National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
A sweet union of two delicate layers, with frosty bliss in between, offering delightful respite on a warm day.
The cold twin bursts of chocolate with the soft hint of vanilla between, leading to a small explosion of flavor. A delight over a century old, and even more impressive is that it is still as liked today as it was back then. The very taste of delight for untold of summers, this is the celebration of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!
Learn about National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
If you have never had an ice cream sandwich before, you are seriously missing out! This is one of the most delicious ice cream treats. It is simple to make, but it is extremely tasty. An ice cream sandwich is simply a frozen dessert that has two cookies, wafers, or biscuits, with ice cream in the middle. It combines two amazing things; ice creams and biscuits. What more could you really want? It is not hard to see why this dessert is so popular, and so it is only right that we have a day to honor this amazing treat, isn’t it?
You may be wondering where this amazing idea came from and how many people enjoy it! There are lots of great facts regarding ice cream sandwiches, so you can spend your day digging a little bit deeper into this popular treat and when it all started out. We know that there were ice cream sandwiches available for sale by street vendors in New York from the late 1800s, and so it is definitely a treat that has been enjoyed for quite some time now! We know this because the ice cream sandwich was cited in an article in the New York Mail and Express in 1899. It said the following:
There are ham sandwiches and salmon sandwiches and cheese sandwiches and several other kinds of sandwiches, but the latest is the ice-cream sandwich.
If you are a fan of the ice cream cookie sandwich, we have San Francisco to thank for this. When it comes to building a delicious ice cream sandwich, cookies have become a much-loved alternative to the standard chocolate wafer. It is believed that this creation was invented by an ice cream vendor in 1928 in San Francisco when he decided to use two oatmeal cookies instead of wafers. But wait, it gets even better, he even dipped it into chocolate before serving it! If you have never tried this type of ice cream sandwich before, why not give it a good in honor of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day? After all, everything tastes better when it has been covered in chocolate, right?
History of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Nobody quite knows where the day originated from, or even the definitive place the ice cream sandwich itself started. There are pictures from 1900 of people eating them after paying nothing more than a penny! These delights come in many forms, but originally it was some vanilla ice cream pressed between two thin graham crackers. The current form of the ice cream sandwich is a soft chocolate wafer bracketing some vanilla ice cream. But no matter the origins, the ice cream sandwich has been a staple of summertime enjoyment for many a year. Sticky fingers and a mouth surrounded by white cream is the hallmark of many a child ‘s enjoyment, wanting another in the soft heat of summer. The mere memory of these treats seem to bring memories of summers past to mind, and the utter amazement every time we bit into one of these sandwiches of ice cream.
How to celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Well, the obvious thing would be to go get an ice cream sandwich, and enjoy it sitting down like the child we all used to be. Maybe run around a little bit, laugh loudly and ask for a second one! Maybe instead of the soft chocolate wafer, you try it as they originally made it, or maybe sandwich that luscious vanilla ice cream between two cookies. Maybe add some chocolate chips around the edge, or even try chocolate ice cream between vanilla wafers. Experiment with different things, as you never know what combination that forms your ice cream sandwich will become your new favorite.
Or maybe you could introduce someone else to an ice cream sandwich. Sharing the delightfully sweet treat with someone who has never had one might just bring a smile to your face, seeing the wonder and awe on theirs. Or even showing them what an original ice cream sandwich is. Maybe the confectionery delights that are all over, like the aforementioned chocolate chip cookies sandwiching the vanilla. In any case, enjoy the soft sweetness, and avoid that all to common mistake of eating it all so fast you end up with a brain freeze!
The good thing about making an ice cream sandwich is that it can be as straightforward or as difficult as you want it to be. If you are looking for something simple, all you need to do is purchase your favorite flavor of ice cream and your favorite biscuits. All you need to do is scoop out some ice cream and place it in between the two biscuits, and then you can enjoy. Easy and super tasty, right? However, if you are someone who likes a challenge and you want to have some fun in the kitchen, you can try making your own biscuits and your own ice cream! If you go down this route, don’t forget to post some photos on your social media so that you can show everyone your impressive creations.

National Water Balloon Day AND National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
It’s summer and these holidays fall on the same day. Why wouldn’t I bring attention to that? Enjoy your ice cream sandwiches and peg someone in the chest with a water balloon then run away from their counterattack. Surprisingly, all of the other water balloon memes I found were either gross or plain mean. So, videos will have to do.

how... how did you find 190 different icecream flavors? Like you go for the signature name they are given(like one brand call vanilla vanilla but another one calls it cream paradise)? they're manufactured, home made? from those gourmet shops? those you find in supermarkets? You travel for them? or is all that around where you live and places you have passed by? you only consider milk based or also water based(tho those usually have another name)? does popsicles and things like icecream sandwich counts as flavors? have you ever gone on a trip specifically to try a region's typical ice cream? i'm sorry i am just honestly curious how you do your icecream flavors curatorship. and what is your top five out of 190 flavors.
I find ice-creams the following ways:
Cafes (we have many cafes selling their own gelato with unusual flavors, like cinnamonroll and avocado)
Traveling (Japan is a very good place for ice-creams! Although last time there I didn't find anything new.)
Finland consumes the most ice-cream per capita in the Europe. Because we're an ice-cream nation, every summer we get limited edition ice-cream flavors for all stores and kiosks. For example, this summer's new limited edition flavors are marshmallow-Biscotti cookie, and caramel-macadamia.
Manufacturers are supposed to come up with new ice-creams and also import new flavors and brands.
International stores quite often have ice-creams and sometimes I discover new flavors from their selection.
I know how to make ice-cream but only 1 flavor from the list is self-made.
To other questions!
If it made out of milk or a milk substitute, it's an ice-cream. Popsicle, sherbet etc. are not counted as ice-creams but ice-cream sandwiches are.
We have no regional specialties that much, although I know in Porvoo city there's an ice-cream factory with really wonderful flavors. Some of their flavors are available in stores but to get to taste them all I should travel to Porvoo. Without a car it's a day's worth of trip and I'm too sick to travel just to get certain ice-creams.
Having said that, I've had some regional ice-creams in Berlin, Germany!
Someday when I'm rich and healthy, I can travel somewhere just to go to try out their ice-creams.
TOP 5 (really hard to choose, so many that I like!)
Matcha
Royal Milk Tea
Spruce
German Spekulatius Christmas Cookie
Milk
But honestly speaking? If I didn't live in the country which eats ice-cream like maniacs, I wouldn't be able to get new flavors on my list that easy. Just in the past week I gained 4 new flavors (Rom-Brittle; Quark-strawberry; Marshmallow - Biscotti cookie; Vanilla-honey)
Just in these 7 months I've found 20 new flavors, all in Finland.
My ice-cream list, which updates as I find new flavors, is here.

anniversary trip to the mountains
Friday we left work a little early to drive down near Shenandoah National Park. We stopped in Sperryville to go by a brewery we used to like to go to after hikes in the area. They were in a totally different building, and when I asked when they moved they said October 2020! Which shows how long it's been since our hiking days! Yikes - we used to casually do hikes that required hours-long drives to the trailhead just on a regular weekend, but now we've fallen out of the habit. We'd both like to do it more, and were excited to hike this weekend.
After beers we got pizza (at a restaurant we've been to before that had also changed significantly since 5 years ago) and then checked into the house we were renting near Luray.
Saturday we did the Strickler Knob hike. In the photos of the sky (view from the house we rented) where the mountain does a lil step up to the right of the sunset - I'm pretty sure that's the peak/overlook we hiked to. The hike was pretty miserable, but in that way where being miserable with someone you love is kinda funny instead of just shitty. The bugs were awful and we didn't think about bug spray, just sunscreen. And I chose the wrong shoes instead of my hiking boots and suffered. It got rocky, and most of the rocky section was like the picture I posted, but there were a few "climb up this 6ft boulder" moments where I felt like I was at the climbing gym but with real life consequences if I messed up. The peanut butter sandwich at the top was great though.
We got cleaned up after hiking and then checked out Luray Caverns. We have driven past the highway signs for it so many times over the years, so it was nice to finally see it. Was it worth the $34 apiece to get in? Eh, maybe. I'm glad we saw it. It was bigger than I expected - like a longer walk to get through the whole thing. And there's an organ inside that vibrates the stalactites to make music, and it played "A Mighty Fortress is our God" and I cried despite not being religious. I grew up in a church with really old/traditional hymns and a very solemn service, and that music still makes me so emotional even though whenever I read the Bible I am like "boy this is FUCKED up."
From the caverns we got dinner at a little diner spot, then ice cream and cocktails before heading back to the house. The distillery had a dog who enjoyed greeting all of the patrons. I enjoyed being greeted by a dog. But it wasn't climate controlled inside so the 90+ deg outdoors was more comfortable than inside.
Lastly, we stopped by Patty O's cafe on the way home. There's an inn with a very fancy Michelin starred restaurant in Washington, VA, and the chef there opened up this more casual cafe across the street. It's super cute and I really wanted to try it, but the vibe was better than the food. There was a live bluegrass band playing, and although I was bummed at first because it made it hard to hear each other talk, it was a nice atmosphere. The food was good but not mind-blowing. We also got some treats from the bakery to take home, and they were similarly good but not amazing. Except the chocolate mousse. That was mind-blowing, as much as a simple chocolate mousse could be.
Overall it was a really nice weekend getaway a few hours from home!

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
The cold twin bursts of chocolate with the soft hint of vanilla between, leading to a small explosion of flavor. A delight over a century old, and even more impressive is that it is still as liked today as it was back then. The very taste of delight for untold of summers, this is the celebration of Ice Cream Sandwich Day!
Learn about Ice Cream Sandwich Day
If you have never had an ice cream sandwich before, you are seriously missing out!
If you have never tried this type of ice cream sandwich before, why not give it a good in honor of Ice Cream Sandwich Day? After all, everything tastes better when it has been covered in chocolate, right?
History of Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Nobody quite knows where the day originated from, or even the definitive place the ice cream sandwich itself started.
How to celebrate Ice Cream Sandwich Day
Well, the obvious thing would be to go get an ice cream sandwich, and enjoy it sitting down like the child we all used to be.

Had to get a letter from the central post office, since it contained my information about my Japanese national health insurance and the payment and everything, so I could only get it with a signature, so I had to go there in person. It's kinda far away from the Dormitory, about half an hour... So I decided to just plan a whole day for going out.
I realised the bubble tea shop that I wanted to go to is in a very nearby shopping mall, so I went there and got bubble tea first. I couldn't resist and got the special sweet potato bubble tea at DouDou - it's extremely amazing and delicious! With actual sweet potato inside, so it tastes very natural.
Then I was just walking around and looking around, also got myself a workout mat finally! And after I walked around enough, I decided to go to Saizeriya, an "Italian" restaurant, as I've seen it on YouTube before and had planned to go there at some point.
Got a pasta gratin with shrimps and creamy sauce, for 430 ¥ and it tasted exactly like 430 ¥. And I also treated myself by getting these cinnamon buns with ice cream, they were actually really delicious! And all the food is so cheap, it's amazing.
Since I planned to spend the day out today, I also wanted to go to the Iias shopping mall. From my dorm it's half an hour, and the previous shopping mall is half an hour, but between the shopping malls it's again half an hour... So it's kinda like a triangle, I guess. As it gets dark here already at 5pm, I could see my city and its lights in the dark... 💫
Back home I ate the treats I had collected step by step, while watching LoL Worlds. One strawberry sandwich, with both normal and pistachio whipped cream and I think nuts in the dough? Was very delicious, fruity, creamy, soft, not too sweet (finally an example where I believe those people saying Japanese sweets are not as sweet), 4/5. Then I went to Mister Donuts again, but most was already sold out since it was so late, so I only got another halloween special and the most basic donut. The basic one was actually pretty good. Soft and fluffy on the inside, firm and almost crispy on the outside, nice simple dough flavour, 4/5. The Halloween one was a bit disappointing though; was basically a standard donut where they just put chocolate on top. But somehow the chocolate didn't add value and taste, like it usually does, but just made it more boring in taste. Probably also because it was a bit sweet. 3/5. And lastly, I got a chocolate fondant cake, from Beard Papa's. Originally I went there to try new cream puff flavours (especially the sweet potato one), but because I got to the shop so late, it was already sold out. Sad. But the chocolate cake was still amazing, though it didn't have the lava effect, as I couldn't eat it up. But yeah, 4/5 (bit sweet).
Very much enjoyed all this delicious food all day.

SHEFAYIM KIBBUTZ, Israel − They exchanged text messages and emojis. Brief status updates with words of encouragement. A picture of the beloved family dog "Tutsi."
Until no more messages came.
And then, Cindy Flash, an American, and her Israeli husband, Igal, vanished into the violence, presumed kidnapped by Hamas.
Four days after Hamas attacked Israel, more than 100 Israelis and potentially dozens of foreign nationals are thought to be held captive in the Gaza Strip. At least 14 U.S. citizens have been killed and an unknown number are still unaccounted for.
Flash, 67, originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, is one of them. She lives in Kfar Aza, a kibbutz in southern Israel near Gaza, where some of the most harrowing and grisly stories have been emerging during the last few days.
"They are breaking down the safe room door," Flash said in one of her final messages to her daughter Keren, 34. "We need someone to come by the house right now." She had been communicating with her parents from a few houses away.
Keren described her mother, who worked as an administrator in a local college, as someone who had the "sweetest biggest heart," who everyone knew and loved, and who had spent a lifetime advocating for the rights of Palestinians, including those who live in Gaza where she may now be held.
She emigrated to Israel decades ago after a visit during college, when she fell in love with Israel's system of kibbutzim − collectives traditionally centered around agriculture, but which have evolved to accommodate myriad interests, tastes and even businesses.
"They didn't deserve this,'' her daughter said Tuesday on the grounds of a sprawling hotel and resort located on a coastal kibbutz northeast of Tel Aviv, where hundreds of people affected by the Hamas attack temporarily evacuated. "No one deserves this."
It was filled with volunteers bringing sandwiches and sweet cakes. Sobbing teenagers, reunited after several days of having their worst fears confirmed, hugged each other tightly. Small groups of people sat at tables hunched over laptops devising lists of the missing. A manager said that about 300 people from Kfar Aza were staying at the hotel.
Before the attack, Kfar Aza had a population of approximately 800. Nobody knows for sure how many survived.
An Israeli home next to the Gaza security fence
Cindy and Igal's home in Kfar Aza sits right next to the security fence Hamas broke through on Saturday morning as they attacked Israel by land, sea and air.
They had recently renovated it, requiring a move away from the kibbutz for a few months.
"They were so happy to be back," said Keren.
And their daughter said that despite their proximity to Gaza, everyone in the family had always felt secure and reveled in their area's lush vegetation, tranquility and sense of community.
In fact, the extended Flash family had expected a very different Saturday than the one they got. _________________
hope she's found safe
They had planned a family picnic. And later that afternoon they were going to make and fly kites in the local soccer field as part of an annual community event. Maybe, they thought, they'd eat a little ice cream. Try to relax after a hectic week of family life and work. A DJ was going to play.
Instead, Keren, a pilates instructor, and her husband Avidor Schwartzman, 37, a media consultant, woke abruptly around 6:30 a.m. to a blaring Kibbutz alarm system and heard what appeared to be the sound of bombs going off. They lept out of bed and dashed down the hall to grab their one-year-old baby, Saar − as well as her bottle, diapers, water, a little food. Then, they locked themselves in a room of concrete and reinforced steel.
Around the same time, Cynthia and Igal, 66, locked themselves in their own safe room and the sounds of bombs gradually turned into the sounds of automatic gun fire as Hamas encircled Kfar Aza and began going house to house to hunt down its residents.
"We started losing contact with so many people on various WhatsApp groups," said Keren, who along with Avidor and Saar, was eventually rescued by Israeli security services. ''We would hear that they were wounded and then they would just drop off completely."
Israel media reported Tuesday that the bodies of 40 children and babies were found in Kfar Aza, some of whom had been beheaded. An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson said Kfar Aza was a "massacre." The bodies of civilians and militants were found scattered throughout the rural kibbutz. He declined to comment on the beheadings. One report, which USA TODAY could not independently verify, said there were multiple beheadings and that charred bodies were also found. The Israeli death toll from the Hamas attacks has passed 1,200.
Not giving up hope that her family will be found
Neither the U.S. nor Israeli authorities had been able to provide them with any information about where her parents might be, Keren said.
But she had not lost hope they would be found.
"Any time someone calls us, any authority from the kibbutz or anywhere, our hearts sink down and then they say 'we don't have any new information.'"
Shaylee Atary, 34, another Kfar Aza resident, spent several days coming to terms with this feeling as well.
She last saw her husband Yahav Winner, 37, on Saturday as he barricaded a window of their home to allow time for Shaylee and their one-month old daughter Shaya to flee their home.
'A signal that I should run'
"He kept saying to me this is not the day we are going to die," Atary said.
"We could hear the attackers walking on the grass outside the window," she remembered.
"There was a crunching sound because the leaves have started to fall down because of the season. We couldn't talk because we didn't want them to hear our voices, so we were signaling silently to each other. And then, as they were breaking through the window Yahav looked at me for a quarter-second, he didn't say goodbye, but I understood that it was like a kind of signal that I should run."
She fled first to some nearby bushes, and then to an empty garden shed.
And running, for Atary, is hard because of a car accident that has made it difficult for her to walk. She was also carrying Shaya, preventing her from moving quickly.
As she hid in the shed, Atary found a hammer and screwdriver, which she put in her pockets. She put some old pots on her and Shaya's head, who was − miraculously − asleep.
But then the baby woke up and began to cry, which attracted the attention of the attackers. She could hear them walking toward her. She feared they would just shoot into the shed indiscriminately.
"I knew I had to run again," she said. "But this time, it was a decision, not so much an instinct. So again I fled and when I reached a large grassy area that is in the middle of our kibbutz I thought 'well, maybe this is how I die despite what Yahav said.'"
'Don't be a hero'
Moments later, a family with small children sheltering in their home saw her and ushered her inside, risking their lives. She stayed in this safe room for the next 27 hours, without food or water, and as the oxygen in the sealed safe room dwindled, before they were rescued by Israel's military.
"Yahav is a very protective," she said of her husband. "He's also smart. I believe he probably surrendered to allow us to escape."
Late Tuesday the news finally came. Yahav's body had been located.
"In my head now, I tell myself that when he looked at me what he was saying was: 'Shaylee, you are with the child. I'm holding the door. Go'," she said.
"Then I think, why didn't I say: 'Don't be a hero. Come with me.'"
