Dream Blog: My Brain's Voice

September 10th, 2016: 

I slid down a tunnel of green jello for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, this river of green jello spat me out onto a courtyard in front of a movie theater. No sky or clouds stood out in the distance. The white void still engulfed this building that I stood before, and I had no clue why a movie theater appeared during this natural spiritual free form cleansing therapy. Without hesitation, I walked into the movie theater. A Polish rugby team lingered in the lobby as if they were waiting impatiently for a game. I waved to them, and they immediately recognized me. These athletes huddled around me. A few of them shook my hand or patted me on the shoulder. I didn’t remember any of their names, but I congratulated them on winning The Rugby Championship. The team captain explained to me that several European countries, not just Poland, recently joined the same rugby conference as Argentina, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand so that the sport of rugby could be more internationally recognized. While we laughed and told each other more stories, the manager of the movie theater unlocked the biggest theater in the building. He clapped four times to get our attention and announced that we could now enter the theater for the Super Smash Bros. Tournament. I had no clue that the Polish ruby team was waiting to compete in this event. They cheered, clapped, and sprinted into the theater. I followed them obediently but with little to no gusto. We all received a controller for a Nintendo 64 by a few ushers near the front entrance. The athletes scattered throughout the theater and found a seat. I took my time walking towards the middle rows, and I decided to sit on a seat at the end of one of the rows. Everyone had to take turns playing a round of this awesome video game on such a huge screen since only four people can play at a time.

We all played as our favorite characters for about four hours. I chose either Link or Samus as my player whenever it was my turn to fight. Then, our movie theater turned into a spaceship and flew into space. The Polish rugby team and I floated through the theater. The big screen disappeared and we all swam through this rectangular hole with our personal seat from the theater and entered a purple sky filled with blue stars. An even bigger screen appeared before us, and the logo for the movie, Doctor Strange, appeared before us. A school of All-Efficient AirPods swam toward us and circled around us until the manager of the movie theater appeared on this screen in space. He awkwardly stared at us. His eyes darted around as if he was examining every single pixel on his computer screen. I could tell that he was thinking through what he was about to tell us. I felt like Captain Kirk from Star Trek. 

 Each set of this special headphones broke off from the pack and chose a pair of ears to fit in among all of us. The last pair of AirPods squirmed around inside my ears until it felt like that I placed these headphones past my ears’ auricle and into the ear canal.  My entire body tingled with excitement as I floated in space in a movie theater seat. 

He promulgated, “Hello everyone! My name is Greg, and welcome to my Outer Space Movie Series. That’s right! You are right now in space, and you are able to hear me because of your awesome headsets. They are the All-Efficient AirPods! You are able to hear me in space right now because these little headphones can send off waves that can communicate with black holes and other galaxies. They have their own Wi-Fi that can reach anywhere in all galaxies. That means that you can use this headphones to access Wi-Fi when you are in the middle of nowhere, whether you are driving down an interstate with exits that are few and far between or if you are hiking up the mountains and you somehow get lost. The All-Efficient AirPods have helped a lot of life forms that you never knew existed, including characters similar to all of the good guys and bad guys in Doctor Strange. Welp, without further ado, here is Doctor Strange! Enjoy!”  

The screen disintegrated and turned black. Then, we watched Doctor Strange. 

During about the last thirty minutes of Doctor Strange, my head felt like that someone poured gasoline all over it, lit a match, and dropped it onto my head. This burning sensation worsened and became unbearable during the scene when Doctor Strange and Mordo arrive in Hong Kong. When Doctor Strange confronted Dormammu, my brain yelled at me incoherently. Shooting pain shot from my head and through my arms and legs. I yelled at the top of my lungs, but the Polish rugby team couldn’t hear me. They could only hear the movie. My face contorted as my brain yelled at me. I have never heard one of my organs yell at me from inside my body. My auditory system reacted differently to my brain’s vicious shouting, as if it was foaming at the mouth. My body thrashed around in my seat, and I placed my hands on my forehead, hoping that the pain would just go away.

I eventually deciphered what my brain kept screaming at me. In a low, demonic voice, my brain roared, “Catharsis. Catharsis. Catharsis. Catharsis. Catharsis. You are now entering the catharsis stage. Your demons, your sins have been exorcised. They’ve been exonerated. Catharsis. Catharsis. Catharsis. Catharsis. Don’t let my voice fool you. I am not evil. Catharsis. Catharsis. Catharsis. “Are you sure?” I mumbled out of fear.

Then, my brain reassured to me in a softer, more comforting tone, “Yes, I know that you’re in a lot of pain, but the angels of the Lord will guide you to the final stage really soon. We are currently using your brain to help you become completely purified. This discomfort is temporary. Hold fast to the Lord your God! This cathartic arrest requires us to use your brain to open your heart and your mind to what awaits you in the final stage. Catharsis!”

“OK,” I replied, still trembling. 

I watched the last several minutes of Doctor Strange, including the mandatory post-credit scenes. The rest of the Polish rugby immediately went back to the spaceship, except for me. I couldn’t move, but my seat slowly floated away from everyone else. With no warning, my seat accelerated at hyper speed into space. Everything around me turned into a dizzying blur, and my pair of All-Efficient AirPods stayed in my ears for the entire time.

Would you consider self-care and other things like that to be a form of devotional act to the gods if you go about it a certain way or with a certain mindset? Sorry if that doesn't make sense; I'm not sure how else to phrase it.

hello lovely <3 what a great question. i personally consider self-care as an obligatory act of piety for those following Hellenic Polytheism. not in the sense I think you have to do it in order to worship or that you must ritualize it, but that you must care for yourself before you can properly and healthily worship the Theoi.

helpol is an antiseptic religion. one of the widespread beliefs/practices among Greeks was that of miasma and the importance of ritual cleanliness. this was particularly important back then because they didn't have soap and hot showers. the average Hellas were working in very dirty trades (blacksmithing, farming, seafaring, etc). when youre consistently dirty, it's only natural they would ritualize keeping clean for their Divine

miasma is the neutral dirtiness of the mortal world. all of earth and all mortal creatures generate miasma because we are fated to come in contact with death/the underworld. it's also because the natural world dirties us via dirt and such. different poli had different superstitions and rituals surrounding miasma, but almost all understood the importance of cleansing it. it was believed that those afflicted with too much miasma would succumb to things such as sickness, ailments, bad luck, hubris, and more.

i do want to stress that being miasmic doesn't mean mortals are seen as disgusting or gross. I urge you to look at miasma the way you would the dirt on your hands after gardening. its dirty, but it isn't inherently harmful. if you let your hands stay that dirty, you'll eventually consume more and more of it and fall ill. miasma works similarly to germs. they're all around us, but it only becomes a problem when we're overwhelmed with them.

as people reconstructing helpol, i certainly believe the importance of cleanliness still applies. some, including the Hellas, believed you shouldn't come in contact with the Theoi if you're contaminated with miasma. this is because the Theoi are free from such impurities and it's respectful not to share your pollution. i personally don't take it this far, i believe the Theoi have anti-miasmic properties and don't mind being around afflicted mortals. still, I do my best to cleanse myself and wash my hands before worship. though, I always completely cleanse before formal ritual

so, to answer your question, I not only think it's a devotional act i believe taking care of yourself is inherently pious in our religion. i believe the Theoi will always ask us to participate in self care before worship, because self care is directly tied to healthy worship. this includes mental and physical health on top of cleanliness. caring for your mind, taking your meds, going to therapy, eating the best you can, consistently washing your hands, wearing a mask in crowded spaces—all are acts of Hellenic piety.

it can also be a specific devotional act like you said. i occasionally clean house for Hestia, and in the spring I clean everything out for Kore's return and rebirth. every time I clean my room, I clean my shrines too. sometimes the only reason I can will myself to shower is because I'm doing it as a devotional act. i have a Hellenic friend who specifically buys soap with bay leaves as a devotion to Apollon for both bodily and spiritual cleanliness every time they wash their hands. anything can be a devotion, and cleaning and self care is the best of the best

I think it's worth adding that even with all I've said, the Theoi won't abandon ship due to things like mental health, being busy, or disability hindering your ability to cleanse or clean. if so my chronic depression room would have driven Them away years ago. like I said, i believe the Theoi cannot be contaminated with human miasma and that some are miasmic Themselves. in my experience, They will guide and encourage your (mental, physical, & spiritual) health practices. if you cannot do it for yourself, do it for the Theoi

Dream Blog: The Encounter with the Bald Man Again

September 6th, 2016:

I floated around in a white room, and I couldn’t hear a single sound. The knot in my stomach abandoned me. My headache ceased its throbbing. My sinuses cleared up. My body felt fully recharged. Then, I felt myself falling down, as if I was pushed off a cliff or a diving board. The speed of this free fall increased until I landed on a rocking chair. My impact didn’t break the rocking chair. I sat there. I didn’t blink, move, or even breathe. My whole body just froze. A table landed in front of me with an ear-piercingly loud thud, which echoed throughout the massive white room. A man sprinted towards me, and he looked familiar. Once I recognized this mad man, my face lit up out of a combination between excitement and fear. The bald man in a trench coat from Savannah, Georgia sprinted towards like a football player trying to score a touchdown. Although he appeared as if he was going to run straight through the table, he stopped at one of the edges. He looked at me and moved his head around to make sure that there was nothing with me. This bald guy from Savannah, Georgia screamed as loud as he could. Then, he grabbed wads of money from inside his trench coat and threw it in the air. Several hundred dollar bills fluttered past me. I still did not move, for I did not know what this guy was going to do next. The bald man then stood still and gave me a random lecture about The Shepheardes Calender. He cleared his throat and spoke eloquently.       

The bald man explained:

“Listen up. I’m about to make three crucial points about a work that I love reading over and over. It’s called The Shepheardes Calender. You will eventually have to read this masterpiece if you want to live. This is my first point. The title The Shepheardes Calender is at the top of the page. The is completely capitalized above the remaining title. There is also no apostrophe in Shepheardes in order to acknowledge the importance of possession. Most importantly, the title is misspelled as well. Some words are also misspelled such as containing or months. There is also the presence of a grapheme, which is æ. The book is dedicated to Philip Sidney, but I notice that his name is in a very small font compared to the words, noble and vertvous. Below Philip Sidney, there is also the symbol that resembles a face. The misspelling indicates the lack of a dictionary. The order of the front page is the title, what it contains, entitlement, square design and printing information. The publisher and its location are at the bottom of the page just like many books nowadays. There is also a mention of the 1579. 1579 is also in the smallest font along with Philip Sidney. “Printed by Hugh Singleton” is also the biggest font on the whole page. It is even bigger than the font for The Shepheardes Calender. In the middle of the page, there is also a square symbol with geometric designs throughout it. The name of the editor is never mentioned either on the first page. I am aware that Hugh Singleton printed this book in London. Books could have not acknowledged editors whenever a book was printed and released.

Here is my second point. The purpose of the book is explained in a lengthy letter, which is titled the generall argument of the whole booke. The letter is in very small print and hard to read. The words appear to be weathered and clustered. The first letter of the actual is decorated with a black box and a figure with wings. The letter from E.K. is also in the exact font, or style, of the argument. The whole introductory portion of the book does not change. The Shepheardes Calender gives an illustration and poems for each month of the year. Modern versions would bring different fonts for the title and the poems for each month of the year. There would definitely still be illustrations in the modern versions for the work. Januarye is illustrated with a picture of shepherd looking at a city in the distant lands as he herds sheep. There is also a god-like figure in the clouds. Some modern books do have an illustrative picture at the beginning of a chapter, in a fashion similar to The Shepheardes Calender. The text for Januarye is written in the same font and meter for each stanza. The first letter for each line also lines up vertically. 

And finally, here is my third point. As I think about the authority associated with the work of poems, I also take into considerations such as who is it written for, how the author approached this task or how was the calendar received. I feel that the original work belongs to the author Spenser since he did compose The Shepeardes Calender. He is the original source of credibility.
