Marty and Justin were slacking off at work as usual. This slackness caused more work for their coworker Evan. Evan decided to play a joke on them. While they weren't paying attention in their laziness, he used his TF Ray app to turn both of them into boots. He then just left them there. He decided he would change them back to normal after his lunch break. Being boots for an hour or so should teach them a lesson, he thought.

Marty didn't know what had happened. He was sitting there goofing off with Justin, and the next thing he knew, he found himself immobile and unable to even speak. His view was limited. He tried to move or speak, but nothing happened. He started to panic mentally.

Justin had seen Evan approaching and thought he was just taking a picture of them. It was instant, and his point of view had completely changed. His body had changed. He couldn't move his body at all, which was disconcerting. He couldn't speak to call for help. He heard Evan walking away and laughing to himself. He couldn't escape the fact that he had been changed into something.

Five minutes after Evan left for lunch, Ricardo came walking through the area and found a nice pair of boots on the floor. No one was around the area. The crew for this area had gone to lunch, he figured. But he pondered why they would leave nice boots just lying around. He looked down at his worn-out ruined boots. He really needed a new pair. Since no one was near them, he thought he would take them for himself.

Ricardo took off his worn-out boots, which were literally falling apart. The heels were falling off. He threw them in a nearby trash can. He put on the boots he found on the floor. He found them to be a perfect fit for his feet. He tied them up and went back to his part of the construction project. Each step felt good in his new boots. He definitely was going to keep this pair. If anyone asked about them, he decided he would claim that he bought them.

Justin was horrified when he realized what Evan had turned him into. A foul-smelling socked foot smothered his insole face, applying extreme pressure, forcing him to take in the foul stench with each step. The pressure of each step was painful. Even when the foot wasn't moving, it still was painful being stood on. It was a nightmare. He was a literal boot for someone to wear. The bad part was that the guy wearing him was completely unaware of how much he was torturing another human being at his feet.

Marty was mentally screaming and begging for mercy. The sock foot smelled so horrible. He was a boot, and he hated it. The more he kept being walked on, the more he was praying for sweet death that wasn't coming. This existence was a complete nightmare. Each step was pain renewed over and over with no end in sight. He didn't know how he got turned into a boot, but he hoped the nightmare would end soon.

Evan returned an hour and a half later. He was ready to turn his lazy cowokers back to normal. He found the boots missing. He looked around but couldn't find them. He then saw a pair of ruined worn-out boots in the trash can in the area. He realized that someone had taken them as their new boots. He didn't want that fate for those two. They were only to be temporary boots.

Ricardo saw one of the guys asking if they saw a pair of boots that was left back in that area. Everyone he asked said no. When he came to ask him, he also told him no. There was no way he was giving up his new boots now. They were super comfortable and durable. The guy would have to buy himself a new pair of boots as far as he was concerned. He went back to work after that brief distraction.

Evan's search was fruitless. Everyone he asked said no. He was sure one of them was lying to him. They left their old boots in the trash and took the ones he had left on the floor. There was no way to recover Justin and Marty. Yet, this could be a blessing in disguise at the same time. No more lazy coworkers could mean he would get two new guys that would share the workload. He decided to end his search and return back to work.

TWO MONTHS LATER.......

Ricardo sat down eating his lunch. He was amazed at how his boots held up. He had never had boots that survived his feet this long without great damage to it. He really wondered how long his favorite footwear would truly last on his feet. Besides, the foot odor on the inside of the boots was a true mark of ownership. He would be torturing a guy if he made him sniff his boots now.

Justin loved his owner's feet. His face had already been molded completely to his foot for maxium comfort. It was a badge of honor reek of his sweaty foot stench. He had completely forgotten that he was ever human at all. He only recongize himself as nothing but a dumb boot for Ricardo to wear and use as he pleased.

Marty was slowly losing his mental battle. His face was so owned by Ricardo's foot, but he refused to accept that fate. He will be human again one day soon, he thought to himself. He won't be Ricardo's boot forever. He decided he would continue to resist his foot. But he didn't know how much longer his mind could hold on.

Oh I got you! I’ll do as many holidays as I can think of (including birthdays-this is gonna be an uber long post but i’ll organize it by months

January

Darry’s birthday

Those two will wake Darry up by jumping on his bed because there just SO damn excited (they used to do this as kids more so than now because they realize Darry needs to sleep-

They convinced Dally and Two Bit to dig up info on Darry’s boss so they could blackmail him into giving Darry the day off with pay 💀

They purposefully turn his alarm off in the middle of the night and then he freaks out because he overslept and Pony/Soda has to calm him down by telling him what they did (he was a mix of concerned, a bit angry and lowkey impressed

They don’t let Darry do anything on his birthday like the will straight up shove him into his chair and push a newspaper at him while they do all the chores that day

They deep cleaned the house while he was sleeping (they even snuck into his room and dusted everything and polished all his trophies (They were so super careful with those)

Speaking of trophies, side headcanon that Darry pawned away his football trophies and uniform to make more money because money was uber tight around this time and Soda/Pony made Dally break in and get (steal) them back (Dally went to jail and he was very mad)

Darry bawled and didn’t even care at that point he was so grateful

Soda and Pony have to buy a cake because they almost burned the house down trying to make one (Soda got distracted and left the cake in the oven for so long it caught fire and Pony forgot about it-

They don’t let Darry leave the house tho (they also don’t tell him Soda got a speeding ticket)

They literally tried to make like a five course meal but at that point they just ended up making a bunch of random appetizers and some tacos or something-Darry didn’t care tho he was honored

Pony in the future takes up two jobs (he waits tables with Johnny and works at the library) and him and Soda save up to buy him whatever they can that they think he’d like

Its mostly a bunch of stuff from his favorite football team and they buy him new work boots

They also bought him a chinchilla once (Darry loves chinchillas tell me otherwise) and Darry was just so happy

They insist on cuddling with him that night and at that point he feels so spoiled but he can’t even say no 😭

They all end up snuggled in his bed with Darry in the middle-he’s genuinely so happy and it’s one of the only days he looks forward to

February

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day is not just for romance! It’s about spreading love to everyone you love including friends and family

The three Curtises definitely leave little things in each others rooms like they’ll scatter those chocolate hearts in each others rooms-Pony does it when Darry and Soda are at work, Soda does it at night when Darry and Pony are sleeping and Darry does it right before he leaves in the morning for work

They all end up buying one gift for each other-it’s never really a “big” gift but it’s something to show they love each other

Soda and Darry both get Pony books-Darry even saved up to buy Pony a little polaroid camera and Pony’s side of the room is littered with pictures of him and Johnny and him with the gang and just sunset pictures. It makes Soda and Darry so happy to see

Pony and Darry get Soda those giant chocolate things 😭 They know bro is absolutely food motivated but then he ends up eating the whole thing in one sitting and getting sick-they also get him stupid little toys they find. Soda would love those stretchy guys the dentist gives you as a kid He also likes fidgeting so they get him little fidget toys (him and Steve goof off at work with them and have gotten them confiscated 😔)They get him a lot of horse themed things too!

Pony and Soda get Darry little football figurines and stuff-one time they actually managed to scrape together the cash to get him tickets to go see a game-they could only buy one tho but Darry had the time of his life and actually looked his age for once when he came back.

Soda makes cringy little “roses are red violets are blue i think you’re great and I love you” type poems and writes them on hearts and hides them around the house for his brothers

Pony writes both of his brothers a very personalized poem-it’s so complex and honestly Soda and Darry are both uber impressed with his writing skills

Darry leaves little doodles around the house of things he laments on them doing as kids-he sketches one picture before bed every night (not even just on Valentine’s Day but as a coping mechanism as well) and the whole month of February he straight up draws the most beautiful pictures of them hugging and them as kids-Soda and Pony keep them in a drawer. Darry found said drawer and almost cried because he didn’t think anyone saw them or kept them

Every year they do a little tribute to their parents because they loved them-they’ll put a heart shaped piece of paper on their bed and a few roses and daffodils in their bedroom

They all eat little candy hearts in Darry’s bed before falling asleep

March

St. Patrick’s Day

Okay so this is more so when they were younger because I feel like St. Patrick’s Day is more so a holiday for kids but still-

Soda makes green pancakes. He makes a bunch of green food and even dyes their milk green (he also dyes the toilet water green)

Dont let him have any food dye

I feel like the three boys used to set up Leprechaun traps a lot and Mr/Mrs Curtis would buy those little gold chocolate coins and scatter them around to make it look like a Leprechaun was actually in the house lol-they also wrote some note like “better luck next year!” In shitty green marker and Pony used to get so mad-he literally guarded the traps all night because he was determined to catch one but he fell asleep and had to be carried to bed 😭

Even when Darry grew out of believing in Leprechauns he never told Soda and Pony and always helped them make traps

I feel like the first one after their parents death was really sad so Darry just coerced Pony into making more Leprechauns traps (which he begrudgingly does because “I’m thirteen now I know it was just mom and dad” but Darry spent all night doing what his parents did just to make Pony smile. He never tells Pony (Pony probably knows it’s Darry but it still made him cry)

I feel like Soda helped out but he insisted on making it ‘more mischievous’ so he put green handprints and footprints on the ground and Darry FREAKED OUT when he saw 😭 literally took Soda outside and was like “ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS” (he didn’t care much he just didn’t want the floors and sinks to be ruined 💀)

They definitely but those little chocolate coins and just spend the whole day eating them. Soda and Darry sneak some into Pony’s lunch and Soda and Pony do the same with Darry and Pony and Darry do the same with Soda <3

I don’t have much since St. Patrick’s day isn’t very like….popular? But I feel like Soda would wear a Leprechaun hat (he pulls it off somehow. Fuck him fr)

Darry lets Soda dye the food green but half the time it just turns the food diarrhea colored because he tried to dye meat

April

Easter

similarly to St. Patrick’s Day I feel like this is also a holiday more for kids (I mean without the religious aspect of course) but the Curtis boys (Soda mainly) LOVE dyeing and decorating eggs

Pony cannot stand the smell of vinegar tho so it’s hard for him (he uses a clothespin to keep his nose shut, dumbass) but he loves doing it too

I feel like Darry would be super simplistic. He dyes his eggs one or two colors and lets it dry before doing the most articulate sharpie art on the eggs. Like it’s this mosaic type shit in Sharpie and Pony and Soda are so impressed

Soda’s are always like-every color they can be and then some because he uses colorful markers on them. If a rainbow threw up on an egg that’s what Soda’s would look like. He also loves putting googly eyes on them and he even makes little paper hats for his and uses pipe cleaners to make arms and legs 😭

Pony’s actually look so beautiful. He loves the warm colors and likes to make his look like scenery. Like he’ll dye his eggs sunset colors and then use markers to paint mountains and trees and whatever else. Darry and Pony are super artistic-Soda just likes making his look like what he enjoys and his brothers have no problem with it

They line the eggs up around the house so that it feels more holiday like

All three Curtis brothers are suckers for candy and chocolate (obviously) so they spend their grocery budget that week on chocolate bunnies and peeps (Soda is the only one who likes them but they buy them for him)

Pony and Soda have both given themselves stomachaches and Darry has to take care of them 😭

I feel like the Curtis parents used to buy like fake bunny feet prints and would put them around the house when they were kids

They definitely have Easter egg hunts. They do these with the whole gang (Dally never finds any, he just sneaks behind people and takes theirs from their baskets)

Theres never a prize or anything because Darry’s the one who hides them so he doesn’t really participate but they combine all the candy from the eggs and they just sit on the floor and devour the candy

Darry buys a ham. All three Curtises LOVE ham but they never really have enough money to buy one often so you better believe these three boys are eating the whole entire thing and not leaving leftovers

Darry makes mac and cheese too (someone said he was a mac and cheese guy. I love that) and it’s a fun night for all of them

Theyre all like way too full in the end but nobody really minds much. They enjoy nights where they can pig out a bit lol

July

July 4th

ohhhhh boy

These boys LOVE July 4th (Especially Soda)

The whole gang goes down to a lake for the day to just chill out for a bit

Darry brings hot dogs and hamburgers and the gang fucks with them so hard, they all love barbecue

They also love Sparklers (especially Pony because Ponyboy is a wee bit of a pyromaniac

Soda always gets scared by them when they light up because it takes a minute and he always throws it right over Darry’s head. He almost made him catch fire like more than once

“Sorry Dar I got scared 😨” “It’s fine” he says while patting the small fire out of his hair

Pony likes writing on trees with the burnt ends of the sparkler. He thinks it makes him tuff (loser)

I feel like they either bring down hot dogs and hamburgers or they just buy like five pounds of steak

Likley the latter because they are pure carnivores

Dally buys illegal fireworks but Darry actually does have a license so he shoots them off by the lake (they all go diving for the pieces of the fireworks after-they make it a game)

I feel like Soda would buy those obnoxious Uncle Sam hats but I’m not sure if he’d pull that one off (sorry Soda)

They spend most of the day in the lake-all three brothers love swimming. Soda loves doing those weird dolphin dives into the water but whenever he comes up from the water he’s like…glistening. Darry likes anything that can show off his strength so he loves to swim. Pony gets tired kinda easily in the water because he goes HARD in the water and then like fifteem minutes later he’s clinging to Darry’s back

Swimming definitely makes them all hungry as fuck too so they end up somehow devouring all five pounds of steak

Soda goes into the water again but ends up crawling back because he got cramps

The lake is also right by the west side so they like to just sit back with each other and watch the fireworks from the lake

They throw the scraps back on the west side tho because they hate that they just leave their litter there

One of them definitely gets bit by like a snapping turtle or something

I feel like 4th of July isn’t really a holiday to them, more so a day they can go to the lake and pig out on steaks lol

Pony’s birthday

I feel like Pony doesn’t really like his birthday because his fourteenth and fifteenth birthdays must have been super hard for him (plus it’s around the time the book events happen and it just makes him depressed)

But Darry and Soda do anything they can to make him happy-Darry skips work for the day and Soda does too

Darry lets him sleep in (usually he has Pint wake up at 8 or 9 on weekends so he’s on some sort of sleep schedule but he’ll cut him slack on his birthday)

I feel like the two of them stay up super late decorating the house for him too-they tie balloons to his seat and they have little homemade banners (they do this for all the Curtises birthdays) and Pony gets so surprised every time because he thinks he’s too old for it-

Soda even made cupcakes (i headcanon Soda as a good baker-I know in the book Pony said he liked Darry’s cakes better because Soda puts too much sugar in the icing but I feel like that’s just because Soda likes it super sweet) but he knows Pony doesn’t like it too sweet so he’s careful with how much sugar he puts in

Darry brings Pony a cupcake when he wakes up (after Soda starts calling for Darry like “can you get him a cupcake I don’t wanna get up :(“ but they both sit with him as he sleepily eats the cupcake and is like “thanks guys” while snuggling into them as a thank you 😭 they better not say anything tho because if they do he stops immediately and is like “I ain’t a baby quit babying me i’m fifteen now not four 😡😡”

They seriously just let him do what he wants all day-if he wants to read with them they do that. If he wants to show them a movie or go to the drive in, they do that (and if he wants to bring Johnny or Two Bit they pick them up if they’re up for going. If he wants to just lay down for a bit they’re snuggling him together

Darry definitely brings them all to Dairy Queen for lunch and spoils the hell out of Pony-he gets him one of those ice cream things (Blizzards? Is that what they’re called?) and makes sure he gets the biggest one there and he lets Pony get jowever much food he wants-Pony has eyes bigger than his stomach tho and ends up needing to lay down for a bit lmao

But in the end they take him to the pool at the Y to help work his appetite back because Darry always makes Pony’s favorite meal for dinner (he had a feeling Ponybwould end up feeling like shit so they take him out early in the morning so he has time to digest it all lmao) but anyway, he loves swimming SO much and gets so excited whenever they go to the pool

He likes laying on his back and just floating for a bit until he bumps into Darry who just stares down at him and laughs-Soda also pushes on his stomach/chest and shoves him under and Pony’s just like “hey 😡😡” he doesn’t actually care though he just jumps on Soda’s back and they start wrestling while Darry just watches

They’re there for basically the whole day and they’re all hungry in the end so while Pony and Soda are washing off Darry is making steaks for Pony’s birthday (Pony LOVES barbecue)

After dinner they let him open his gifts and he’s so grateful for all of them-he actually gets really nice gifts-he got a bunch of camera film for his polaroid (polaroids were invented in 1948 so i’m safe), they get him a bunch of books from his favorite authors (which Pony stays up all night reading) and they get him some art supplies because it’s a healthy way he copes with his trauma and they’re more than happy to support him!

They then go in Darry’s pickup truck and Dary lets Soda/Pong sit in the back (like in th cart the truck drags along) and he just goes for a long drive while the sun sets and Ponybid SO happy-he gets happier when Darry tells him he looks tuff with his wind blown hair too

They end the night with chocolate cake with sprinkles inside and by cuddling, Pony in the middle and Soda/Darry just holding him 💜

October

Soda’s birthday

Soda LOVES his birthday because he loves the attention 😭 He’s so happy when he realizes the day is all about him-

Pony and Darry go CRAZY decorating because Soda literally walks downstairs and acts like he’s witnessing the greatest thing ever-he looks like a kid in a candy shop and he literally puts his brothers in a BONE crushing hug and he flat out starts crying 😭😭

Steve takes Soda’s shift for him because he’s nice like that on occasion (but Soda you owe me in April when it’s my birthday 😡😡”) so Soda can just stay home all day

Darry stays home from work too and depending on what Pony is doing in school he’ll let him kiss the day if he doesn’t have tests or anything (Pony lies a lot unless it’s a class he doesn’t wanna make the test up for)

Soda is just so happy and he makes Pony cuddle him for a few extra moments and Pony doesn’t mind until he’s like “Soda I need to pee” “Just go here I don’t wanna let go :(“ “NO”

Pony goes back because Soda starts fake crying lmao

They get him out of bed and they prepare themselves to match Soda’s energy for the day because he just really loves that his birthday is in fall and he loves doing all the fall things on his birthday (apple/pumpkin picking, playing around in the leaves, that sort of thing

Soda loves apple picking evacuee he can climb up the trees and just get the apples from the top-plus they’re his favorite fruit but Darry has to keep being like “Soda save room for dinner” but Soda doesn’t care lol

He loves going on hay rides at the pumpkin patches, he doesn’t care he’s turning 17 or 18, he’ll be giggling like a kid and like “LOOK AT THE HORSES!” (the horses wee pulling the hay barrel)

They take him to the petting zoo too but it backfires when he got emotionally attached to one of the lambs :(

They let him stay however long he wants and he’s just so happy because one of the lambs curled on his lap and fell asleep and he was just like “😮🥹” like bro was so close to crying-

He got a bit distracted by the horses too and Darry bought food for him to feed them-Soda has a way with animals and probably accidentally made several kids cry because they wouldn’t leave Soda alone and kept ignoring the kids/Darry didn’t have the heart to pull him away tho

When they get home Darry makes beef stew because Soda LOVES beef stew-Soda loves hearty fall foods.

He’s learned to make two pots because Soda straight up will eat all of it and leave nothing for anyone else lol

After they eat they give Soda gifts-he insists he doesn’t want anything but he also doesn’t protest being spoiled a bit lol

They get him a bunch of things he can build-he’s super good at what he does with cars and he really loves building things and taking things apart, so they get him like…3d puzzles and figurines he can build and he absolutely loves it and is so so happy <3

They know Soda loves his snuggles so Ponyboy will lay on top of him and Darry just envelopes him in this tight bone crushing hug-many happy tears are shed

Halloween

The Curtises honestly don’t do much for Halloween (except Soda, Soda LOVES Halloween and dressing up

Him and Steve dress up to go to work-Soda usually goes fully dressed as a zombie and Steve a werewolf (he even has a mask and a tail)-Soda’s able to charm his bosses into not being mad though and they actually manage to pull it off and they have good sales because people think it’s funny

I feel like Pony and Darry aren’t as into it-Pony doesn’t go trick or treating because “it’s for kids” so he usually hangs out with Dally and Johnny for the night and dresses like Paul Newman (of course he does-he actually pulls it off tho) Johnny probably just wears all black and Dally buys a scream mask and waits in bushes for kids to come out and they just steal the kids candy after they drop it because Dally is a dick and scares them 😭

Darry hands out candy and actually kinda gets into it because he’s super good with kids-he puts on a flannel and is just like “fine I’m Paul Bunyan”-he loves handing out candy tho and he’ll be super swwwgblike “oh wow that’s a scary ghost costume, you almost scared the life outta me!” like he just plays into it and he really does enjoy

Steve, Soda and Two Bit go trick or treating and of course Soda has his natural charm and girls bring him candy at work that day lol-Darry deals with similar stuff but he roofs this super sweet old lady’s home and she’s like “oh we don’t get kids often…do you want some candy young man?” and he’s like…trying to refuse but she keeps insisting and he eventually gives in 😭

So that night Darry comes home from work with a bag of candy and the leftover candy from handing it out, Pony comes beck with candy Dally gave him after he jumped kids for it and Soda brings back the mother load of candy

The three of them just eat candy together and watch scary movies (not really scary-think like Lifetime horror movies)

Pony likes chocolates, Sosa loves sour stuff and Darey enjoys just about anything, but he’s a sucker for chocolates with stuff inside (like Reese’s cups/Milky Ways)

One of them (all three of them) end up with stomachaches but it’s all good and they have a good night

November

Thanksgiving

The whole gang LOVES Thanksgiving

They used to do things before the holiday-every day in November they have the whole gang write something they’re thankful for and they put it in a jar to read at the table

Pony makes it heartfelt like “I’m grateful for my brothers and all they do for me”-Darry is the same way but after the book he gets really specific like “I’m thankful that Ponyboy is here with me and supports me after work” “I’m thankful for Sodapop and his endless snuggles even if it seems like I don’t want it”-Soda is kinda hit or miss, sometimes he’ll put something in but sometimes it’ll be like “I’m thankful for cheese puffs” and they’re like “Soda really 😒”

Everyone thinks Darry would cook everything by himself but I think that only happens after Pony insists on making the turkey and Darry’s like “Okay but you have to gut it” and Pony’s like “fine” but he takes one look inside and throws up and Soda kept sneaking food and then got sick because he ate raw turkey

Soda got banned and Pony refused to go back in

They all make the stuffing together tho and it turns into a bit of a food fight lol-they’re all laughing and having fun

They invite the gang over and Dally gets so mad that Darry makes them do the whole “what are you thankful for” ritual and eventually just literally reaches over the table and grabs a drumstick and eats it and Darry’s so done

They have to kinda coax Johnny into eating sometimes because he doesn’t wanna be seen as greedy but a few bites later and it’s so good he can’t resist anymore and just devours half a turkey by himself

Pony stocks up on rolls and mashed potatoes-he loves turkey too but he will eat an entire pound of mashed potatoes by himself and he has

They’re all lowkey gross at the table like Dally literally just burps so fucking loud because he has to announce to everyone that he’s finished and Darry is just so done with him lmao

In the end they all just drag themselves to the couch-there’s literally no leftovers either that’s how much they eat. They’re seven teenage boys lol

Darry likes watching football but even then he’s so sluggish and full he can’t even focus on it lol

They all have a gigantic cuddle pile and they’re all whining about how full they are, it’s so sad

Johnny is not used to being full at all and he’s so embarrassed because he ate SO much and everyone is teasing him and Pony specifically because they’re so small but they packed away the most and Johnny ends up with super bad hiccups and that just leads to more teasing and he’s just like “shut up guys”

Theyre gross so they probably end up having annual burping contests. Johnny is of course undefeated and Dally storms off to god knows where after

When everyone leaves the Curtises are so full they can’t even go upstairs so they just lay on the couch and it’s so bad that it takes the next day to fully digest it all too 😭

This is probably their favorite or second favorite holiday.

December

Christmas

Their favorite holiday is Christmas honestly

They absolutely LOVE the preparation beforehand of baking Christmas cookies and putting up a little tree with decorations

They can’t really buy a tree but they have this fake tree that they have put up every year since Darry was a baby-it’s still somehow in tact

Mr. and Mrs. Curtis didn’t have a lot of money so they made a star out of cinnamon sticks that they used instead

The Curtises cherish that star and put two angels right next to it too to symbolize they haven’t forgotten their parents or their traditions

Additionally I feel like Mr. Curtis was the one who made the cookies with the boys while Mrs. Curtis would decorate

They all end up eating too much and Pony and Soda are SO whiny- “Darryyyyy why did you let us eat that much..?” “You’re the one who kept sneaking it!”

They actually end up pretty good in the end and give them out to the gang

Christmas Eve the Curtises don’t really like meeting up with the gang because they feel it’s a day for them and them alone-it’s the only day Darry actually makes them go to church and Soda HATES it-he just cannot sit still that long, and he gets bored during prayer sermons-Darry actually enjoys going but he usually doesn’t like-seek out going and Pony finds it serene and it gives him closure honestly

They also do that thing where they open one gift the night before-I feel like the year their parents died and money was super tight it ended up being like the Gift of the Magi-they all bought each other something but Darry sold his football uniform to get Soda and Pony something, Pony sold an exclusive book collection his parents bought him and Soda sold the horse saddle he used to ride Mickey Mouse-Darry bought Pony a little bookshelf, Soda bought Pony some pretty fancy figurines of the book characters, Darry bought Soda a mantle to put the saddle on and Pony bought him a horse statue to build and put the saddle on, Pony bought Darry some cleats and Soda bought him a helmet embroidered with his father’s words to him and all three of them sold their most valuable things to buy those for each other and they just cry for a bit

On a lighter note they all but each other joke gifts-at Pony’s school they have a sale where they just sell old junk nobody wants and Pony gathers the most random shit. Darry has a tiki statue in his room and Soda got a lamp with a mysterious brown stain on it (based off actual events)

They have turkey and ham because the gang comes over on Christmas and all of them are actually like-very food invested lmao

athey all cuddle by the fireplace and pass around secret santa gifts (they do Secret Santa Im calling it)

New Year’s Eve

They have their own little traditions! Darry makes appetizers (like jalapeño poppers and nachos) and they make 24, every hour they eat one together as a way to count down

I feel like they don’t do much during the day besides just go about their normal activities. Darry and Soda both get off early (Pong brings them bits of appetizers each hour to keep the tradition going because they did this with the Curtis parents and little bro hates change-

Darry and Soda get off at like…2 or 3 and that’s when things get fun

Theybhave game nights! Game nights usually don’t end well and this is no exception-

Teh first game they try to play is monopoly but Soda gets impulsive and that makes it easy to swindle him out of stuff so he’s the first one to go bankrupt and lose-it’s Pony and Darry that butt heads lmao

Darry is really good at swindling Ponyboy out of money and whatnot and Pony gets SO pissed- “Darry I want a refund 😡” like I know someone (Pony) walks away crying-

Pony has learned Darry’s tactics over the year and is VERY good at lying so he manages to swindle Darry this time and Darry is actually proud until he realizes he lost and then he flips the board lmao

They have other games they love to play too-they play cards as well but Soda is banned from playing War because he always peeks at his cards

Theh stop playing games after a while to watch the ball drop

They do a little reflection thing yearly-like “my name is ____ I’m ____ years old, I’m in the _____ grade, my favorite color is ____ my favorite food is _____ my favorite toy/game is _____ my favorite color is _____”-Mrs. Curtis made them do this but they agreed to keep the tradition going evacsue they thought it was cool to look back at their younger selves and see how they’ve changed

They read out past ones to each other and they get to the ones like “My favorite memory is _____, the funniest thing that’s happened this year was _____, I love _____ about my brothers” and the three of them are HOWLING because reading back on them they just love remembering and such-it’s bittersweet.

New Year’s eve is the one night Soda can stay up later than like-9:30 (Bro has a bed time-it’s not Darry that gave it to him, Soda just appointed himself a bed time and if he isn’t in bed by then he becomes a bitch) but New Years Eve is the one time a year he’s okay with staying up

Darry lets Pony and Soda have a champagne glass too and they all hug when the ball drops and then they just pas sour on the couch lol

Hazel Wells and the Multiverse of Jenkins

PFFT-EH?-EHHH? It's confirmed daylight savings time? Then take down the posters that've been up for 30 episodes implying it was November, you goofs.

I'm thinking Hazel showed up around September or October (i.e. before the November Sneezy Hawkins dance and we know she was in school for a few weeks before the exam at the end of "Teacher's Pal," because she told us), then Antony came home for winter break, and now it's March. That gives us a good estimate of things like founder's day and Dev's birthday. In fact, we know exactly what the length of time between those two dates is because Dev told us his birthday was 9 years, 7 months, and 14 days ago. I guess that checks out since Antony probably came home in December. If it's March for daylight savings, that would be another 3 months. This also implies Dimmadelphia is farther south than Dimmsdale, which occasionally saw snow (though it's possible godkids were wishing for it). Dimmadelphia doesn't seem to get snow.

Or he could just say "set your clocks BACK" as soon as I unpause and I'll just... sit here with my little notes. it's fine.

We're confirmed for fall, then. Possibly Hazel's been here a year if the posters are to be believed, but also at this point, those posters stay up all year round, so they're not to be trusted even for Episode 1. Unclear what the summer situation is, but I'll make a proper timeline another time.

I would say this is the key episode to build a timeline around. Then roughly place Dev's birthday and then Founder's Day the appropriate time apart and fill in the blanks.

Looks like "Operation: Birthday Takeback" aired July 31st, which might be a good place to start if I want to canonize Dev's birthday date for fanfic purposes.

Founder's Day was around school because Dale was prepping during "A New Dev-elopment," when we know school was in session, so I'll do math and consider my options when I'm done with Season 1.

So... Dev just told Hazel someone has a crush on her, but I find that hard to believe because they're at odds and I can't imagine he has good reasons for chatting like this.

He called her a nickname, which he only does when they're not friendly. And no Peri to give her any clues...

That said, it's funny that Dev's description of Trev was "He's my bud, so he probably won't give YOU time of day" and Trev is out here like "I am totally down to give Hazel the time of day." He's just chillin' and smiling. I like him.

I am once again fascinated by how he's never cared for "maintaining a reputation" at this school in any way and he's willing to dropkick whatever "cool, tough, and closed-off" persona he's formed at the first sign of what he thinks is a better future.

I like how Dimmadomes are known for putting the Dimm name on everything, but we keep seeing Dev's first name used (such as in the episode title "A New Dev-elopment" or Peri's quote "I'm going to take you from Dev to Dev-ine!")

It gives me the vibe that yes, he's a Dimmadome, but he's a little disconnected. Wow, it's a pun AND sadness!

I can't stop thinking about how annoyed he sounded when the time came to finally tell Vicky his last name. All the other Dimmadomes repeatedly introduce themselves by their full name... but he holds back.

Also, I like how the O-pairs are always down for anything. Dev is their special boy <3

So you obtained what you previously thought was Pokémon Silver (or at least a ripoff, given it was labeled “Gray” instead) from a Gamestop/thrift shop/friend who begged you to destroy it.

For nostalgia’s sake, you wanted to try it out since your Gameboy still worked.

Immediately you find out there’s no option to start a new game. You can only hit “Continue”.

Your character--Gray--was apparently at the entrance of a cave with sandy brown hues. He almost looked like a desaturated version of Red, but with spikier hair.

Checking the trainer card, you could tell the creators didn’t even try to hide the fact this was a bootleg game. The stats were total nonsense: Gray had badges from other regions (even Kalos and Alola, which should be impossible), the hours played and money collected both showed -100, and he had absolutely no Pokémon in his party. Not even a starter.

You then checked the Pokedex and saw only one Pokémon was registered:

Hypno, except this one was labeled “Shinto”, and was apparently a female. It had no furry collar, no pendulum, and hollow black eyes. But what was even more bizarre was the entry:

“SHINTO SO COOL!!!!SHINJTO NOT FROM BOOT LEG GAME BUT FROM REAL ONE!!!!PLAY WITH ME???”

Tbh it made you laugh a little, however upon returning to the overworld, Gray’s sprite turned to you.

“Don’t laugh..she’s scarier than you think.” The text box popped up.

You’re taken aback bc it could recognize your voice????

What the hell.

“You..can hear me?”

“I didn’t mean to startle you, it’s...just been a long time since anybody opened this game. It’s been so dark...and cold. What’s your name?”

“[Y/n]..”

As it turns out, Gray and Shinto (who showed up in the cave sometime later), were both sentient--aware that they’re trapped in a game. It wasn’t just the developers goofing around either...he had his own feelings.

Obviously he feels miserable about all of this, but Shinto doesn’t seem to care.

He doesn’t think of himself as a “real” trainer, though you reassure him it doesn’t matter how many badges or Pokémon he has.

“[Y/n], thank you but...there’s literally no Pokémon here except for her. They were too lazy to code anyone else in. I CAN’T be a trainer even if I wanted to be.”

“Then..why not catch her?” You suggested.

“....I tried once. She freaked out and nearly destroyed the entire game.” ‘‘..oh.”

Despite the circumstances, you managed to strike up a friendship with the two. Shinto would make standard Hypno noises with Gray as her translator. He can’t stand her but..she’s the only company he has. She’s like a cat who he loves/hates.

True to his word, there were no NPCs or Pokémon in the region. Just a mart, center, and Gray’s home. But you figured it was still worth exploring, so he let you despite not gaining any backstory on why the game was made like this.

Or even why Gray had such a distinct personality.

It’s clear they both have abandonment issues, so you’d take the Gameboy wherever you went, turning it on to chat with them about what was going on in the real world.

Hopefully one day you could bring them here, but for now you’ll make sure they’re not left in the dark anymore.

Buttons Analysis Post except it's just the three Buttons' I find myself thinking about often <3

First up !!

Damon Gillespie because I'm watching a Broadway Boot as I write this <3

Damon's Buttons is definitely a new newsie 2 me ? He's more in the background, from what I've noticed he hasn't really interacted with any of the other newsies (at least not a lot), past like — reactions to things they say (ex: him manually turning his head away from Crutchie when Crutchie says 'the kind that turns a ladies head' and him nodding & sort've going 'yeah' when Davey says they should save any exclusive for a real reporter), PLUS he scabs (which uksies Buttons also does but that's a topic 4 later in this post) & the way that is reacted to makes him seem just. newer. Like he's been there and people know he's been there, but they aren't particularly close to him. He's more comfortable with the newsies as a group during KoNY, but I didn't catch him interacting with anyone specifically (I totally could've missed something, though).

He is also, if I remember correctly, the seconddd scab? I wanna say? So, he gives in second rather than first like Alex Christians.

Adrienne Storrs because Marriott Buttons my lovely <3

Marriott Boots sadly do not exist but I have enough background info from old posts + hcs 4 her 2 properly analyze her so !!

She is definitely bisexual sorry. I do not usually add sexuality hcs into my character analyses unless it's like. Specifically surrounding their sexuality but she literally checked out Kath when she walked into Jacobi's. & she & JoJo are 'best gal pals' . I know what she is.

She's also probably one of the older newsies age wise (even though she's only been a newsie for a few years according to her actress), and like. Definitely a big sister figure for a few of the other newsies (specifically Specs !!), and along with JoJo, she also hangs out with Race & Albert (they are her favorite to goof around with, apparently), and she's a really positive person !! She also very recently had a rich boyfriend that went to jail for forgery that she's at least a little bit upset about, so it had probably been going on for at least a little bit.

& from what I've seen, she doesn't scab !! She is very much there trying to convince the others not to scab, compared to the other two who do Scab.

And last but definitely not least, Alex Christian, to finish out the trio of Buttons' !!!

UKsies Buttons is definitely very bright — his name comes from 'having all of his Buttons', and he's also probably one of the older newsies considering how he acts with other people (ex: stealing an apple with Ike, bringing Splasher some coffee after he doesn't get any from the nuns, encouraging Ike to give an apple to Tommy Boy), but he's also one of the more laid back Newsies (he steals like. twice. once with Ike & once with Crutchie).

But to go along with him being close with the other newsies, he still scabs !! He does give it first, though, conceding with Jacks speech.

And now, to compare them all:

I think that it's very interesting how they all sort've portrayed Buttons in similar ways, even if it's just in the background;

Marriott and UK both are very close with the other newsies, they're both big siblings to the other ones and they're both more responsible then some of the others — they also both steal! Marriott Buttons used to pickpocket before she became a newsie.

UK and Broadway both scab !! They both have that aspect of betraying the newsies whether it's personal or just something they had to do to survive, but they're probably both forgiven fairly quickly considering how comfortable everyone is with them during KoNY.

Marriott and Broadway are the least similar, in my opinion, but they are both very silly so good enough!!!

I'm having the thought that I won't be able to focus on work today since I'm not streaming. I'm having the thought that I keep making things weird with people and thats a form of pushing them away. I'm having the thought that I won't be able to figure out what it is about myself that makes me believe I'm so unlovable. I'm having the thought that nothing I do today can make me feel better and lighten up.

This morning was the same breakfast as yesterday which was lovely. I watched the second episode of the Mia and Me show, it's pretty bad but I'm still intrigued by it. Something about it feels cozy in a way, something about it gives me PS2 vibes.

I didn't stream today, I tried to do my work alone. I did just about as bad a job as yesterday in the sense that I wasted a lot of time goofing off even though I did get it all done within the time frame I absolutely needed to. I want to get better about conforming to my schedule when conditions aren't favorable. I can do it fine if everything is perfect. I figure part of being mature means you can't wait for just the right conditions for everything. I mowed the lawn real good before lunch and also split some wood. It's one of my weekly workouts until it all gets split.

Lunch was beef stew with pasta in it. I played some HOI4 pony mod and watched some Chris Chan documentary. When work time came around I told myself I'd be better about it than I was earlier in the day and I was. I did the request and moved onto personal stuff, getting it done with much less time wasted than before. I had meant to make up for the 20 minutes I missed on commissions but I didn't do that. After work I booted up Starfield and spent an ungodly amount of time in the ship editor just to get basically nowhere. I might stick to premade ships unless I get some inspiration to build my own.

I had asked Daisy if she wanted to do something new and interesting this evening which she agreed to. When the time came to hang out we both didn't know what to do. I was down to pick literally anything as long as we've never done it or hadn't for awhile. I have the bad habit of not being able to settle on anything when I know any choice would be fine as long as I stuck to it. She seems to have the same trouble figuring out what to do sometimes. I want to overcome this so I can not only stop being bored but so I can also maybe be a sort of activity leader for those that are also stuck. Sometimes all it takes is that one person who takes the leap into doing literally anything to kickstart others.

We ended up searching around Roblox for a little bit and peaked into this horse game that we determined was pretty bad. In hindsight I wish I had tried to do some actual RP of sorts, that would have been new and interesting. I think I was too afraid to try at the time or wondered if I could even keep up with something like that. She also showed me some EPCOT posters on pinterest before she headed upstairs where we played Sky briefly. She was super tired and went to sleep while I played more Starfield which felt very cozy. It's not often I commit my attention to something like I did with Starfield tonight.

Tonight I was noticing how I try to conserve energy a lot and also try to do things in the laziest way possible while calling it "efficient". I guess in some ways it is but I was thinking about the value in deliberately putting no cap on my energy use for the sake of doing everything to the best of my ability. It also helps to keep me from overthinking because it demands a lot of mental process as well.

Today I had also forgotten all about focusing on what I'm working for rather than what I'm working against. It was helping a lot to keep my eyes on the prize but I forgot that already. Perhaps tomorrow I'll remember.

A good thing I did today was committing my attention to Starfield in my free time. I really got invested and it felt nice. Also the commitment I had to making something fresh happen tonight even if it didn't completely work out.

Writing update:

Depa did not escape my wrath.

I'm finding that what's mostly happening is that I'm adding connective tissue between the stories to make the entire narrative more cohesive and add more character throughlines. A lot of themes are coming up so consistently, such as empathy and forgiveness, that are important (and Star Warsey) enough that I'll keep on bringing them to the forefront until they're finally paid off in Ben's decisions in Less Than Zero V3: Much More than Zero. Also somewhat hilariously, Ben's life has become a living nightmare of crashing other people's dreams. Haunting the narrative more like. Literally fucking haunting the narrative. Cody also has a predominant yet background character arc that is much more organized now. He's also way nuttier.

Next up is the Toxic Polycule story, which will likewise probably keep the same plot but will have to be revised heavily to fit in with the very new Rex and Ahsoka characterizations. Rex's first story set up a lot of new character throughlines that will have to be resolved in the polycule story. Thinking about it is already a little tiring I need to goof off with stupid shit somehow.

Most of the breaks I've been taking between stories have been chipping away at MMTZ. Ben is also much, much nuttier. Kind of concerned that my definition of 'stronger characters' is 'just, like, way fucking crazier' characters. I'm currently trying to figure out how explicit the metaphor for Indian residential schools should be. The OCs have also become extremely chaotic.

MMTZ is really going to be the single-handed reason why the story is going to take so long to come out. Text of excerpt under the cut.

The words didn’t permeate. The two figures barely permeated. They only noticed Ben as he walked further into the room, and they only stopped talking once Ben fell down onto the bed. He sat on the opposite side of Thirty and the handmaiden, feet firmly on the floor and trying half-heartedly to ground himself. Thirty was speaking again, and it took concerted effort to tune into what he was saying. 

“ - that bad? Because talking to rich and powerful ladies shouldn’t be that traumatic.”

“Did you ever go to boarding school?” The handmaiden asked. “You wouldn’t be saying that if you’d gone to boarding school.”

“Cannot be worse than my military boot camp. You should have seen the bullying. The hazing. It’s ridiculous.” Thirty contemplated a very serious matter. “And the child culling, of course. But it’s the hazing that leaves that scar, you know?”

The handmaiden nodded wisely. “We didn’t have child culling. But we did have systematic exclusion and shunning of girls we didn’t like.”

“Oh, god of suffering, the shunning!”

“I was quite good at it.”

Thirty gasped in delight. “You were a bully?”

“One woman’s bully is another woman’s freedom fighter,” the handmaiden said humbly. “I believe that it’s a political term.”

“Four year term?”

“Two, if you’re bullied hard enough.”

“We could be best friends if we tried, I think.” Thirty pulled at his collar, looking around the room. “Hey, is it getting kind of hot in here?”

It was, indeed, getting kind of hot in there. In Ben’s defense, he really was just trying to melt himself. Like a snowball on Tatooine: melted, absorbed, gone in only seconds. Ben wondered absently if this bed was capable of snapping a predator’s jaws and swallowing him whole. 

“Um, Ben? Is this supposed to happen? Do you have a loose wire or something?” A calloused finger poked Ben on the back. 

The handmaiden popped up at Thirty’s shoulder. “Do you need a hug?” 

“Dude,” Thirty said. “I’m not giving him a hug.”

“Well, I’m not doing it.” The handmaiden thought hard. “Cody gives good hugs…”

“He doesn’t seem like the hugging type. Like, I bet he nods proudly at you once every ten years. Rest of it’s just chasing that approval.”

“Cody gave me a hug after he killed my parents. It was quite nice of him.”

“Whoah!” Thirty said, impressed. “So you’re, like, secretly weird! Cool!” 

The stupid conversation was weirdly grounding. Ben focused on his breathing, twirling a mental knife in his hands and shearing off the overgrowing thorns and vibes that were worming into the cracks of his manda. Breathe with the flickers of the candle flame in your gut. 

Peel it away. Carve it out. Steal and scavenge. Fill it. Do whatever you have to, Ben. Control the emptiness. Don’t let it swallow you. You still have shit to do.

The finger poked him again. “Did the call with Lady Amidala really go that badly?”

And Ben - 

He straightened and turned around, smile plastered on his face. Thirty and the handmaiden leaned back a little. 

“Oh yeah, went great,” Ben said breezily. “Couldn’t sneak any codes in, but at least Padme knows I’m safe. I assume there’s a reason why you’re distracting this handmaiden from her work, Thirty?”

Thirty leaned to the side, towards the handmaiden. The handmaiden leaned to the side, towards him. In a very loud whisper, Thirty said, “He’s got the crazy eyes.”

“Temperature’s gone down,” the handmaiden observed. “Maybe crazy eyes are what sanity looks like for him.”

“Alright, now I believe he was raised by these people.”

Writing update

I should probably give an update because things been slightly whack. Roughly, in order:

Was having issues with my medication, and writing got really difficult. Wanted to write Naruto, could not. Continued writing that Jason Todd story because what am I going to do, not write?

Fix medication issues. Feel like I can write again. Open up literally almost fucking random word document, see that it was the first paragraph of the More Than Zero rewrite (the story from my Star Wars No Chip AU) that I never did.

Go nuts.

Sixty pages into doing the rewrite, I decide that actually this story cannot function at all if I don't stop writing it and go write an entirely different story, which is somehow necessary for the quality of this story. Time to write the one of the many other No Chip AU stories I never got around to writing.

Go nuts.

40k of the Neyo story now exists. It's good, mostly.

Realize at this point that I cannot post a 40k fic on Tumblr and that the complete series is now clicked into my mind as an anthology, which means that it needs to go on AO3.

For several different reasons, one of which is admittedly marketing, I would like the series to stand on its own, so I need to completely rewrite the Order 66 story to establish everything about the universe that the ordinary roleswap fics established.

Realize I've gone nuts.

Decide to completely rewrite the Order 66 story anyway, it is at least twice as long and basically completely different.

As I do this, I realize that now the Rex buildingsroman story doesn't work at all, so I need to cut one section of that and rewrite a portion of it as well.

I would also like to make some semi-significant changes to the Bly story.

I am currently in the state of going nuts and will continue to be going nuts until some undetermined point in the future, at which point I will post every single fic in one story on AO3. There will be a metanarrative.

Decide that I was completely correct in aggravating literally everybody by refusing to post this on AO3, because if I had posted it on AO3 then it would have been way more difficult to rewrite all of this. I also feel a lot more confident in the quality of the rewritten versions and have, fortunately, improved over the last two years as a writer.

Tonight, BuzzFeed Unsolved ends.

On one very good hand, Watcher exists. Ryan and Shane are business married and committed to making videos with each other for a good long time. I get to see them (almost) every week on Watcher Weekly Plus and/or in one of their weekly series videos. I’m truly spoiled for content from the two goofs who have consumed much of my fandom life for the last three (!) years. Plus, it’s good that BFU go out on a high note, and that it stops interfering with their new plans. I’m so excited to see where they go now that the BuzzFeed obligations are done.

On the other, deciding to watch a video about the Gardner Museum Heist in late May 2018 changed my life. And I’m sad that after tonight, it will be over.

Some of you already know this, but my journey into this fandom was not something I planned or even wanted. RPF fandoms were my original home when I was back on the livejournal a thousand years ago in college. I met many friends, some of whom I’m still friends with today. But in 2011, the worst thing that could ever happen to one of my favorite celebrities happened: Ryan Dunn, of Jackass fame, my first RPF ship, and whose message board I was a mod at, died. After that, and the heartbreak that was all my favorite bandom bands breaking up, I was done with RPF for my own health. I never begrudged it, of course, but I was protecting myself. 

Fandom in general was different too after Livejournal finally became totally unusable. Tumblr has its uses, but it’s much harder to make friends in my experience. Easy to follow funny, like-minded people, but not easier to get to know them without a lot of real effort. And my twitter is locked, so everyone I know over there are people I’ve known for years. So while I was still a very fannish person, I was doing a lot of it on my own. I have countless unfinished WIPs from different fandoms over the year as I fell deep into new and old canons alike. (A couple did get posted to AO3, but without betas or anyone I know reading them.) And there’s nothing wrong with that. I still had fun, consuming fic and fanart and daydreaming about my OTPs like everyone else. I figured this was just how it was now.

On March 30, 2018, I broke and dislocated my ankle.

It’s a dumb story, I fell on wet grass at a friend’s birthday party and I wasn’t even drunk. But that event kicked off the single worst year of my life. While I could still drive with my injury (it was my left ankle), I couldn’t do much outside of going to work. That meant missing my main social interaction every week, going to my local pop culture trivia night. (the bar it was at was not ADA compliant). I had gone to that trivia night every week for 8 years. It was my favorite thing in the world and I was good at it. I was one of the best players and the joy and pride and friends it brought me were immeasurable. To not have that to look forward to hurt almost as much as my ankle did. But I’d get back to it as soon as I could do stairs again, I had that to look forward to.

Until it was announced the bar it was hosted at was closing in two weeks and the host, whose career was taking off as a local morning radio DJ, didn’t have the time to find it another home. It was ending, the literal same day I got out of my cast and into a walking boot.

I did make it to that final trivia. But that loss still guts me, even now. 

It was around this time that I watched my first episode of BuzzFeed Unsolved.

Some of my twitter friends were watching it and I was desperate for something new and easy to play in the background while I was stuck on an air mattress in my mom’s living room. I liked it immediately, although I stuck to True Crime for awhile. I’d been really into ghost hunting shows back in college but had grown tired of them, so I was wary of that side of the show. But eventually, I decided fuck it and watched Bobby Mackey’s, one of the more notorious haunted places in America. I thought it was so novel. Who the hell made a ghost hunting show when one of them didn’t even believe in ghosts?

I devoured the series over the next few weeks, watching out of order and without Postmortems until I went back and watched those too. I was giddy with that new fandom excitement, especially over all the very fun and beautiful fanart I was seeing on my dash. The demon Shane stuff was my favorite, I loved that concept, what a brilliant idea for a story. 

So, I went to AO3. But I was still resistant to diving back into RPF, so I stuck to the demon Shane tag, hoping that was fantastical enough to keep that overinvestment at play. And that worked for awhile. I even started writing my own version of the demon Shane trope, whittling at it while my ankle finally began to strengthen. I was still mostly going at it alone, although my irl friends were lovely enough to listen to me blabber on about “my boys”. 

Then, one night on tumblr, I saw a link to a discord in the shyan tag. I was nervous, I’d never used discord and I was a lurker by nature at this point. But I was desperate to find people to talk to about these two goofballs. So I joined, fully expecting to lurk and dip after a few weeks. Spoiler alert: I did more than lurk. And now, countless fics read and 300,000 words written later, I’m still here.

For all the things I am grateful to BFU and Ryan and Shane for, for making me laugh, for being an even brighter spot a few months later in 2018 when my dad was dying, for entertaining me all through the pandemic and beyond, for launching Watcher on my birthday (really appreciate that one), nothing compares to the gratitude I feel for the community I’m apart of now. 

Having so many friends to talk to nearly every day for the past three years has been invaluable. Whether we’re talking about the boys or something else entirely, it doesn’t matter. We’re ghoul friends, bonded, just as much as the bravest believer and the funniest skeptic are. And they are why saying goodbye to the funniest ghost hunting show on YouTube won’t be devastating. It will be sad, bittersweet, but it’s not the end. Not for them or for us.

On Philza and Tommy

I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while but I just didn’t wanna rewatch ANY exile streams because they genuinely make me so depressed and anxious but I finally forced myself to rewatch the one where Phil visits Tommy. Or I say “rewatch”, I actually never saw the whole thing before, I kept popping in and out of the stream while it was live bc of the aforementioned anxiety and shit..

Anyway, I’ve seen arguments over the topic of whether Phil is a terrible person for not helping Tommy or not. And I wanted to offer my take on it. So I’m just gonna go through the arguments:

1: “Phil is Tommy’s dad and has a duty to look after him“

I’m not gonna spend too much time on this because for one thing it’s not really canon and for another, I actually don’t think it’s the relevant issue here. Even if Phil was Tommy’s dad, Tommy has already basically been living independently for a while. And even back when Phil and Will were still talking about the family relationships being canon, Phil said as much: that he doesn’t have authority over his boys, they’re independent people.

2: “Phil doesn’t even know Tommy and it’s unfair to ask him to look after a stranger”

I legitimately have no idea where this take came from or what it’s based on. I feel like it’s so obvious that they knew each other from before Phil even joined the SMP. Tommy recognises him right away (1), they act very familiar with each other, Phil immediately attacks Dream when Dream blows up Tommy’s house (2), Tommy tries to convince Phil to join NLM but Phil is torn because he’s friends with both Techno and Tommy (3), they plan to make their houses in NLM next to each other and Phil helps Tommy build his (4), Phil specifically gives Tommy one of the three friendship emeralds he has (5)... Also OOC Phil refers to himself as basically a father figure to Tommy (6).

The reason their relationship becomes colder is because Tommy doesn’t approve of Phil staying friends with Techno. I think this is made pretty obvious too. Tommy gets upset with Phil when he sees him hanging out with Techno (7) and when Phil comes to visit him in exile, Tommy immediately acts cold towards him and accuses him of being Techno’s friend before softening a bit when Phil gives him gifts (5).

3: “Phil didn’t help Tommy at all while he was in exile“

Oh shut up, watch reference video 5 again. He brought Tommy tons of useful shit, a stack of coal blocks, 8 iron blocks, diamond boots, how was he supposed to know that it would all get destroyed by Dream? When asked, he also helped Tommy with his projects at Logstedshire.

4: “Even if Phil isn’t Tommy’s father OR his friend, he still has a duty to save an abused kid”

Okay this is finally getting to the actual point.

So I wanna refer back to video number 5 up there on my references list again and I’m gonna go through that stream here:

- Ghostbur brings Phil over to meet Tommy

- Tommy is mad because Phil is friends with Techno

- Tommy gets distracted by Phil’s new clothes and the vision of Tubbo reappearing

- Phil gives Tommy a bunch of presents, including “Tommy Slippers“ (for the cold) and a friendship emerald from Techno. Tommy is excited about the slippers, somewhat apprehensive about the emerald until Phil assures him that it’s a gift from him to Tommy, not from Techno

- Tommy decides that Phil is his friend after all

- Dream shows up and acts all casual and friendly, Phil greets him politely but doesn’t interact much with Dream unless prompted to

- Tommy asks Phil and Ghostbur if they’re even real because he keeps seeing Tubbo

- Phil asks if Tommy has been drinking the sea water

- another vision of Tubbo, only Tommy and Ghostbur see him

- Ghostbur shows Phil around while Tommy tells Dream not to tell Phil about the beach party because it’s a surprise

- Tommy asks if the reason why Phil didn’t visit earlier was because there wasn’t a path and if the path made it easier for him and Phil says yes, because he didn’t actually know how to get there before

- More Tubbo hallucination shenanigans which I’m gonna cut out from now on, just assume that it keeps happening

- Phil tells Tommy not to drink the sea water, Tommy goes “I DID DRINK THE SEA WATER BECAUSE IT TOLD ME TO!“

- Tommy asks Phil (and also Fundy who showed up) to leave the VC so he can talk to Ghostbur and Dream alone (about the secret beach party plan)

- Tommy is happy about the fact that the path he made seems to be working and people are coming to visit him

- Dream notes that they aren’t even really hanging out with him so they might just be visiting Logsted, not him (which... Tommy literally asked them to leave them alone so they could plan, Dream is just blatantly trying to fuck with his head) and Tommy deflates and agrees that Dream is probably right

- Ghostbur invites Phil and Fundy to help decorate the beach (not telling them what for but it’s like super obvious that they’re planning a party) and they do

- all five of them work on the beach for a whole while and goof around until the end of the stream

So from Phil’s point of view Tommy is acting kind of cold towards him and doesn’t seem to particularly want him around (combined with the fact that he later doesn’t get an invite to the beach party that Tommy was obviously planning). Phil brought Tommy basic survival stuff and the slippers to keep him from getting cold, not knowing that all of that is going to get destroyed by Dream anyway. He seems a bit worried about the hallucinations but assumes it’s because Tommy’s been drinking sea water and tells him to stop doing that. He also notes that Tommy looks kind of rough but doesn’t push the issue.

Meanwhile Tommy is being manipulated by Dream into believing that Phil didn’t actually come to visit him, even as Phil is literally visiting him, with named gifts and everything. And he’s already doubting if Phil is even really present because he keeps seeing Tubbo who isn’t actually there so Phil could just as well be a hallucination too, or he could easily be convinced later that Phil was a hallucination.

Basically Phil sees that Tommy is having a hard time but there’s no obvious sign of anything being wrong besides him not taking very good care of himself and feeling lonely. Tommy says he hasn’t been sleeping and that he’s been drinking sea water (which is probably a joke but anyway). Him and Dream seem to be very friendly with each other, they even keep having all these secret chats that Tommy is telling Phil to leave for.

So.... assume this is your friend who you’ve recently had a bit of a falling out with. What kind of conclusions would you draw and what would you do? Honestly, yes, Tommy’s condition seems pretty worrying, but everything just points to him being lonely and depressed about being exiled, which isn’t really something Phil can easily fix other than just visit him more. But then Tommy gives really mixed signals about whether he actually wants Phil there or not (which is because he’s planning the party but Phil doesn’t know that) and then when Phil finds out about the party he doesn’t get an invite to it (because Dream stole the invites but, again, Phil doesn’t know this). So Phil just kinda has to decide whether to go there uninvited and presumably unwanted, or just vibe and wait to hear from Tommy. Meanwhile he has stuff to do with Techno who DID invite him to hang out.

Also Tommy seems to be doing better, he’s very excited about his beach, he’s excited about the fact that he’s getting more visitors (not just Phil but Fundy too) and he’s convinced that there will be more now that there’s a path. So as far as Phil is concerned, it seems like things are getting better and Tommy might end up doing okay after all, despite everything

As a sidenote also, Phil is a bit of a hermit, right? I feel like that’s fair to say about his character. He doesn’t mind hanging out with people but to him living alone in the wilderness isn’t a bad deal at all. Obviously he understands that Tommy is not like him and needs company but you can see how he might not see the situation as all that urgent. And you can argue about what Tommy’s canon age actually is but he’s been living independently and taking care of himself like an adult during his entire time on the server, this shouldn’t really be that different. Obviously the fact that he’s exiled is bad and upsetting for him but there’s nothing Phil can do about that either. He doesn’t have control over L’Manberg or Dream.

And I just wanna point out that all of this is exactly how abusive relationships work, right? Dream is deliberately distancing Tommy from everybody he knows and making him think that Dream is the only one who cares about him. And that shit can be really hard to pick up on. It might just seem like your friend is becoming kind of distant and has different friends now. And I’ll tell you, even if you DO see the signs, it’s really hard to decide when or how to intervene, or if you’re just paranoid about it.

It’s easy to say Phil should do this or that when you’re watching Tommy’s streams and KNOW what’s happening, but try to put yourself in Phil’s shoes for a second and actually think about what you’d do in a situation like this. Also please do so while assuming that Phil is a real person with his own life to live too.

You can say that he should have been more worried and more suspicious of Dream and gone to see Tommy anyway, that’s fair. But that’s a normal human mistake and also something pretty much everybody else should have done too by that logic. And Tommy was not being very receptive to help because he was being manipulated by Dream. Honestly this was probably something where Tommy needed to figure out for himself to break free. Which he did. (And speaking from a narrative perspective: that was the best possible ending to that arc. Tommy finding his own strength and willpower again, on his own.)

Kiki!!! I hope you're doing well! I need to catch up to your fics because I am missing your writing desperately. You are such a powerhouse at prose. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ) If I could eat your writing like a cupcake I would. I'd eat several and never get full.

Literally hope you have been having a great month and also wonderful start of September. Phew. I can't believe the year is almost over. Wasn't it 2020 like a day ago it seems? I can't wait for labor day weekend because that means more for me to goof around and new boot goof and hopefully update some chapters and post some stories. I miss the summer already.

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

I get mine from either: a) music, lyrics, a piece of literature or b) I bounce ideas around between my friends and I. We literally just have a small three person council where we just adlib to one another until something sticks. Three heads is better than one.

15. What’s your favorite time to write?

I usually write when it's too late and too dark. For whatever reason my brain functions great when I'm not taking my naps and I have the where with all to be awake at ungodly hours. My best ideas come to me then.

77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction?

I just find it to be so fun to explore. The characters are already set in stone, so it's really up to the writers or whoever to bend the characters to their will. Whether it be to shape them to become less than what they are in canon or to build them up and give them more than what the writer gave them. (I am a chronic side character lover and all of them either die or become nonexistent to the story). Alexa, play the world’s saddest violin.
