With the end of Ramadan rapidly approaching, I'd like to give attention to another Muslim doll line. Though unlike the others, this one is far less obscure...
You know them, you love them, give it up for the Arabian Friends!!!
While Fulla is objectively more popular than Arabian Friends (having a longer span of releases and merchandise), I'd definitely say Arabian Friends are more talked about in western doll collecting circles. This is likely because while all the other Muslim doll lines I've found use Barbie proportions, these moreso resemble Winx or W.I.T.C.H.
Arabian Friends were released by Newboy, the company behind Fulla, in 2007. They were first teased in issues 08 and 10 of Fulla Magazine, before being officially revealed in issues 11 and 14 (the latter seen above).
Only 8 dolls in total have been released for the line: a Deluxe and a Budget doll for each of the four characters. The Deluxe sets came with two outfits, accessories, and an Abaya. The Budget sets came with one outfit and a matching Hijab. Each doll had 7 points of articulation, with bend-and-snap knees.
A third line was announced in 2008 in Fulla Magazine issue 19, advertising that whoever could answer which character had which profession would enter a raffle with the chance to receive a full Arabian Friends collection, but this ultimately never came to pass. (The answers were: Muna - Fashion Designer, Amal - Kids' Teacher, Dunya - Coach, and Ahlam - Air Hostess)
It's said on Dollect there might have been an accompanying animated series, but the most I was able to find were two videos. One seems to be a trailer for the animated series.
youtube
The other includes a Back To School merchandise advertisement, and what might be an animation where the girls reminisce on when they were younger and how their aspirations led to their respective careers (the trailer seems to re-use animation from both of these).
youtube
A comment beneath the Trailer claims these were actually meant to advertise for an upcoming movie rather than a series, but no further news came out after these videos were released. If this is true it's honestly a shame, and might have been cancelled around when the third series was intended to release. The animation provided reminds me of Sailor Moon, and I would've loved to see it in a full storyline!
First character up is Amal, whose name means "Hope"! Her description reads:
"Never forget that hope is the key that opens all closed doors. With hope in your heart you will never be alone and nothing in life will seem impossible.."
Amal reminds me the most of Usagi from Sailor Moon, as the animation seems to portray her personality as being kind yet clumsy. It's ironic that she eventually becomes a schoolteacher as well, considering she apparently had a habit of arriving to classes late. She's also seen tucking a child into bed, so perhaps she's a mother, older sister, or aunt as well?
While depicted in the animation as having honey blonde hair, her doll has dirty blonde hair in two low pigtails (possibly tied by pink ribbon or thread). And ironically, despite her Deluxe doll using more patterns than her friends, her Budget doll is the only one without a patterned shirt.
Next is Muna, whose name means "Wish". Her description reads:
"Wishes are like bright stars in a dark sky although they are only small they fill our lives with happiness and make the darkness beautiful."
Muna is a Fashion Designer with an eye for intricate design and detail. She spends a good amount of time in her studio, seen drawing on her friend's leg cast and her highschool classroom's chalkboard. At one point, Muna is also seen helping an elderly woman across the street, so clearly her devotion to her work doesn't stop her from being charitable when she can be!
Her fashion style in both doll and animated form definitely seems the most bold out of her friends, reminding me of when 2000s-era fashion would draw inspiration from the 70s! While in the animation she and Dunya were depicted with tanned olive skin, their dolls have the same skintone as Amal and Ahlam. She has brown hair with red highlights. In the animation her hair was often depicted with side part bangs and a headband. However, her Deluxe doll has a red beanie, and her Budget doll has a middle part with braids coming down on either side of her head.
Ahlam's name means "Dreams". Her description reads:
"Dreams are like beautiful butterflies that fly in the wide blue sky. It is good to have dreams because they take you to a place where anything is possible.."
Ahlam is apparently a pianist in addition to her Air Hostess job, having dreamt of flying since she was in school. She seems to be portrayed as considerate and low-key, which aligns with her cool blue color scheme!
Her doll's fashion style seems to be Boho Chic, with beads, frills, and florals. In the animation her hair is short, with a side part and a blue butterfly barrette. Her doll, meanwhile, wears her black and blue hair beneath a navy cap in her Deluxe look, and a middle part tied back in her Budget look. Visually, she reminds me of Ami Mizuno!
And last but not least, Dunya! Her name means "Life", and her description reads:
"Your friendship is like a beautiful flower to me. Your nice words, kind deeds and positive attitude are sure to be rewarded with happiness and love.."
Dunya seems to be a healthy eater, going to someone's house with a bowl of greens (salad or kale perhaps?), and making a smoothie while on the phone. She also does stretches and runs on her treadmill. All of this makes her the perfect fit for a coaching position!
Weirdly enough, her hairstyle in the animation is exactly like Amal's doll, with two low pigtails tied by pink ribbon. Her doll, meanwhile, has brown hair in a side part tied in a high pony with silver elastics (giving me Vidia vibes tbh). Her olive green fashion seems to be relatively modern (at least for the 2000s) and urban. Her clothes are the ones I can most easily see on a Bratz doll!
Overall, I simply adore this line!!! It feels more character-focused than other ones I've covered, and I'm a sucker for such strong color-blocking! It's hard for me to even pick a favorite, since their centralized aesthetics are all so compelling and unique! If anyone who knows Arabic would be able to translate what they say in the animations, I'll happily add an addendum to this post for clarification!
It's a shame the line and its movie was cancelled before it could receive the acclaim it deserved, I would've loved to see what more it had to offer! Regardless, I'm thoroughly impressed with what they managed to put out, and hope the designers have been able to apply their clear talents in other endeavors!
Ramadan Kareem!

Adventures of Superman #513 (June 1994)
"THE BATTLE FOR METROPOLIS," Part 4! The Death of Project Cadmus! (Well, "death" in comic book terms.) After the events of last issue, in which a bunch of Cadmus-brand rockets exploded all around Metropolis, a royally pissed-off Superman heads to the formerly top secret government installation to register his displeasure with Director Westfield... only to find out that someone beat him to it, because Westfield has been murdered.
Since Cadmus' top dorks don't have much experience shouting orders at soldiers (the guy in charge of that just died), Superman steps in to fill that role while they try to figure out who killed Westfield and where his ear went.
Given that Cadmus' other, nerdier directors have spent days in a probably very stinky lab trying to come up with a cure for the Clone Plague ravaging Metropolis (and a small part of Hawaii), the main suspect for Westfield's murder is Dr. Carl Packard, a nervous little guy who tends to disappear for days. Also, he was just found wandering the hallways muttering about someone who "deserves death," so that doesn't look too good for him. Before Packard can explain himself (he was talking about his other evil boss, Lex Luthor), the whole murder mystery matter is shuffled aside when the nerds actually find the key to curing the Plague: the blood of one of the few clones who didn't get sick, the Guardian! Hope he's got a lot of it.
As it turns out, they need Packard to create that Guardian-fueled cure, so everyone agrees to forget about the fact that he's probably a murderer for a while. As soon as they let Packard near a computer, however, he uses the secret program in all LexCorp PCs that notifies Lex if someone types his name (yes, Lex was the original "searches himself on Twitter all day" billionaire) to send him a message telling him about the cure. Instead of letting Packard cook and then stealing the cure, the Plague-stricken and increasingly insane Lex orders his Lex-Men to invade Cadmus and kidnap the Guardian. To be fair, he does look like he's about 15 seconds away from shriveling up into a prune, so I get the urgency.
So, Superman and the few Cadmus soldiers in there (most are out fighting angry clones in Metropolis) have to defend the facility from an army of flying armored goons while the nerds try to work on the cure. Lex uses a hologram of himself when he still had hair to try to convince Superman that he should let Superboy, the Newboy Legion kids, and all those sewer clones die so that Lex himself can live ("Would you let Einstein die to save the Bowery Boys?"), but somehow he isn't dissuaded. Not only that, but Superman even calls Lex "contemptible"... and, uh, everyone else who uses a wig.
Lex must have really hated that crack about his baldness, because the next thing he does is order the Lex-Men to blow up Cadmus' reactor and kill everyone inside. If he can't have the cure, no one can. Superman looks a bit overwhelmed with the soon-to-explode reactor and the Lex-Men trying to stop him from containing it (so much so that he calls them "idiots," about the strongest insult you'll hear from this Superman), but then someone stops by to help him: patient zero of the Clone Plague cure...
...Superboy! Who could barely stand up the last time we saw him and is now flying and punching goons, so looks like that cure is working. Superman tells the Kid to take those goons outside while he tries to prevent the reactor from exploding, but as soon as Superboy makes it out, there's a huge explosion and the mountain surrounding Cadmus collapses. Superboy wants to start digging up the survivors, but Superman tells him not to bother: everyone is dead. And he'll make Luthor pay for this and all his other sins, once and for all... next week, in Action Comics #700!
TO BE CONCLUDED, obviously.
Plotline-Watch:
That's it for Project Cadmus, and everyone who worked in it, which will never appear ag-- ok, no one actually believes that. We'll see how they saved themselves and why Superman is pretending they died next issue. Note, however, that Superboy isn't pretending to believe that some of his best friends are buried under a mountain, so his chipperness in that final panel is disturbing.
As you've probably guessed if you've been paying attention, the one who stole Westfield's ear was the same maniac who killed him, disgraced geneticist Dabney Donovan. I don't remember if Dabney ever used Westfield's ear in one of his experiments, but even if he didn't, at least he got to use it for a couple of corny jokes.
Poor Dr. Happersen... he's trying to tell his boss he loves him and would never betray him, and Lex cuts him off and yells at him. Plus, in the same page Lex made it clear that he still isn't totally convinced Happersen isn't Lois Lane's informant, even thought it obviously isn't him. It's hard not to read that exchange with Smithers' and Mr. Burns' voices.
There's a nice little moment with the Guardian, originally a Captain America self-ripoff by Cap creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, saying he's okay with dying to make the cure because he's lived a very long life. Lines like that work better when it's a character who's actually been around since the '40s. I wouldn't have minded if he had died during this storyline -- they could always make another clone later on (and seeing him struggle to live up to his own legacy might have been interesting).
Patreon-Watch:
The latest Patreon-only post was about an Elseworlds story where Superman turns into a cursed spirit haunting a villain, one where he turns the X-Men into the JLA, and (briefly) one where Bizarro teams up with every other DC villain whose name ends in "O." Join Aaron, Chris “Ace” Hendrix, britneyspearsatemyshorts, Patrick D. Ryall, Bheki Latha, Mark Syp, Ryan Bush, Raphael Fischer, Kit, Sam, Bol, and Gaetano Barreca at the Superman '86 to '99 Patreon!
And now, more from Don Sparrow (whose newsletter you should be subscribed to, by the way)...
Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):
We start with the cover, and it’s a pretty good one, with co-star Guardian in well-drawn technological peril, and I never tire of blasts bouncing off Superman.
Inside the book we are greeted with a poster (or at least sticker) worthy image of an on-edge Superman flying at the viewer, his Tarzan-like mane flowing in the wind.
Kitson’s art at this time is a bit strange to me—it might be the inker, or more likely it’s the era—the early 90s demanded everything be a bit more exxxxxxtreme and Jim-Lee-like in its rendering, but it mostly seems at odds with Kitson’s naturalistic drawing style. So you get weird in-between drawings, like on page 2 where Superman is yelling, but his mouth appears to barely be open (as opposed to page 5, when Dr. Packard shouts in surprise, and his mouth appears to be fully extended).
A page later Superman’s surprise (and perhaps grief?) at Westfield’s death is captured well.
On page 4, the fun really begins, as Kitson seems to really have a ball drawing the insane and Dr. Robotnik-like Dabney Donovan, and his comedic use of a stolen body part.
A small thing, but worth mentioning: Kitson and McCarthy absolutely kill it when it comes to reflective surfaces. Throughout the issue, the shiny glasses are on point. Great stuff there, particularly with the two-tone colouring of a Lex-Men soldier on page 16.
On page 10 we get our latest look at Lex Luthor, and it ain’t pretty. The little lines on his flesh make it seem so fragile and sickly.
The full page splash of Cadmus mountain imploding seems like a bit of a missed opportunity, as Superboy isn’t really facing the “camera” and the destruction is mostly dust. Finally, on page 21, the drawing of Superman’s righteous anger at Lex wreaking death and destruction is a great one.
In contrast to Superman #90, where I felt not a lot happened, this issue is chock full of activity, with a race against the clock to find a cure for the clone sickness, Lex-Men invaders, and a core meltdown, plus a little pop-in with Dabney AND a Superboy cameo—it’s a big one, and a nice hors d’oeuvres for the very BIG number coming next week.
SPEEDING BULLETS:
I think Dr. Packard should be played by Micro Machines Motormouth, John Moschitta Jr. It would certainly make his scientific explanations a lot funnier to imagine them being said at lightspeed.
Superboy makes a reference to a Nancy Kerrigan commercial, which was probably this one for Campbell’s Chicken noodle, where the otherwise waify and demure Ms. Kerrigan bodychecks a hockey player (the Campbell’s slogan, at the time, was “Never Underestimate the Power of Soup”, which is the line that gets cut off as Superboy speaks). [Max: Fun fact, in the Spanish version I read in the '90s, Superboy just says "I learned this from a TV ad." Guess they didn't have space for a footnote explaining who Nancy Kerrigan was...]
GODWATCH: Interesting that Big Words seems to be a believer, as Guardian bravely takes the experimental treatment, the man of science prays that Jim Harper has a “personal guardian”.
This is a pretty testosterone-driven issue—I can’t remember off-hand another issue that had not a single female appear in the story. [Max: There IS a female Cadmus trooper in page 1, but she doesn't speak, unless she's supposed to be yelling "SSSSHHOOOOOOM!" as Superman flies by... which I'd totally do.]

Batgirl #1 (Oct 2009) – Steph starting college
Batgirl #7 (Apr 2010) - Damian is "what happens when you work with a 10-year-old."
Red Robin #12 (July 2010) – Tim spent “a few months” looking for evidence before returning to Gotham, becomes emancipated minor
Detective Comics #871 (Jan 2011)– Mention that Dick and Babs went to prom together
Red Robin #25 (Sept 2011) – Tim “and you are only 17”
The Batman Files (Oct 2014) – Jason was 15 at death (seen on death certificate)
?? Rebirth Young Justice series – Cassie: “didn’t mean to end up back in high school feeling - - like I did back when I went to high school.” Later, she says she’s in Metropolis “Working. Going to school in the fall.” So she’s probably starting college.
?? Bart in some Rebirth comic: “Am I six? Am I nineteen? That’s a really freaky thing, right?”
?? At some point: Donna says shes a little older than Kyle
#gecko's lists#dc comics#teen titans#young justice#about 3/4 of these can be compiled into something that makes sence#*sense#but choosing which 3/4 is tricky

Here’s a theory about Jack Kelly’s name:
We know he wasn’t a real newsie, right? Okay, continue.
Jack- Jack Sullivan was the leader of the first group of boys to declare strike in 1899.
More about him:
The “Sullivan” part of his name could also be used in “Francis Sullivan”, Jack Kelly’s birth name.

Fun Times #2
*Atlas, Red Queen Theatre*
If someone were to tell Whitley right now that he was acting very anxious, he would tell them that would be the understatement of the year. Whitley was waiting outside the entrance to the Red Queen, one of the most high class theatre in Atlas. How did he get reservations for a movie picture for ‘Hunter’s Cabin part 2’ on the night of its premiere one might ask? Well the easy answer was he received a monthly allowance of about 2.5 thousand lien and had a large number of connections to high class places due to his family’s name. The harder explanation was how he had to literally open a new bank account, one without his father’s knowledge and under his name rather so that Father wouldn’t be able to track it. Was it backhanded? Yes. Did he have regrets? Not particularly. Would he do it again? If it was the only way to meet Sun_Dragon without his family’s notice, then yes he would.
Which brings him here tonight, he’ll be meeting Sun_Dragon in person for the first time so yes he felt had good reason to be anxious. Why? Well while he knows his family is very influential in Atlas there comes a drawback to such influence. That would be social media. If he were to come dressed as Whitley Schnee, then the paparazzi would come in as a snowstorm and most likely scare her off. He wanted this night to happen as natural as possible. So that’s why he came prepared in his disguise; a dark blue herringbone newboy cap, a gray tweed knee length trench coat, a blue/silver/gray scarf, leather gloves for hands, and a pair of nonprescription glasses. This way he will stand out but not too much to get recognized as a heir to multi-billion lien company. He just hopes that she will be here soon, but at the same time does not wish to rush her arrival as he tries to formulate a greeting to her when she does come.
Yang: White Knight?
Whitley quickly turns toward the source of his voice and turned to see the person he was waiting for and....she was much more beautiful in person than a picture could ever hope to convey. Sun_Dragon was adorned tonight with her huntress outfit that she wore in most pictures he saw her in. He supposed when one made a career in fighting literal monsters of darkness, one always had to be ready. It honestly didn’t bother him at all though, she looked great in it.
Whitley:(Smiles) Sun_Dragon, I’m glad to finally meet you face to face.
Yang: Could say the same, like the hat!
Whitley: Oh thank you! You look good yourself....
Yang: ....Well I guess we should get going to see the movie right?
Whitley: Oh! Yes, you’re right. We should do that! Shall we. (Offers right arm)
Yang: Pfff, sure whatever you say Knight.
With that both of the online friends make their way inside. Both haven’t not stopped smiling yet.
*Mantle, Blum Cinema*
The group consisting of RNJRP having made their way to the local theatre, wait in line to buy tickets for the premiere of “Kill Softly part 4” featuring Spruce Fillis. Both Ruby and Jaune were fans of the first trilogy and had been anticipating the release of the fourth installment of the movie. Ren and Nora have also have seen the first three movies and while Ren thought they were ok, Nora absolutely loved the action of the films. So while they all waited they helped fill in the gaps to Oscar who had not seen any of the movies at this point.
Oscar: So pretty much all the movies starring Spruce Willis are about his character stopping terrorist plots in multiple places.
Ren: That would be the quick summary, yes.
Nora: And he blows stuff up! Don’t forget that part!
Once getting to the head of the line, all five friends walk up to the ticketing booth to pay for their entry. Once there they met a familiar face..... to one of them at least.
Jaune: Mrs. Lars?!
Mrs. Lars/Casserole Mom: Jaune? Oh my gods what are you doing here?!
Jaune: Well we were gonna see a movie here, I didn’t know you worked here.
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!!!’
Mrs. Lars: Actually I work here as a part time manager over the weekend. But it’s so funny seeing you outside of Ginger’s school. What movie are you all watching tonight?
Jaune: Well we are coming to see ‘Kill Softly part 4’, four adults and one minor.
Ren: Um Jaune. (Gestures towards Ruby and points at a sign on the glass panel)
G: All children are welcome.
PG: Children may need to bring a parent.
PG-13: No children under the age of 13 without a Parent/Guardian.
R: No children under the age of 18 without Parent/Guardian.
NC-18: No children under the age of 18. Adults only.
Jaune:(Sheepish) Uuuhhhh. Actually can you switch those tickets for three adults and two minors please.
Ruby: Huh?! (Looks at sign, smushing her face on glass) Oh come on! They have this stupid thing here too! I’m a licensed huntress and still can’t do anything! (Puffs her cheeks irritably)
Oscar: It’s not all that bad being a minor, tickets cost less. (Smiles)
Ruby: But it’s so humiliating! I worked hard to build my mature image, and I still can’t be considered a adult. (Crosses arms and pouts)
Jaune:(Pats her head while giving Mrs. Lars the lien for tickets) If it’s any consolation, I still think you’re a adult.
Ruby:(Eyes go wide and blushes lightly) Helps a little...
Mrs. Lars: Alright, here are your tickets Jaune.
Jaune: Thanks.......Wait, these are premium seats. I didn’t pay for these.
Mrs. Lars: You didn’t need to. Consider this another gift of mine that isn’t just another casserole.~ (Giggles while winking)
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘OK NOW YOU’RE NOT EVEN TRYING TO HIDE THE FLIRTING!’
Jaune: Oh! Well thanks I really appreciate it then, hope the rest of your shift goes good.
Mrs. Lars: Anytime.~
Ruby:(Grumbles)
With that all five of them move to the door and enter the cinema. Once inside they show the tickets to the a man on the podium and he promptly points the way to their marked screen room.
Jaune: So does anyone want to get any refreshments or snacks before the movie starts.
Nora: Ooo~ Movie food! I’ll have a extra large popcorn, a blue Freezi, a salted pretzel with honey mustard-
Jaune: Ok so one ‘Nora special’, got it!
Nora: Thank you fearless leader!~
Jaune: Anything you want Ren?
Ren: I’ll have some iced tea if they have.
Jaune: Got it! Anything for you Oscar.
Oscar: Mmm, I think I’ll have some Red Whips and a Dunk a Cola.
Jaune: Sure thing buddy. What about you Rubes, anything you want?
Ruby:(Whispers) A cane to beat the hussies.
Jaune: What’s that Rubes, couldn’t hear you.
Ruby:(Smilies) Oh nothing just thinking! Mmmmm. I’ll have hotdog with ketchup, a medium popcorn, and a red Freezi.
Jaune: Gotcha, well if you guys want to grab the seats I’ll get the snacks!
Oscar: Isn’t that a lot stuff to carry on your own?
Jaune: It’s alright, I’m kinda used to carrying a lot of stuff with me growing up with-
Ruby/Ren/Nora: ‘Growing up with seven sisters.’
Jaune: See now you’re getting it!
Oscar: Still, one of us should stay to help.
Ruby: I can stay! Yang usually gets me to grab the goods back when we were little so I don’t mind.
Jaune: If you want to, Ruby. I won’t stop you.
Once the group go separate ways the two leaders make their way to the concession stand. After waiting five minutes in line they finally make it to the cashier..... Who they already met before.
Jaune: MRS.LARS!
Mrs. Lars: Hey! Just got out of the registry seat so now I’m helping with concessions!
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘SERIOUSLY!’
Jaune: But you...we just saw....ok. Anyway I kinda got a long list of things hope you don’t mind.
Mrs. Lars: Oh don’t worry about that honey. It’s my pleasure!
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘I’m about to slap a bitch.’
Jaune: Ooookay. Well I will need a extra large popcorn, one blue Freezi, one pretzel with honey mustard, a churro, a box of Sour Kids, a medium unsweetened iced tea if you have, a box of Red Whips, one small sized Duke a Cola, one red Freezi, a hotdog with ketchup, a medium popcorn, and for me I’ll have a medium Spurts with a medium popcorn as well with layered butter. Did I get everything Rubes?
Ruby:(Staring blankly at Mrs. Lars) Yep that’s everything.
Mrs. Lars: Great! Just give me once sec, and I’ll be right back. (Walk to the side to start getting everything set)
Ruby stares plainly at the young mother as she works tracking her every move as a hunter stalks a deer. She looked like a fast worker, so she already looks to have half the order almost done. A mature woman with good work ethic and younghful energy, a easy guise to fool young men to fall prey to the claws of the cougar. Not while this silver eyed eagle was around.
Jaune:(Looks at her with concern) Everything ok Ruby?
Ruby:(Smiles brightly at him) Oh yeah I’m good, no need to worry about me!
Jaune: You sure? If it’s about the whole ‘minor’ thing you can talk to me you know. I’m sorry if it came across as offensive.
Ruby: Huh? Oh no! No, no, no, no, no! You don’t need to worry about that it’s not a whole big thing, I know you guys didn’t mean it so it cool!
Jaune: Mmmm. Ok, if you say so.
Mrs. Lars: Here we are!
With the short time both Ruby and Jaune talked, it seemed Mrs. Lars spent getting there order done. With exceptional timing as well.
Jaune: Wow! That was probably the quickest service I ever had.
Mrs. Lars: I do my best for all my costumers!
Ruby:(Growls silently)
Jaune: Alright so what’s my balance looking like?
Mrs. Lars: Well with all the items here it should come up to 41 Lien.
Jaune: Wait that’s it? I don’t mean to seem unappreciative, but that seems way too low a price for the things we’re getting.
Mrs. Lars:(Smiling) Oh that’s because I gave you the 30% Huntsman discount. So you saved 9 lien with your purchase. Very good deal right.
Jaune: WOW! That’s....great. Thanks Mrs. Lars.
Mrs. Lars: Oh please, enough with the Mrs. Lars, makes me feel like a old woman. Call me Daisy.
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘Great! Now I have a full name to put on your tombstone!’
Jaune: Ok, well we should probably get going, thanks for the help Mrs.- I mean, Daisy.
Daisy: My pleasure Jaune.~ Enjoy the movie.
With this, both leaders make their way towards the cinema room for the movie and once inside they find Nora, Ren and Oscar sitting in the marked premium seating. Slowly walking up the stairs Jaune moves past the other guests to reach his team. Once making it to them he gives out the snacks and beverages they asked for. Meanwhile Ruby sits down in her assign seat with a neutral face and doesn’t seem to acknowledge anybody around her. Probably because while she is calm on the outside, her mind was brewing a storm.
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘Daisy. DAISY!!! Since when did they get on a first name basis now! It must have been at some point because I never heard Jaune call Casserole Witch by her first name. And what’s with all the ‘My Pleasure’ nonsense! It’s like she’s dropping land mines to catch him in her web of lust and perversion! Well not on her watch! No thank you Casserole Mom, but Jaune Arc is off limits!.....Even if technically he is free territory at the moment.’
Ruby looks to see Jaune almost blissfully unaware of what the temptress tried to do to him. His poor innocent, dense as a brick mind couldn’t probably detect that the single mother was trying to flirt with him.
Ruby:(Mentally) ‘Don’t worry Jaune I’m not letting that temptress get her ugly claws on you. It’s my territory she’s crossed and this reaper doesn’t share! .....Even if you’re not technically mine yet. It still stands!’
The War has begun!

WE’RE LIVE WITH... KATHERINE PLUMBER from newsies
❛ ( MAIA MITCHELL ) ◈ dude, shut up ! KATHERINE PLUMBER from NEWSIES is on screen. their fans swear they’re just INDEPENDENT & AMBITIOUS, but we’ve all seen their JUDGMENTAL & PRIVILEGED side ! according to TRUMAN WIKIA, they’re TWENTY-TWO years old, BISEXUAL, & identify as FEMALE ( SHE / HER ). they’re currently a JOURNALIST & are SUSPICIOUS about life in truman. luckily they have THEIR TYPEWRITER, THE ‘NEWSIES STOP THE WORLD’ ARTICLE, AND ‘THE NEWSIES BANNER’ with them & can visit MEDDA LARKIN’S THEATER whenever they want.
let’s roll a clip from newsies!
despite coming from a story based on the newsboys’ strike of 1899, katherine was ahead of her time. she was the daughter of the most influential publisher in new york city, joseph pulitizer, but she wanted to make a name for herself as a journalist, choosing the byline katherine plumber over her father’s more power name. as a young woman, she was stuck reviewing vaudeville shows. she was waiting on her big break, a chance to show her true skills. finally, she found her story: the newsboys’ strike. she helped the boys by getting their cause out there. they even made the front page!!! she’s not one to brag but the strike probably wouldn’t have succeeded without her help.
what are some fun facts?
all this truman crap doesn’t add up in katherine’s book. she found the article she wrote about the newsboys’ strike. her parents claimed it was some school project that she forgotten about. she didn’t believe it. it was too good to be made as some silly project. she was good, but she wasn’t that good. also... if it was a history project, why were none of the actual newboys mentioned? she wasn’t one to just make stuff up!?
katherine still uses ‘plumber’ as her byline. she works for an online site, similar to buzzfeed or huffpost. she’s still stuck writing about entertainment and listicals, but she sometimes manages to sneak her way into a real story every now and again. she’s hoping to work her way up into an actual news site, though on her merits and merits alone. no help needed.
she’s very no nonsense, especially when it comes to her work. she demands to be taken seriously and refuses to be belittled into some pretty young thing. she fights her own fights and will always speak her mind, even when it gets her in trouble from time to time. however, the facade is dropped in moments of vulnerability.
who are the actors in their life?
actual truman actors
PARENTS - they’re protective to say the least. not the biggest fans of her big mouth, they still manage to support her journalism dreams well enough. however, they seem to be doing everything in their power from uncovering all the inner workings of truman. ( safe to say, she hides a lot of her research from them. )
general connections
COWORKERS - fellow journalists who work for the news site. could be her superiors or people who she envies because they get to write real stories.
POTENTIAL CONSPIRACY THEORISTS - katherine isn’t quite a theorist herself, but she definitely collects any and all theories. anyone who seems to have any suspicion about their island community, she gravitates towards.

could you explain the references in your intro
Ooooo buddy, you poor sweet anon, you opened a door you weren’t ready for!!!! They’re all references to my literal favorite band in the world Sloan. Who I love more than my own life. And they’re the only men I literally stan because I love them so much and they all just mean so much to me lol
“Who Taught You To Live Like That?” is the named of/lyrics to one of their songs, which is one of my favorites of theirs. The “I love a long goodbye” is from another one of their songs. (EDIT: I actually just changed it to coax me, cajole me” which is a lyric from their song called Coax Me, which is another one of my favs lol and I just found it more relevant to be the quote for the ask box than the last one)
The “don’t believe no one cares” quote at the end of my bio is from another one of my favorite songs by them called Everything You’ve Done Wrong. It’s...definitely not a song that everyone will like lol, but I love it mostly because it has a lot of personal meaning to me. So, when I was in 6th grade, I was still living with my mom and she was extremely abusive, physically and mentally. So when my music teacher in school played the movie Newsies (which is about the newboy’s strike of 1899, where a bunch of orphans who sold newspapers went on strike against the hike of the distribution cost of the papers) I became, like, irrationally attached to it, mainly because I dreamed of being an orphan or a runaway, living on my own, escaping from my abusive mom, and making a family of my own with a bunch of other kids like me. Anyway, the reason I’m saying this is because I found a Newsies fanfic back then called Everything You’ve Done Wrong, which was a modern day AU about one of the boys (Spot) being a foster kid from an extremely abusive, fucked up home essentially falling in love with another kid (Racetrack) whose family was also fucked up and extremely homophobic. It was heavily influenced by the band Sloan (hence the name lol) and had references all throughout the story. Even literally: some of the boys in the fic are in a garage band and they play Sloan covers lol. So the song EYDW means a lot to me because that fic meant a lot to me growing up.
THEN, the two girls who wrote EYDW came out with a fucking prequel to EYDW which is still to this day one of my favorite things I’ve ever read lol. It’s called Take Good Care of the Poor Boy, which is ALSO a Sloan song. It’s about Spot getting moved into the foster home that lead him to meeting Race, and I’ve never related to a character more than I’ve related to Spot in this fucking fic. It’s insane. I literally printed out both EYDW then later Poor Boy and put them into a fucking binder so that I could read them at school and read them at night in bed (considering this was a time before smartphones, back when we had to read fanfics on large computers in the middle of the room lol.)
Basically, those fics introduced me to the band Sloan, and the band means so much to me I can hardly describe it. They got me through a lot of shit. And I’ve been to so many of their shows that I can honestly consider the band members, especially Chris, friends. Me and Chris have hung out after shows and talked so much that whenever Chris sees me in the crowd, he waves to me and says hey, then after the show he’ll talk to a bunch of fans then come over and sit just with me and we'll just talk one on one for literal hours (or until Eddie and the rest of the roadies are finished packing up, depending on the show lol) about absolutely everything. They’re genuinely really good guys and I love them all.
One of these days I’ll make a Sloan playlist to put on here. But yeah, anyways, sorry for the rambling. It’s just impossible to talk about Sloan without going on for an hour about why I love them so much lol

Some quick #newsiestober2018 headcanons bc I missed days oops
Day One: Jack
Jack is an incredibly tactile person; This shifts depending on who he’s with, the circumstances, and a million other things. People like his newboys know his boundaries very well, just as he does with them. David’s still learning, but he picks the cues up quickly (Jack’s glad he doesn’t have to explain them all)
The literal worst when drunk: Waxing poetic about Davey and just how beautiful his eyes are in the starlight, or how Spot is a “shortass wharf rat”. The boys write down the funniest things he’s said.
He’s so changeable when it comes to affection. Some days he requires that he’s the one receiving affection; having his hair played with, the other person even just keeping an arm around him while he lays against them. Other days, he’s hugging his friends from behind, ruffling their hair, any and everything.
His own problems get in his way quite often. I have to explain it more but I’ll keep it simple; he isn’t a fighter, and he runs away from problems rather than face them, even if it seems like it’s false. It’s a survival thing, really.
His favourite season is probably summer. The hottest to sell in, but he likes it when Spot lets him and the boys go and swim in his terf. He also just likes how lively things get.
Day Two: Katherine
Katherine is reserved. When she needs to be. Meaning: She’ll keep her cool until she’s reached a breaking point. Then she’ll go off.
Struggles quite a bit with accepting the fact that she doesn’t like boys, not entirely at least. Really, she could be confident with it, were it not for her father bearing down on her 24/7 about being some Golden Girl of the Pulitzer name.
Favorite season is either winter or spring. The colder weather just has a serenity to it, but also can be dangerous very quick, much like her. However, spring is symbolic of new beginnings, and nothing is more enticing than the start of a new day possibly being better than the last.
Day Three: Davey
Davey is a little more hesitant when it comes to touching. Not by a lot, though. Having lived with Les, Sarah, and of course his parents, he’s gotten rather used to affection being shown, and frequently. He finds himself wanting to keep a hand on the shoulder of any of the younger Newsies (and Jack.)
He’s very much the opposite of organized, at least in the traditional sense. His schoolwork is usually spread out in some indiscernible pattern, that he swears he understands. Same goes with his thoughts. He’ll go off on a million tangents in his head to find the best way to take a conversation.
Continuing with his brain, this kid knows a lot of random facts. He bounces them off of Sarah, but he’s now got a lot of knowledge on at least nine authors he can name and their works, the solar system, factory work, random headlines, and of course, his snake facts.
He isn’t as artistic as Jack, no, but he can write a hell of a short story. Something about the fantasy world is downright mesmerizing to him; he can live in real life, and escape to one of wizards whenever he wants. He often tells the newsies these stories, because their eyes just glow at the idea of such.
Davey is very good at telling when his family (Jack, and most of the newsies now included) isn’t doing okay. He can tell when Sarah isn’t feeling well, or when Les had a rough go of things in school. He knew his parents were having a difficult time with money, long before it was announced. He knows very well that Jack just needs an escape, and that Santa Fe isn’t entirely necessary. He just needs a break, and yet, he doesn’t quite know how to help. (Jack hasn’t told him directly, but him just being there helps enough.)
@newsiestober has all the prompts for this month! Check them out! I’ll probably do drawings or headcanons regardless so be on the look out!

Newsboy Strike: Day 12 - Saturday, July 29, 1899
Papers offer newsboys returns on unsold papers
Who was striking? Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Long Island City, Mount Vernon, Newark, Yonkers, Asbury Park, Mamaroneck, Rochester, New Rochelle, Danbury CT
By July 29, even the non-boycotted papers were admitting that the strike was weakening. There was internal dispute among the strikers about if they should continue striking at all. More copies of the World and Journal were available on the street than at any point since the strike started. The people selling them met no resistance, a fact the Tribune suggested might indicate the strikers had lost the energy to fight.
Those still loyal to the fight found hope in the fact that adult newsdealers’ associations had declared their support for the strike, but the Tribune disagrees. They say that while adult help may have lead to victory earlier in the strike, at this point it will only prolong the boys’ defeat.
The strikers’ tendency to jump from leader to leader without giving any of them any real power to make change continued. The Herald claimed that new leaders were elected: Young Monix in Park Row, Puts Butler in Upper Manhattan, and Race Track Higgins in Brooklyn. The Tribune, meanwhile, was told that the leaders were Morris Cohen, president; Nick Meyer, vice president; Scabooch Wolff, financial secretary; Crutchin Morris, recording secretary; Myer Cohen, treasurer. None of these boys clearly had much power if the union they supposedly ran could not consistently name them as their leaders.
The boycotted papers continued to bribe the newsboys to return to work. The Sun claims that their bribes have gone up from $2 per day to flat fees ranging from $5 to $150. Some of the leaders claimed to have turned down offers of as much as $600, though that may be a childhood tendency to exaggerate.
In a further attempt to lure newsboys back, one of the papers offered 10% returns on all unsold papers. Not to be outdone, the other paper offered 20% returns. Finally, both papers upped the offer to full returns. The strike leaders took none of these offers, confident that the papers’ resolve was weakening and they could get the reduced price they were asking for. Some boys say they would hold out for “a few shares of stock in the paper and $1000 a day.” However, the offer stood beyond the end of the day.
In the World’s first report on the newsboy strike, they claimed that George Corr, former employee of the Evening Telegram was suing his former employers for $10,000 for false arrest. Corr put a sign up by his business on Friday saying the newsboy strike was over and not to believe the papers saying otherwise to increase their own sales. Corr was then arrested on the request of the Telegram on false charges and was held on a $500 bail. William Fitzgibbons, another former Telegram employee, alleges somebody pulled a gun on him for telling newsboys they were being deceived.
Sources about this day: The Brooklyn Eagle: “The Newsboys’ Strike” The Herald: “Striking Newsboys Stand Firm” New York Tribune: “‘Kid’ Blink Fined” New York Tribune: “Fable Repeated in Fact” New York Tribune: “New York Newboys (Illustrated Supplement)” The World: “Herald Employees Sued for $10,000”

That’s Not My Name
Request: HCS with Racetrack Higgins and reader where the reader 100% REFUSES to call him Race because "thats not a name" and they end up just call him 'Ant' or 'Tony'
A/N: I loved writing this because it the kind of bullshit i pull :)
so you and race had know each other since you were little
and you always knew him as anthony higgins
so that one fateful day he came to visit you, rambling about how Jack Kelly himself gave Anthony the nickname Racetrack
you knew from that moment you were gonna give him hell about it forever
“I’m Racetrack Higgins now, (Y/N)”
“Sorry, I don’t know anyone named Racetrack, but I do know a boy named Anthony”
Every time you pass him while he’s selling you greet him with a little “Hey Tony,” and smile sickeningly sweet at him
If you really want to press his buttons
you call him Anty
“Well if it isn’t my favorite newboys, Anty”
“It’s Racetrack, (Y/N), don’t embarrass me”
Later on, you decided to go tease Race a little more
Except you had caught him on a day where he was slightly on edge
“Hellllloooo Tony,” you hugged him from behind
and suddenly you were pinned against the wall in an alleyway
“(Y/N), this is the last straw now, I go by Racetrack”
the sudden aggression and tension had winded you as you stood pinned between your best friend and a brick wall
“Do you understands?” he’d lean into your ear and whisper
All you could do was nod because man, you did not mind being so close to him when he was like this
“Now, say it”
Your lips quivered, not in fear, but as if they were trying to talk
You were so flustered being in such a tight spot
And you did something probably stupid but it felt right
You kissed him and he even kissed back!
“God damn, I fell for Racetrack Higgins” you mumbled
“Yeah you did sweetheart,” he said and kissed you softly again
