😂 Actually, do you have cool Naruto fic recs for someone who's never seen the show? I keep itching to start it so I can understand some of my friends' interests better but I would just rather... read things. And I know that the fics might not be accurate to personalities or plot, but if you have anything beginner-friendly or fun that might help my brain get more excited to make the effort and watch, I'll take it. I personally like relationship drama but I'm cool with whatever you've got.

i do!!! i watched naruto as a kid but i completely forgot most things so i got into it again by fanfiction. also as a side note; i apologize but i don't read from narutos point of view very often if at all as that is just a personal preference of mine, just a warning in case thats what you were looking for-- and my favourite character is sakura which you'll probably see lmao 😅

BEGINNER FRIENDLY NARUTO RECS

"Your name sounds like the kind of thing you say when you’re afraid,” Sakura finishes.  “A prayer,” Sasuke offers without looking away from the window.  (Team 7 takes a quiet moment to talk about what their names feel like.)

notes: there isn't much of a plot with this one but its a wonderful showcase of the bond that team 7 shares/could share. it floats beside canon not really connected but it could be, and i think its just a great introduction to the way team 7 should be imo!!

Terror feeds the Soul by Pleasedial123 [ONE-SHOT]

Sakura is not an idiot. She was praised for her intelligence, reached Top Kunoichi at the Academy for her brains.  So it doesn't take her long after being placed on the powder keg that is Team Seven to realize she is going to die.  Kakashi, career shinobi since age-six, has no idea what the hell is going on with his little pink-haired student or why there is such fear in her eyes. So he gives her head-pats. That's what you do for scared puppies isn't it?

notes: some really good characterization with this one and a deeper look at the subtle hint of corruption/injustice in the shinobi world that canon already gives us.

Just Killing Time by Elizabeth Culmer (edenfalling) [G] [ONE-SHOT]

After Wave Country and before the chuunin exam, Team 7 kills time while waiting for Kakashi to show up.

notes: an adorable small fic consisting of freindship and the idea of found family, they're just cute little kids in this and it makes me smile so hard.

Sasuke Uchiha apologizes, or at least makes an attempt. Sakura thinks he could do better than THAT.

notes: its not every day i find a sasusaku fic that i genuinly enjoy, but this one both cracked me up and actually convinced me that they could work as a couple lmao, after some bad canon events, this fic shows a completely done sakura dealing with the fallout and it is gold. featuring naruto and kakashi as unwilling bystanders.

Wildflowers and Incisors by Chancy_Lurking [T] [ONE-SHOT]

There’s a boy Sakura loves the way Naruto loves Sakura, in a shameless and open, but painfully unequal way. There’s a boy Sakura loves the way Hinata loves Naruto, in a way that feels no more like a choice than breathing. Neither of those boys need pretty girls. “We are all really pretty, though,” Ino assures her with a haughty sniff, crossing her leg the other way so her calf rests on Sakura’s shin. “They’re going to be strong, maybe even the strongest ever in the Hidden Leaf,” Sakura says and Hinata doesn’t need convincing, they both know it, so she doesn’t belabor the point. “So, we have to be stronger than them.” (The girls of Konoha band together as friends. Girlhood is easier in a group.)

notes: a wonderful look at the kunoichis in naruto, with friendship for once more important than love. gives them the character development and attention they deserve, but didn't quite fully get in canon.

Ino decides to help Sai learn to function in society. Sai does his best to keep up.

notes: now we're taking the focus off the main characters of naruto to focus on some great side characters-- ino and sai are both charecterized awesomely in this fic. they're awkward and don't really know how to function in society (being a ninja will do that to you) but they clearly grow to care and love for eachother dearly.

Pushy and Loud and Brave and Proud by bluecatcups [M] [ONE-SHOT]

When Temari meets Shikamaru, she is twelve years old and she is everything she has ever been; pushy and loud and brave and proud. This is the story of who Temari becomes.

notes: thanks to this fic i fell in love with temari as a character. it is a character study at its heart and therefore it has SUPERB characterization, with believable romance and a theme of self-love. i adore this fic.

NOT SO CANON COMPLIANT FUN

It had been two weeks since the trial. Two weeks since Sasuke had been given the choice of surrendering his eyes and being allowed to leave, or being stuck for five years without ever being allowed to leave the village. He had chosen the later. And Sakura isn't avoiding him on purpose, but it's still happening and she's kind of okay with it.

notes: a not so romantic retelling of sasuke coming back to konoha. i really enjoy the way sakura is characterized in this and the way all her friendships are potrayed (especially her and sai they are besties). instead of running into sasukes open arms, she decides she doesn't mind keeping to herself.

Rules Were Made to Be Broken by MotivationIsDead [T] [COMPLETED]

Kakashi wasn’t entirely sure he wasn’t hallucinating. Or suffering from heart failure. “I thought you were dead,” he said blankly. He might’ve been going into shock. Obito winced and rubbed the back of his head with a sheepish grin. “Yeah,” he said, tone stilted. “There’s actually quite the story behind that.” “I should hope so,” was Kakashi’s bland response.

notes: kakashi and obito if obito decided to not go through with his villainous plan. it is a ship, but the way the bond is potrayed just hits so good. something more than friendship and simple love and instead a deep trust, with banger characterization and development. a couple steps away from crack, i laughed so goddamn hard.

this entire fic can be summarized by;

kakashi and obito: fuck it we ball.

Smiles in Spring by Kalira [T] [ONE-SHOT]

One spring day when they are very small, Ino meets a little girl with shy eyes, a beautiful smile, and pink hair, and immediately knows what she wants in her future. Ino's never had any qualms bending the force of her will on the universe to be sure she gets whatever she wants.

notes: ino and sakura are made for eachother in this fic and the progression of their relationship is adorable. some bonus friendship with shikamarau and choji.

Genuinely Delighted by Chancy_Lurking [T] [COMPLETED]

"Lee, in spite of how brash he might’ve seemed, still appeared to be incredibly considerate and Shino would feel wrong to just brush him off. His enthusiasm about asking Shino out was completely genuine, and that was enough to make Shino feel flattered. And anyway, Lee would probably prove to be much more pleasant company than some of the other guys Shino knew."

notes: just a fluffy post-canon fic about some more wonderful side characters, with romance and friendship. lee and shino are so unexpected but work so well in this fic.

notes: god i could gush about this fic for so long. everything about it delights me, the characterizations, character development, relationships and just the careful way the plot was constructed. it comes together to form a very inrtiguing and engaging fic.

Tenten turned beautiful when she was nineteen.

A little yellow-haired boy saves Sakura from the bullies. And everything changes.

notes: one of my all time favourite fics it is full of character and life, and the friendship between sakura and naruto is so pure yet all-consuming. they are eachothers persons, eachothers sun, and the world that is being crafted is so engaging. featuring kakashi with teenage angst.

HONOURARY MENTION

Retrograde Motion by Crunchysunrises [T] [ABANDONED]

From sixteen to eleven didn't feel like a big jump until she realized that she was now the best ninja in their class. And that tiny Sasuke hates her for it.

notes: the reason this is an honourary mention is because this is the fic that got me into naruto! the first one i read, and the first one that captivated me to read all 100k words (yikes..). so despite the fact that its abandoned im still gonna share it with you in case it interests you ;)

Airing or Recently Finished

Of the things currently airing, I would recommend the following.

My Personal Weatherman (Gaga, Viki)

This show has been a fascinating examination of a new-ish relationship with some heavy kink overtones. This show is not so much about the chase, and so much more about how these two could actually function long-term. I've enjoyed reading @lutawolf kink talk about this one, and the leads have some of the best sexual chemistry we've seen from Japan.

If It's With You (Gaga)

We have a sexually active and assured gay protagonist who knows who he is and what he wants. He's also a menace with some sort of trauma. I am absolutely obsessed with him. This show is going to be very short at 5 episodes, so it may be one you don't want to miss out on. Truly, this has felt like nothing else we've had in a long time and I've been thinking about it for days.

Love in Translation (iQIYI)

This just finished and is an absolute delight. This is one of the better executions of a workplace romance we've seen this year, and was the show anchoring me with all the heavy shows and silly shows airing at once. This show had so much heart to it. It had some wobbles towards the end, but the kindness underpinning this show makes it one of my favorites of the year.

Because you're still doing the homework, here are some shows I know you missed.

Make It Right (Grey)

You should still finish this. I still believe this is one of the most important foundational works for what made Thai BL start to feel more queer. This show asked big questions about male sexual maturation and I don't think any of the Thai high school shows have gone there since.

We Best Love (WeTV)

You probably haven't watched much from Taiwan, but this is one of the best examples of why we remain committed to them. Sam Lin and Yu have hands down the top three best paired chemistry in BL.

Rainbow Prince (YouTube)

This camp masterpiece from last year is one of my favorite shows. It is a hot mess, but the songs are fun and the plot is ridiculous.

Here’s a brief introduction to my fanfics!

Dinners (Sasuhina | Complete) is my first baby, the kind of story you'd want to read with a cup of hot chocolate on a cold, rainy day. It's all about fluff, with an easygoing plot that stays focused on the main couple—such a light read to brighten your mood 🥰❤️.

Survivors (Sasuhina | Complete) is my second Sasuhina fanfic, and in this one, I’ve brought Itachi back into the mix. It’s a very slow-burn story that tries not to ignore the impact of the people around the main characters (I’m doing my best, I promise! 😆).

It’s more mature than Dinners, carrying heavier emotions and a bit (a lot) of angst.

Phoenix Hearts (Shikahina | Complete) is my first Shikahina fic, where I'm trying to explore themes of miscommunication and the lack of open discussions between spouses, and so far, this one is the closest to my heart.

Unscripted emotions (Sasuhina | On going) is my first Modern Au, between Cameras and tabloids, Sasuke, a raising actor, and Hinata, his new PR specialist, find a way to each other. here I'm trying to tell a story of the struggles of dating a public figure and the challenges that come with it.

Between Our Lines (Kakahina | On going) This, is my take on age gap relationships, and what past might hide to each of them, there's a lot of angst and baggage here, but it will have, of course, a happy ending.

One of the things that April is an awareness month for is community college. So, have some fanfic with student//teacher characters or a school setting.

Mahogany (AO3) - "Shepard and squaddies are students at the elite Galactic Training Academy. (Think Starfleet meets Hogwarts. In space.) Reapers have been dead for hundreds of years, but there are still plenty of baddies out in the galaxy. Shepard-in-training rises to the occasion, with the aid of her squad and a certain snarky flight student. Currently Rated M for language and mature situations."

The Night Will Come but Not to Stay (AO3) - "Jazz is excited about going to Gotham University for college. It's halfway across the country from Amity Park and anyone who knows about her weird family or ghost nonsense. Finally, she can pretend to be a normal woman who just wants to go into psychiatry. She meets a cute guy named Jason, and they seem to be getting along great."

Form 23-C: Application for a New Roommate (AO3) - "After battling ninjas, aliens, madmen, mafiosos, other heroes and death itself, Jason was about to face his most unknown foe yet: a normal life. It's fine. He'd always dreamed of going to college and for once reality sort of lived up to expectations. He loves the classes, he can handle the workload and his cases too. His roommate is a total douche, but whatever. Jason's fine, he's got this. Then he meets his roommate's brother. Jason totally doesn't have this."

Holy Romantic Overtures, Batman! (AO3) - "After the heist of a lifetime, henchman!Jason decides to go legit and enrolls in college. The last person he expected to see there was Robin, and he certainly didn’t expect to fall for him either. But somehow it all works out. Maybe it’s all the labels?"

campus cryptid vs. future valedictorian (AO3) - "Mara Glass did not care about "weird hot guy," the supposed "campus cryptid." She had heard of him her first couple years and had him pointed out to her by a classmate once, but what was there to notice? Okay, he was probably thirty, a nontraditional student, so what? There were a number of those around. Apparently he was hot--well congrats to people who were into people, they could keep him. And if you asked Mara, from her extremely objective perspective, those Disney-green eyes were doing a lot of heavy lifting. There was nothing particularly noteworthy about a thirty-something guy who didn't talk about himself to twenty-year-old classmates. He probably had, like, a real life. There were rumors he was married, although Brittany noted that the only reason people thought that was because one time someone heard him finish a phone call with, "You light the candles, I'll bring dinner. I love you." None of that was remotely interesting to Mara. He sounded like a normal person, and she wished people would shut up about him. Then in third year, she had a history class with weird hot guy."

Bonus: Scholastic Nightmare (AO3) - "Nara Sayuri, a religious studies major from a traditional household, would be hard pressed to come up with a worse nightmare. It was her first time presenting a paper at a conference and apparently her paper was so wrong that one of her ancestors - a deified ancestor, the Shikabane-hime herself - came down from the heavens specifically to point out how off base Sayuri was."

Recent

I've recently read heroes come back by DairyFarmer on ao3 and it's amazing, spectacular, exquisite, devious, gorgeous ect ect. (warning that a large portion of their other fics have explicit content such as psudo sibling incest and underage (not hero's come back)). Uchiha Sasuke as Tim Drake (it's not a very long fic but the "identity crisis" bookmark has 59 pages of similar stuff...)

This has given me an itch, my own writing ability is sporadic at best but some more ideas:

Itachi as Tim, he doesn't have a brother so he's broody mc broody pants and when he see's Mr. Dark Knight himself he adopts Bruce on sight (so sasuke, so anger, it's adorable). I personally think it'd be funnier to have it be like 10 year old Tim ( or age before Jason dies) adopting 40 year old Bruce Wayne. Itachi will let this be known to. He will shower my boy in love and praise (head pats when he finishes a case and everyone is deeply disturbed, who let this obsessive child off its leash?). THEN when Jason falls he either makes Bruce the most horrible version of himself (ie k!ll ppl and stuff cause thats normal) like indoctrinate the fuck out of this grown ass man (ROOT conditioning anyone?) or he'll just stare at Bruce disappointedly until he folds (like the wet paper towel he is). Blah Blah... Itachi thinks Red Hood is Edo Tensei-ed and the "beat that little Robin replacement to the ground" turns into "why is this eleven year old beating my ass and preaching about free will". And just meeting Damian.

Itachi cannot take this, big brood and baby brood is to much he's going to melt into a puddle of goop. A major plotline could be Itachi just casually mentioning that he'll probably die at like twenty because diseases cross over too ig or BLIND TIM org. It's karma (overusing mangekyo in past life) but everyone's like HOW DO YOU MOVE cause ninja. So it could be Bruce parenting Itachi back because oh no I've grown attached to the little stalker and trying to be super duper nice and accomadating towards Itachi's blindness when it just... doesn't affect him at all?

Steph (probably): So what do your eyes look like behind the mask?

Tim (deadpan): The same

Tim (looking directly into Stephs eyes): I'm blind

That was my most comprehensive one but I raise you:

Timto joining Joker (either pretending the Joker Jr. thing worked OR the electro shocks just made him Tobi). Either way it's either best friends or on sight for those two.

Shim knows that Bruce is Batman ect ect and Alfred finds out Shim knows (or someone related to the batfamily... maybe one of the sirens? Could totally picture Selina bugging him until he fixes that man). And Shikamaru is the laziest man Robin ever that the exasperation Bruce feels stops the greif momentarily (and he has Shim's hero name be "Sloth" as a joke and it just sticks). Shim would like to speak to the manager about how he can't cloud watch because the whole fucking sky is a cloud. Steph is giving nostalgia for another loud blond he used to know (esp the bright colors). Jason is fine with Shim because dude obvi don't wanna be here, Dick treats Shim like he's a cat, Cass and him are besties (they just stare at e/o, don't ask), and Damian will cleanse this manor of your lazy filth myself.

Plot points:

B/c Shikamaru having adhd is one of my personal faves, I want the typical "Tim stop pulling all nighters and drinking coffee" but the coffee actually helps slow down his brain so the batfam take it away and get a revenge driven, irrated Shim.

Ra's gives back Tim because he thought he was slick with the spoiling him so he'll join my side but Shika is just a sugar bby at this point. (he hasn't moved in 3 days yall can have him).

When "Tt." meets "Troublesome."

Fighting villains is a drag so Shim just blackmails criminal's into backing off. Like yes Kenny, I know you're life story and if you just stop being so troublesome we'll sort this out.

Can we have blacksmith Tim? I want him making the most outrageous weapons ever and it's like Kiyoshi warrior's from avatar fans or smt.

He is allergic to cats (don't know if it's canon, kinda just popped into my head). This is comedic and everyone teases him for sneezing near Alfred the Cat considering how much of a cat he is
