Déjà vu

The cabal were becoming a widespread menace. Guardians were driven from their home, wounded and lightless. Valiksis had been wary of them, but not fully against helping them if she thought they could be trusted. Her twins were especially curious of them. There was even a red-haired warlock that understood her language that stayed for a short while before being forced to move on and find her friends.

It was becoming dangerous to stay, though. After the guardians passed, the Cabal began to show up. At first, the patrols were small and easy to evade, but after some time, she and Nevsis were being forced to fend them off occasionally. This such time was the worst fight she’s seen in a while. Her children were older, old enough to move and climb on their own, but nowhere near old or brave enough to stand their ground against the new enemy. They were the equivalent of a twelve-year-old human child, though their lives on this planet were nowhere near as long. They aged quickly though and grew mature so fast it made her head spin sometimes. 

Valiksis fired her pistol at some of the warhounds that hunted them while they circled, and her twins were quick to climb the walls of the nearby ruin to get some higher ground. Her son was bleeding from a gunshot wound in his arm and was being helped up by his sister when Valiksis turned her attention to Nevsis, who was also firing at the warhounds, as well as their leader. Of all the ranks, she hated the gladiators the most. They were reckless, fearless, and deadly when they got too close. Which worried her, because Nevsis was practically going toe-to-toe with it while she handled the warhounds.

She fired her gun three more times, watching one of the warhounds fall and staining the nearby snow in its blood. It left two more, and another one fell easily enough. To her dismay, though, her gun clicked as she tried to fire again. Realizing she needed to reload, she cursed and jumped out of the way as the last beast tried to jump at her. Her children screamed fearfully, and before she could even get up, sharp fangs dug into her leg. Valiksis cried out as the beast tried to shake her, causing her blood to stain the snow as well. 

Her fight or flight instincts took over then, and with a shout, her primary hands came down, punching the beast on the snout and luckily it released her with a yelp. As a last resort, she kicked it with her good leg and finally managed to let her gun charge up again for another few shots. Three were fired, and the monster fell just like its other pack mates did. 

Once she was sure it was dead, she looked up to make sure her children were okay, but they were staring wide-eyed in horror past her. A sudden feeling of dread came over her then and she turned to see the wounded cabal gladiator falling to the ground. Nevsis had won, but-

Her eyes widened when she saw the extent of the damage. During her fight with the war hound, her pained screaming had distracted him for but a critical moment. The Cabal’s weapon had dug into his side, slicing through armor, skin and bone alike with one powerful blow. The wound found its way into his side, in an upward strike that flowed into his chest. She watched as he pulled the cleaver from his body, causing more blood to drip into the snow. 

He took three steps toward her, and fell, but Valiksis was already getting to her feet. She limped over quickly, hoping that it was just exhaustion that made him so weak. 

“NEVSIS!!” She was halfway there when she stumbled, but quickly regained her footing and managed to limp over to the downed archon. Tears were already starting to flow as she sank to her knees and placed her primary hands on his face. His eyes looked at her and it was obvious that he was struggling to breathe. 

“No.. No! No! Nevsis don’t…” She stopped when his hand came up to rest on her own face, brushing away some tears with a thumb. 

“Val.. you need to… before more-”

“If you think I’m leaving you, you’re crazy!” More tears fell, she couldn’t stop them. All of her hands clinged to his damaged armor as she sobbed. It was the situation with Halsis all over again and she wasn’t sure how much more her heart could take. “I can’t… Please… I can get you patched up. We can rest for as long as you need!" 

He only smiled, taking one of her hands and wheezing a bit. "It hit my lungs.. At least.. I’ll die with you.. in my last memory…" 

She stared at him for a long few seconds before she leaned down, burying her head against his neck, her whole body wracked with sobs. He was dying, and there was nothing she could do about it. She was so powerless and weak. Valiksis knew she needed to take her children and flee before more cabal showed up, but she didn’t have the will nor the strength to move. 

"You can’t… You can’t leave me…” She sobbed against his neck, and she felt him purr softly as she clutched at his body, begging fruitlessly for him to live. His breathing grew worse with each passing second. 

“I’ll still be with you…” He whispered. He grunted, shifting a bit so that his head was resting in her lap, against her stomach. “I will live on.. through them… But you have to live, too… Eskis and Helsis need you…”

“But I need you! I can’t.. I’m not… I’m not strong enough…" 

He hums deeply at that and she looks down at him as the light starts to fade from his eyes. His look said it all. He thought she was plenty strong enough. She survived through so much before she even met him. She would have to go on and look after her children. Tears were falling from his own eyes now as she leaned down and pressed their heads together. His life was fading fast, and neither of them could stop it. 

"Valiksis…”

She looked down at him, a hand came up to stroke her face again. He seemed glad that his last moments were spent looking at her, even though he would have preferred it any other way if it were possible. She sniffed, sobbing as his last words reached her. His hand fell from her face, landing in the snow as his last breath left in a slow sigh.

“I’ll wait for you…”
