This is what Gender Ideology & Queer Theory does with Sex and Gender
The Future Of Autism Politics PART 2: Neuro Queer Theory, Neuro Affirming Care, Identity Clinics and Big Pharma
Using Autism as a lens I dissect Gender Ideology and Queer Theory...
...
Comparing how Gender has been theorised as performative in Queer Theory, I present to you Neuro Queer Theory, which states neurotypes are performative.
In Queer Theory, gender is understood as performative. That is, gender is not something one is, but something one does through repeated acts that align with cultural norms and expectations. In this view, one's biological sex is often considered secondary to the social behaviours and performances that come to define one's gender. Gender becomes a social construct that is enacted rather than a direct reflection of biological traits. This deconstructs the idea of a fixed relationship between one's body (biological sex) and one's social identity (gender).
If we apply this same framework to neurotypes, the question becomes: What if autism, and neurotypicality were also viewed as performative, rather than strictly tied to biological or neurological markers?
In much the same way that queer theory deconstructs the binary of male/female, this idea would challenge the strict separation of neurotypical and autistic as fixed, biologically determined categories.
Autism, understood as a neurological condition, might instead be seen as a social performance, where certain behaviours or traits become markers of being "autistic" or "neurotypical."
If we thought of autism as performative, it would imply that "autistic" is a role one enacts rather than a neurotype one is. The focus would shift away from brain structure or neurology and instead look at how certain behaviours are culturally labelled as autistic.
Just as someone is considered male or female based on their alignment with gender norms, someone might be considered autistic based on their adherence to or deviation from autistic stereotypes. Autism would be seen less as a neurological reality and more as a social identity shaped by how a person behaves or performs certain behaviours. A person could theoretically "perform autism" (and therefore identify as autistic) through behaviours that align with cultural understandings of autism (stimming, avoiding eye contact, being socially awkward), just as one might "perform gender" by dressing, speaking, or acting in ways culturally associated with femininity or masculinity.
Someone who does not "perform" autism according to these social cues might not be recognised as autistic, even if their neurology meets clinical criteria. This could also work in reverse: someone who performs certain stereotypical autistic behaviours might be labelled autistic even if they’re not actually autistic.
In this thought experiment, just as Queer Theory separates gender from biological sex, my proposed Neuro Queer Theory would separate autism from neurology, reducing it to a set of socially constructed behaviours. In doing so, it could challenge the medicalisation of autism, framing it instead as a cultural identity - much as gender is increasingly understood as distinct from the biological body.
Applying Queer Theory's performative lens to neurotypes raises provocative questions about what we consider to be biologically innate versus socially constructed. It invites us to imagine a world where autism is defined by behaviour and social roles rather than neurology, much as queer theory argues that gender is shaped by social performances rather than biological sex.
Hence, my dystopian Future of Autism Politics - a scary and nonsensical prospect indeed!

i love being queer.
i'm done worrying about finding the correct labels for myself because language can't always describe the human experience.
not gay not a lesbian not bisexual or pansexual or anything i'm just queer.
not a girl not a boy or anything in between i just exist and that feels freeing.

Yes thank you!!! Read up and understand what you're talking about before just slapping these words into your bio, folks.
Similarly, when terms like madpunk and neuropunk came about-- no doubt inspired by cripplepunk-- so many people simply refused to actually look into what that actually means and requires of them. I've seen so many proclaimed "madpunks/neuropunks" post about how they "hate people with [insert disorder]" or "think X isn't enough criteria for Y" etc etc. And it's like wow you aren't actually for disabled liberation you're just a neurodivergent person with a rigid political understanding that you deem as "punk".
Cripplepunk, madpunk, and neuropunk aren't just "I'm disabled and also left-leaning". It's a specific realm of activism rooted in dismantling the systems that put disabled, mad, sick, etc folks at a disadvantage in society. This mean not only being against the very systems that harm us but also understanding their colonial origins and continued racist legacies. (Anti-ableism, anti-sanism, anti-psych, etc). This means not only just identifying and finding pride in your disability but also building and constantly evolving your understanding of disability and diversity and learning how you can change your worldview to accurately highlight the struggles of disabled people. (EVEN if it sometimes means you will be uncomfortable or unsure of unlearning some kinds of hate.)

Ok, so I know Nimona's gender fluid and the whole shape shifting thing is a queer allegory.
BUT. (Don't worry)
I also think it’s an allegory of neurodivergency and disability! And I wanna talk about it:
To me, the « I wouldn't die die but I sure wouldn't be living » discussion feels very reminiscent of autistic stimming and masking, masking being explained here as the constant state of « that second before you sneeze ».
With that in mind, Nimona and Ballister's discussion in the train hits a lot closer to home for ND and disabled people in general because Ballister says « it would be easier for you » which isn’t actually true and shows how a lot of the world views disability. For people your disability is completely fine until they see it, they say they are disability allies but will shame you if you start stimming etc…
I think Nimona’s reaction to what Ballister said also shows that she is used to that kind of rethoric, she tries to lead him to the true answer « normal? » you’re normal for people if they can’t see your disability, « easier for who? » easier for him, easier for society because if they don’t see it they can ignore it. At the end of that conversation he doesn’t understand though and even think he is a hero for it « a lot of people aren’t as accepting as me » except what he does is actually the bare minimum, treating disabled people like actual people is the bare minimum whether you can see their disability or not!
At the end, Ballister understands that he was in the wrong and goes on to actually see Nimona as a person, as who she is « I see you ». And theoretically/utopically it’s the same for the kingdom’s people BUT it took the literal sacrifice of Nimona’s life for them to start treating her like a person which again should be the BARE MINIMUM. I think it is especially sad that it’s the way our society works as well, disabled people, queer people etc… shouldn’t have to earn the right to be treated as a person.
Thanks for reading all that, byeeee!

The idea that disabled people have to have a billion accessibility tools(in their own home) and therapies to be independent whether they want to or not is inherently and completely part of our current ableist capitalist hell scape <3

Attention all Neurodivergent & Queer folk
Hello everyone!! A friend of mine and I run a a discord server for Neurodivergent & Queer community. You can be Neurospicy or Queer maybe both! We are a small (but growing server) and we welcome diversity, no matter what race or religion or where you’re from. We all love the friends that live internationally. We also love to break the language barrier. Because most of us are interested in learning multiple languages. Especially if you speak a one of the languages we are interested in learning, so we will definitely poke your brain for questions about said language.
This server was/is created because no one else understood us & it was a good way for us to finally be yourself with others that understand. And learning how to manage our lifestyles by sharing tips and ideas, because we can relate to each other one or another. This community is for us to feel safe and understood. If you’re interested in joining I’ll post the link up right here. And if for some reason the link doesn’t work message me and I’ll send you a new link.
If you have any questions about the server Dm me and I’ll gladly give you more information & this server is 18+
