SAVE THIS RECIPE 👇🏻
Homemade Winter Cough Syrup
Unlike OTC cough syrups that are filled with dyes, artificial sweeteners, and tons of preservatives and fillers...this is a clean version with immune boosting and antioxidant rich ingredients.
Takes 5 minutes to prep and it's 100% natural.
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 cup honey
• Chopped ginger root (peeled or unpeeled)
• 2 whole lemons with rind
• 2 tsp oregano
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• 1 tsp turmeric
• ½ tsp black pepper
• Dash of cayenne pepper
• Add water and honey to your jar, then lemons and your spices. After you put on the lid, flip it upside down so the honey will infuse with everything else and just pop it in the fridge!
You can freeze this into ice cubes for tea 🤔

Do you know how invert sugar works? I've heard a lot of conflicting things about it and it seems to be increasingly popular in packaged foods and restaurant food which is frustrating cause it seems to be an IBD trigger for me. I avoid artificial sweeteners cause they're triggers for me, but invert sugar is increasingly in things that say all natural or no artificial sweeteners, is it natural? what is it?
It is natural! Or, well, it uses natural ingredients. It's sucrose (a disaccharide, white sugar) split into glucose and fructose (monosaccharides) through a simple chemical process (boiling and optionally adding some acid).
Sucrose is the common kind of sugar that we use all the time; it is made up of two simpler sugars: fructose, which we often think of as "fruit sugar," and glucose, the most common carbohydrate in nature (it's the product of the Krebs cycle and it's the carbohydrate that your body turns into stored energy through glycolysis). Here's a diagram of a sucrose molecule:
Tumblr media
you can see that it already looks like two molecules, kind of, with just one oxygen atom in the center to hold it together. If you split this molecule with a chemical reaction, it will create distinct glucose and fructose molecules:
Tumblr media
(Glucose is on the left, fructose on the right).
If you want to make your own invert sugar you can do so on your own stovetop right now. All you have to do is mix sugar, water, and lemon juice.
Have you ever made simple syrup for sweet tea? Or made hard candy? Simple syrup is 1:1 white sugar and water. Hard candy is 4:2:1 white sugar, water, and sugar syrup. Invert sugar is a syrup in between those two which is about 2:1 sugar to water with a very small amount of acid added.
There are several reasons that bakers and confectioners will do this, including:
moisture - invert sugar is a humectant
texture - the addition of invert sugar can help control crystallization of sugar in candy-making
sweetness - invert sugar is slightly sweeter than white sugar
appearance - invert sugar helps things to brown faster
So invert sugar can be totally natural, it's easy to make at home, and it has lots of uses in cooking that are difficult to achieve without introducing more ingredients or ingredients that might change the appearance or structure of the final product. However, if you have issues with processing fructose, invert sugar is likely going to be a problem for you.
Honestly this kind of question (which I had a lot more of after getting diagnosed with food allergies and celiac disease!) is part of why I started getting more into cooking and more into learning about food production and nutrition. When you have to learn about hidden sources of corn in the American food system you have to learn a LOT about food and you come around firmly to the idea that "natural" on food product labels is at best useless and at worst misleading.
When you (you specifically, anon) are looking at a food label you're likely looking to see if it's going to cause problems for you. You're not really looking to see if it's natural, but "natural" has become a kind of shorthand for "no high fructose corn syrup" - if what you're avoiding is fructose, natural is not the word to look out for.

TWST Cast Food Order Series - Coffee Shop
Idk it seems like fun and I want to do their subway orders eventually so if you have a req drop it. Also, gonna update my tags Eventually, but this will be the first post that refers to Jack T., Che'nya, Najma, Neige, Falena, Rollo as 'twst side characters'
-----------------------------------------------
Heartslaybul
Riddle Typically, Riddle has a lot of rigidity regarding food and drink, and what he will or won't allow himself to have. However, as he starts to work through it all he eventually gets to the point where he feels comfortable ordering a small London Fog (Earl Grey Latte basically, with vanilla syrup) and a cake pop if he's feeling indulgent, though usually he just asks Trey for them. Even farther into the future, he'll indulge in getting himself a small white hot chocolate with 2 pumps of strawberry syrup because then it's basically drinking chocolate-covered strawberries....it just takes him a while to get there. (He always spells his name out when the barista asks, he learned after getting Ridelle on his cup)
Trey Whenever he makes candied violets, he also has violet syrup. He tends to carry a small vial on him when he goes out because if he's going to pay for tea, he's going to make sure it turns out perfectly. He typically gets a medium iced lemon herbal tea and he adds his syrup to it for just the right touch of sweetness. (Always gives a name like. Batman or some shit, especially when his siblings are around)
Cater Coffee connoisseur. You might think he's a basic bitch, but to me a basic bitch still means he's getting some sort of sweetener in his drinks and he is Not. Cater cannot STAND drinking a lot of drinks that go viral because they're so damn sweet. That all being said. Yeah, he's getting a large iced latte with skim milk. He won't have normal milk because of the fat content, but the other milk alternatives tend to have a sweetness to them naturally. He could get an iced black coffee or cappuccino, but he likes the ratio of a latte better. Iced black coffee is reserved for exam week LMAO it keeps him awake in more ways than one. Those spicy drinks that circulated at Starbucks? He definitely tried one. Didn't finish it. (Has had his name spelled as Carter. So. Many. Times.)
Deuce He likely won't have gone to a coffeeshop until he's at NRC so he's a little overwhelmed by the menu and what to order. I think he would go for a small frozen hot chocolate because it's familiar enough that he thinks it sounds good, but it's still something new and he doesn't know how to make it himself yet. Once he starts going more regularly though, I think he would really like REALLY sweet frappes. Like large cookie frappuccinos whether it be chocolate crumble or sugar cookie it does not matter lskjdfhlksdjf (has had his name spelled as Doose)
Ace Having a regular latte does not satisfy his sweet tooth, though he'll have one here and there. Ace likes trying lots of different drinks, but the one he always comes back to is a large iced white mocha, no whipped cream. (In relation to my MC, the no whipped cream thing was a change he made because he knows she likes eating the ice and he drinks slower than she does, so by the time she finishes the ice in her drink, he gets to pretend like he didn't time finishing his drink just in time to let her have the ice 'like a fucking weirdo, but okay' but the whipped cream always leaves a weird fatty residue on the ice that she hate). Ace is also a sucker for peppermint hot chocolate when it's in season. (Straight up had his name written as 'ass' on the cup which is the ONLY reason he doesn't tease Deuce about his spelling)
Savannaclaw (just assume pup/cubcups are implied LMAO)
Leona Ugh this pretentious bitch /lh. Flat white is too boring, lattes are the basic bitch drink, this has too much 'coffee flavour', this needs more milk YEAH I'M SURE IT DOES KITTY. Anyways, when he's alone, he gets himself a small cup of just steamed milk, with like a half pump of (sweet) vanilla syrup. When he's around other people he gets a Cafe Cubano, which is an espresso shot prepared with brown sugar. It's a small enough portion that's sweet enough he can get over not having milk in it, but he's not Jazzed about it LMAO he just doesn't want to get the milk in front of other people my poor baby man. He sometimes gets a Cortado, but he can never remember what to call it. (Refuses to give a name, just goes by the name of the order, or he's just called by his title)
Ruggie My man works so hard. He and coffee are best friends. He and Silver bond over coffee sometimes. It's beautiful slkdjfhlksdjfsdf In the mornings, he tends to make himself a large double-double coffee, which for non-Canadians means 2 milk, 2 sugar in drip coffee. In the afternoon, around 2pm, he makes himself a small iced dulce de leche latte. When he goes to coffeeshops, he goes because he wants something he can't make/imitate at home as easily....which would be a vanilla coconut cashew smoothie. (Vanilla ice cream, coconut milk, cashew butter and protein powder). He would have a fresh fruit smoothie, but he can't enjoy fresh fruit without feeling like he should share it with his siblings because it's a hot commodity, it's a luxury for them. Frozen fruit is cheaper and easy to make into smoothies, so he makes them a lot at home. Of course, if he's at a coffeeshop, he's going to get a donut too. (Has never paid attention to the spelling of his name, doesn't care)
Jack He cannot handle caffeine my poor baby, he would be so jittery and anxious. He is a fresh fruit smoothie guy, and also he cannot stand matcha (Vil made him try it at one point). He likes blueberry-acai banana smoothie with greens, yogurt, and protein powder. Otherwise, Jack will just get a small chamomile tea with honey as sweetener. (His name is always right and his tail wags when the barista throws on a happy face next to his name.)
Octavinelle
Azul Azul tends to drink Milky Oolong tea, because of the health benefits. Does he like the flavour. Debateable, I don't know I haven't had this drink I can't tell you if I think he does or not. Probably. I read somewhere it kinda tastes nutty or like Danish cookies. When he goes to an actual shop though, he tends to get an Americano. (Assule, Asul, Azhoole, he tends to spell his name out for people now too)
Jade Not a coffee or sweets guy. We know that he's fascinated by the varie-tea (badum tss and I immediately get hit in the head with a chancla) that tea has to offer. I think Jade has had caffeine once and like. You know how humans. kind of have exposure to caffeine as kids even in small amounts, like in chocolate, or in stuff like certain sodas. Mers don't get that. They don't get that exposure at all. Jade on caffeine was a terrifying experience for any and everyone involved and he is not allowed to have more, nor will he allow himself to have any because dear great seven he swears he saw God and he doesn't even know who that is. That being said, Jade likes Jasmine herbal tea, while he prefers it piping hot and just a touch sweet, he isn't opposed to having it iced. His favourite blend is good either way, as it has rose hips, hibiscus and orange peel. He also enjoys Chaga mushroom tea. (His name is generally spelled correctly)
Floyd Like I said. Mers don't get that exposure to caffeine that other species in TWST do get. However Floyd, to me, has ADHD. And what does my ADHD do to me sometimes when I drink caffeine? I pass the fuck out, orrrr I'm finally able to focus because caffeine is a stimulant and makes everything better!! (This is why I would down an extra large iced vanilla latte right before exams LMAO) Floyd doesn't care so much about the flavour than he does it's effects, so he generally just asks what drink has the most caffeine and gets that, usually a large nitro cold brew, and he tells the barista to surprise him with a flavour just NOT salted caramel flavour. (He gives a random name every time)
Scarabia
Kalim ADHD 2.0 but addiction is just a general worry for his family, so Jamil makes sure he only makes herbal teas, and smoothies. That being said, left unattended Kalim would order whatever tea a barista recommends. Otherwise, he gets a mango lassi. He also often enjoys any flavour of lemonade, carbonated or otherwise.
Jamil Aw man. This guy. Needs so much caffeine, and as much as he enjoys tea, Kalim only serves herbal tea, but Jamil doesn't mind too much how sweet he makes it. When he's in the mood for it, Jamil will make his own chai blend. However, when he wants caffeine, he'll consume it in a way that would make Rollo think he's a demon. He will order a nitro cold brew, and a 2 bags of green tea on the side. He will then microwave the cold brew to make it hot and steep the green tea in it. Using Starbucks as a baseline, a large nitro cold brew has 345 mg of caffeine. One bag of green tea has anywhere between 30-50 mg of caffeine. A 'safe' amount of caffeine to consume in a day is considered 400 mg.
Pomefiore
Vil We already know that Vil's favourite food is homemade smoothies- So when he goes out of his way to go to a coffeeshop, he's not going to pay for a smoothie, unless it's right after a run with Jack. Vil's order fluctuates with the weather and time of day. If he's getting something in the early morning (5:30am-7am) and it's cool outside, he's getting a flat white with soy milk. If it's warm out, he'll get an iced Macchiato with soy milk and cinnamon. If it's mid-late morning (8am-11am) and it's cool out he gets a medium americano, though if he's feeling indulgent he gets a honey vanilla tea latte with skim milk. If it's warm out, he gets a medium vanilla oat milk cold brew or a strawberry acai lemonade if he's again, feeling indulgent. He won't consider drinking anything until about 2pm, which, if he needs something caffeinated he goes for an iced matcha latte with oat milk regardless of the weather. In the evening, (4pm-6pm) he avoids caffeine and will either drink a small decaf iced lavender latte with oat milk or decaf green tea. Once in a while, Vil will try ordering something new. If he ends up liking it, that time of day is associated with that drink, so that would be the time of day he orders it again. the Vil in my head is telling me just how hard he has to mask when a coffeeshop doesn't have the thing he wants to order and how some of these orders. he doesnt even like. but he knows that they won't be out of the ingredients because it's Just the coffee and a milk alternative. So They Can't say they Can't Make it so he doesn't have to worry about needing to mask.his day is ruined if it's a day he wants to be indulgent and they dont have the ingredients but he has to try and hide like he is crying on the inside and he feels stupid about it because its just a drink I cant tell if it's OCD or Autism but there's a little something funky going on/lh
Rook He is well aware of the effects caffeine has on him. They aren't bad per ce, but he doesn't particularly appreciate the gastrointestinal consequences. He also doesn't really find the appeal in super sweet drinks. Most of the time, Rook just wants iced lemon water, though on nights he struggles to wind down enough to go to bed, he'll brew himself or order rooibos tea with a splash of milk. The smell is the most comforting thing about it, he remembers his sister used to make it for him.
Epel He says he's not a snob, yes he is, if you don't have apple cider, you suck, if you do have apple cider but it's a 'bad brand' you still suck, just a little less. That being said, a lot of coffee shops don't have apple flavoured drinks, and he likes making apple cider at home anyways. When Epel is out and about, he likes to order a large iced decaf maple latte. He always whispers the decaf part like it's a bad thing he can't actually have caffeine or else he turns into the squirrel from Hoodwinked. (Get's called Apple a lot, also Elle once or twice)
Ignihyde
Idia Do you seriously think this guy goes to a coffeeshop? No, it's 3am, he's on UberEats/CarriageBites, he's put in an order for a bunch of energy drinks and some of those iced coffee bottles, he throws an energy drink and probably a salted caramel cold brew in one of those SUS slushy cups, makes it slushy and downs it in less than two minutes. Get on his level. Noob. I say this as someone who drinks a near liter of an iced vanilla 'americano' in less than two minutes.
Ortho Is worried about his brother. He also loves the smell of cinnamon coffee cake.
Diasomnia
Malleus He's so lost in a coffee shop. He will spend a moment to read over the menu, realizes he needs to research the different kinds of coffee drinks before he feels comfortable ordering one, only for him to decide on having a coffee frappe. The caffeine has no effect on him so he drinks it purely for the taste.
Lilia Who do you think taught Idia to be a fucking caffeine gremlin. This motherfucker isn't even affected by the caffeine he just likes the taste of his abominable combinations and accidentally got Idia hooked. The only step Lilia doesn't do is the slush, he prefers his energy drink-coffee combo to be room temperature. Freak \lh
Silver He has Lilia as his father. Jamil and Ruggie as his peers. And Cater Diamond as a fellow coffee fanatic. This boy tries so hard to use caffeine to keep him awake, his coffee order scares the barista. (This was based an actual order I got from some guys FRIENDS because this poor dude was studying for engineering finals week, we were told not to worry about the price because they were willing to pay, and we had to give them like. Four warnings about the caffeine content. It ended up being 12 shots of espresso over ice in a 24 oz cup) He wants the biggest cup they can give him. He wants it filled with just straight espresso shots. Let me just iterate - one ounce of liquid espresso typically has about 63mg of caffeine. 12 espresso shots, using 63 mg caffeine as a baseline is 756 mg of caffeine. I don't know where that college student is now but god bless. I hope his friends took away the coffee at some point.
Sebek He doesn't like black coffee, I do think he likes particular types of coffee. Like the coffee that doesn't taste like coffee. However, his go-to order is still just a piping hot cup of hot chocolate. Also pleeeease give him the steamed milk art/latte art, he loves it more than he'll admit.
Others
Jack T. Jack has a running joke on Ace where he only drinks black coffee in front of him, each time claiming some sort of delicious or exotic flavour just for Ace to fall for it every time when he offers it and it's just black coffee...but every once in a while, it's magically cloaked Vietnamese iced coffee, but Jack won't tell Ace the name just to piss him off because Ace really likes it but he can't place what's different about it from normal coffee with sugar and milk.
Che'nya As chaotic as our favourite purple cat is, I think Che'nya is partial to a rich, thick French vanilla. I think he likes the smell more than he likes drinking it, but yeah, it's just a yummmmmmmmy drink. He gives his full name out and just. :3 at the barista.
Falena He has a latte macchiato, much like Leona, he likes his coffee to be milk heavy lmao
Najma She doesn't usually drink anything for caffeine, when she does though, it's usually her brother's chai LMAO, but she'll make it an iced chai latte. Unfortunately, I HC her as iron deficient so this isn't always. The Best Choice. When she wants a coffee flavour, she gets it in the form of ice cream or in a mocha.
Neige Doesn't drink caffeine because it's an addictive substance. Yes Vil has mocked him in his bedroom at some hour in the morning hate listening to an interview with him in it. Fucking. Golden Child. (lh) When Neige goes to a coffeeshop he usually just goes to pick up a pastry and tip the barista. He sometimes has chamomile tea before bed but with enough sugar to rot your teeth.
Rollo Every once in a while he treats himself to a decaf con panna and madeleines on the side.
----------------------------------------------------- Rapid Fire OC Orders Vizzie - Iced white mocha, no whipped cream, or iced vanilla americano/latte
Aspen - matcha latte with lavender foam and honey
Oisin - Bicerin with cinnamon on top
Cory - Romano (weirdo) /lh ----------------------------------------------------- Taglist: *DM or send an ask if you'd like to be added @fluffle-writes

Cintamani Sap
Gin, orange liqueur, lemon juice, honey syrup, ghee butter, and blue food coloring
Tumblr media
Nathan Drake raced a madman and his entire army to the steps of Shambhala.
I couldn't believe it when I first heard the story. And who could blame me? Especially because Victor Sullivan was the first person I heard it from. But Chloe Frazer did corroborate it and eventually Nathan Drake himself showed up at my bar with a small jar full of blue resin to prove it. He said what he had was all that was left of the mythical Cintamani Stone. Don't tell Nate, but I may have "accidentally" spilled them across the bar and pocketed one of the small blue pebbles in the chaos. Lucky I did too. I had no idea at the time, but that little bit of resin eventually saved my life.
According to legend, the Cintamani Stone was a jewel that would give its wielder great power and grant their every wish, but in reality it wasn't a stone at all. It was actually a massive piece of amber from the Tree of Life, hidden at the center of the lost city of Shambhala. The tree possessed incredible medicinal properties, like aloe vera, arnica, calendula, willow bark, yarrow, and other healing plants but on a much greater scale. When you consume the sap from the Tree of Life, your natural healing rapidly accelerates and you gain boundless energy. It can even halt aging. But over time, too much of the sap changes you. It stains your skin blue and your teeth black, and it gets inside your mind. You become dependent on it, a Guardian dedicated to protecting Shambhala and the source of the sap at all costs.
The Cintamani Sap cocktail is my attempt to capture the energizing and refreshing nature of the Tree of Life. Gin was chosen as the base because the prominent juniper flavor provides a piney, resinous taste. Ghee butter adds texture and flavor and harkens to butter tea, a popular drink in the Himalayas and surrounding regions. The honey syrup, in addition to sweetening the cocktail, thickens it slightly for a more sap-like consistency and a drop of blue food coloring gives the perfect color to match the Cintamani Stone.
CINTAMANI SAP
2 oz. gin 1 oz. dry curaçao (orange liqueur) 0.75 oz. lemon juice 0.75 oz. honey syrup 0.25 oz. ghee butter 1 drop blue food coloring Melt the ghee butter on a spoon over a flame or in a microwave. Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with pebble ice or crushed ice. Shake and strain through a fine mesh strainer onto fresh ice in a Mai Tai or double Old Fashioned glass. Garnish with a blue rock candy stick and an orange slice or peel.
I originally made the Cintamani Sap with a London Dry gin, specifically Bombay Sapphire, but it works wonderfully with a more citrus forward gin like Plymouth as well. Some of the ghee butter solidifies as you shake the drink so straining with a fine mesh strainer is important. The butter adds to the taste and texture of the drink, but there shouldn't be big butter flakes in it.
For the orange liqueur, I strongly recommend Pierre Ferrand's Dry Curaçao. As a replacement, Grand Marnier or other decent brandy based orange liqueurs would be fine. You could use blue curaçao which would also eliminate the need for the food coloring, but most commercially available blue curaçaos (and cheap orange liqueurs in general) are sickly sweet. If you use one, I would probably adjust the amount of honey syrup down to balance out the extra sweetness you'd get.
The recipe for honey syrup can be found here.

Imagine vanilla triplets with a thembo reader who just thinks they're dating one person
So hot-
Days like this you could truly appreciate your partner's frosty exterior. It goes without saying that dating a humanoid made of everyone's favorite frozen treat and the events leading up to your relationship were beyond bizarre, but at this point and heat you didn't really care to ask anymore questions. You laid in bed with your icy lover at your side, their fingers in your mouth and towels placed beneath them - fans centered on the both of you. Like with most things, you didn't question where they managed to find so many devices and simply appreciated their efforts to keep you and themselves warm. They were as sweet as they tasted - when they wanted to be.
With a gentle pat to your jaw, they motion for you to bite down as they sit up - kissing your cheek as their finger is severed; growing back almost immediately. "Those ice packs should be frozen by now. If you still wanna nibble on me it's best if I go grab them.
You lick the ice cream stain in the print of a kiss off your cheek, groaning at the lose of your personal cooler. "Hurry back."
A giggle.
"Cute.. I'll be back before you know it."
You sink into your pillow as they leave. Even with fans surrounding you at full power, life without your creamy companion was agony. Every second that ticked by felt like your skin was melting into your sheets. You'd be a puddle before they returned - which was quite ironic considering their typing. Weight settles at the end of your bed, cool air crawling up your body and skin as the weight shifts upwards. You open your eyes as cream hits your cheek - a snicker painted on your lover's lips as they lower their body to yours.
"Poor babe. Practically wasting away.... Want me to make you feel better?"
You faintly nod, exhausted of all motor functions.
"A "yes please" would've been nice."
Starting at your neck, the ice cream fiend licks up your sweaty skin under their tongue reaches your lips and presses heavy against them - a ring of white coating as the faux slips through. The shutter you feel as they sample your flesh jolts through your teeth, but you could hardly care. You taste the salt of your skin briefly before it melts into their natural flavor. It was different from you remembered. Thicker, more savory and bold with that sweet undertone. You noticed the difference before, but true to your motto you never really brought it up. You really couldn't at the time with their tongue and cream filling your mouth and throat.
You whine as they break. "Don't worry, love. I'll be back shortly with a little surprise. Tell me, cherries or sprinkles?"
"Whatever."
"Got it." With one more sweet kiss, they hop out of bed - skipping out the door. Almost as soon as they leave, the cold metal of spoon hits your bottom lip.
"Y/n? I'm making you a sundae, but I wanted to know if you'd like it before I wasted all the ingredients. Open?"
You do as told. The ice cream, again, has changed consistency. Lighter, and more delicate in flavor - blended with the syrup and natural sweeteners they threw in.
"Do you like it?...."
You raise a thumb. They cover their mouth to muffle their cries of glee.
"Ah! I'm so happy, I could cry... I'll go finish right away!"
Once again - you're alone. The sunlight bleeds through the cracks of the currents and upon your scent body. You cry, "I'm gonna die."
The light fades; the rip of duct tape sealing its fact. Cool air joins your right and you sigh in content - joined by that same air on your left. Soon enough, the cold completely envelopes you as a body settles in your lap - a head on your right arm and hands wrapped around your left.
"Wait a minute-" Your eyes peel open. Three ice cream people. One in your lap and two at your sides. The one sitting on you squeaks at your puzzled expression, hair hiding their frantic eyes and freckles you never noticed until this angle. In actuality, the speckles littered their entire body. The one to your right hand their hair braided down, and the other a wild mane. You for some reason just thought they liked to change their hair style frequently. You look to your left.
"Nilla?"
They shake their head, plucking a cherry stem off their tongue as they point over at your right. "That's Nilla. I'm Vani."
You look up. "You?"
They play with the spoon in the glass they hold. "Bean...."
"So, wait - there's three of you?"
Nilla shrugs. "We were sure you knew considering you didn't bring it up. Is this an issue with you?"
"Not really... if you guys don't have a problem with me not being able to tell the difference between your flavors."
"We're willing to look past it so long as there's no other flavors or humans in your life.
"Don't think we'll have a problem with that first one, and we'll tackle that second thing when I'm not five seconds from death."
Bean offers you their spoon. "P-please don't die! Here, eat this?"
Vani hugs your arm tighter. "I'm sure they'd prefer something more from the heart - or the tongue."
"S-stop being gross.. Y/n, which would you like more?"
Your mouth is to busy nursing another of Nilla's fingers to reply.
"Y/n!"

Probability figures in everyday decisions we make. Consider the public’s sentiment toward genetically modified organisms—GMOs. Reactions tend to be bimodal, depending on your politics, itself a warning flag. The truth and efficacy of science should never correlate with your political views.
The food chemical company Monsanto, now owned by Bayer, developed a genetically modified variant of corn that was completely resistant to glyphosate, a weed-killing herbicide marketed under the name Roundup, which they also developed. Monsanto scientists genetically removed their corn’s susceptibility to the chemical. This potent combo—Monsanto’s GMO corn coupled with Monsanto’s weed killer—enabled farmers to spray their entire crops and have the herbicide kill everything but the corn. The Vermont ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s uses corn syrup as a sweetener for some of their products. (Yes, I too was surprised to learn this.) News that some of their ice creams had trace amounts of glyphosate from the corn used in their syrup created a media dust-up. In response, Ben & Jerry’s decided to stop using GMO corn syrup altogether, even though the one-part-per-billion detection levels of glyphosate were far below US and European standards. Since many people who buy Ben & Jerry’s ice cream lean left—aligned with the company’s generally progressive views on all things—Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Holdings Inc. judged this ban to be a wise business decision.
Let’s look closer at what happened there. Every substance you could possibly ingest, food and otherwise, has a calculated lethal dose associated with it, measured by what’s called LD50. That’s the dose per kilogram of body weight where 50 percent of the people who consume that amount will die quickly. These data often come from tests on laboratory mammals such as mice. There’s another metric, called no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL), which addresses the long-term influence of a substance on your health and is more sensible when thinking about food safety. LD50 helps to make a different point. The smaller its value for a substance, the more lethal it is. As such, tables of LD50s can be quite illuminating. Here’s a sampling:
Sucrose (table sugar) | 30 grams per kilogram
Ethanol (common alcohol) | 7 grams per kilogram
Glyphosate (Roundup) | 5 grams per kilogram
Table Salt | 3 grams per kilogram
Caffeine | 0.2 grams per kilogram
Nicotine | 0.0065 grams per kilogram
The most lethal substance on this hand-picked list is nicotine. Caffeine looks quite potent too. Just drink about eighty demitasse cups of espresso if you want to die from it. Next comes salt.
The least deadly on the list is sugar, as you might expect. Notice further that glyphosate is less lethal than table salt, but not by much. Actually none of this concerns us here. What matters is what happens to a 150 lb. (70 kg) person who eats Ben & Jerry’s ice cream—a fact I calculated but relegated to my Forbidden Twitter file, where it remains, simply for how disturbing it would be. In social media, I never intend to be disturbing:
You would need to consume four hundred million pints of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for its trace amounts of glyphosate to kill you. But after only 20 pints you will die from its sugar content.
Ben & Jerry’s made the right corporate decision if it protected their profits. Although they could have also used the occasion as a teaching moment—a mind-blowing lesson on comparative risk. But that works only if people are open to learning. In modern times, many of us don’t satisfy that criterion, perhaps because, according to the nineteenth-century British essayist Walter Bagehot,
One of the greatest pains to human nature is the pain of a new idea.
It is, as common people say, so “upsetting;” it makes you think that, after all, your favourite notions may be wrong, your firmest beliefs ill-founded.… Naturally, therefore, common men hate a new idea, and are disposed more or less to ill-treat the original man who brings it.

@the-valiant-valkyrie 's DST teas review (VERY LATE)
~~~~~~~~~~~
WX-78 Blend
Tumblr media
By itself, it smells very herbal, the lemon aroma is very distinguishable and pleasant. I added about a teaspoon or so, and brewed it for the recommended time on the page. At first it tastes somewhat like chamomile, then, I added sugar and lemon juice and it started taking on a more homey vibe. The lemon certainly brought out the distinct black tea flavor + strengthened the natural lemon flavoring.
Update: made it a second time, this time added two and a half teaspoons of sugar, 2 slices of lemon and a touch of lemon zest (for about 3/4 of the 400ml mug filled.) It was AMAZING, very pleasant flavor, lightly sour and sweet, brings back memories, legit became one of my favorite teas, I'd definitely buy a bigger bag at some point in the future if it'd still be available.
All in all I would highly recommend it, If you're fond of relaxing teas such as this one.
First impression: 6/10
Current impression: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
(forgive my shitty phone lighting)
Walani Blend
Tumblr media
Upon first smelling it, it's very fruity and exotic, that smells only intensifies upon brewing.
Quite sour by itself, adding a tad of sugar (about 2 and a half teaspoons per half a 400ml mug for me, again) then it's just a right mix of sweet and sour, the flavor somewhat reminds me of raspberry. You can pick out the orange and mango if you feel for it, but they're not that intense. The coconut and apple are the most pronounced in the aftertaste.
(Overall, very enjoyable, especially on mornings and late nights 6.5/10)
Tumblr media
Lunar Blend
Tumblr media
The coconut gives it a very nutty feel, with the added scent of flowers.
When brewed, dull and slightly bitter without any add-ons, although the coconut and chocolate chips are especially prominent. When added some cream and sweetener, it becomes more light, it doesn't have an especially compelling flavor, but it's not bad either.
(Then again I'm not an expert on tea, 98% of the time I just drink black tea)
For me personally, it's a 5/10
Tumblr media
Willow blend
Tumblr media
When first smelling it, the dark chocolate and strawberry are the most distinguishable, cinnamon is only there if you really smell for it. After brewing, both of the formerly mentioned scents mixed further.
By itself it's very bitter obviously, but after adding some cream and sugar, it tastes more like coffee with a note of strawberry and cinnamon.
There's also a herbal after taste.
Overall pleasant , though people who like their tea with milk/cream would enjoy it the most.
First impression: 5.5/10
Second impression 6/10
Wormwood Blend
Tumblr media
Straight out of the box it has a wild berry feel to it with a flowery scent.
After brewing it, momentarily the mint leaves make themselves known, but after tasting, they're only present in the after taste.
The chamomile becomes very distinct, with the flowers on the side. I can taste some hibiscus, orange and the apples, but they're not that present.
I added a bit of lemon and sugar and the taste immediately changed into a more comforting sweet tea.
Overall 7.5/10 for me
Tumblr media
Woodie and Lucy Blend
Tumblr media
When fiest opened, it smells very nutty and sweet. The apple and the safflower are barely noticable, you'd have to seriously smell it, in order to feel them.
Upon brewing, the fruity scent catches up to the nutty one, and it becomes sort of a mix of the two.
At first I added some almond milk and maple syrup, but it just didn't stick with me. It was alright, but there was just something missing.
The second time I added some UHT cream and condensed milk and JACKPOT, this was it (at least for me) the cream softened up the flavor and the condensed milk made it sweeter, more cozy, it adapted perfectly for my taste.
First impression: 5/10
Second impression 7.5/10
All in all, very nice teas! I recommend y'all try them!
Can clowns be diabetic? Do they have pancreases?? Do they have blood??
(For context, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder, that stems from the pancreas and affects blood sugar among other things.)
Clowns can indeed develop diabetes!
If you know or have a diabetic clown, you can replace standard processed sugars with more natural sugars like agave, maple syrup, honey, or fruits! However, I would avoid 'artifical sweeteners' because these can increase the risk of stroke and heart disease!
Proposal based on your food post and some things in Fallout.
:readmore:
Homemade sodas and sweet drinks are incredibly common based on home recipes passed down through the generations.
In Fallout new Vegas, and in Fallout 4 you can make drinks such as Nuka-Cola.
Filtering water and making it drinkable will be a big priority wherever you go. But making it palatable will also be a big goal.
Local settlements will probably mix sweeteners like syrup, juices, or even honey to mix it in the water.
Tea will be very popular too with all kinds of local teas made from local plants, sweetened with local sweeteners, and traded or even sold to each other.
Tea has the advantage of being boiled, filtered, and flavored making it a popular drink with massive variants between region to region and even settlement to settlement.
Brahmin milk will have a lot of nutrients and apparently good for treating radiation so odds are its also used as a medicine and a big part of a lot of diets.
Some rare drinks may still be possible but take a lot of work such as coffee, and ice cream.
Coffee needs specific growth and a lot of space to grow. So maybe it'll grow in small quantities.
There's ways to make ice cream without machines but it takes a lot of salt, ice, and milk. So you'd have to be very wealthy or very well located to have it
Shaved ice with simple syrups and fruits may make good treats in areas where there's a lot of ice
I fully agree with all of this! Not including it was probably a bit of an oversight on my part, but this is exactly the kind of extrapolation and worldbuilding I was aiming for.
Soda was invented in the mid 1800s, so I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility for people to have reinvented soft drinks. Originally, the water was taken from springs that were naturally carbonated and today, we can do it at home with compressed CO2. Even if the drinks aren't carbonated, I totally believe and agree with the idea that they're making sweet drinks.
I was going to mention in the original post and forgot, but lemons? Those things totally still exist. Citrus is too much of a botanical freak not to have survived. It might not be lemons (or limes, or oranges) as we know them, but they are OUT THERE and that means lemonade is real.
Tea is canon within the realm of fallout because you can brew several different varieties in 76. Also, hot drinks are comforting, especially in the winter and I think it's totally reasonable to think that new brews have popped up with the addition Coffee grows in Mexico at a similar latitude to Florida and parts of the southern united states, so I think you could claim that certain strains have been cultivated and grown in those areas, though it might be rare and extremely expensive.
Ice cream's origins are known to reach back as far as the second century B.C., although no specific date of origin nor inventor has been undisputably credited with its discovery. We know that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. Biblical references also show that King Solomon was fond of iced drinks during harvesting. During the Roman Empire, Nero Claudius Caesar (A.D. 54-86) frequently sent runners into the mountains for snow, which was then flavored with fruits and juices.
Ice cream is one HUNDRED percent a thing in the wasteland. The milk and cream is easy to source from Brahmin milk. Cane sugar can be grown in Florida and Louisiana, so it's not unreasonable to think that that's another rare and expensive import. It would be easier and cheaper to get your sugar from tree sap or malt grain or reduced fruits, but cane sugar is out there. Making ice cream is a pretty popular thing for kids to do -- put some rock salt and ice in a bag with cream, sugar, and vanilla, and shake it until it freezes. On the coast, salt is probably pretty abundant, even if it's time consuming to harvest, but vanilla is probably one spice that nobody has access to in the wasteland.
Ice houses and cold cellars are probably pretty common in the wasteland, so ice could be available all year round. Plus, refrigeration is useful in the process of preserving foods rather than canning or bottling.
I think it's important to keep in mind that people are smart, and just because the bombs dropped, we didn't revert back to the stone age. The knowledge of canning, bottling, making jams and preserves, cold storage, curing meat, making cheese -- all that knowledge is old. Just because modern technology makes it easier doesn't mean people couldn't do it two hundred years ago. If the knowledge is lost, logic and human ingenuity will rediscover it eventually.
