So in Post JTTW, I get the distinct feeling Macaque, essentially, took over Shítougùshì's original role as the village storyteller. It would have been his role to tell the stories of the past and keep FFM's history alive alongside helping Wukong to rule as his husband. Making him both the 'Monkey Queen' and the Village Historian/Storyteller. He has an office full of plays, props, and scripts that are meant to tell the tale of FFM, and Wukong hadn't gone in there since this disappearance

After settling down with Wukong after the Journey - Macaque realises that FFM has been left without a decent storyteller for the last 500+ something years.

And a certain monkey demon just spent a lot of that time learning theatre from Jiuweihuli/Nine-Tailed Vixen >:)

Macaque doesn't even mind the occasional title of "Monkey Queen" or "Consort" - he's still "The King's Warrior" at the end of the day. And the island's theatre director at night.

The Shadow Lantern aint even a weapon in the Post Jttw Au; Mac uses it almost exclusively as a visual aid for the stories. Keeps the kids and visual learners more engaged.

I imagine "Shadow Play" in the au becomes more MK sneaking around the theatre in town (owned by Nainai Vixen) in case it holds at least some clue to where Macaque went. MK finds the Shadow Lantern (something he knows his baba wouldn't leave behind willy-nilly) and it projects a saved play regarding a "White Bone Demon".

MK gets really nervous about his dad was looking into before he went missing...

people hate this show because the main character is a nasty little pill but i hate to tell you that that is literally what happens when you lose a loved one unexpectedly and traumatically. sorry.

Movies

Eternal Sunshine

captures the surreal nature of forgetting someone you love(d) and knowing exactly what's happening despite being powerless to stop it.

Menashe

truly beautiful and moving film about the utter listlessness of life after loss. if you have ever felt unmoored, this movie is for you. one of the most beautiful soundtracks ever, too.

The Farewell

people were weird about this movie but the final scene where billie is being driven away from her nainai's house is one of the realest things i can remember seeing in a recent movie.

Life is Strange

people found the dialogue in this stilted but this scene (spoilers) is so true to life especially for the early 2010s.

for unknown reasons this panel of calvin mourning a raccoon that he found is the ultimate expression of grief - the horror and resignation and dissonance are captured so well in his sunken eyes. i think about this all the time.

You lifted the dutch oven out of your actual oven, lifting the lid with a potholder and inhaling the delicious scent of the beef burgundy which had slow cooked all day long. You still felt the occasional sting of the post-holiday blues, but it hadn't been as bad as it had before, knowing that soon you would have more time-off coming to you.

You peered into the living room to see Ellen playing happily on the floor with Six-Thirty, giggling up a storm as he sniffed her. You couldn't believe how big Ellen was getting, already a sweet looking little cherub with the pinkest cheeks you had ever seen and the cutest giggle that never failed to make you smile. Already she was sitting up on her own, able to hug both Six-Thirty's and Cal's faces with her chubby little arms. As for Six-Thirty, he had proved to be the best older sibling she ever had.

You heard a car pulling up into the driveway, your face lighting up, knowing it was your husband. Sure enough, he came through the front door, his own face lighting up seeing the baby and the dog both playing together in the living room.

"Well, good evening, princess," he cooed, scooping her up into his arms. "Is Momma still home?"

You laughed, leaning against the frame of the kitchen doorway. "What? You thought I'd leave her here alone?"

Calvin made his way to you and pressed a kiss to your lips. "Anything crazy happen while I was out?"

"Well, Mei's grandma came hobbling over for a little bit," you answered. "I made her a pot of black tea and we split those cookies that Rose and Sandy made last week."

"She shouldn't be walking in the snow," Calvin said when he heard.

"Cal, she's eighty-six years old," you chuckled. "Do you really think she's gonna listen to anybody else?"

"No but, the last thing you, me or anybody else wants is for her to fall on the ice," Calvin answered.

That had been true. You always felt bad when Nainai insisted she walk everywhere despite the damage that had been done to her feet. Even though they hadn't been in that state for long and had healed to a normal state, it had been bad enough where she had walked with a hobble and needed the use of a cane. Numerous times, you and Cal had offered her a ride home, even though the Shangs lived around the block, but Nainai had insisted she walk home herself to try and keep her feet working.

"Oh something smells delicious," he groaned, tickling the baby a little to make her laugh.

"It's your mother's beef burgundy recipe," you informed him.

Calvin's eyes went wide. "Mashed potatoes?"

You lifted off the lid of the other pot, revealing the mounds of mashed potatoes within. Calvin was in absolute heaven when he smelled them, all mixed together with garlic and chives.

As soon as you had Ellen in her little high-chair, dinner was served. It was one of those nights where it had been much needed, the weather outside becoming frightfully cold and the snow blowing up and down the block to batter the doors and windows of every house nearby. You and Cal exchanged stories about the goings on of the day while Ellen had gotten a little messy to say the least. Six-Thirty however, had gotten it into his head, to lick her face clean before you could run a wet washcloth over it.

"Ok, ok, you.....down," Calvin said to Six-Thirty, snapping his fingers.

Six-Thirty obeyed and moved to his spot back under the table before you snuck him a little piece of beef for his troubles. "Whatcha think sweetheart?" he asked. "That time of the night?"

"I definitely think little princess could use a bath, that's for sure," you chuckled.

Calvin lifted Ellen from her high-chair and brought her right upstairs while you loaded the dishes into the sink to be scrubbed and cleaned later, the dutch oven being filled with soap and water to soak. You slipped your remaining pocket change from the day into the jar next to the toaster, the front of it labeled "fund for dishwasher". You had dreamed of that day ever since you and Calvin had gotten married and how amazing it would be to finally have not only a dishwasher, but a washer and dryer for the basement. You, Calvin and Ellen went through so many clothes in a week that it was exhausting and despite the help from your husband and mother-in-law, the piles of laundry in the basement never really seemed to let up.

As soon as the dishes were done, dried and put away, you hurried upstairs, just in time to be met with your husband carrying Ellen in her little yellow bath towel.

"Thank you Cal," you whispered, kissing his cheek.

"No worries sweetpea," he replied, kissing you back.

DEFINITELY. her xiaoge pov is so quiet and subtle yet tensile and strong, like spun silk. and wu xie is just—i don’t have words, really. always the brightest thing in any room, to xiaoge. i feel a very normal way about them. and the sword-giving scene, and huo nainai separating them—this fic so deftly fills in all of the interstices of xiaoge slowly coming back to himself after the jade cavern, remembering and reconnecting, and starting over again where he can’t mend. yes. so good. you will be glad you read them.

TT... if you find that you want more after the ending, don't worry!! there is an am:vl spinoff sm!au where they have frequent reappearances, even through the children's banter lol ヾ(≧▽≦*)o blood of the covenant by @.ryungswr. myungyun, chaptered, finished. religious themes, vampire!myungdae, and 1900s vibes, all wrapped into one?? nainai never really thought that it would work with myungyun, but considering bite me era, i dont think i should be surprised.. the way yongsun was handled here made me gasp!! his character was very iconic (as much as i hate to say it LOL) and impacted the story.. poetically written, give it five stars o(￣▽￣)ｄ... if you finish reading it but want more, there's a crack au and a no-schedule 'sequel'! sunflower and angel's trumpet by @.0425zz. lunette, florist!linette x mafia!dailu, chaptered, ongoing. i was a casual dreamie listener, but this made me look into the group even further.. if you like old money aesthetics, double life, and very dynamic character dynamics, please read this story.. the characterization is so fun and refreshing, and there are direct references to sweeties' inside jokes lol. there's even ANGST!! AND I THOUGHT SWEETIES WERE ALLERGIC TO ANGST!!!! /HVYJ....... and it's so well done...... it will make you cry. TT....... chapter 57 'poppy' is nainai's biggest opp. (╯▔皿▔)╯!!! grrrr i will get you, zizi.. bite the bullet by @.88czns and @.mawuwamaz. ot6 rdwy (myeongyoko, magnetz, flowerz) ft. dreamie, mafia au, multi-fic series, ongoing. btb is not one fic, but multiple inside one named bundle! it is basically many stories set in the same universe with the same characters lol. my personal favorite is the flowerz one, because while the dynamic is similar to sunflower and marigold.. there is something more shocking when you get to the middle point hehe. btb has too many good things to talk about, so nainai suggests that you check it out for yourself and leave a reblog!! 🙇‍♂️ we are endless by @.endeulset. post-disbandment, ot7, chaptered, finished. nainai believes that this one is the most emotional, especially for endeuls.. two chapters cover one member (except for seongsu2 who stick together in their chapters) and detail speculations, how they feel about separating from czn and skytali, staying to work there (like sunwoo, jeonghui, and jiyoon), and even having a special chapter inspired by subin's twitter post with the bunnies at the restaurant.. it's very nostalgic and melancholic, your heart feels calm as you read ^^. as an endeul, it made me feel happy for the members, knowing that they've gone on paths that they know they'll be truly happy with.. but they'll still find ways to be together that's all!! maybe nainai will make a bigger post with all her recs, but that's for another day..

i wanted to make nainai's blog real (i even made a sideblog) but with school, ill be too busy to manage it lol.

Sulani

The Hidu-McClure Family

Sulani has always been a paradise to the world, independent of kings and rulers, letting the people govern themselves and preserve their way of life. But slowly, the community has been changing. While all of Sulani respects the Hidu-McClures, they begin talking to bringing their way of life back to what it once was, and focusing harder on natural conservation. 

It also doesn’t help that the two heirs to the Sulani Nature Conservation Society decided to abandon their posts for love. Keoni McClure was having more fun with his fellow lifeguard, Vindi Kirsen Strangreix, to even think about taking over management or even watch their children. Kai Hidu had a whirlwind romance with Princess Amina Seindu and left home to live with their sudden family. To keep the conservation society afloat and a presence on the island, Alika Hidu had no choice but to merge with another conservation effort. Meanwhile, house patriarch and merman, Paka’a Uha, is thinking about heading home into the ocean with his science baby now that his family is fractured beyond repair.

With the First Invasion of Gen 8, and a new group taking popular precedence on the island, the family has their work cut out for them. The Coast Guard has been reduced to one marine, having lost her husband and in-laws to the Mother Plant. While it’s no hard task to raise her son and brother-in-law on her own, it is hard to inspire them to stay on the island and also become coast guards.

Meanwhile, the Zunzins are slowly being worn down by the new group to merging with their movement. And as Lulia Mcclure-Zunzins hears of her father, Paka’a, leaving to go back to the mermaid kingdom, she wonders if she can even stay on Sulani with her family. Could she bring herself to leave the only home she’s ever known?

The merfolk of Sulani have a much stronger presence than ever with the new Generational Era. The current Sulani ambassador, Lorelei McClure, convinced the future king, Anenon, to see the islands for himself. However, he was swept up in the new movement, and fell deeply in love with one of it’s most loyal recruits. He came hoping to make a dear friend of the island to improve relations with human-kind, but is looking for a way to bring his alien love with him back to his kingdom to live happily ever after.

The Island Divine

From seemingly nowhere, a group of island natives began proclaiming that the island of Sulani is alive, and demands more respect from her people. They preach heavily on island conservation, wishing to rid Sulani society of anything that could harm the island itself, and foster a deep connection to nature and caring for it as one would a mother. They call themselves the Island Divine, island elders reborn in the flesh with powers that the island granted them in their resurrection. They call for others to join them, asking for their help, time, resources and listening ears to their cause.

Many are rightfully suspicious. Their apparel borders on appropriation, and they drain their followers of money, time, and positive emotions. They have even suckered in many conservation efforts, effectively making their members part of the Divine. Royalty from other countries have also been targeted, as small-time health product lines and spa franchises have also been taken over by the Divine. Many Divine members have seduced the public into adult-only parties, where procreation was heavily encouraged. According to members, only children born into the ways of the Divine can be blessed with the powers of the island. So, some members of royal families married into the group, financially supporting them and their new families for the foreseeable future.

Princess Miracle Beerloith had her health line, Honey Clover, merged with the Divine so they take their share of her profits. Princess Miriela Beerloith came to Sulani after being ignored by her family and peers, and ended up falling in love with the member of the cult and provided them with science baby services to help them gain new members; and from that, was tasked with raising the next generation of Island Divine by herself. The merfolk prince is in love with her, and Miriela is torn between staying loyal to the Divine and following her heart. Prince Hayate Kani fought side-by-side with Haych Kalawai’a in the First Invasion of Gen 8, and their survival prompted their intimate marriage and a science baby together.

Many are divided whether or not the Island Divine are a dangerous cult or fantastical new direction that Sulani must take. All remains to be seen in the future if Sulani can stay independent of a royal takeover.

Jessica waited impatiently by the door for her parents to drop Reila off. She smiled widely when she saw their car pull up and her little girl hop out and run for the front door. The minute she was in arm’s reach, Jessica scooped her into a big hug and held her close. She was so happy to have her daughter back in the house after two incredibly long, boring days.

Jessica: Welcome home, ladybug!

Reila: Mama! It’s too hard! I can’t breathe!

Reila wiggled around until Jessica loosened her grip.

Jessica: Did you have fun with nainai and papa?

Reila, excited: Yeah! We go to the zoo! I see a elephant and it was this big mama! When it walked the whole zoo moved and I almost falled!

Jessica, laughing: It sounds like you had a good time.

Reila: I had the bestest time! But when I go nigh nigh, mama wasn’t there. I sad I didn’t get to say good night to you.

Reila pouted for a minute and Jessica pulled her close, giving her a small kiss on her forehead.

Jessica: Mama missed you too.

After that, Reila was nothing but smiles as she continued to talk about all the animals she saw with her grandparents. Jessica was relieved not only that her daughter had fun, but that she also missed her mom just as much as Jessica missed her little girl.

Little Things

Naia is sarcastic and can mouth off a lot. She’s not likely to take anything lying down. BUT her sass is selective; generally, she’s fairly reserved with strangers. The more comfortable she gets-- or the more pissed off she is--, the more that sass will show.

She does NOT talk about her past openly. Least of all with strangers. Her past is something she still hasn’t fully confronted, and she is far more likely to dodge any questions about it than actually talk about it, even with good friends.

She will probably hear your character approach. People can sneak up on her, but with hearing at a distance of up to a quarter mile away, it’s pretty uncommon.

That said, she can be spacey. If she’s concentrating on something else, sometimes sounds just don’t really register, even if she’s probably heard them.

Her ears are expressive! :> They’re usually subtle movements, but noticeable to anyone paying attention.

Calling her by her full first name ( Kijonaia ) is probably the fastest way to get under her skin.

Her eyes are sage green, but shine turquoise where the light hits them. The greater the light, the more turquoise you see, but it’s usually just a hint.

You probably won’t catch her out at night. She’s afraid of the dark, and the darker it gets, the more tense she gets. In pitch black darkness, she’ll get caught in panic attacks.

She’s fast and she’s agile, but she’s also small and not very strong. She’s strong enough to support her own body-weight for prolonged periods due to her gymnastic/acrobatic skills and her kicks kind of feel like being kicked by a small horse, but that’s about it. As far as strength goes, especially against other elves, cryptids, etc., she probably won’t win in that category. Feel free to use that to your advantage. ( Also, remember that I do mean small. She’s only 5′0 and around 110lbs. Easily throwable. )

It was recently suggested to me after my post targeted towards fic-writers about titles and terms used in Chinese fantasy that I should also make one about familial terms. Apparently, it’s rather common to see confusion and mix-ups on this front as well amongst fanfiction.

What if you run into a situation where your relative has multiple siblings? Let's say for example, your father has 3 older brothers and 2 younger brothers. The eldest would be"Dabo" [Big Elder Uncle], the second and third oldests would be “Erbo” [Elder Uncle Two] and “Sanbo" [Elder Uncle Three]respectively. The younger uncles would be “Wushu” [Younger Uncle Five] and “Liushu” [Younger Uncle Six]. NOTE: Your own father is counted amongst the ranks of his brother, so he would be the fourth, and would be called “Sibo” or “Sishu” depending on which of your cousins is addressing him.

Fun with Translating Titles: The Farewell

I’m assuming other people have noticed this, but 1) I haven’t seen anyone talk about it, 2) no one I’ve told in real life seemed impressed, and 3) I think it’s just so clever that I wanted to share.

As a Chinese American, I really enjoyed Lulu Wang’s The Farewell. I’ve seen it three times, and I think I cried each time. I definitely recommend it if you’re an ABC/CBC/BBC/etc. or a learner of Chinese looking for a less intimidating Chinese-language film (since it is both in Chinese and English).

The Chinese title is 别告诉她, which means “don’t tell her.” The vibe is very different, so I was a bit curious. Well, 告别 means “to bid farewell.” So the English title is hidden within the Chinese title! I just thought this was so clever. I don’t know for sure that this was the thought process behind the title, but it can’t be a coincidence.

What’s the story behind these two titles? I will explain below. I don’t think this is a spoiler because you find out all this info very early on in the film, and the first paragraph of Wikipedia and non-spoiler reviews reveal all of this info too. But if you want to watch the movie 100% blind, umm avert your eyes.

Basically, Billi (the main charater) and her family have gone to China for her cousin’s wedding. But actually, the wedding has been planned last-minute as an excuse for the extended family to gather because Nainai (Billi’s grandmother) is sick and not expected to have much time left. However, the family hasn’t told Nainai, which is why they had to orchestrate the wedding to come see her. So they can’t tell Nainai the truth (别告诉她) that they are really in China to see her potentially for the last time (The Farewell).

Disclaimer: I know Awkafina is considered somewhat controversial, and I have noticed a lot of negative posts about her recently. I personally think this film is important for Chinese Americans, so I am willing to overlook Awkafina’s flaws to watch it. The movie is so much more than her. If you disagree, that’s fine, but please just be respectful towards those of us who enjoy the film. Liking the film does not equate to taking a stance on her actions and behavior.
