If you want more context on how Young Avengers (2013) is not only a product of its time, but is in direct conversation with the cultural moment that comics, as a medium and an industry, were occupying, I would recommend Adrienne Resha's article The Blue Age of Comic Books. A version of the article is available here.

Reshas' theoretical "Blue Age" is largely defined by the emergence of digital comics, and the resulting changes in audiences and demographics. This is underscored by the evolving relationship between fandom and mainstream social media and the genre's metatextual relationship with both its readers and the spaces they populated. Simultaneously, there was a renewed focus on diversity and inclusion, although the material impact may have left something to be desired.

Young Avengers was part of the first wave of Marvel Now!, a branding relaunch that lasted from 2012 to 2015, which in many ways defined the first, and formative, portion of the Blue Age. The book holds obvious aspirations towards a characteristic notion of diversity which teeters on the edge of self-conscious tokenism, and the creators were directly plugged into their tumblr-based audience in a way that seems almost inconceivable in today's landscape. Between that, the notably organic (for the time) use of social media formats and vernacular, and a surprisingly clear grasp on junior millennial voices, the book both courted and gave birth to a very specific fandom environment where titles like Ms. Marvel and Champions would later thrive.

To me, Young Avengers perfectly encapsulates the opening moments of the Blue Age. It precipitates so much of what comics, and comic book spaces, would become over the next five to eight years, and experiencing it first hand really informed my perspective on both the industry and fandom. But the book also suffers for its liminality-- tonally and stylistically, it doesn't quite fit into people's nostalgic image of either the Blue Age or the post-9/11 Modern Age which preceded it, and the characters-- now on the verge of legal drinking age-- resist the conventions of an archetypical "teen team."

It's a weird book that sits in an interstitial period for the characters, the genre and its creators, being Team Phonogram's singular dip into work-for-hire supeheroics before returning to making creator-owned, pup-infused urban fantasies at Image. As somebody who loves reading and learning about the medium, I think it's a really valuable and I've learned so much about comics just from poring over this series. You'll never make me hate it, but even if you don't like it, there's a lot to gain from being open to objective, academic conversation!

So at first, this was a reblog of a different post, but I am now making it an original one for greater reach. Be warned that it's going to be quite long.

So, we all know and love the promotional comics of our Wii boxers, like this one about Glass Joe:

You might have never questioned its origin, and neither did I when I first encountered it a year ago. I just assumed that Nintendo officially published it in a guide, because that's what every source about them that I've read was implying.

But then I learnt that these translations aren't official at all. They were apparently done by the Tumblr user @boink-the-joiner in 2013, whose blog seems to be unfortunately deleted.

And then I was informed of the existence of this image by my friend @fan-mans (Charlie):

He said he originally found it on Tumblr, though he didn't give me the link to where he got it from. (It happens to be included at the very start of this post.)

But this supposed "original version" seemed fishy to me for several reasons:

If this is the "original" Japanese version, and no "official" English one exists that was published alongside it, why are the sound effects written in the Latin alphabet?

Why is the authorship at the bottom in English? And isn't that the exact same font as in the well-known English version?

Why is it read left-to-right? Shouldn't it be flipped from the English version? Wouldn't it make more sense for Mac to punch him with his right arm and for Joe's hair to be more often on his right side than the left, and to first put on the left boxing glove, and hold the coffee cup in his right hand?

Why is there a red rectangle in the middle right?

Charlie said that all of this was because Nintendo was catering to an American audience, but never actually published the guide outside of Japan. (Apart from the red rectangle, which was apparently a part of the website that image originally came from, but he didn't have a link to that either.) I didn't believe it at first, because it just seemed like an incredibly stupid pair of decisions to me.

But today, I found this webpage. It's a blog post talking about strategy books for Nintendo games, and includes this image:

This is it! This is proof that Nintendo printed the comic to be read left to right in the original Japanese version!

There was that little bit of doubt in my mind though. What if the copy that shows the actual pages of the comic is in English? The quality is so low...

...but the kana here are clear enough.

That isn't the end of the story. Shortly afterwards, I came across this webpage:

THIS IS THE ORIGIN OF THAT JAPANESE VERSION OF THE JOE COMIC ABOVE! The red rectangle was, indeed, holding up a textbox.

Anyway, the full website can be found here, and includes a few other materials, such as this part of a guide on Title Defense Von Kaiser:

Sadly, the website only includes Joe's comic, and I haven't found the original Japanese versions of anyone else online, so currently, you'd have to own the guide to know what they look like.

Also, out of curiosity, I decided to use the Wayback Machine to see if the site has ever been modified, but it just wasn't archived there at all. Not even a single snapshot. So I went ahead and preserved what it currently looks like.

The website itself seems to belong to the company that published the guide, Enterbrain, a division of Kadokawa Future Publishing, which is a part of the Kadokawa Corporation. The names "Ebten" and "Famitsu" seem to be related to it as well, but I have yet to figure out exactly how. The full Japanese title of the book is パンチアウト！！完全クリアーガイドブック, and its ISBN is 978-4-7577-5067-8. At least according to these listings.

Not all questions about the comics have been answered. For instance, we still aren't quite sure why Nintendo (or Enterbrain, anyway) decided to flip them. And our translator Boink had to have the copies of all of the Japanese comics, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to translate them! What if they are reachable somewhere else, and we can ask them if they still have the original scans?

More information might come as I (and hopefully others) research more.

Well it's been a while hasn't it? After everything that's gone on and my twitter suspension back in December, I've just decided to take a step back and focus on my personal life. Spending less time online, focusing on my job, that kinda boring shit that adults do.

But I have (slowly) and (only when I can) been working on shit. Mostly my Undertale creepypasta, UNDERTALE: The Garden. I'm sure some people remember that… but not many probably do. So I thought that since it's The Figure’s (formally Flower Child’s) birthday, I thought I'd show some stuff off.

So what is UNDERTALE: The Garden? Well.. UNDERTALE: The Garden is a story about an Undertale fan game that had been lost to time. The story focuses on the narrator finding an old and unfinished version of a fan game titled UNDERTALE: The Garden that had started its development fairly shortly after the original game’s demo had come out back in 2013. Created by an anonymous tumblr user who went by Tokumei, the game was originally meant to expand on the small amount of lore of the demo, adding more areas to the ruins, giving a new interpretation and backstory to the world, and much more. However the game went radio silent after a few years of development hell and Tokumei had not been seen since then.

Now years later, the narrator finds a gamejolt page with a familiar game on it. Excited to play it, they decided to discuss their findings on a tumblr blog. As well as archive any assets, information about development, and songs they can get their hands on. The narrator eventually finds out the game has much more to it than it was originally leading on…

There's a lot of things I have planned for the story that I don't wanna get into here (don't wanna spoil things before they come to light) but I've been working on making the actual world of The Garden much different than the original game. I've been taking an NES Godzilla approach for worldbuilding where the game just looks so vastly different from its original state using real life caves as well as Christian and Muslim imagery and cultures for inspiration for everything.

But now the main attraction of the au, The Figure. She's definitely changed since you first met her 2 years ago. Instead of going to exes and helping them, she's now someone who simply wishes to be left alone. Staying in her world trying to make it as perfect as she sees it.

My IRL ex who lives abroad now is dating my online friend who also lives there and I am deceiving them, AITA?

My ex (Fred) was my childhood best friend, we grew up together in the same conservative society, people expected to see us marry since we were kids, all that jazz. At 18, we both moved away and kept up LDR. Moving meant big changes of course, I was in a huge city and I had internet access for the first time. I became a BTS fan in 2013, I started creating and reading a lot. I joined tumblr, made friends from all over the world. I was being radicalized rapidly, and I figured out I was bi too. My world was suddenly a million times bigger.

He however, didn't change much. He was scientific minded unlike most people here and his friends were all STEM kids but they were still functionally right leaning. He was racist when it came to BTS or East Asians in general. He was ignorant and happy to ignore queer existence, he used to say things like queer people needed to be shown the right path. We were turning out to be quite the opposites. Eventually we broke up. He was heartbroken, he tried to drag me back in many times and I avoided him like plague. I managed to ditch him completely when we were about 23. He left for USA to study.

Around the same time I befriended one of my closest online friends, Daphne. We lived in the same state but she was always traveling so we never got to meet. We're both hellsite veterans and keep our identities under lock & key so we don't know our real names or exact place of work, but we know each other's deepest kinks and childhood traumas, and stories about our exes. We both had the same kind of interests, politics, and fandoms, we're both bisexual. I've also come out as a trans man a few years ago and I go by a masculine name online, can't transition IRL. Daphne's known me since my girl era. Daphne left for USA last year for her Masters.

Now the wild part, by some twist of fate, Daphne met Fred who's also working on his Masters in an adjacent field. It is by no means a niche subject and USA is the fourth largest country, they still found each other. He sang in our first language at some party, he's very hot, and... he's into BTS like her. Wild. So they're now dating.

They started following each other on twitter and he followed a bunch of her friends including Me! We have exchanged pleasantries and while on his account he has his real name and location, mine is a mixed bag account with my fake name and my (sfw) queer creations all over it.

I know who He is but he doesn't know who I am, he thinks I'm just one of Daphne's dudes, and Daphne doesn't know that she's dating my ex who she had promised to drop into the Challenger's Deep (joke). My reasoning for hiding the truth is-- It's still not safe for me to be out IRL and he can mess it up. I remember his bigotry, I hate him, I have every right to avoid him and here that means not revealing my identity. But it's been years so maybe he has changed, and Daphne is my friend. So, I feel like a massive ahole for not telling her at least. At the same time she really did hate my racist homophobic right leaning ex a lot, so knowing the truth will make things awkward and I don't want to lose my friend.

So, there you have it. AITA?

BTW, no I'm not into BTS ships or reader insert fantasies, that's not what I create. I know someone would ask about it so there. I'm also Not attracted to Daphne, if I was I'd have asked her out straight away, I don't play around about my crushes.

So I was thinking about it… why sterek

I’ve shipped a lot in my time. From the classics like spirk and destiel, to the straight vampire diaries nonsense, from murder husbands to buddy to name a very small few. They all hold weird little places in my heart and mind but they fade and as I flow in and out of fandoms I move on to the next hyperfixation. But sterek just keeps sticking around.

It’s an old ship for me. If you go on my ao3 all the way back to 2013 you’ll see my first ever book mark was a sterek fic. That fic is still a comfort fic for me today and is something I read when my anxiety is uncontrollable.

It was something I read late in 2022 when the reality of the pandemic and the last few years hit me hard and got me back into Teen Wolf so hard it actually pushed me out of the supernatural hole the start of the pandemic put me in.

I’ve always been a shipper and I have my ride or dies, my OTPs and Ot3s, and so on and so forth, but fandom has always been weird for me. I started young and witnessed the birth in Tumblr and ao3, as a tween my taste can only be described as pure trash* Affectionate * but as I got older, like most things in life, my taste changed. And though I still love me some hot garbage, I engage with it differently than that little 12-year-old who thought werewolves and vampires were cool no further explanation necessary.

Now I’m an academic, a librarian, who actually studied critical lit analysis, book studies, and religion. Who spent years learning how to dissect prose and poetry to look beyond text in an professional setting. And though I don’t regret it and it has led to some fun changes in the way I engage with fiction it also kinda ruined the fun engagement I had with things back in the day when baby me bookmarked that first fic.

I need more from my characters now, more from my fandoms and it has led me away from and into the arms of content that I never saw coming. (Looking at you Danny phantom phandom) I needed depth or the potential for depth that some shows just didn’t lend themselves to cleanly enough to satisfy me and yet… sterek persisted.

One of my problems is I didn’t really engage with the fandom when the show was airing and only watched a few season sporadically until recently, so I wasn’t there when things were forming organically. It has left me out of step with the primary directions fan content creators have taken with the ship and the directions they took, though fun and interesting, aren’t really my usual thing.

I hate the infantilization of stiles and other teen wolf characters like Isaac. I generally hate infantilization of adults, hyper feminization of certain types of characters and so on and so forth and it has to do with my own gender stuff, but I usually avoid it in fanfiction. I am also not a huge fan of modern werewolf romance erotica. I have a lot of opinions on real supernatural mythology and legends and I don’t like the anthropomorphism that shows up a lot in werewolf stories. Not that I haven’t read some amazing takes on werewolf lore, especially in the Teen Wolf fandom but I’m speaking generally. I’m also not a fan of pack mom stiles (again my own gender stuff) and though I think Scott’s inconsistent character and writing throughout the show lens him to be whatever your fic needs to be (best friend, hype man, wingman, idiot, genius, villain, so on and so forth) I don’t like a lot of the 'Scott sucks just because' fics. I don’t like the hate in the fandom around that. I also don’t like the hypermasculine depictions of Derek in a lot of fics and on and on. I have read a lot of TW and sterek and by all accounts, it should be a fandom I wouldn't personally engage with this much. Yet for all that, I have found there is an exception to every trope I hate, every hard line i draw for myself, because the fic was just so good. For every dozen or so fics that seem to tell me that this isn’t the fandom for me, there is that one amazing thing that says ���No! This is exactly where you wanna be”.

Like I said, I need more from my fandoms now a days and most of what that boils down to is plausible deniability. I need enough gaps in the narrative to fill them in myself, but with enough connective pieces that everything can make sense when put together. The fatal flaw of telling without showing, which allows people to extrapolate out what they want from certain things -all the subtext with none of the text - is exactly where my degree comes in handy.

And sterek well… I think what it is for me as a shipper is the inconsistencies. That is kind of why I still ship it so far and for so long. It's the fact of why was Stiles in Derek's dream at the end of 3b? We can talk about all the things with him being his anchor and the grasping at straws that we as shippers all love to do but the narrative fact is they did not spend that much time on screen together or even saying they were doing things off-screen together. That leads us to a lot of whys. Why were they together at the beginning of season two talking about the alpha pack? Why were they in certain situations in season four that ld them to work so well? What happens in all of this dead time? What happens in season six? We see stiles in episode one be like "Oh my God Derek is a mass murderer wanted by the FBI" and at the end of the season, they've apparently driven and or flown back to California together, apparently spent some time together. They're not on the run from the FBI so that got cleared somehow, stiles isn't limping so his foot healed. There's so much dead time like that throughout the show so when scenes happen like the hand on Derek's shoulder after the death of Boyd you're left thinking that's kind of off, we haven't seen any interactions with them that would show that they have that kind of deep solemn relationship where comforting him would make sense.

The show notoriously has a terrible timeline, but all that does is fuel the fact that we don't know how much time any of these characters are really spending off-screen together. We can only assume that it happened in this weird dead time. This is why somehow Derek's view of Stiles in his head is like a calm stable dependable figure who can help him talk through an issue. This is why they always gravitate towards each other in fights. This is why they work so well together in a crisis. Like we have to assume that happened before which is stupid and I know it's so much reaching, but in my little brain, it's the only way that makes all of this random shit fit together- so I gotta ship it. Obviously, the real-world explanation is inconsistent writing plus putting space between them once the writer stopped wanting people to ship it, but because you get all of these disjointed scenes where they're too intense for what we've been previously seeing there is some type of disconnect here -what is that? and if you're looking at the show, not as a work of fiction, but as a narrative, what else are we gonna do then assume that they have spent way more time emotionally connecting than we have seen on the screen.

And for me that’s everything I want in a ship, that ability to play and extrapolate random events and ask, okay now how would these all fit! And that’s what spawns great ideas and stories and art and why I ship it, dispute the fact that it really shouldn't work for me personally.

I think it’s why a lot of people still stop sterek despite the fact that the attitude towards it and the show has shifted a lot and in many different ways in the last decade.

Sorry for the rant, I’ve been thinking about this for days and had to get it out there. I hope I didn’t offend anyone. I truly love the Teen Wolf fandom and everything it’s done and everything it created and I’m so happy to be able to engage with it.

Halfway Gone

inspired slightly by the tags on this tumblr post. we never meet katie and kendall’s dad in the show, but i do remember seeing fan theories about him being a deadbeat. and well. i ran with that. title comes from halfway gone by lifehouse, which is a total knight family song imo.

The first time Katie sees her dad as a 17 year old, she doesn’t know it’s him. They’re back in Minnesota for a benefit concert, one of the few times Big Time Rush has reunited since their official breakup in 2013.

She’s annoyed about having to leave Los Angeles, and she stormed out of the house, trying to get away from the petty argument she struck up with her mom.

She’s on the corner of University Ave and Dale St N, when she sees him. A man, tall with brownish blonde hair, and piercing green eyes.

His nose has the same hook as Kendall’s. He’s dressed in a suit. One of the ones that Griffin wears - an expensive brand.

He looks familiar, she thinks. Her eyes trail over his face, trying to figure out how. They cross to opposite sides of the road, and after she lands on the other side of the crosswalk, she watches as he makes his way north.

She doesn’t understand how significant this is until three weeks later.

Three weeks later, she receives a letter in the mail. They are back in California. She doesn’t think of anything as she grabs a butter knife from the kitchen drawer, and slices the seal open.

The letter drops out, along with a baby photo of her. She knows this photo. It’s one that her mom has a copy of in her wallet. Kendall has another in his baby box for her.

She’s tiny, maybe six months old. She’s sitting on the carpet of their old home, dressed in a frilly white and pink dress. She’s grinning at the camera. Kendall had told her that he was the one to take it. He said that she wanted to crawl into his lap but he distracted her so he could get the picture.

She stares at the picture for a moment before turning her attention to the letter. It’s written on loose leaf paper, clearly ripped out of a notebook.

Dear Katie, it starts. She scans the words, her eyes beginning to water up. It’s her dad writing, her brain informs her.

He’s asking about her. About how she is doing. About Kendall. About their mom. About how she likes California. If she misses him.

How can she? He left when she was barely a year old. She has no real tangible memories of him.

He’s just a name on her birth certificate. A figure in the back of some family photos. A glimpse.

She can feel one teardrop rolling down her cheek as she shoves the paper onto the table, grabbing the photo and placing it on top. She can’t look at it anymore.

She wishes she hadn’t in the first place.

A month after the letter, her mom gets an email. It’s from her dad asking if she received it. Katie isn’t there when her mom gets it, but when she gets back from school, Jennifer is sitting in the living room.

“Your dad sent you a letter?” She asks, as Katie struggles to get her Vans off. Katie shrugs, letting her hair fall over her shoulders as she finally gets her sneakers off, walking into the kitchen.

She opens the fridge, biting down on her lip to keep her mouth shut.

“Katie.” Her mother says, and she sighs, turning around to face her. “Yeah?”

“Your dad sent you a letter. And you didn’t think to tell me?”

“I figured you wouldn’t want to know.” A lie, and she knows it, her mom knows it too. Jennifer gives her the look she perfected with the boys, the one that shows that she’s not impressed and won’t be backing down about it.

“I’m your mother. I deserve to know if your dad is in contact with you.” Katie shakes her head.

“I’m not in contact with him. He sent me a letter. I did not reply.”

“Why not?” Jennifer asks, and Katie snorts. “I haven’t needed him since I was one. Why would I need him now?”

Her mom goes silent. Katie stares at her, then at her purple sock coloured feet. “He’s still your dad Katie.” Her mom says, sighing as she gets up and crosses over to Katie.

Her hands are cupping Katie’s face. Thumbs gently rubbing her upper cheek.

“If you want a relationship with him, I won’t be mad.” Katie shakes her head. “I don’t need one. I have you.” Jennifer sighs again, pressing a quick kiss against Katie’s forehead.

“I’ll keep his email for you. If you change your mind.”

The thing is, Katie already knows she won’t.

William Grossman

- Age: 20

- Height: 5’10

- Weight: 115

- Sexuality: Homosexual

- Personality: Will is .. lazy. A bit of a bum. however he is trying to work on it, especially now that he’s in the institution. he’s motivated to make something out of himself. He’s outgoing but awkward. He’s tried to make friends several times and 90% of the time he gets jumped. Just for some retrospective, the combined population of the underworld only has a collective 20% of humans. 8% of which are those 24 and younger. So, when will met Robin, he was skeptical at first. but they quickly became best friends, and even consider themselves platonic soulmates. (much to jacks dismay)

- Friends: Jack, Robin, Frankie (acquaintance)

- Enemies: Will doesn’t really have any enemies, except for the obvious which is Isaac.

- Apperance: William is a blonde, borderline ginger with blue eyes. He’s got stubble with shaving bumps on his jaw. He tends to wear baggier clothes, lots of hoodies and big jackets. Also of course, his iconic mask. Will is pretty lanky, with some muscle.

Laughing Jack

- Age: ???

- Height: 8”2

- Weight: 215

- Sexuality: who even fucking knows bro 😭 (aroace)

- Personality: He literally just doesn’t give a fuck. Jack is extremely laid back, unserious. He doesn’t not take anything seriously which is very annoying to those around him (will). However, Jack is always masking. He despises talking about his feelings and never opens up. Ever. He’s a prankster, I mean he’s a clown cmon. it’s in his nature. He’s never not pulling some sort of scheme. Which unfortunately, has given him a damaged reputation. Due to this,jack has trouble finding good paying jobs.

- Friends: Will, Robin.

- Enemies: Isaac, Jason, Frankie(frank HATES jack with every fiber of his being.), Leviathan, Asmodeus.

- Appearnce: he keeps his canon design. I’ve changed nothing about it. Maybe his height?

Frankie The Undead

- Age: Frankie was born in 1910. He died in 1947. In this universe, present time is 2013. So, technically frankie is a 103 years old. However, he’s physically 30-40. Mentally, he’s much older.

- Height: 6’1

- Weight: 225

- Personality: Frankie is very blunt. Forward. He speaks his mind and doesn’t give a fuck what you or anyone else thinks. Unless you’re beezlebub, mammon, [REDACTED]. Also, if frankie has a liking towards someone, he won’t actually start being friendly with you until he feels comfortable. Took his seven months to warm up to Tony. It’s even worse when he feels romantic feelings towards anyone.

- Friends: Tony, Crosseye, Steven, Ray, (basically his ‘gang’, they all work for Beezlebub.) Lorraine (ehh..)

- Enemies: Mammon. Beezlebub (eventually), Tony (eventually).

- Appearance: Frankie also doesn’t stray too far from his cabin design. However he isn’t as lanky, and has more of a dad bod with broader shoulders. He wears the same clothes, still has green skin with the two different colored eyes. He has stitches all over his body, and one that goes across the left side of his face.

Avril Robin Anderson

- Age: 19

- Height: 5’4

- Weight: 103lbs

- Personality: Robin is a sweetie. She’s very outgoing, caring, and open minded. However it’s too much for her own good. She’s very naive with society and how it works, since she was raised in a secluded household. Will tends to keep her out of harms way, as she does with him. She’s fearless. Robin will stick up to anyone.

- Friends: Will, Jack.

- Enemies: None.

- Appearnce: Robin has dark brown skin, And dark brown hair, butterfly locks with red highlights. She wears dirty oversized overalls, and a cropped ripped red, white, and black tie dye top. She pairs this with various belts, bracelets, and dirty red converse. She has green eyes and a scar across her nose bridge.

Lorraine Marie Warren

oh boy. so, if anyone reading this used to follow my old blog, you’ll know how lorraine’s character was. and she is.. very different now.

Personality: Lorraine has.. changed. To put it short, lorraine is white trash. She’s very outspoken, opinionated, and forward. Much like frankie, she speaks her mind when she wants. (raging alcoholic) She doesn’t care what you think. Lorraine currently lives in the slums of the underworld, where mostly humans live. She lives with her grandfather gerald, her younger brother lawrence, and her five children. However, despite everyone’s negative perception of lorraine, she’s actually very kind, and a great listener.

Friends: Frankie (kinda), Forenzik.

Enemies: Beezlebub, Mammon, Multiple Gangs, And a bunch of random others.

Appearance: Lorraine’s appearance has not changed. She wears black flare jeans, brown boots, a white turtleneck with. rosary around her neck. her right eye is red, and her left brown. She has pale skin, and a mole underneath her left eye. Her hair is a chocolate brown, short cut. She has eyebags and a ‘birthmark’ of a cross on her forehead.

omg the screenshot on the left is from 2013. i don't have any earlier screenshots although i started posting my sims even before 2013. this was a celebrity sim i had made of male model rj king who was all over tumblr back then. i remember being so proud of that sim, at the time lol 🥺

i've always been a cas simmer, never a builder or gameplayer.

on the right is a headshot of my recent mortimer goth sim. i have a better graphics card now, gshade, and i've learned how to use my sliders a lot better 😆 with practice i've developed a better sim aesthetic and a better photoshoot/lighting setup.
