I think the most beautiful thing about writing of Howl and Sophie's pair is that they are written as people before being written as a pair. Let me explain this very quick.

The thing about book Sophie and Howl is that they are not really fully fitting into any "classic" romantic trope. They are not exactly enemies to lovers, as their angry chats are definitely cannot be considered a life or death battle, they are not rivals to lovers because the only aspect of rivalry between them is the cleaningness of Howl's room. They are not friends to lovers, as their relationship just doesn't fit into "friendship" structure at the very start, nor they are roomates (yes, they live in the same house but that's not the core aspect of their relationships). Of course, you can go on and fit the name of the trope you found specifically for them, but that's the thing.

They simply cannot be processed through a pairings lenses only, in order to understand how they act in relationship you need to analyse them separately, as a characters first of all. Cause that's what the book itself does!

Sure, it doesn't have a whole lot of romance instead, but it gives us time to learn and observe the life of incredibly written, alive characters, understand them as personalities first of all, while slowly immersing the dynamic between two characters (in this case, Howl and Sophie) into work. They are written as personalities, both being fully separated and interviewing, changing eachother's point of view.

It's difficult to find a trope for them. They're are not a trope. They are Howl and Sophie, and that's probably the only way their dynamic can be properly described. Just as real people, they are not really fitting into the boxes of linial character progression, but go way deeper into being complex, filled with little differences and moments only people with their personality can have in romantic (or any different) kind of interaction. They're imperfect, and silly, and multidimensional and the reader knows them well enough to imagine them interacting way beyond of what the book says to them.

They are being people before being a ship, a pair of a trope — and that's why they work so perfectly charming in the end.

Howl and Sophie are unique in being themselves.

vs. Egghead arc and meeting kaku again post time skip - with nothing really changing of how luffy perceives some people (ch. 1078)

and also kaku meeting zoro on the sunny on Egghead prior the scene above and their lines echoing the first meeting on Water 7 - "I'm sorry. Did I wake you?" vs here "Who dares to disturb my nap?"

episode 11 of hilda hurricane is truly so well-done, it's crazy. the way the central theme of this episode seems to be contradiction...both internal and external, with characters like roberto struggling with living out a truly communist lifestyle if it means cutting ties with aramel. on one hand, zico is right. any form of activism requires conviction, and that might mean cutting out parts of your life that don't serve your cause. but on the other hand, most people don't live in echo chambers. we might frequently meet or even love people who don't believe in the things we do, who don't live the way we live. the world is full of incredibly complex people, and to live in that world means struggling with our own politics and our own beliefs about that world. meanwhile, it comes out during the commotion at the city council that thin waist is actually kind of religious. and, as an audience, your first instinct is to think of how contradictory that is, since people like him should technically be less likely to be capital-B Believers. but queer people's relationship with religion, as we know, is not as straightforward. many people can and have walked back on organized religion for the role it plays in their oppression, but deep, personal faith is harder for someone to completely discard —more so for people who are raised in religious societies and have been hearing religious rhetoric all their lives. i'm not sure how much more we'll learn about thin waist as the show goes along, but it was so fascinating to see him voice out his faith in saint george in front of the communists. even when they're a part of the same "side," it's clear there's a lot of variation among them.

even if you look away from the individual characters, there's this great scene where lolo and her friends get ready to listen to a radio show, and the very next scene is hilda and the girls doing the exact same thing. you would think, considering just how many differences have been established between the catholics and the camellias, they're in entirely different worlds. but maya angelou's quote about how human beings are "more alike than unalike" comes to mind, because fundamentally, all we're looking for is community and that all oppressive politics tends to do is convince you that a certain group of people aren't like you, when in actuality, you probably have at least one thing in common with them!

had an idea for a post-FoR nightfall/621 oneshot idea, but i'm laughing bc the premise is like, so after 621 does Fires of Ibi 2: the electric bugaloo, he escapes to wander aimlessly on some random planet, completely lost bc he has no idea how to function outside of a handler+hound framework, and doesn't even have ayre anymore. nightfall comes to investigate what's happened to the raven that succeeded him, and is like oh, i gotta bully you back into shape, but they only know how to use tough love...

One reason Karai ("bad girl") turned out better than April ("good girl") in TMNT 2012 CGI version was

• "Bad girl" Karai had spunk and stood up for herself and was opinionated and initiative. Had more depth and motivation.

Edit: The thing that made her "bad girl" (and that happens in real life) was that she was defiant and went for anything she desired without asking permission or authority. Definitely. Patriarchy-defiant, probably. And devs of 2012 TMNT really noticed this in 2003 TMNT Karai. And besides the patriarchal demand of female behavior and repression, the devs really liked and invested into her more. She was a person, as a result.

• While the "good girl" TMNT 2012 April turned out as a distorted image of a patriarchal idea for what a "good girl" is supposed to be like. A luckluster puppet of the system's ideology for what it is supposed to be or even look like. (Brother Grim pleased the patriarchal system and made their females into harmless, housewife, helpless personnel who were singing happily while getting exploited with housework. Those men didn't care for those portrayal of the 'proper good characters' rather than forcing gendered behaviors into their sexist fairy tales. For example. Female characters and stories suffered as we never really knew about them. They were cutboard cutout.)

i'll be honest op, my main issue with calling aventurine kakavasha is that hoyo heavily used romani culture and history when creating his character and literally made up a name out of romani's festival (kakava) yet refused to give him any melanin romani people have...i would rather not abide by such a crude use of actual existing culture of a strongly discriminated group. so uh. that's why hcing him leaving that name behind is picked by people, in my personal moment bc i don't like how hoyo treats cultures. no offence or aggression to you, of course /gen

like, idk, you are aware that aventurine is rroma, right? he's not white, and simply dropping these parts of his character and treating him like he is isn't... this isn't doing anything. listen, hoyo's bullshit is never-ending so of course he's white-passing, and i'm just as frustrated as everyone else because dark-skinned rroma never get their representation; they're always depicted as pale, and while that's how some rroma people look, it doesn't fairly encompass them as a whole. but the response can't be to just chuck the representation out the window entirely and perpetuate the cycle of whitewashing him..??
