The Best News of Last Week
🦾 - High-Five for Bionic Hand
1. Houston-area school district announces free breakfast and lunch for students
Pasadena ISD students will be getting free breakfast and lunch for the 2023-24 school year, per an announcement on the district's social media pages.
The 2023-24 free lunch program is thanks to a Community Eligibility Provision grant the district applied for last year. The CEP, which is distributed by the Department of Agriculture, is specially geared toward providing free meals for low-income students.
2. Dolphin and her baby rescued after being trapped in pond for 2 years
youtube
A pair of dolphins that spent nearly two years stuck in a Louisiana pond system are back at sea thanks to the help of several agencies and volunteers.
According to the Audubon Nature Institute, wildlife observers believe the mother dolphin and her baby were pushed into the pond system near Grand Isle, Louisiana, during Hurricane Ida in late August 2021.
3. Studies show that putting solar panels over waterways could boost clean energy and conserve water. The first U.S. pilot project is getting underway in California.
Some 8,000 miles of federally owned canals snake across the United States, channeling water to replenish crops, fuel hydropower plants and supply drinking water to rural communities. In the future, these narrow waterways could serve an additional role: as hubs of solar energy generation.
4. Gene therapy eyedrops restored a boy's sight. Similar treatments could help millions
Antonio was born with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, a rare genetic condition that causes blisters all over his body and in his eyes. But his skin improved when he joined a clinical trial to test the world’s first topical gene therapy.
The same therapy was applied to his eyes. Antonio, who’s been legally blind for much of his 14 years, can see again.
5. Scientists develop game-changing vaccine against Lyme disease ticks!
A major step in battling Lyme disease and other dangerous tick-borne viruses may have been taken as researchers announced they have developed a vaccine against the ticks themselves.
Rather than combatting the effects of the bacteria or microbe that causes Lyme disease, the vaccine targets the microbiota of the tick, according to a paper published in the journal Microbiota on Monday.
6. HIV Transmission Virtually Eliminated in Inner Sydney, Australia
Sydney may be the first city in the world to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Inner Sydney has reduced new HIV acquisitions by 88%, meaning it may be the first locality in the world to reach the UN target to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030
7. New bionic hand allows amputees to control each finger with unprecedented accuracy
In a world first, surgeons and engineers have developed a new bionic hand that allows users with arm amputations to effortlessly control each finger as though it was their own body.
Successful testing of the bionic hand has already been conducted on a patient who lost his arm above the elbow.

Sugar calling Sydney only after Pete had me in tears, in the most vulnerable moment of her life, her second choice wasn't Richie or Carmy, two people she KNOWS would move heaven and earth to help her (everything to avoid therapy, but whatever), but instead, it was the girl who came into their lives like a force of nature. I love my girls so much 😭♥️

The song that plays at Sydney's party is Laid by James, released in 1993.
This song is about a tumultuous relationship which involves passion, knives, and therapy.
It's an upbeat tone, but the lyrics go into the tumultuous nature of some relationships. IMO, it's a paradox of these relationships, portraying them as both a source of joy, the happy beat that plays, and pain. The singer is fighting with a girlfriend who is unpredictable and wild, which he finds both thrilling and distressing.
He kicks the lover out in the song and still they come back and he still wants them.
Interestingly, the lyrics that play while she's thinking of everyone at the beef are "I found you sleeping next to me. I thought I was alone. You're driving me crazy. When are you coming home"
The final image in her head before the panic attack is Carmy- she's overwhelmed, and the music stops.
Isn't this the Bear? The restaurant is both joy and pain. It's dysfunctional and Carmy and Sydney's relationship involves passion, and Carmy is unpredictable and wild, yet she doesn't want to leave, and Sydney realizes this in the end.

I was reading five times at a simmer; once boiling over again and idk if someone else already pointed out but I noticed you predicted a lot of things for season 2 like the “I couldn’t have done any of this without you” line, the panic attack moment and syd helping him, the fact that she wants accolades like a star and carmy saying they’re overrated, and probably more! so idk if it’s because they as well as their relationship are very well written so they are predictable for amazing writers like you or because you’re just a genius or you’re actually chris lol but wow this was great to read and you’re extremely talented!
Also pleaseee share some theories you have for sydcarmy s3 I will believe you!!
gah! thank you so much. thoughtful words like this mean so much to me. writers are typically so deeply critical of their own work and i am no exception! i appreciate your sentiments so very much. truly.
it's so funny because the same thing was brought to my attention about the second one shot i wrote after five times at a simmer; once boiling over.
in still don't know what love means i also predicted a few things that ended up happening in the second season.
i watch so much tv and have written a handful of spec scripts so its very possible i just see the story theme threads and follow them in the way i think they would naturally go in subsequent seasons.
i actually don't have any concrete guesses around s3 other than what i've seen other fans speculate about.
there's gonna be a lot of tension and discord. carmy's going to regress and probably drive sydney away/she'll be poached. they'll fight. probably alot. i forsee some type of emotional breakthrough for carmy towards the end of the season. like maybe we'll see him crying for the first time? perhaps over natalie's baby or hearing about the details of mikey's funeral or something happening to or with donna.
maybe he'll go somewhere to attempt to release or process or deal with his anger and grief. maybe even something unconventional that isn't therapy.
he's probably gonna turn into asshole chef from nyc, which is one of the reasons syd will threaten to walk/actually walk.
i'm very interested in the grand gesture carmy will present sydney with this season. first season was the restaurant, second season was the chef's whites. it's easy to say the third season would be a star but i actually think it's going to be more personal this time around. i also am not convinced they'll get the star on their first try.
but that will be his hyper-fixation and preeminent concern throughout the entirety of the season which will likely turn him into someone sydney won't want to be around or can't trust.
this is gonna be their angst season without a doubt. i eat up angst with a spoon so i'm ready.
richie or tina or natalie likely makes some comment(s) about the nature of the sydcarmy partnership. one or both refute/deny/hide, etc.
they might get too physically close or cross the energetic plane during an intense moment of resolution or continued conflict. they probably won't address or talk about it.
carmy may display some jealousy that he'll mask as rigidity and order and discipline in the name of getting a star if he sees richie/marcus/luca being too chummy with sydney.
edit: oh and something like this
#sydcarmy#carmy x sydney#the bear fx#the bear#i wish i was chris put me in your new writers room pls!!!!!

Hey gays back again here with part 2 of my synopsis or review or whatever this is of Camp Here And There
glad the short amount of people who saw the post likes it
First, I like that the pink elephant man has just become an excuse for kids to steal stuff lol
I really love the character development of Sydney so far! The dialogue between him and the other characters always feel so natural and well written
ALSO YOU CANT HIDE FROM ME GIANNI MATREGANO
YOU CANT.
Moving on, the theory of Jedediah being TPE Man has died down because I DO read the reposts very often! Very delighted by them actually
another thing I’ve noticed is that the world building has gotten more confident in itself
SYDNEY YOUR MOTHER WHAT-
does therapy exist in this universe? God I hope so tbh
it has been a month so I do forget some things about the series
Sydney and Jedediah need couples therapy also
GOD THEY NEED IT SO BADLY.
I love how the plots that are told through Sydney’s perspective are never needed to have dialogue on characters or what you would usually need for a filler episode in a kids tv show but only the story being told
it’s very simple and fun
it does put less work on mayfield’s writers
It is a shame that they aren’t shown but it’s a very cool concept in storytelling that works so well!
GIVE NAMES YOU PUSSY
Anyways I’ll have more parts because I write these within the span of an episode and I don’t feel like making these when I listen to bulk amounts of episodes

What are some of your unpopular opinions when it comes to syd and carmy?
I don't know if these are unpopular or not. But I'm just going to say them.
The Carmy x Therapy narrative is kind of upsetting. He already thinks he's unloveable and incapable of loving back towards a person. Yes, Carmy needs to work on himself a lot after season 2, but that doesn't mean a relationship can't co-exist with therapy. I'm not saying that Carmy should immediately jump into a relationship next season either, I'm just saying that he can work on himself and take the time to unpack his real feelings towards someone (I'm hoping Syd, but regardless of my own bias), then he can see if that person is worth pursuing. Being alone doesn't have to be the end all be all, craving intimacy is a natural feeling and it's a part of being a human.
This is not really on the ship itself but on the fandom, shipping Carmy and Sydney is not immature or defeats the focus of the show. Carmy and Sydney's shippers aren't even rude to people who don't ship them. This is a show that we're all interested in, so why are we attacking each other for different choices of opinion? Shipping Carmy and Sydney doesn't even cloud our opinion of the other characters. We all engage in conversations about everyone else, we care about everyone's growth, therefore, we care about this show and its characters.
I don't think the Carmy and Claire situation would've escalated into a relationship if Carmy asked Sydney to hang out in season 2 episode 1 during the locker scene. I don't doubt that Claire would be in the picture, but I don't think Carmy would've been so open about being with her if he and Syd got past their nervousness of hanging outside of work.
Sydney does understand Carmy's mental state. I don't think she idolises him as much as she did in the first episode of s1. Although she does ask about how it felt to achieve a lot, she has seen him having self-destructive meltdowns, she helped him out of one in episode 10 with the fish. She might not know the extent of it, but she always makes sure to help when she can.

Okay, here’s a little SydCarmy clip. It’s super short. I’m always so nervous posting new content.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
Fak actually uses his brain for once and does not give Claire the correct number.
Thus leaving Carmen focused on his work, and subsequently his work partner.
Who slowly brings him around to the idea of therapy, on top of his regular Al-non meetings.
Before Carmen realizes it, his quality of life has significantly improved. He still has really bad days, and anxiety still wracks him whenever it feels like it.
But he sleeps more. Way more. And he’s able to keep himself level, self-regulating became second nature to him, after seeing the way the kitchen responded to his growth.
He would say the team of the Bear worked like a well-oiled machine. But no. That wasn’t it. It wasn’t so lifeless and mechanical.
No, they were an orchestra of different instruments working in the same rhythm. Dancing around each other seamlessly, orders going out before expected.
Carmen had never been so proud in his life.
Though, the executive chef felt a little guilty when he had to admit to himself that he was just a bit more proud of his CDC.
But could anyone really blame him?
Sydney impressed him on her worst days.
And on her best…
She practically knocked the wind out of his lungs with the precision and skill, yet thoughtfulness and creativity. All while looking absolutely stunning. The harsh lights of the kitchen do nothing to hide the beauty of her hands, the natural glow of her dark skin.
Some days, when Carmen had a little less of a handle on himself, and his eyes, he would get lost for a few seconds. Mesmerized by the living art of Sydni Adamu in her element.
He knew. He’d known for a while.
Carmen was completely blissfully fucked.
In every sense of the word, but one.
Which is where our problem begins.
#sydcarmy#the bear#fanfiction#sydcarmy fic#from the drafts#they’re taking over my life at this point#Carmen will probably always be OOC for me#simply because I don’t know how to write straight men#soz#sydney and carmy

I think that many of this SM4 rumors come from different factions that are pushing certain stuff at negotiations. I don't think that SM4 had anything to do with the delay of Euphoria because contractually Euphoria would have taken priority over Spidey for Z since Zs Spidey contract (and its precedence over Euphoria) expired with NWH. Also Sydney straight up said that Euphoria was going to be her next project so this decision to delay Euphoria was very recent and the most likely reason is that Sam is going through some shit probably triggered by the deaths of Angus and Turen and he's not accepting for anyone else to help him with the writing (I do think that the Euphoria situation is a major contributing factor to Zs stress. She's not only the lead of the show, but also a producer and a close friend of Sam. We know she would go to his house to motivate him to write during S2. All of this shit should be stressful as hell for her. I think she needs to be ready to walk away if Sam is not willing to get help with the writing. She can't put her career on hold to be a therapist for a friend)
Anyway, we saw during NWH press how Amy Pascal straight up lied to reporters saying that Tom had signed a new Spidey contract. I would bet good money that many of these fake leaks are coming from her. There are billions of $$ involved with the franchise, and when there's so much money at stake people become ruthless. I would not believe anything about SM4 unless it's coming from Variety, Deadline or THR. Until then I'm not going to stress about Spidey at all
Thanks Anon for your input ☺️
Well.... All I'll say is that I definitely hope that Z isn't stressing out about "Euphoria" based on Sam's account. 🥴
While I love Zendaya's incredibly sweet heart and kind nature, I really don't think she should be responsible for babysitting a nearly 40-year old man, and holding his hand to get his freakin' work done. 🙄😒
Going over his house to try to "motivate" him to write??? 🥴 I'm sorry, but NO. 😒 He is a GROWN MAN. My coworkers don't come over to my house to try to get me to sit at my computer and do my job anytime I'm having an emotional or mental bad day. 👀
If the deaths of Angus and Turen have been too much for him (which is totally understandable), then he needs to hire some writers (like NORMAL directors do), OR, take a bit of a break, and revive the show for one last season years from now. 👀 He could even do what "Downton Abbey" does, and just make a full-feature film at the theater after the show seasons ended lol 😆
Making a 2-hour film might actually be easier for him than trying to do 8 one-hour episodes. 👀
Either way, I hope Sam is getting some therapy. 👀 I just think it's incredibly stressful (and shows a lack of common courtesy) to your cast to be taking years to write stuff that really should have been finished long time ago, and to be changing scripts LAST MINUTE every single filming day 🙄(cuz the cast has def talked about this 👀).
Let's also not forget how the crew was constantly complaining all during the S2 filming about the crazy conditions they were under. 🥴
Idk, maybe it's just me, but it just seems to lack common courtesy... but maybe Sam is a perfectionist. 🤷🏾♀️

a modern ghost story - wip re-intro
finally, a re-intro for my first ever writeblr wip intro... waow how time flies.
taglist (i'm gonna be real with y'all, i lost track of the taglist and had to dig it up again--tentatively tagging the original taglist as well as folks i thought might be interested): @albatris @skitzo-kero @anexor @lychniscitrus @transmasc-wizard @chaieyestea @vacantgodling @kingkendrick7 @jezifster @manuscriptsatmidnight @fictionalbullshitter @astral-runic
(if you'd like to not be tagged in posts relating to this wip going forward, lmk!!! <3 and if you'd like to be added to the actual taglist, also lmk!!!)
synopsis: A Modern Ghost Story is the tale of the four members of The Cyclone Seekers, a group of semi-famous storm-chasers, and their harrowing adventures chasing after storms in Nebraska in 2006. On the way, they quickly come to learn that they have far, far more than tornadoes to worry about waiting for them in the storms. Something sinister is afoot, and their past may come back to haunt them in a very literal way.
setting: various fictional locations in Nebraska, United States, in 2006
genres: postmodern horror (?) with traces of comedy--fundamentally a road trip story, though, about healing and facing the horrors head-on.
vibes except it's not clear what these mean: late nights at sleepovers where no one wants to go to bed yet, a mason jar full of bottle caps, the highs and lows of a long road trip with your friends, strange messages on the radio in a voice you thought you'd forgotten, the past is always one step closer than it appears to be, the coppery taste of blood on your tongue, your heart pounding in your ears as the world roars around you, a group of queer adrenaline junkies, "therapy is expensive, but sitting in your car while it rains is free."
characters:
picrew: [link]
Roach - 29 - they/them - 5'2"
Roach is not the face of Cyclone Seekers, as they find the idea of actually appearing on camera daunting. For the most part, Roach prefers to stay behind the scenes, most often handling their budget, equipment, and transportation, as well as acting as their cameraman. A lifelong smartass, they always say exactly what's on their mind and they're not particularly graceful or tactful. Why would they be, after all? Talking around the point only wastes time, and Roach hates to stop when there's important shit to get done.
Despite their blunt and often rude nature, Roach has a big heart deep down, and they care deeply for their fellow Cyclone Seekers, considering the others their best friends in the world. Roach doesn't have a lot of people in their corner, and they're steadfastly loyal to the end.
Oliver Cox - 32 - he/him - 6'1"
Oliver, like Roach, is not the face of the Cyclone Seekers. Instead, he is the manager of their ViewTube channel and website, as well as the one who usually deals with the people side of things. He's very sweet and enthusiastic, and generally a very gentle man who hates to even raise his voice. While, like everyone else, Oliver has his moments of anger, he prefers to redirect this anger into something productive rather than taking it out on others.
This isn't to say, of course, that Oliver is an innocent child. He's had his fair share of hardships and struggles in his life. However, he believes wholeheartedly in the goodness of humanity and the world around him. And this extends to the team, especially Roach--despite their often prickly exterior, Oliver considers them a very dear friend and is very happy to have them in his life. He sees the best in everyone until they give him reason not to.
Sydney "Syd" Ambrose - 29 - they/she - 5'11"
Syd is a friend of Roach's from college, an extremely anxious person who, at heart, has always wanted to leave their mark on history in some way. With their thirtieth birthday rapidly approaching, they want to do something great before the big day. This has, in part, reflected on their work with the Cyclone Seekers. As one of two hosts of the show, Syd is often in the spotlight, despite their severe anxiety about public speaking. When the cameras are rolling, their fear falls away, and they easily steal the show.
Aside from their ambition to do something great that lands in the history books, Syd has had a lifelong fascination with storms. The world of more traditional meteorology wasn't for them, so they've decided a more fulfilling career is to chase storms around and study them directly. It's working out so far, despite Syd's growing restlessness regarding the group's lack of mainstream success.
Yara Key - 30 - she/her - 5'7"
Yara is the other host of the Cyclone Seekers, and she's the much more outwardly optimistic and outgoing one. Their bit on the show is that, though Syd is the anxious one, they're also first to jump headlong into danger just to get a good look at a tornado; Yara, meanwhile, is friendly and outgoing but also the first to hide. It's a good bit and one that brings her a lot of joy, though it does irritate her sometimes to have people assume she's actually a coward. Because she isn't--she's just not stupid.
Though Yara hasn't known the others that long, she's a loyal friend who cares about them all deeply, and her not-so-secret crush on Syd is something Roach teases her about rather frequently (to which she gladly responds by teasing them about their similar crush on Oliver). When it comes down to it, fame isn't important to Yara, but she has a genuine love for entertaining people. And if she can do it while educating them about dangerous storms at the same time? All the better.
Vincent Cruz - 28 - he/him (questioning they/them) - 5'9"
Vincent Cruz is not a member of the Cyclone Seekers, nor does he have any particular interest in joining their little group. In fact, he thinks they're pretty ridiculous, and more than that, they're fucking stupid. He's grown up his whole life in a small town in Nebraska and knows all-too-well how dangerous storms like the ones they seek out can really be. They're going to get themselves killed, and they'll be lucky if it's quick.
However, Vincent feels an obligation to help them, or at least to make sure they can't put themselves or anyone else at risk with their antics. He isn't sure what makes him feel such a desire to protect them, but he insists it's not out of any care for them. They're just stupid. If he doesn't do anything, then they'll die. Simple math. (Ignoring the fact that they're his first friends in years, and they seem to genuinely like him for who he is when few others do.)
Vulture - 31 - he/him - 6'2"
A mysterious figure from Roach's past, one that they, until now, were completely certain was out of their life forever. Vulture is cold and cruel and pretentious, seeing himself as quite literally better than everyone else. He loves to hear himself talk and wants everyone to think he's the coolest motherfucker in the room at all times, for better and for worse.
For the most part, he doesn't seem interested in Roach, for which they're grateful. However, he has been contacting them again for the first time in nearly ten years, asking to meet up again.

are there any kinds of "bush medicines" you've used, whether by yourself or under the advice/provision of your marrkidjbu? Can you share those stories?
What are some(I say some but really I mean: tell me all about it please) medicinal plants found in Australia? Are there some specific to regions like NT or are they relatively widespread?
I don't know how to word this properly but hopefully I'm getting my message across. I am deeply deeply curious about medicines you can't just go down corner shop to get.
Here's a list off the top of my head of bush medicines I've used. I've also added where you can find the necessary ingredients involved (that I'm aware of, anyway.
Allowed maggot therapy when a cut on my heel got infected. (Flies are fucking everywhere in Australia.) Once the maggots cleaned the wound out I dumped them and left them in a pig I hunted. You're welcome, maggots. Breed and prosper. This wound then had an emu bush poultice applied for antiseptic and it was wrapped until it healed. Scarred but I didn't need to have my food lopped off so I'm considering that a win. [WIDESPREAD]
I've drank red gum kino for my cough. It worked for about two hours before I had to drink more. [WIDESPREAD, I used Sydney red gum but it seems most if not all red gums are so tannin-rich that this works]
Banksia nectar for cough syrup. Holy shit does this work. [NEAR THE COASTS, especially the southeast and southwest]
I've made poultices of paperbark leaves and applied them to wounds. In my experience the wounds heal better and scarring is lessened if you do this. You can also steep the leaves and drink to treat coughs and sore throats. [EAST COAST SOUTH OF BRIZ]
Emu bush, emu bush, emu bush. Whether it's steeping and using it as mouthwash/to gargle or steeping and flushing wounds with it or applying it to wounds as poultices, I've used it. Emu bush is naturally astringent and antiseptic. If drank, it helps remedy headaches and induces sleep. I've used it to treat my insomnia. Treat this plant with the respect you'd show wattle, as it's sacred and is used in ceremonies. [WIDESPREAD EXCEPT TOP END AND FNQ]
Witchetty grub poultice. Hear me out. It works for burns well. You have to cover it with something or it'll dry out though (I've used gauze but cotton cloth with also work). [RED CENTRE, however "witchetty grub" is a general term for the larvae of certain species of moths and I reckon any species with the moniker of "witchetty grub" would work]
Goat's foot. Crush and cook the leaves, then apply to whatever part of you is hurting. It's a topical pain reliever. I use it for burns (and sometimes sunburns) and animal stings. [COASTLINES]
Wattle blossom: hung in the sleeping area to help promote sleep. This is more a "folk" medicine than a bush medicine--in the sense that I have no idea whether or not it actually works or how--but I'm personally convinced of it working. [WIDESPREAD]
Common sneezeweed: drank as a tea for coughs, colds, or chest infections. I used it for my cough. It didn't work very well (not as well as gum kino) but my cough is also because of an allergy which may be why. [WIDESPREAD BUT ESP QLD AND VIC]
Varnishleaf: applied to stings. Chew up the leaf and juice, then apply to the sting. I'm not sure if it has some osmotic effect or if it outright neutralises the venom, but it works. [WIDESPREAD EXCEPT TOP END AND FNQ]
Australian Sandalwood: chew nuts into a paste and apply to small wounds like scratches or scrapes. Leaves can be ground into a poultice and applied to irritated skin. The wood can also be burnt, with the smoke being a mosquito repellent. Like emu bush, treat this plant with the respect you'd show wattle, as it's sacred and is used in ceremonies. [SA, SOUTHERN WA]
Eucalyptus tea: used for treating fevers, chills, and general body pains. Tastes very fucking bitter and you can't drink a lot of it because it's also toxic in high quantities. Back in Oz I would start my mornings off with a cup of eucalyptus tea when I ran out of coffee. [WIDESPREAD]
Broad-leaved paperbark: Chew new leaves to treat head colds. Steep and drink to treat headaches and chest colds. [EAST COAST]
Maidenhair ferns: Astringent and emetic. Steeped as tea and drank to induce vomiting, or leaves eaten raw. Roots also eaten to induce vomiting. [TOP END, FNQ]
Zamia palm: Nuts are eaten raw to induce vomiting. [SOUTHWEST WA]
Indian beech tree: All of tree is poisonous. Leaves are ground and steeped in hot water, then strained and the water is drank to induce vomiting. Additionally bark may be steeped for the same effect. Extremely bitter. This is used before certain ceremonies to purge the body and stomach. [TOP END, FNQ]
Wild cowpea: Roots are eaten to treat constipation. They're better cooked. [EAST COAST, TOP END]
Pale turpentine bush: Steep and drink to help minimise symptoms of tuberculosis and fever. I've used it for fever. [SOUTHERN SA, WESTERN VIC]
Rosary pea: Roots are eaten to induce abortion. I've never seen this used in a person but I'm aware it works. I have however seen it used in a dog that would not have survived if the pups were carried to term. [COASTAL QLD, TOP END]
There's other's I've heard about--Coelospermum decipiens decoction used for contraceptive, the juice of young sandpaper fig roots used to treat skin wounds and blemishes, etc, but the above is what I've seen personally be used, or have used myself. :]

BACKSTORY ⸻
Sylvia Bello was the oldest child of Sydney Doyle, who was only a teenager at the time of her birth. For most of her life, things were very hard at home. Especially when Sylvia got really sick as a toddler and lost most of her hearing. Her father was in and out of the picture while her mother struggled to find the right accommodations for her child. It only got harder as her mother welcomed more children with different partners –most of which didn’t stick around long enough to become a father figure in her life.
Things got a little harder when it came time for the little girl to go to school. The public schools in her area didn’t have the right accommodations for her, which made it really hard for her to learn. She also had to deal with kids who made fun of her and bullied her for disability. As she got older, Sylvia learned to deal with it. At least until her mother could send her to a school for the deaf and hard of hearing. She learned American Sign Language and took speech therapy so that she could communicate with others. Shortly before she graduated, she decided to get the cochlear implant. Not because she felt that there was something wrong with being deaf, but so things would be easier for her.
She got a full ride scholarship to University of Illinois, where she majored in English. Writing had always been her escape growing up, so it only made sense for her to go in that direction. Leaving Blue Harbor, even if temporarily, was hard. She hated leaving her mom, knowing that she was a big financial help in the house. But the only way they could get better was if she earned a degree and landed a well-paying job.
The woman moved back home with her mother after college, but the dynamic had changed. Her mother was pregnant by her new boyfriend, who was a complete asshole to her older kids. While her home life became very toxic, her career started taking off as a journalist. Initially she was doing some freelancing gigs, which turned into a paid internship at the blue news and later a job offer. The second she landed the job and found some stability, she moved out. She hated to leave mom, but she couldn’t live in that house anymore.
Over the years, Sylvia had a couple of serious relationships. She fantasized about love and marriage, but she didn’t have a good example of what that looked like. Yelling, throwing things, and leaving when things got hard were so normalized to her. It took years and therapy to unlearn that. Her family was a touchy subject as well, as she became financially and emotionally responsible for her mother and siblings. If she wasn’t bailing one of her brothers out of jail, she was supporting her sister’s new venture or helping mom with whatever she needed. She felt like the mom sometimes.
She was in a much calmer season of her life when she met Jia. They started off as friends but slowly their relationship blossomed into something more. Sylvia was glad that they had found each other, she truly adored Jia. Being strong for others always seem to fall on her, but coming home to Jia, she could let let down her guard a bit. Married life had treated them well. They had their ups and down like any other couple, but nothing weren't handling so far.

confused college kids!!!
It's a Sydrian one-shot (shocker), a college au that's basically just them talking during a study session for an art history test. In the current version (started last month) I'm making Adrian a trans girl, just because I wanted to do a half gender swap to make it gay, and making her a cis girl seemed cowardly lol
This one is a really good showcase of why I never finish anything actually. Look at those dates!
When I started this (AH College AU) it was supposed to be a drabble! As in a hundred words long!
The premise was just some conversations about mental health where I projected heavily and that I thought in an all human AU Sydney might actually kiss Adrian first
Then I abandoned it for like 2 years, and last month I decided to make it gay, and that gave me some new inspiration. Sydney was already demi in the original because she always is but you know. But making Adrian a girl brings some of their original dynamic back in an all human setting, and making her trans might put 5he mental health stuff in a new light that I need to think about. And I added some separation drama. Then I added a Hopper subplot and I need to decide if he's really gonna be a cat in this. Or if I should cut it. And I need to make sure they're coming off as endearingly pretentious kids and not just obnoxious. And that the serious conversations don't sound like therapy speak and feel natural.
It's now like 15 hundred words long which is, simultaneously, really not that many, 15 times as many as I intended it to be, and way fewer words than it's probably gonna be if it ever gets finished.
Me in a nutshell

HEHEHE THANK YOU SYDNEY
1. Are Pokémon able to use more than four moves?
I can’t think of a logical reason they would ONLY be able to know 4 moves (which is funny to say bc there’s plenty of things I headcanon that don’t make sense and I simply don’t care lol) so I think it makes sense that pokemon would have the ability to know HOW to use multiple moves but it’s league standard/THE LAW that in battle you can only have 4 moves that I imagine you have to register in some way? I would assume pokemon battling and being a trainer is so integrated into everyday life that only having your pokemon actively use 4 moves would become so second nature that it FEELS literal that they can only know 4 moves even if it isn’t. Whereas with wild pokemon I figure they can do whatever the fuck they want, also people who like to break laws.
17. Do Pokémon understand human speech?
Absolutely I think they can lmao don’t mind what I said about logic I don’t care if it doesn’t make logical sense I think it’s more fun that way if my pokemon can just fully understand the sentences I would speak at them
25. What's a headcanon or lore drop you've desperately wanted to talk about but haven't gotten the chance to?
Okay not really headcanon or lore but something I’ve been thinking about is how my irl job would translate into the pokemon universe. I work in the mental health field and I was like wait… would pokemon HAVE a mental health field? And I think it would but I think it would be different from ours, I kind of assume oppression (which I think is a big factor in mental health irl) doesn’t exist in the pokemon universe in the way it exists in our world, pokemon is for escapism after all!! However, trauma and such I imagine would exist in any world though + biological disorders, so I figured yeah mental health care would exist. AND ALL THAT IS TO SAY: I think having a jigglypuff and other pokemon at work would be sooo helpful I think therapy pokemon is such a fun idea and I wish they could be real.
#can’t proof read or go as in-depth bc my family is side eyeing me for being on my phone lol#but this was so fun thank you syd merry Christmas!!!!#pokemon#ask

Hi blog,
Been a while. Going by my last actual written entry here, it has been 4 years since I cared or had time to lay down my feelings and experiences in their most raw. No editing here, for a change - yay!
A quick summary to catch you up, 'cause the last few years have been quite full.
Got married
Had a baby
Landed a new Sydney-based job
Enjoyed working with Australian and NZ brands with said Sydney-based company
Got into a near-fatal car accident right outside our home
Left Sydney-based job and took two months off to recalibrate (didn't realize how badly I needed it until I was fully immersed in it -- highly recommend if you were born in the '90s like me and went to work right after college grad haha)
Did a short freelancing stint with a NY-based Filipino lifestyle brand (thanks to a generous mentor who did the introduction)
Let freelancing stint go as I got more serious with my full-time job applications
Went on a fun family trip to Bohol just in time for Chunky's 2nd birthday
Started a new work-from-anywhere job with one of the best digital agencies I've come across (funnily enough, first "worked" with them when I was still with Summit -- felt like a foreshadowing haha)
So... that's the past 4 years as a list. What's not seen are the many breakdowns and breakthroughs, coffees and matcha lattes, crippling anxieties and thank-you-universe moments of happiness that I went through, paid for, and lived through.
TBH, today's writing prompt was a personal low point. It's been a tough several weeks or month, really. And yesterday, it all just came to a boil. I've been thinking about journaling the past few months, and today I just couldn't fight the urge anymore. I just need an outlet or maybe coping mechanism would be more accurate. I've tried a lot at this point: looking at my zodiac readings (lol), curating crystals (can confirm they work haha), downloading cat games, downloading "soothing" games, retail therapy (too easy to get carried away with this), and going to the gym. But this - writing and talking to the void where I feel unknown in the best possible way - will always be the most natural for me.
I promise to be back. Even these last few minutes of just typing away my thoughts almost as soon as they came to me has brought me immense comfort. Let's work towards this bringing me joy.
Note: Funny story about this book. Badly wanted this and my then-boyfriend, now-husband bought it for me for Christmas. Was only about a quarter of the way through reading when life took over and I had to pause. Lent it to a friend who, 'til now, has not returned it yet. hahaha I see her semi-regularly, must remember to ask for it back next time.
#blogging#back to blogging#if you know me irl im fine i swear haha#April 22 2023#writing#free therapy

Dearest Jedidiah and the Tonies perhaps? :)
calling him dearest jedidiah made me giggle i think its bc jedidiahs such a fancy name . makes me go hehehehe . the tonies r tricky for me to do mundane hcs for bc i struggle to have distinct hcs for them both separately i gotta pay more attention to those mfs on my relisten to form more characterization . so ill do u just a ton of jedidiah ones which is ez bc im crazy cray cray insane abt him
i think jedidiah takes seroquel when he gets on medication and gets therapy and shit . bc thats what i take and we are the same
he can play the piano because lucille got him to take lessons a lot when he was younger and he liked learning video game sountracks on them (: he hasnt played in a while but he was pretty good at it
he also can only use wired headphones because wireless ones stress him out hes constantly paranoid hes gonna drop them and break them
he has tons of watches on both of his wrists and most of them are analog but he has ONE digital watch and its a shitty little kids star wars watch that sydney got him thats always 14 minutes behind it doesnt serve purpose to help with his rituals he just likes having it on and its easy to hide the sentimental value with having it be with a ton of other watches
he mirrors video game dialogue a lot many of his go-to phrases are snatched from games he really likes and yvonne teases him for it a lot, sydney too when he catches them tho hes less of a gamer so its more rare
every time he plays a pokemon game or anything else with customizable characters he doesnt put in himself he formulates a whole oc with a general personality and feelings about things and then makes choices based on what he thinks the character he made would do
he really likes ferrets and weasels and stoats and other long creatures of that nature he researches them on occasion . he thinks theyre sweet and kinda wants a ferret as a pet but worries about how smelly they are
he collects both pokemon and magic the gathering cards . he likes collecting things if he can find something to collect and organize logically he WILL . but trading cards are a favorite because he likes putting them in binders with specific organizational styles
he listens to a lot of dnd podcasts (: hes often been too busy or shut off or nervous to join an actual dnd group but he ADORES dnd and has all the manuals and shit so its a nice way to deal w that interest . he gets very annoyed when the people on them dont follow the rules tho hes one of those types
hes tried to program a video game several times and every single time hes gotten stressed halfway through and given up on it . he randomly is like this would be suchh a cool idea but then he overwhelms himself . he does find it quite relaxing though so sometimes he works on random projects hes started so he can detense
he always wears clothes slightly too baggy for him . it started out intentional for comfort but now he just genuinely does not know what size clothes fit him so even if he wants to get something that fits him properly he wouldnt really know how
hes tried to write poetry before but hes failed every time due to being canonically too repressed for it . he just stares at the paper and then puts his pen down and stares at a clock for an hour
