Neri Oxman | Bio Inspired Design. Synergy Between Nature & Humanity.
Neri Oxman | Bio Inspired Design. Synergy Between Nature & Humanity. In the first three industrial revolutions, new inventions were assembled from parts – as opposed to grown, like in nature. In the fourth industrial revolution, designers are operating at the intersection of the material, physical, digital and biological. In this presentation for the World Economic Forum, Neri Oxman – Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT Media Laboratory – discusses ideas including additive manufacturing using biopolymers and wearable devices involving microorganisms. Oxman Neri, The Krebs Cycle of Creativity III in Art and Practice with Neri Oxman (seminar), MoMA, Floor 2, Creativity Lab, 2020.
Art and Practice is a series of seminars and workshops that bring together emerging and experienced artists. Together they explore the challenges and possibilities of sustaining a creative life.
Neri Oxman will discuss her team’s creative process and invite others to share their experiences with the tensions between modes of thinking and making in the bio-digital age. Oxman will present her Krebs Cycle of Creativity, a framework that considers the domains of art, science, engineering, and design as synergetic forms of thinking; the input from one domain becomes the output of another. Each discipline explains, predicts, utilizes, and informs the world around us, and ultimately the designs we create. Inspired by the Bauhaus curriculum diagram, created in 1922 by Walter Gropius, the Cycle embodies the holistic nature of the Bauhaus education, in which individual creators representing diverse disciplinary backgrounds came together in pursuit of a shared mission to reform art, design, and society.

“Aguahoja” is a programmable water-based biocomposites for digital design and #fabrication developed by @mitmedialab and #NeriOxman. Using a design approach that facilitates a tight integration between material creation and robotic fabrication, the project allows for the creation of objects across a range of scales. It examines the importance of water in Nature’s systems, the cycles of birth, adaptation and decay allowing ecosystems to re-use materials again and again. By using old growth forests and coral reefs as inspiration, where waste is virtually non-existent, the design team compared this to the waste production rates of our building industries, where objects have an expiry date and materials are extracted from the earth faster than they can be replenished. 📝 Post by: @hamithz ——————————————————————— * Turn ON Post Notifications to see new content * Instagram 👉🏼 instagram.com/parametric.architecture * Website: 👉🏼 www.parametric-architecture.com * Facebook: 👉🏼 facebook.com/parametric.archi * Pinterest: 👉🏼 pinterest.com/parametricarchitecture * YouTube: 👉🏼 youtube.com/parametricarchitecture * Twitter: 👉🏼 twitter.com/parametricarch * Snapchat: 👉🏼 snapchat.com/paarchitecture * Reddit: 👉🏼 reddit.com/parametricarch * Tumblr: 👉🏼 parametricarchitecture.tumblr.com ——————————————————————— #3dprint #3dprinting #3dprinted #3dprinter #robots #robotics #robotic #architect #architectureporn #architecture #furniture #computationaldesign #architecturelovers #digitalfabrication #architects #architecteye #architecturelove #architecturedaily #parametric #architecturephotos #architecturepicture #parametricarchitecture #parametricdesign (at MIT Media Lab) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6DN1LQJmLN/?igshid=4nzpj9cyzzcj

Reason to celebrate: 'Neri Oxman: Material Ecology,' the first survey on the interdisciplinary biodesign genius of Neri Oxman, pioneer of "material ecology," is Back in Stock! Throughout her 20-year career, @oxmanofficial has invented not only new ideas for materials, buildings and construction processes, but also new frameworks for interdisciplinary—and interspecies—collaborations. She coined the term “material ecology” to describe her process of producing techniques and objects informed by the structural, systemic and aesthetic wisdom of nature, from the shells of crustaceans to the flow of human breathing. Groundbreaking for its solid technological and scientific basis, its rigorous and daring experimentation, its visionary philosophy and its unquestionable attention to formal elegance, Oxman’s work operates at the intersection of biology, engineering, architecture and artistic design, material science and computer science. This book—designed by @irma_boom_amsterdam and published to accompany a midcareer retrospective of Oxman’s work @themuseumofmodernart —highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the designer’s practice. It demonstrates how Oxman’s contributions allow us to question and redefine the idea of modernism—a concept in constant evolution—and of organic design. Some of the projects featured in the book and exhibition include the Silk Pavilion, which harnesses silkworms' ability to generate a 3-D cocoon out of a single thread silk in order to create architectural constructions; Aguahoja, a water-based fabrication platform that prints structures made out of different biopolymers; and Glass, an additive manufacturing technology for 3-D printing optically transparent glass structures at architectural dimensions. Israeli American architect, designer and inventor Neri Oxman (born 1976) is professor of media arts and sciences @mitmedialab Edited with text by @paolantonelli Text by @annaburckhardt & @hadassteiner Read more via linkinbio! #nerioxman #irmaboom #momadesign #design #materialecology #biodesign https://www.instagram.com/p/CNNrAjNpNEO/?igshid=16xb64rkpqkil

Oxman Neri, The Krebs cycle of Creativity (framework), 2016.
A map that describes the perpetuation of creative energy [...] (across) four modalities of human creativity: Science, Engineering, Design and Art. (Oxman, 2016)
You may have heard the term ‘citric acid cycle’ in a biology class at a high school: it was also called the "Krebs Cycle" after being discovered by German scientist Hans Krebs in 1937. It is an important biochemical reaction for the metabolism of living organisms and refers to reactions that occur in all living organisms that breathe oxygen. The detailed explanation is omitted here, but Neri's "Krebs Cycle of Creativity (KCC)" uses the citric acid cycle as an analogy, and how to circulate the creative energy in order to circulate the economy (Neri calls it Creative ATP, Cre ATP).
At KCC, philosophy is at the centre of basic theory ‘Perception’, and economics is at the centre of applied practice ‘Production’. The four domains of human creativity, "Art", "Design", "Engineering", and "Science" are the carbon compounds of the citric acid cycle. The energy of creativity will be metabolized by each domain generating a currency that will be transformed into another domain. The contents will be briefly described as Science: Creating and utilizing the knowledge of ‘Engineering’ by explaining and predicting our world / Engineering: Creating practicality by utilizing scientific knowledge to solve problems / Design: Creating our behavioural changes by maximizing utility / Art: Creating new recognition in the world by criticizing our behavioural changes. Neri Oxman’s KCC works as a framework to locate the flows of human creativity across metaphorical disciplinary spaces; each quadrant issues currencies that activate other domains, circulating energy of creativity and promoting innovation. As a speculative map, the KCC is intentionally abstract and can be understood as a clock, a microscope, a compass, and a gyroscope.

Neri Oxman‘s 3D-printed wearables structures bio-engineered with bacteria for interplanetary voyages. Neri Oxman's team at MIT Media Lab has created four 3D-printed "wearable skins" designed to facilitate synthetic biological processes that might one day allow humans to survive on other planets. Neri Oxman and members of the Mediated Matter group at MIT Media Lab – an interdisciplinary research department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – collaborated with 3D printing company Stratasys to create structures with varied rigidity, opacity and colour. The team used an Objet500 Connex3 Color, Multi-material 3D Production System to 3D print the "skins" in a range of plastics with different densities – each one suited to a different planet in the Earth's solar system.
