"In a landmark move towards ending statelessness, Thailand’s cabinet has approved an accelerated pathway to permanent residency and nationality for nearly half a million stateless people, marking one of the region’s most significant citizenship initiatives.
The decision announced on Friday [November 1, 2024] will benefit 335,000 longtime residents and members of officially recognized minority ethnic groups, along with approximately 142,000 of their children born in Thailand.
“This is a historic development,” said Ms. Hai Kyung Jun, UN refugee agency (UNHCR) Bureau Director for Asia and the Pacific. The measure is expected to dramatically reduce statelessness, addressing the situation of the majority of nearly 600,000 people currently registered as stateless in the country.
Thailand’s commitment to eradicating statelessness has positioned the Government as a leader in addressing this humanitarian challenge, the agency said.
The country recently pledged at the Global Refugee Forum 2023 to resolve statelessness and was among the founding members of the Global Alliance to End Stateless, an initiative launched by UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, in Geneva last month...
UNHCR has expressed its commitment to continue working closely with the Royal Thai Government on the implementation of this groundbreaking decision and to ending statelessness overall."

*Similar here meaning the people have some of the same or similar general features or traits as you, e.g. a Kenyan person moving to Ghana vs. a Kenyan person moving to Sweden.
"Similar" can be up to your personal interpretation. If you've moved to a country that has a lot of diversity, you could answer based on the race that has majority governmental power, or based on the narrower demographics of the region you moved into (e.g. someone who moved to Louisiana, US might answer differently than someone who moved to Kansas, US).
Anon went through this, and has been told it's a fairly standard thing to experience especially during puberty. They wonder how universal this actually is and if there's any difference based on whether you look like the people in your new country or not.

Might be a slightly inane question but is there any particular reason a French MC is from Cap-d'Ail instead of Paris or even Marseille?
Well, for one, it's a place I'm more familiar with where France is concerned, so I knew writing about what it looks like could be more personal. I have also been to Bologne and Paris, but Cap d'Ail I've always been quite fond of. One of my dearest friends were born and raised there, and her family have lived there for generations. Also, because it is close to Monaco on the French Riviera, it is quite touristy, so I thought that would be great background for MC's familiarisation with the English language and her fluency.
Paris I knew I didn't want to have as an option, because it wasn't a coastal city. I wanted the French location to have something that distinguishes it from Belfast and London--and I do feel like now Belfast comes as a good middle ground between the latter. I did consider Marseille because of its port and its high levels of immigration, but in the end Cap d'Ail felt so decided and locked and loaded in my brain that it was a no-brainer. Brilliant question!

Americans can also answer this, in fact I encourage that. If you are an American answering, it would be great if you took a more specific view of things, such as what state you’re from, into account as opposed to just your American nationality in general. If you have more than one nationality, if the answer for any of them is either of the first two options, please select one of those. If possible, it would be great if people could let me know what option they selected + where they’re from in the notes.
Thanks!!

It's sort of weird to explain, but i feel like it is xenophobic of north americans to treat south americans terrible on the basis that we make "racist" jokes. Because it has become something of a cultural artifact down here, we make jokes about asian people and jewish people and so on :3 and it is a beautiful tradition that i feel gets me discriminated from even tolerant spaces. This feels especially hypocritical of north americans when taking into account how their governments have been the ones responsible for the most harm (by far) to other peoples! It looks like yet another branch of twisted western ideology seeping into every culture, and i will not let it happen >:3
United States, you may manage to take our land, our economic independence, our country, but you will never take our racist jokes >>>:3

Slaves escaped frequently within the first generation of their arrival from Africa and often preserved their African languages and much of their culture and religion. African traditions included such things as the use of certain medicinal herbs together with special drums and dances when the herbs are administered to a sick person. Other African healing traditions and rites have survived through the centuries.
The jungles around the Caribbean Sea offered food, shelter, and isolation for the escaped slaves. Maroons sustained themselves by growing vegetables and hunting. Their survival depended upon their cultures, and their military abilities, using guerrilla tactics and heavily fortified dwellings involving traps and diversions. Some defined leaving the community as desertion and therefore punishable by death. They also originally raided plantations. During these attacks, the maroons would burn crops, steal livestock and tools, kill slavemasters, and invite other slaves to join their communities. Individual groups of maroons often allied themselves with the local indigenous tribes and occasionally assimilated into these populations. Maroons played an important role in the histories of Brazil, Suriname, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica.
There is much variety among maroon cultural groups because of differences in history, geography, African nationality, and the culture of indigenous people throughout the Western Hemisphere.

After some research, I was able to find out where all of the princesses are from. Here are my notes…
Snow White: Snow White was first published in Germany by the Brothers Grimm, in 1812, in their book Grimm's Fairy Tales. Because of this I assume the Disney version is from Germany.
Cinderella: Cinderella takes place in France and it is based on the French fairy tale by Charles Perrault, it says so in the credits. More proof is that all of the women at the ball have French names and Cinderella’s house is referred to as Château which is a french word.
Aurora: The French symbol the Fleur-de-lys can be found everywhere in the castle and in the credits. Plus, the credits it says the movie is based on the Charles Perrault version of Sleeping Beauty.
Ariel: Ariel is from Atlantica which is a kingdom that is located somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea. This is confirmed on Disney Wiki "Eric's Castle is located on the shore of a Mediterranean-like country". The official Disney Princess youtube channel has a video titled: Fun Facts About Ariel! How Many Do You Know? | Disney Princess, where it says that Ariel grew up in the Mediterranean and specifies that Eric’s caste is in Italy.
Belle: The movie literally says that it is set in France.
Jasmine: Ron Clements and John Musker, the directors of the film said that the movie was originally intended to be set in Baghdad, Iraq. However, it was changed to the fictional city of Agrabah during production due to the Gulf War in the early 1990s. Here is part of the interview:  “We kept it Baghdad in our first treatment, and then the Gulf War happened […] This can't be in Baghdad. So, I took letters and did a jumbled anagram and came up with Agrabah, Musker told E! News." Agrabah is an adaptation of Baghdad.
Pocahontas: The movie starts off with “In sixteen hundred seven We sail the open sea For glory, God, and gold And the Virginia Company”.
Mulan: It says so in the movie that it is set in China.
Tiana: The movie says that it takes place in New Orleans.
Rapunzel: In the TV show a satellite shot can be seen showing that Corona is located in central France. Mont Saint-Michel and Rocamadour (France) where some of the inspirations behind the kingdom. The video A Tangled World: Creating the Look on the Walt Disney Animation Studios YouTube channel explains that the executive producer wanted to make Rapunzel’s tower look like “the most charming B and B in the south of France”.
Merida: Scotland obvious clues in movie.
Moana: I guessed Samoa because she wears a Samoan-inspired ceremonial dress at one point in the movie. The song “We Know the Way” features more lyrics in Samoan than other Polynesian languages, and Motunui, the fictional island of the film, mostly drew inspiration from elements of the real-life island nations of Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga.
Anna and Elsa: Arendelle was based on multiple locations in Norway. The team behind Frozen visited Norway to gain inspiration, and you can see Nordic influence all throughout the movie.
Raya: It's difficult to figure out one specific country since Kumandra is based on multiple Southeast Asian countries.

with all the discussion of the partially set mc, i just wanted to say that the mc specifically being a european living in the US during this time is really interesting! especially with the choice of nationality. it's such a small moment, but i love being able to choose that leon's copy of madame bovary is borrowed from the mc if she's french.
if you feel like answering, what made you decide on a european mc for this story, and on those 3 backgrounds in particular? (not complaining, to be clear! i really enjoy the mc and the whole prologue)
There’ll be loads of trinkets like that wherever I can add them—I’m glad you noticed the Madame Bovary one!
I chose European because I knew I wanted her not to be from America like (almost) everyone else. I want the readers to follow the perspective of someone that isn’t from America at all, so they’re forced to take everything in with a sense of newness. I also knew that I wanted her to be from the Western world because I wanted to show how isolated America can be and how it exists as a complete other world in and of its own. Especially during the ‘60s-‘70s. The world was hell for everyone at this time, which I’ve been trying to find ways to show throughout with a diverse scope of characters; I can’t wait to introduce a Brazilian character somewhere along the lines, because the military-controlled government was such a terrifying thing.
As for the European backgrounds I chose, there were certain topics I wanted to cover as well as ensure that the MC is as in tune with what’s going on in her home country as she is with America:
The UK: Anarchism. The British Invasion—The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks etc. Immigration protests.
Northern Ireland: The Troubles and the IRA. The Riots in 1969 (So scary, by the way). Religious guilt and the Catholic Church.
France: May ‘68–so the riots in Paris that ensued due to what was happening in America (I find it interesting that the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War insight such a global anger with American perspective). French New Wave Cinema’s influence on filmmaking and American filmmaking.
Great question! I was hoping someone would ask about this.
Stay groovy!
