCube died so I have no way of ever playing it again. YouTube is the only place to listen to this song, but it’s too bad the song isn’t on music sites like Spotify. But I’m sure that there are lots of other rare songs by modern rock bands that are impossible to find on these sites. “With My Mind” by Cold was the theme song for some game from 20 years ago (I apologize for not remembering the name) and that song is also impossible to find, not even on Spotify, and yet it has an official music video with scenes from the game. The reason I like this song is because I remember a flash video on Newgrounds from 2008 that had this song, but of course, flash is dead and I don’t visit Newgrounds at all.

Anyways, this is all I wanted to share. I just find it unfortunate when it comes to liking a song that’s impossible to listen to in my music library.

maybe a loaded question, but do you think when the writers were working on Loo Loo Land that Viv & Brandon thought what Stolas was doing was sexual harassment and Viv is just trying hard to retcon it as 'Stolas coming on too strong' now she's decided he's her favorite?

or was it really just a joke to them even at the time?

if the latter, it's kind of sad to think neither Viv (who created Blitzo to be the main character) nor Brandon (who did a lot to define him) ever cared that Blitzo was being mistreated by Stolas

I thought we were starting to culturally get over the notion that sexual assault done to men is funny because it's emasculating or some garbage like that, but HB and HH feel like they're from the 2000s, not the 2020s

My thoughts exactly. It's exactly like something lifted straight out of an early 2000s Newground video, back when the only thing funnier than a joke about a man being raped was the r-slur.
