also moralising about what you perceive as "excessive social media use" or "social media addiction" doesn't even help. like I know that I haven't always had the healthiest relationship to, say, tumblr. but the worst of that has been in periods of my life when I was absurdly stressed (living through abuse, going through an awful break-up, being housebound from chronic illness etc etc.) and getting way too involved in the online world was my only relief from all of that. hearing people tell me that my online use was "unhealthy" didn't help. hearing people shame me for being online too much certainly didn't help. what helped was being exposed to people in my offline life who helped me to create a more diverse life for myself. shame is not a good motivator and it never has been. if you are constantly shaming people in your life, it will only drive them to isolate themselves further. de-moralising your approach + offering actual support/other options will do far more good than shame ever will
